This pops up in my recommended... I think.... Tiffany is telling me to post a video... 😂😂 Thank you for your well balanced analysis of the reasons behind people may stop/slow down on uploading! I think people forget that many who 'became a big UA-camr' did not necessarily set out for it to become their lifetime 40+ year career like in the traditional job sphere. E.g. once a young worker gets settled in the average corporate job, they start planning their career trajectory in that industry, looking into group insurance/pension offered by their employer etc, because they expect to work there or in that industry until they retire when they're a senior. The lifespan of a UA-camr is much shorter for so many reasons but I think one of them is that few UA-camrs really sought out on this path thinking they would do it forever.
Maybe it’s just me, but when content creators (even ones I’m subscribed to) stop posting I literally forget them and forget how long it’s been. Then when they finally post again I am just happy and pleasantly surprised to see them again. People who put pressure on creators to have a constant output need other hobbies. Jfc.

being a successful small channel is such a weird flex because people applaud you for having quality content cause it's not expected and the community feels like a fun secret club. in the beginning, everyone wants to see you win but once you get huge that's when people start to turn on you or want to "take you down".
This is a great way of putting it. It’s that switch from the universally popular ‘underdog’ story to becoming another form of the ‘status quo’. Maintaining that golden balance found between the two extremes seems like you’re on a set timer, although obviously some creators can speed up the process of ‘selling out’ by dramatically changing their set up, or, if a vlog channel, showcasing a much wealthier lifestyle as a result of their fame. That disconnect, however substantial, is the key to the eventual shift in perception

i definitely think people do place certain expectations on big youtubers to maintain a level of "sameness" over multiple years (an unrealistic standard to apply to anyone) but at the same time, there have been so many trends on youtube (comedy skit channels, curated lifestyle vloggers, "relatable" lifestyle vloggers, now i think commentary channels are the most popular) where people who do the "outdated" kind of content lose favorability with the algorithm. it's a catch-22. but i also totally agree that the "woe is me" youtuber whining is tone deaf, and even those i've watched for a long time who have lost viewerships over the years still get hefty sponsorship deals/outside-of-UA-cam opportunities so it's not too bad for them either.
also i totally agree with everything, but especially the part where you talk about "the underrated to quickly overrated" pipeline. i definitely get meaner comments now than when i started because people think that because i have a bigger platform, i "won't see" the remarks or something and the comment section is viewed as a free for all vs. a place to genuinely discuss (i'm speaking about a minority though!). oh and thanks for the b-roll shoutout tiffany! 🥺

It feels similar to how people adore small/indie bands when they have a small audience but when they get too “mainstream” or gain a larger fanbase they’re considered “sellouts.” Everyone loves the underdog and will say they deserve more success until they get it and then they’re not a fun secret anymore
Ugh yeah this is so annoying. I actually discovered some now "big"/popular UA-camrs when they were just starting out, and it's crazy how the tide suddenly shifts from being very encouraging to thinking they are "overrated". Granted, the people who think they are overrated are probably not the original fans, but it's clear they got popular for a reason.
I see the same phenomenon in the metal community as a metalhead. people love underdog bands and hail them to be the greatest, say that they deserve more success.. then they get that success and old fans bіtсh about this band "selling out". like what _do_ you want, Kyle? it's exactly what had happened with Metallica.
@@larsswig912 Okay but like, i get it. The sheer frustration of someone going "oh you found them through ________" is just so annoying. Like Absofacto being a good example. I loved his shit back in 2013 but i can't listen to it publicly anymore without people mentioning that they heard it on tiktok and things like that. It hurts because when it was you and a few thousand people rather than millions, you felt more connected to the artist and to the people who were in that community. It is irrational, but the best way i can describe the feeling is like an unwanted step parent. The new fans aren't like the ones you are used to, they feel awkward and different and very out of place. It takes time to adjust to it, but eventually both get along.
@@moose6815 oh I get it. but there are niche sub-communities for even Metallica fans that you can find, ones that are actual die hard fans who dig into everything about the band, make analyses about the music and stuff, unlike the casual ones. so that's cool :) if you just stay away from the mainstream section of whatever fandom, I don't think you'd come across the tik tok people
I am still amazed that noone mentioned filthy frank/ joji... the guy invented the harlem shake and completely ditched youtube to become a pretty popular singer. I watched the guy bake a hair cake with idubbz and the australian guy (forgot his name), eat it, vomit on camera (and eat said vomit) and now he makes great musik. Sometimes creators get tired of only showing one part of their creativity or they grow out of it. I think he would have been a good example to be mentioned here, even though his departure from youtube is not very recent.
For bestdressed specifically I feel like her living alone in a pandemic for a long time, having a stalker and then moving again may have had an impact... I hope she's ok, I love her videos.

One thing I'd say is that early UA-camrs actually *didn't* think about careers beyond UA-cam for the most part, because we were just pissing about for fun. So it wasn't that we thought we'd use UA-cam to do something more legit. We had zero plan! Because UA-cam wasn't anything to do with income! Imagine.
Yes absolutely! I remember watching (and making) so many videos filled to the brim with copyrighted music bc why not?? It was a very fun time. Even when the partner program started, I think it was a few years before it became widely available
Considering early UA-cam had no way to make money 100% this is true. I have a friend that did UA-cam News back in the day before being monetized and worked with me at Maker. During our time at Maker he stopped his channel completely and moved onto a career behind the scenes in gaming even after he monetized because he knew it wasn't forever, it wasn't fun anymore, and the mental side of being on all the time is hard. He's 100% happier now, doesn't face criticism, and can enjoy his hobby of hiking. For every UA-camr trying to stay in the public eye is hard to even for traditional celebs the constant barrage of criticism and people being generally creepy can really tear down your mental health so more often than not I found they went their own way for their own mental health and some have gone on to better careers. Though for others they had a harder time transitioning off UA-cam and may still do occasional uploads, though I have no idea where they are now. I think the major lesson I learned from my years working behind the scenes is that if you do make it on UA-cam find a way to diversify your ability to make money and if need be go back to school or find a solid career path that has nothing to do with being on all the time.
I think UA-camrs are WAY harder on themselves than necessary. I'm particularly thinking of Safiya and the schedules that she sets for herself and then beats herself up if she doesn't meet them. As a viewer, I really couldn't care less if a video comes out on a specific day of the week. I honestly don't know the upload schedule of any of my subscriptions; I'm just happy when I look and see a video from them. I think to be a successful UA-camr, you have to be super self-motived and driven and that can create internal pressures that lead to burn-out.
I think part of the issue is that being self-employed (which is what UA-camrs do) requires a lot of self-motivation. So if you fall behind your deadlines you feel like you aren't accomplishing as much as you used to. But I really think that Safiyaa can afford to take breaks. Her content is great. I don't think UA-camrs should burn themselves out
Yeah, the line between healthy drive & motivation and unhealthy pressure is so thin. I remember reading Safiya's blog post and just thinking, "poor girl needs a therapist and a nice long break!". In such a public facing position, when so much of your personality and life is up for judgement, you really need a strong support system to help sort out what is and isn't helpful. It seems a lot of UA-camrs who consistently burn out or have issues putting out work always have some tipping point where they need to come to grips with that sort of thing. Definitely not their fault - 15 years ago this kind of job didn't even exist! We're all figuring out what pressures and pitfalls come with social media fame as it comes, for sure. In Safiya's case I hope she can find a way to move forward constructively
Agreed. The amount of UA-cam content a creator posts is a personal choice based on multiple factors. No one should believe the creators owe them. It is okay to miss them though.
Exactly. Like I follow a lot of people and I have no idea what their schedule is. I am just happy when they upload because it's always a nice surprise. (Like this video haha). I feel like youtubers should work up a pace that works for them. As your followers, we understand. And seek help or rest before burnout. Butnout isn't fun in any job or occupation.

Yes! Besides I follow too many channels to notice when they don't post, most of the time and unfollow people randomly of they don't fit with me and my life now, not because the stopped uploading.
It's always fascinated me how people turn on creators, without being prompted by a scandal or anything. It's almost as if there's a threshold of how many followers you can have before you're overrated. Be successful, but not that successful! Must be so frustrating
I think it's the parasocial relationship. You want your "best friend" to succeed at what they do, but once they do, you feel more like "one with the crowd" as if you've lost that "friendship" because that person is too popular. It's also the "I was here in the early days" mentality, you like having a fave that nobody knows, that's indie, but once they're popular or mainstream they become "basic" and you can't flex your unusual and ✨ different✨ taste in (what the fave does). The thing I could compare it with is gamers gatekeeping gaming because "they were there when it wasn't cool" so people who recently started (especially women) are seen as inferior.
Honestly, the word overrated is so overrated 🙄🙄🙄 people throw that word around like it’s nothing. It seems like every time a person doesn’t like some one or gets tired of them, or thinks they’ve received too much love and attention all of a sudden they’re “overrated”. They judge other people for liking them a lot and don’t stop to think that maybe those other people like them because they have different preferences. Overall, people are obsessed with the “underdog”. The hidden gem that they feel doesn’t receive any attention. But when that underdog makes it to the top people turn against them and say stuff like “you’ve changed. You’re not the same anymore. You’re not relatable.” Well uhhh......DUH. Millions of subscribers, fans, views, and money of course will change someone who never had that before. And even without YT, people “changing” is a natural and completely normal part of life and growing up. I don’t freaking get it.

I miss Ashley's (bestdressed) videos so much. they were like me self-care ritual where I could at least pretend to hang out with the cool "older sister" type girl but then her videos got less and less frequent. I was really disappointed, but then in her most recent video, she talked about *having to move out of her apartment* because she was uncomfortable with a fan stalking her apartment to ask her out. I get it now. posting content to UA-cam isn't worth the stress, mental health, and *SAFTEY* of people I genuinely wish the best for (or anyone for that matter) So, Ashley if you read this, I hope you do whatever you feel is best for you. you're content is wonderful but so are you. YOU ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAN YOUR CONTENT!!!

Very comprehensive summary. I don't do UA-cam full time and yet I can totally see how the pressure (from yourself and others) increases over time - this and the workload are elements that viewers don't always realize/see. And the pace is sprint-like, while it actually should be a marathon.

This video made me feel so CALM because jokes on us: we're all feeling the same things and worrying about the same things and are all on that precarious edge! It's so solidifying to hear these career anxieties said out loud! And then to scroll down and see so many amazing UA-camrs feeling the same way.
I remember having that small youtuber preference. I subbed to Joana Ceddia when she was SUPER small-like 200 subscribers small. Once she became "mainstream" it didn't feel like a cute little exclusive club anymore, and I found myself being less interested in her. I try to call myself out on it because it feels like such a "I'm not like other girls, I like small underground youtubers" thing. However I cannot deny the distance you feel when you start seeing big sub numbers, and I tend correlate that with being overrated, or changed, even when the content is as good and relatable as ever. I really gotta stop bleh
I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with preferring smaller communities, you don't owe any creator your continuous support. You don't need to feel guilty about how you prefer to spend your time online, you can just move on to where you prefer to be, I think the problem is just criticizing creators for being successful, which is absurd because of course they want to be.

Not to be rude, but I’m pretty sure Joana blew up from her first Emma chamberlain video and gained around 50k subscribers within the first month of UA-cam. She was only small for a very very short amount of time and the calibre of her videos didn’t really change all that much until the Brad Mondo phase.
I don't know if it's because I'm a little older (32) and didn't grow up with social media, but when UA-camrs I like stop or infrequently upload I just shrug and say "this might suck a little but they ultimately don't owe me anything". I could never fathom being mad at a UA-camr, who I don't pay a cent to watch, for not uploading. And there a dozens of others frequently uploading I can always watch instead. However, if I pay for someone's Patreon (or... Onlyfans haha) and they don't upload I'm not pleased because I'm directly paying them for content they're not providing. But even in that case I'm still not actively mad. The whole thing kinda reminds me of rock bands back in the day. When they're indie, people love and root for them to get more popular, but when they reach a higher level of fame, people get mad and say they sold out. Kind of a lose-lose.
Yes! As a 31 year old I totally can relate to your description! Plus, I didn't grow up with following UA-cam channels at all. I remember we used it just for listening to music and maybe some super silly videos but that was it. I didn't feel attached to any creators. And now I have fun discovering specific channels but I don't have so many expectations.

I completely agree with this sentiment too except In 19 and basically did grow up with youtube and social media. For me, its really just leaving a youtuber alone (or interacting with their other social medias) until they post again and then I get to watch.

on the patreon note, MAKE ONE! the freedom is incredible. i really enjoy having it as a separate platform for not only the smaller community & connection i have with my viewers, but also because i don't have to be a slave to the algorithm LOL. also for me personally, i have struggled in the past with youtube demonetizing my content due to me talking about anything from bras to BLM sooooo it's really nice to not have to deal with that bs!

Oh hey something I actually have personal experience with (kinda)! I'm a medium sized channel and I stopped posting for months because a) I realized that I didn't enjoy making the kind of videos that made my channel blow up, and b) I don't actually want to do youtube as a full time job so my motivation to do something on here I'm not crazy about is VERY low. I'm in the process of switching up my content right now and it feels great to get back to making stuff that's not a slog to produce
You'll never please someone who's committed to misunderstanding you. General words to live by that can help manage anxiety over expressing our beliefs publicly.

I think that people miss out on your content as they think it’s primarily books, while it’s actually learning from the first-hand experiences and lives of kids/folks with unique perspectives (often highlighting life with a particular condition etc.) I think many people who enjoy Anthony Padilla’s more recent style of interview content would really enjoy the conversations you have as well.
My heart breaks with the Ashley thing, she literally had to move out of her apartment because of a stalker, and she basically announced that in her apartment tour-
I feel like SO many youtubers are always like, "Sorry about the lighting, it just rained and this is what I'm working with," or "Sorry my self-tanner looks weird on my hands," or "Sorry if you notice this one tiny hair out of place, I can't get it to stay down," stuff like that. It's constant, so many disclaimers and breaks in videos to explain every single tiny thing, especially as of late. I totally get where you're coming from with anticipating criticism - I almost feel like it's a catch 22 though because so many UA-camrs call it out before anyone in the comments does and that almost draws more attention to it. I am not a UA-camr so this is just an observation as a viewer. This video does a great job at explaining why things like that seem to happen!
I notice this too. Tiffany even did it herself at the beginning of this video, mentioning her bleached hair and needing to get a haircut! (Which was unnecessary, her hair looks great!)
I think this is also what made earlier YT more enjoyable. So much of YT is more about production quality/over production rather than content and far too much of everyone doing the same thing. Not much unique content these days.
When she was talking about second channels, all I could think was "This is where I like to get a little bit crazier, a little bit goofier, and drink La Croix."
something really interesting that i was expecting you to bring up is a large majority of the creators you mentioned (especially in the beginning) are women. we’ve seen time and time again that women are more critically viewed on the internet - even (and especially) by other women. bestdressed and i are the same age and i’ve always loved her videos, and i miss her a lot, but her comments sections can be difficult to read - and i’m not even her. that absolutely has to take a toll (like saf mentioned) and makes other smaller, more positive platforms look much more enticing.
I 100% think this is what was/is driving Ashley from YT, I wasn't super early with her content but her comment section is pretty rough anymore with her videos. it makes me sad that she felt she could be so open about her mental health issues and people are still so harsh.
tbh this even applies to youtubers who are part of a minority or marginalized group: youtubers who are from the lgbt+ community or are people of color. theyre more prone to criticism or are usually regarded in such a high standard-if they underperform or make a mistake theyre suddenly a 'flop'.
I totally agree! I was an early subscriber and watching how the comment section changed overtime from supportive and delighted (her early videos have very refreshing social commentary that was pretty novel at that point) to overcritical and nitpicky was pretty heartbreaking because it changed the way she could express herself and obviously affected her confidence. I think also when people started to make ‘bestdressed problematic’ videos, this probably ate at her self esteem in a way that most people will never know about. I think it’s so sad that her fan base was obviously a huge part of the reason she left :(
Great point. People are so harsh on Ashley and I don’t know why. Nothing she does will please them. Even if she goes out of her way to acknowledge privilege and not step on anyone’s toes when she talks about her personal experiences, people seem set on taking everything she says in the worst way possible. I hope she’s doing well.
A point that I'm surprised you didn't touch on in relation to UA-camrs such as Best Dressed is the Real Life consequences of becoming "famous", especially for women. At the end of one of her most recent videos (still several months ago), Ashley shared that she was moving out of her apartment that she'd only been in a few months because she'd had a literal stalker turn up outside her apartment more than once and felt unsafe there. BIG YIKES and I can understand how that experience would make her want to take a step back from the internet
I only realised recently that this is why (even as a medium-sized creator, if that) I like Patreon so much. Particularly when I’m between videos, I don’t necessarily want to tell EVERYONE what I’m working on, but I also feel weird if NO ONE knows what I’m up to as I have no idea whether it’s interesting or not. I love sharing updates on Patreon as it’s a nice middle ground between sharing EVERYTHING with EVERYONE all the time and feeling like I’ve completely gone off the radar for a month.

one of the paradoxes of doing youtube FT is that it's NOT a 40-hour, 9-5 job yet thanks to ~capitalismo~ so many youtubers are still throttling to work as much as possible! IMO success as a self-employed content creator would look like LESS labor than my corporate job not more. tbh it's admirable that kelly stamps says she works 15 hours a week and is able to support herself and still grow her channel

I think a good example of this is what happened to Ryan Higa he was a huge UA-camr and still has a large following but he talked about how he went through a crisis which really shifted the content and he hasn’t posted on his main channel in a long time

I have been on here 14 years. Golly it is difficult to keep it going unless our life changes too. The lack of career progression, engagement, marriage, new home content or pregnancy, in addition to my appearance changing due to illness... killed my following. The pressure to showcase life in an order to continue to grow... is overwhelming. If you dont adapt or cater, you die or slow and disappear. I've basically died out, but keep going for myself. The abuse, harassment and the stalking too its toll too. I had enough years ago and its had lasting impacts on everything in my life. The internet loved it when my Grandad was dying with cancer.... you're so right. having a small, tight knit community is so nice because you are able to read and reply to every comment, you can even recognize almost everyone that comments on your videos and support you, and you mostly get no negative (hateful, not talking about constructive criticism) responses. it's like you form your own little family. at the same time, you definitely want to blow up and have your channel and content be seen by millions, but with that comes sooo much negativity that can be harmful to your mental health. it's a weird internal struggle but i can definitely understand why a lot of big channel disappear. i can imagine the pressure they must feel to know so many people are watching and therefore criticizing... it must be overwhelming :/

Yeah, I love internet analysis, it was the reason I subscribed. BUT, I also enjoy the reality show videos and the nuuly reviews so much. Even when the videos are more relaxed than others, I'm here because I like to see Tiffany's take on things (also because I love clothes and her style)
I can't speak for everyone personally but I agree with Nailogicals comment in a sense where most of us didn't expect this to be their career as they started and SO so SO many of my youtuber friends have also started at a very young age, in highschool (me included). Doing this full time doesn't give you much breathing room in terms of figuring out what you want your actual career to look like and it causes a lot of burnout and hesitance 5-10 years down the line, since you become way too hyper focused on content creation to think of other, more secure avenues.
I think it'll be interesting to see how things change in the future, with young people now considering "content creator" as a long-term career and planning for it. As a lot of people have mentioned, I think most of the original creators weren't planning on being UA-camrs forever.

Ashley from best dressed gets hounded on so much for her humour too... as if there aren’t male youtubers who have the same type of humour. Honestly, it feels like creators often can’t win, especially female youtubers. It just hurts to see the baseless remarks made against them instead of what could be valid criticism. They’re human too.
I love ashelys humor so much I really don’t get why people were so mad about it. Everyone does sexual and self deprecating humor but ppl were making her out to be a bad person for it??? Like those are well established forms of comedy inside AND outside of the UA-cam bubble!
@@fa1ruz there was like a wave of cancel videos about her during quarantine (spring 2020) about like her humor, her parents being well off, and her Amazon partnership and then there was a second wave in the fall after she did the video about HER personal covid experience. Ever since she moved from LA a considerable amount of her fan base turned on her for no reason.
@@SuperLegoman345 fr I literally saw this girl comment like a whole ass paper trying to convince people Ashley was this racist hypocrite just because she didn't credit a street artist on one of her videos since she showed a 3 second clip of their artwork that was on sidewalk. (she even later credited them) People just need to get a grip and stop borderline obsessing over someone they literally do not know. I'd understand if she was out partying everyday and literally risking peoples lives like other influencers but she's not.
Tom Scott now takes a break every January, and has guest videos instead. A way for him to have time off and to boost some smaller channels. I've discovered some great people because they've had guest spots on Tom's channel.
Not sure if it’s just me, but if my favourite creator stops posting, I won’t necessarily think they’re lazy or ungrateful. I’ll think “Oh I wonder if there’s something wrong” or “Oh I miss their content but I’m excited for them to return”. As a viewer, to all the creators who may be struggling with this, know that so many of your viewers eagerly await new content and won’t judge you at all! Edit: super interesting video!! So well done
Micarah Tewers is one who def does quality over quantity. Her personality actually reminds me a lot of you despite the fact that her content is not at all like yours. She doesn’t post often but I found her VERY early and watched her channel explode!
I’m honestly forgetting that the UA-cam audiences are really young because older ones should know and understand that these people have lives and do not exist to constantly entertain us, what’s even more messed up is that provide us content for FREE where did this entitlement for free entertainment come from?!
She was popular immediately on her literal first video, when I saw the hype it was getting, I was so amazed! I don't see her pop up on my homepage as often or check in as frequently now :( Her videos were so good and she deserves more love nowadays :(
wow yes, that was quite the blow-up. Did you see her interview with Philip DeFranco? I don't think Janelle couldn't cope with it. It just came as a surprise to her. Don't forget that it was never her intention to become a full-time UA-camr or anything like that.

They think uploading a 15 minute video must equate to 15 minutes of work, in reality there’s soooooo much work behind the scenes. It becomes so hard to balance especially if you’ve got other jobs.
This was wonderful. I’ve been feeling this a lot lately. Especially when you are creating art stuff it can be so draining to make videos because your artworks already take so long to make and then you still need to edit the video and make everything look perfect. This was in my recommendations and I feel UA-cam is trying to tell me to get back to uploading lol. I feel slightly attacked 😂. I definitely can relate to all of the reasons some creators slow down or stop uploading. For me I realized having a work life balance is so important. Many don't understand the hours of work that goes into every upload (for me at least) from filming to editing. The work hours can get out of hand if you let it. Year after year of it on top of other pressures that come with being a "Big UA-camr" can be taxing on the mental health. I am super grateful that I am able to take a step back without the pressure of worrying about finances. That's a luxury I couldn't afford in my previous job. As with anything in life balance is key. On another note, great content. I'm about to binge some more 😉.
i think the dynamic of para social relationships is so interesting. the viewer feels like it’s a one on one friendship but the creator sees the subscribers as a group, almost like a mob of expectations. i think that’s why people can take it personally when a creator stops uploading, because to them it’s like losing a friend
I find that dynamic very interesting, as well. It's very one-way. The viewer might feel like a friend checking in, and use over-friendly or overly-casual language because you hear about the creator's life and know things about them, when really, you're a stranger watching them in the internet. It's sometimes tough to understand that boundary.
I never get mad when you-tubers don’t upload but it does make me sad because I’m so invested in these human beings that have no real connection to me so when they stop uploading I can’t text them and ask if they’re ok. I always understand that being a person online can’t always be easy and I as a stranger have an not entitled to have any answers from them but it does almost feel like when your table partner in a class that you get along with but aren’t exactly friends with and don’t have each others numbers and disappears for half a semester or drop out without telling you.
it almost seems like there should be therapists who specialize in the needs of youtubers ?? i'm sure it's been a thing for entertainers before... but my therapist is a 60 year old lady and it would take a lot of explaining the context to begin with

There is a therapist on UA-cam called The Healthy Gamer, obviously he specializes in treating gamers, but he just released a video with Jacksepticeye. I wonder if he’ll branch out to work more with other UA-camrs.
Something which high subscriber count UA-camrs have to remember and acknowledge is that you are essentially a one man show. YOU are the script writer, the director, the actor (the talent), the tech support, the editor, and the post production team. When you’re feeling the burnout and the self doubt from not keeping up on top of schedule, you have to remember that the weekly TV shows have multiple people behind the scenes making sure it gets out there on time. You think the TV show hosts come up with the weekly content? They have a team dedicated just for brainstorming ideas and organizing the content. You are already doing a lot even if you only upload once a month. Give yourself credit for that.

I've seen several people who started UA-cam as teenagers, enjoyed success for a while, and then just wanted to do something else. And I think that's pretty normal. Unless you're very lucky, it's pretty common to get tired of any one job after you've been doing it for several years.

Yeah, people criticize her for literally everything that she does. In the last video she posted though she mentioned that she has a stalker, and I've seen a lot of people saying that she stopped posting because she had to move and she doesn't want them to figure out her location again.
In my weird fairy-tale optimistic mind, I'm just hopeful she's living her best life, throwing all her time and attention to decorating her new apartment, making new friends and enjoying her new relationship. That girl moved to New York RIGHT as we went into lockdown, I felt so bad that she couldnt get out and meet new people. I'm really hopeful that whenever she does upload again, the stalker issue will have calmed down and she will have lots of positive updates for us. But again thats just me being optimistic
The way people go after Ashley for the smallest things is disgusting and frankly misogynistic. She’s criticised for her self-deprecating racey sense of humour while men can get away with pedo jokes, and they act as if her upbeat personality is inherently problematic. She even got cancelled for having “rich” parents. I’m not even joking. She was said to be problematic for not randomly bringing up that she’s from upper middle class on her fashion channel when she was already independent from her parents and maybe want some privacy for them. The people who go after her are young women as well such is said. It’s literally schoolyard bullying behaviour disguised as “valid criticism” when they just her personality annoying or unlikable. But instead of just not watching her they decide to bully her relentlessly
I think the criticism continued because she has not addressed the original criticism, which was on her kind of tone deaf portrayal of covid and quarantine. Then the whole sustainability versus Amazon thing...I’m not saying that was right or wrong, she can do whatever she wants - but I don’t think her, or Haley Pham for example, will come back into favor with their former fans unless they at least address and/or apologize for some of their missteps.
@@WeiYinChan this is not to rag on ashley - the hate she got for her rich parents mostly came from all the times she portrayed herself as this lower/middle income kid who was struggling like the "rest of us." if she had been upfront about her privileged background, she might have gotten much less flack for that.
I think it’s easy to forget that the majority of channels are run by just...one person. They’re not this big movie scale production team, its just a regular person doing something that matters to them and hoping it matters to someone else out there. People have grown to expect the production value of Game of Thrones from one dude just chillin at home but also don’t want the creator to feel too ‘inaccessible’. It’s like no matter what a creator does they always lose to someone’s expectations.
Even as a small UA-camr, I struggle with perfectionism. I want my content to be as good as possible, but I don’t have the skill set to get it to that level. I don’t want to “blow up” until I feel like I have the skills to meet the level expected, like you talked about. As much as I want to spend days on a video, I’m in school right now and honestly don’t have the time.
It seems like creators might project their own expectations for themselves on their audience. I am just genuinely happy whenever I see a new video. No judgement, no expectations to be blown away. If I subscribed, I like listening to you, and that's pretty much it.
As a casual, regular viewer, I would much rather my favorite creators take care of themselves first before worrying about posting videos that they at least can live with and stand by its quality rather than constantly churning out videos of diminishing quality for the sake of the algorithm while their mental health spirals out of control.
you know it’s pretty interesting because i feel this way right now and my channel isn’t blowing up rapidly like kelly stamps but i reviewed sia’s movie and its currently at 35k views in less than a month when usually my most viewed videos get at max 3k views, within this time i got monetized and it’s honestly so stressful because i want to keep on making videos so my channel is successful but my imposter syndrome is just out of control i get so scared of people hating my content and my ideas not being interesting enough either way once again you made another amazing video ❤️

I also think there’s a type of goal based issue with UA-cam. When it comes to best dressed, I remember when she got 1 million subscribers, which is a huge achievement, and she felt kind of disappointed bc she didn’t feel the way she wanted to. It’s like you’re hustling and you’re going and you get what you’ve been striving for and it doesn’t feel as good as you had hoped. Then I think you feel disheartened.

I'm a small UA-camr with almost 25k subs, but I just turned off my UA-cam Studio notifications a few weeks ago. I love engaging with my subs, but comments get weird and sometimes don't even offer constructive criticism, just rudeness. Or stupidity. I had somebody comment they turned off my video and would never watch me again because they couldn't stand my "vocal fry." 🤦🏾♀️ Another commentor said it looked like I had gained 70 lbs. I *love* being a creator, but definitely see how *loads* of therapy is necessary to maintain and build on this platform, because the anxiety from all the random people around the world - who are judging you - is REAL. Sometimes I just really miss the 90's. lol Great video! Love how you broke this down, and I hope therapy goes well for you. 💛

You sign up for the job, not the harassment and rude comments someone throws at you. Then once they gain fame they start to get lazier and weaker mentally. Once their content starts to dwindle instead of improving, they take a break to “clear off their mind”. Well as a youtuber you have the duty to provide entertainment for your viewers and receive money in return. On a regular job you can’t just tell your boss, “sorry I’m not going to show up today because I don’t feel like it”. They need to be responsible and make their videos out of passion and not just for the money.

Not a UA-camr but an author and all of the above. I relate so heavily. The healthiest thing after 4 or 5 years was stop trying to please and stop trying to keep it a career. I stopped caring about disappointing people, stopped making content to make money, and months later, I was flourishing mentally and found new inspiration.
Tiffany, I related to so much of what you shared here. Even I have content I only share on Patreon... my personal vlogs. It feels so homey and welcoming to share the things closest to my heart with that smaller community
This "tight knit community" for small channels is something I hear creators talking about A LOT. But the reality is, while I've had some nice short conversations in the youtube comment section - it doesn't feel like a community as a viewer. I don't remember anyone's profile pics or usernames, I'm just there to comment on a video I liked. It's not so much a community as it is a fan club. Am I an asshole for this lukewarm take?
No. I absolutely agree. The only “community” I feel like actually exists (and often can be found in weird places outside of UA-cam too) is the Vlogbrothers Nerdfighter community. That hits in a way that feels it matches the word.
I am a very forgetful person and if a fav doesn’t upload for a while I’m not gonna get mad or anything. Literally all that happens is I’ll see their new video in my subscriptions list thing and be like “oh yeah they exist!!! That’s dope!!! Imma watch the new video now” I feel like it’s easy as an influencer who’s job and income is directly dependent on their fans to fall into the “what if they forget me” mindset. It’s crucial to remind yourself that even if they do “forget” you they can quickly be reminded of you and start actively supporting you again as soon as you post a new video. It’s a very unstable relationship that can act as a really good or bad thing, it’s just easier to focus on the bad possibilities than on the good ones.
This! I'm now subscribed to soooo many good channels that even if I really like someone's content, I never actually ran out of interesting things to watch, so I tend to forget about a specific creator's schedule until they upload again.
I'm a graphic design student in college about to graduate. In high school I just tried my best and I received a couple of scholarships and awards for my work and I was grateful. When I got into college I had this constant nagging about keeping up the positive momentum, applying to scholarships and awards, try your hardest even if you have to sacrifice your mental health etc. I wound up having to take a gap semester because of this. It completely drained my confidence and I had to re-find my artistic style as a junior in college (and then covid hit ugh). I think sometimes we forget that we received admiration, recognition, positive reactions, whatever you want to call it just by being genuine and allowing everything we do to come from a place of honesty. People will sometimes like what you do not because you tried hard, but because its a reflection of you. Not sure if that makes sense.
It also seems like the fundamental dynamic of all these platforms is "selling" yourself - your humor, your style, your approach to editing... If you're an actor in a TV show or Netflix movie, a lot of other artists participate in creating that content. Most UA-camrs are making money from the way they're presenting their personalities and perspectives, so any negative feedback feels and maybe is deeply personal. Seems like so much pressure! I could never do it, and I have a lot of empathy for creators, especially younger folks who may not have much other professional experience or strong support networks, who get overwhelmed when they blow up quickly and are suddenly subject to such intense scrutiny.

This pops up in my recommended... I think.... Tiffany is telling me to post a video... 😂😂 Thank you for your well balanced analysis of the reasons behind people may stop/slow down on uploading! I think people forget that many who 'became a big UA-camr' did not necessarily set out for it to become their lifetime 40+ year career like in the traditional job sphere. E.g. once a young worker gets settled in the average corporate job, they start planning their career trajectory in that industry, looking into group insurance/pension offered by their employer etc, because they expect to work there or in that industry until they retire when they're a senior. The lifespan of a UA-camr is much shorter for so many reasons but I think one of them is that few UA-camrs really sought out on this path thinking they would do it forever.

being a successful small channel is such a weird flex because people applaud you for having quality content cause it's not expected and the community feels like a fun secret club. in the beginning, everyone wants to see you win but once you get huge that's when people start to turn on you or want to "take you down".

This is a great way of putting it. It’s that switch from the universally popular ‘underdog’ story to becoming another form of the ‘status quo’. Maintaining that golden balance found between the two extremes seems like you’re on a set timer, although obviously some creators can speed up the process of ‘selling out’ by dramatically changing their set up, or, if a vlog channel, showcasing a much wealthier lifestyle as a result of their fame. That disconnect, however substantial, is the key to the eventual shift in perception

i definitely think people do place certain expectations on big youtubers to maintain a level of "sameness" over multiple years (an unrealistic standard to apply to anyone) but at the same time, there have been so many trends on youtube (comedy skit channels, curated lifestyle vloggers, "relatable" lifestyle vloggers, now i think commentary channels are the most popular) where people who do the "outdated" kind of content lose favorability with the algorithm. it's a catch-22. but i also totally agree that the "woe is me" youtuber whining is tone deaf, and even those i've watched for a long time who have lost viewerships over the years still get hefty sponsorship deals/outside-of-UA-cam opportunities so it's not too bad for them either.
also i totally agree with everything, but especially the part where you talk about "the underrated to quickly overrated" pipeline. i definitely get meaner comments now than when i started because people think that because i have a bigger platform, i "won't see" the remarks or something and the comment section is viewed as a free for all vs. a place to genuinely discuss (i'm speaking about a minority though!). oh and thanks for the b-roll shoutout tiffany! 🥺

It feels similar to how people adore small/indie bands when they have a small audience but when they get too “mainstream” or gain a larger fanbase they’re considered “sellouts.” Everyone loves the underdog and will say they deserve more success until they get it and then they’re not a fun secret anymore

I actually discovered some now "big"/popular UA-camrs when they were just starting out, and it's crazy how the tide suddenly shifts from being very encouraging to thinking they are "overrated". Granted, the people who think they are overrated are probably not the original fans, but it's clear they got popular for a reason.
I see the same phenomenon in the metal community as a metalhead. people love underdog bands and hail them to be the greatest, say that they deserve more success.. then they get that success and old fans bіtсh about this band "selling out". like what _do_ you want, Kyle?

I loved his shit back in 2013 but i can't listen to it publicly anymore without people mentioning that they heard it on tiktok and things like that.
It hurts because when it was you and a few thousand people rather than millions, you felt more connected to the artist and to the people who were in that community. It is irrational, but the best way i can describe the feeling is like an unwanted step parent. The new fans aren't like the ones you are used to, they feel awkward and different and very out of place. It takes time to adjust to it, but eventually both get along.
@@moose6815 oh I get it. but there are niche sub-communities for even Metallica fans that you can find, ones that are actual die hard fans who dig into everything about the band, make analyses about the music and stuff, unlike the casual ones. so that's cool :)

I am still amazed that noone mentioned filthy frank/ joji... the guy invented the harlem shake and completely ditched youtube to become a pretty popular singer. I watched the guy bake a hair cake with idubbz and the australian guy (forgot his name), eat it, vomit on camera (and eat said vomit) and now he makes great musik. Sometimes creators get tired of only showing one part of their creativity or they grow out of it. I think he would have been a good example to be mentioned here, even though his departure from youtube is not very recent.
For bestdressed specifically I feel like her living alone in a pandemic for a long time, having a stalker and then moving again may have had an impact... I hope she's ok, I love her videos.

One thing I'd say is that early UA-camrs actually *didn't* think about careers beyond UA-cam for the most part, because we were just pissing about for fun. So it wasn't that we thought we'd use UA-cam to do something more legit. We had zero plan! Because UA-cam wasn't anything to do with income! Imagine.
Yes absolutely! I remember watching (and making) so many videos filled to the brim with copyrighted music bc why not?? It was a very fun time. Even when the partner program started, I think it was a few years before it became widely available
Considering early UA-cam had no way to make money 100% this is true. I have a friend that did UA-cam News back in the day before being monetized and worked with me at Maker. During our time at Maker he stopped his channel completely and moved onto a career behind the scenes in gaming even after he monetized because he knew it wasn't forever, it wasn't fun anymore, and the mental side of being on all the time is hard. He's 100% happier now, doesn't face criticism, and can enjoy his hobby of hiking. For every UA-camr trying to stay in the public eye is hard to even for traditional celebs the constant barrage of criticism and people being generally creepy can really tear down your mental health so more often than not I found they went their own way for their own mental health and some have gone on to better careers. Though for others they had a harder time transitioning off UA-cam and may still do occasional uploads, though I have no idea where they are now. I think the major lesson I learned from my years working behind the scenes is that if you do make it on UA-cam find a way to diversify your ability to make money and if need be go back to school or find a solid career path that has nothing to do with being on all the time.

I think UA-camrs are WAY harder on themselves than necessary. I'm particularly thinking of Safiya and the schedules that she sets for herself and then beats herself up if she doesn't meet them. As a viewer, I really couldn't care less if a video comes out on a specific day of the week. I honestly don't know the upload schedule of any of my subscriptions; I'm just happy when I look and see a video from them. I think to be a successful UA-camr, you have to be super self-motived and driven and that can create internal pressures that lead to burn-out.
The only ones I know are the ones that upload on the same day as me because I watch them after I upload as a treat 😂
I think part of the issue is that being self-employed (which is what UA-camrs do) requires a lot of self-motivation. So if you fall behind your deadlines you feel like you aren't accomplishing as much as you used to. But I really think that Safiyaa can afford to take breaks. Her content is great. I don't think UA-camrs should burn themselves out
Yeah, the line between healthy drive & motivation and unhealthy pressure is so thin. I remember reading Safiya's blog post and just thinking, "poor girl needs a therapist and a nice long break!". In such a public facing position, when so much of your personality and life is up for judgement, you really need a strong support system to help sort out what is and isn't helpful. It seems a lot of UA-camrs who consistently burn out or have issues putting out work always have some tipping point where they need to come to grips with that sort of thing. Definitely not their fault - 15 years ago this kind of job didn't even exist! We're all figuring out what pressures and pitfalls come with social media fame as it comes, for sure. In Safiya's case I hope she can find a way to move forward constructively
Agreed. The amount of UA-cam content a creator posts is a personal choice based on multiple factors. No one should believe the creators owe them. It is okay to miss them though.
Exactly. Like I follow a lot of people and I have no idea what their schedule is. I am just happy when they upload because it's always a nice surprise. (Like this video haha). I feel like youtubers should work up a pace that works for them. As your followers, we understand. And seek help or rest before burnout. Butnout isn't fun in any job or occupation.

It's always fascinated me how people turn on creators, without being prompted by a scandal or anything. It's almost as if there's a threshold of how many followers you can have before you're overrated. Be successful, but not that successful! Must be so frustrating
I think it's the parasocial relationship. You want your "best friend" to succeed at what they do, but once they do, you feel more like "one with the crowd" as if you've lost that "friendship" because that person is too popular. It's also the "I was here in the early days" mentality, you like having a fave that nobody knows, that's indie, but once they're popular or mainstream they become "basic" and you can't flex your unusual and ✨ different✨ taste in (what the fave does). The thing I could compare it with is gamers gatekeeping gaming because "they were there when it wasn't cool" so people who recently started (especially women) are seen as inferior.

Honestly, the word overrated is so overrated 🙄🙄🙄 people throw that word around like it’s nothing. It seems like every time a person doesn’t like some one or gets tired of them, or thinks they’ve received too much love and attention all of a sudden they’re “overrated”. They judge other people for liking them a lot and don’t stop to think that maybe those other people like them because they have different preferences. Overall, people are obsessed with the “underdog”. The hidden gem that they feel doesn’t receive any attention. But when that underdog makes it to the top people turn against them and say stuff like “you’ve changed. You’re not the same anymore. You’re not relatable.” Well uhhh......DUH. Millions of subscribers, fans, views, and money of course will change someone who never had that before. And even without YT, people “changing” is a natural and completely normal part of life and growing up. I don’t freaking get it.

I miss Ashley's (bestdressed) videos so much. they were like me self-care ritual where I could at least pretend to hang out with the cool "older sister" type girl but then her videos got less and less frequent. I was really disappointed, but then in her most recent video, she talked about *having to move out of her apartment* because she was uncomfortable with a fan stalking her apartment to ask her out. I get it now. posting content to UA-cam isn't worth the stress, mental health, and *SAFTEY* of people I genuinely wish the best for (or anyone for that matter)

I remember having that small youtuber preference. I subbed to Joana Ceddia when she was SUPER small-like 200 subscribers small. Once she became "mainstream" it didn't feel like a cute little exclusive club anymore, and I found myself being less interested in her. I try to call myself out on it because it feels like such a "I'm not like other girls, I like small underground youtubers" thing. However I cannot deny the distance you feel when you start seeing big sub numbers, and I tend correlate that with being overrated, or changed, even when the content is as good and relatable as ever. I really gotta stop bleh
I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with preferring smaller communities, you don't owe any creator your continuous support. You don't need to feel guilty about how you prefer to spend your time online, you can just move on to where you prefer to be, I think the problem is just criticizing creators for being successful, which is absurd because of course they want to be.

Not to be rude, but I’m pretty sure Joana blew up from her first Emma chamberlain video and gained around 50k subscribers within the first month of UA-cam. She was only small for a very very short amount of time and the calibre of her videos didn’t really change all that much until the Brad Mondo phase.

I don't know if it's because I'm a little older (32) and didn't grow up with social media, but when UA-camrs I like stop or infrequently upload I just shrug and say "this might suck a little but they ultimately don't owe me anything". I could never fathom being mad at a UA-camr, who I don't pay a cent to watch, for not uploading. And there a dozens of others frequently uploading I can always watch instead. However, if I pay for someone's Patreon (or... Onlyfans haha) and they don't upload I'm not pleased because I'm directly paying them for content they're not providing. But even in that case I'm still not actively mad.
The whole thing kinda reminds me of rock bands back in the day. When they're indie, people love and root for them to get more popular, but when they reach a higher level of fame, people get mad and say they sold out. Kind of a lose-lose.

(Especially with the end sentiment i hate when people do ads and people call them a “sell out” unless Ofc they have ever claimed to never want to do a sponsorship) I think I don’t 100% fall into this as lol I’m younger (19) but I have various interests and subscribe to different content so I’m definitely like you in the sense that when people start doing slower uploads I can move on, I will say like this video seeing those faces I do feel bad and miss them. (Mostly the ones that you’d watch every video too) I’m not gonna lose sleep over it but I definitely feel nostalgic from time to time. That’s my take lol
I completely agree with this sentiment too except In 19 and basically did grow up with youtube and social media. For me, its really just leaving a youtuber alone (or interacting with their other social medias) until they post again and then I get to watch.

Oh hey something I actually have personal experience with (kinda)! I'm a medium sized channel and I stopped posting for months because a) I realized that I didn't enjoy making the kind of videos that made my channel blow up, and b) I don't actually want to do youtube as a full time job so my motivation to do something on here I'm not crazy about is VERY low. I'm in the process of switching up my content right now and it feels great to get back to making stuff that's not a slog to produce

I think that people miss out on your content as they think it’s primarily books, while it’s actually learning from the first-hand experiences and lives of kids/folks with unique perspectives (often highlighting life with a particular condition etc.) I think many people who enjoy Anthony Padilla’s more recent style of interview content would really enjoy the conversations you have as well.

My heart breaks with the Ashley thing, she literally had to move out of her apartment because of a stalker, and she basically announced that in her apartment tour-
I feel like SO many youtubers are always like, "Sorry about the lighting, it just rained and this is what I'm working with," or "Sorry my self-tanner looks weird on my hands," or "Sorry if you notice this one tiny hair out of place, I can't get it to stay down," stuff like that. It's constant, so many disclaimers and breaks in videos to explain every single tiny thing, especially as of late. I totally get where you're coming from with anticipating criticism - I almost feel like it's a catch 22 though because so many UA-camrs call it out before anyone in the comments does and that almost draws more attention to it.
I am not a UA-camr so this is just an observation as a viewer. This video does a great job at explaining why things like that seem to happen!
I notice this too. Tiffany even did it herself at the beginning of this video, mentioning her bleached hair and needing to get a haircut! (Which was unnecessary, her hair looks great!)

I think this is also what made earlier YT more enjoyable. So much of YT is more about production quality/over production rather than content and far too much of everyone doing the same thing. Not much unique content these days.
My favourite one is 'I look disgusting today' or 'my hair looks disgusting today'.

something really interesting that i was expecting you to bring up is a large majority of the creators you mentioned (especially in the beginning) are women. we’ve seen time and time again that women are more critically viewed on the internet - even (and especially) by other women. bestdressed and i are the same age and i’ve always loved her videos, and i miss her a lot, but her comments sections can be difficult to read - and i’m not even her. that absolutely has to take a toll (like saf mentioned) and makes other smaller, more positive platforms look much more enticing.
I 100% think this is what was/is driving Ashley from YT, I wasn't super early with her content but her comment section is pretty rough anymore with her videos. it makes me sad that she felt she could be so open about her mental health issues and people are still so harsh.
tbh this even applies to youtubers who are part of a minority or marginalized group: youtubers who are from the lgbt+ community or are people of color. theyre more prone to criticism or are usually regarded in such a high standard-if they underperform or make a mistake theyre suddenly a 'flop'.
I totally agree! I was an early subscriber and watching how the comment section changed overtime from supportive and delighted (her early videos have very refreshing social commentary that was pretty novel at that point) to overcritical and nitpicky was pretty heartbreaking because it changed the way she could express herself and obviously affected her confidence. I think also when people started to make ‘bestdressed problematic’ videos, this probably ate at her self esteem in a way that most people will never know about. I think it’s so sad that her fan base was obviously a huge part of the reason she left :(
Great point. People are so harsh on Ashley and I don’t know why. Nothing she does will please them. Even if she goes out of her way to acknowledge privilege and not step on anyone’s toes when she talks about her personal experiences, people seem set on taking everything she says in the worst way possible. I hope she’s doing well.

A point that I'm surprised you didn't touch on in relation to UA-camrs such as Best Dressed is the Real Life consequences of becoming "famous", especially for women. At the end of one of her most recent videos (still several months ago), Ashley shared that she was moving out of her apartment that she'd only been in a few months because she'd had a literal stalker turn up outside her apartment more than once and felt unsafe there. BIG YIKES and I can understand how that experience would make her want to take a step back from the internet
I only realised recently that this is why (even as a medium-sized creator, if that) I like Patreon so much. Particularly when I’m between videos, I don’t necessarily want to tell EVERYONE what I’m working on, but I also feel weird if NO ONE knows what I’m up to as I have no idea whether it’s interesting or not. I love sharing updates on Patreon as it’s a nice middle ground between sharing EVERYTHING with EVERYONE all the time and feeling like I’ve completely gone off the radar for a month.

I think a good example of this is what happened to Ryan Higa he was a huge UA-camr and still has a large following but he talked about how he went through a crisis which really shifted the content and he hasn’t posted on his main channel in a long time

I have been on here 14 years. Golly it is difficult to keep it going unless our life changes too. The lack of career progression, engagement, marriage, new home content or pregnancy, in addition to my appearance changing due to illness... killed my following. The pressure to showcase life in an order to continue to grow... is overwhelming. If you dont adapt or cater, you die or slow and disappear. I've basically died out, but keep going for myself.
The abuse, harassment and the stalking too its toll too. I had enough years ago and its had lasting impacts on everything in my life. The internet loved it when my Grandad was dying with cancer.... I still havent got over that yet. When my Mum was diagnosed last year, people told me they wanted her to die.
The endless abuse changes how we are and feel about our lives, bodies and selves. It's not fun or safe anymore.

you're so right. having a small, tight knit community is so nice because you are able to read and reply to every comment, you can even recognize almost everyone that comments on your videos and support you, and you mostly get no negative (hateful, not talking about constructive criticism) responses. it's like you form your own little family. at the same time, you definitely want to blow up and have your channel and content be seen by millions, but with that comes sooo much negativity that can be harmful to your mental health. it's a weird internal struggle but i can definitely understand why a lot of big channel disappear. i can imagine the pressure they must feel to know so many people are watching and therefore criticizing... it must be overwhelming :/

Yeah, I love internet analysis, it was the reason I subscribed. BUT, I also enjoy the reality show videos and the nuuly reviews so much.
Even when the videos are more relaxed than others, I'm here because I like to see Tiffany's take on things (also because I love clothes and her style)
I can't speak for everyone personally but I agree with Nailogicals comment in a sense where most of us didn't expect this to be their career as they started and SO so SO many of my youtuber friends have also started at a very young age, in highschool (me included). Doing this full time doesn't give you much breathing room in terms of figuring out what you want your actual career to look like and it causes a lot of burnout and hesitance 5-10 years down the line, since you become way too hyper focused on content creation to think of other, more secure avenues.
I think it'll be interesting to see how things change in the future, with young people now considering "content creator" as a long-term career and planning for it. As a lot of people have mentioned, I think most of the original creators weren't planning on being UA-camrs forever.

Honestly, it feels like creators often can’t win, especially female youtubers. It just hurts to see the baseless remarks made against them instead of what could be valid criticism. They’re human too.

Tom Scott now takes a break every January, and has guest videos instead. A way for him to have time off and to boost some smaller channels. I've discovered some great people because they've had guest spots on Tom's channel.

Not sure if it’s just me, but if my favourite creator stops posting, I won’t necessarily think they’re lazy or ungrateful. I’ll think “Oh I wonder if there’s something wrong” or “Oh I miss their content but I’m excited for them to return”. As a viewer, to all the creators who may be struggling with this, know that so many of your viewers eagerly await new content and won’t judge you at all!

Especially when you are creating art stuff it can be so draining to make videos because your artworks already take so long to make and then you still need to edit the video and make everything look perfect. This was in my recommendations and I feel UA-cam is trying to tell me to get back to uploading lol. I feel slightly attacked 😂. I definitely can relate to all of the reasons some creators slow down or stop uploading. For me I realized having a work life balance is so important. Many don't understand the hours of work that goes into every upload (for me at least) from filming to editing. The work hours can get out of hand if you let it. Year after year of it on top of other pressures that come with being a "Big UA-camr" can be taxing on the mental health. I am super grateful that I am able to take a step back without the pressure of worrying about finances. That's a luxury I couldn't afford in my previous job. As with anything in life balance is key.
On another note, great content. I'm about to binge some more 😉.
i think the dynamic of para social relationships is so interesting. the viewer feels like it’s a one on one friendship but the creator sees the subscribers as a group, almost like a mob of expectations. i think that’s why people can take it personally when a creator stops uploading, because to them it’s like losing a friend
I find that dynamic very interesting, as well. It's very one-way. The viewer might feel like a friend checking in, and use over-friendly or overly-casual language because you hear about the creator's life and know things about them, when really, you're a stranger watching them in the internet. It's sometimes tough to understand that boundary.
I never get mad when you-tubers don’t upload but it does make me sad because I’m so invested in these human beings that have no real connection to me so when they stop uploading I can’t text them and ask if they’re ok. I always understand that being a person online can’t always be easy and I as a stranger have an not entitled to have any answers from them but it does almost feel like when your table partner in a class that you get along with but aren’t exactly friends with and don’t have each others numbers and disappears for half a semester or drop out without telling you.

Something which high subscriber count UA-camrs have to remember and acknowledge is that you are essentially a one man show. YOU are the script writer, the director, the actor (the talent), the tech support, the editor, and the post production team. When you’re feeling the burnout and the self doubt from not keeping up on top of schedule, you have to remember that the weekly TV shows have multiple people behind the scenes making sure it gets out there on time. You think the TV show hosts come up with the weekly content? They have a team dedicated just for brainstorming ideas and organizing the content.
You are already doing a lot even if you only upload once a month. Give yourself credit for that.

I've seen several people who started UA-cam as teenagers, enjoyed success for a while, and then just wanted to do something else. And I think that's pretty normal. Unless you're very lucky, it's pretty common to get tired of any one job after you've been doing it for several years.

Yeah, people criticize her for literally everything that she does. In the last video she posted though she mentioned that she has a stalker, and I've seen a lot of people saying that she stopped posting because she had to move and she doesn't want them to figure out her location again.
In my weird fairy-tale optimistic mind, I'm just hopeful she's living her best life, throwing all her time and attention to decorating her new apartment, making new friends and enjoying her new relationship. That girl moved to New York RIGHT as we went into lockdown, I felt so bad that she couldnt get out and meet new people. I'm really hopeful that whenever she does upload again, the stalker issue will have calmed down and she will have lots of positive updates for us. But again thats just me being optimistic
The way people go after Ashley for the smallest things is disgusting and frankly misogynistic. She’s criticised for her self-deprecating racey sense of humour while men can get away with pedo jokes, and they act as if her upbeat personality is inherently problematic.
She even got cancelled for having “rich” parents. I’m not even joking. She was said to be problematic for not randomly bringing up that she’s from upper middle class on her fashion channel when she was already independent from her parents and maybe want some privacy for them.
The people who go after her are young women as well such is said. It’s literally schoolyard bullying behaviour disguised as “valid criticism” when they just her personality annoying or unlikable. But instead of just not watching her they decide to bully her relentlessly
I think the criticism continued because she has not addressed the original criticism, which was on her kind of tone deaf portrayal of covid and quarantine. Then the whole sustainability versus Amazon thing...I’m not saying that was right or wrong, she can do whatever she wants - but I don’t think her, or Haley Pham for example, will come back into favor with their former fans unless they at least address and/or apologize for some of their missteps.
@@WeiYinChan this is not to rag on ashley - the hate she got for her rich parents mostly came from all the times she portrayed herself as this lower/middle income kid who was struggling like the "rest of us." if she had been upfront about her privileged background, she might have gotten much less flack for that.

I think it’s easy to forget that the majority of channels are run by just...one person. They’re not this big movie scale production team, its just a regular person doing something that matters to them and hoping it matters to someone else out there. People have grown to expect the production value of Game of Thrones from one dude just chillin at home but also don’t want the creator to feel too ‘inaccessible’. It’s like no matter what a creator does they always lose to someone’s expectations.
Even as a small UA-camr, I struggle with perfectionism. I want my content to be as good as possible, but I don’t have the skill set to get it to that level. I don’t want to “blow up” until I feel like I have the skills to meet the level expected, like you talked about. As much as I want to spend days on a video, I’m in school right now and honestly don’t have the time.
It seems like creators might project their own expectations for themselves on their audience. I am just genuinely happy whenever I see a new video.
No judgement, no expectations to be blown away. If I subscribed, I like listening to you, and that's pretty much it.
As a casual, regular viewer, I would much rather my favorite creators take care of themselves first before worrying about posting videos that they at least can live with and stand by its quality rather than constantly churning out videos of diminishing quality for the sake of the algorithm while their mental health spirals out of control.
you know it’s pretty interesting because i feel this way right now and my channel isn’t blowing up rapidly like kelly stamps but i reviewed sia’s movie and its currently at 35k views in less than a month when usually my most viewed videos get at max 3k views, within this time i got monetized and it’s honestly so stressful because i want to keep on making videos so my channel is successful but my imposter syndrome is just out of control i get so scared of people hating my content and my ideas not being interesting enough either way once again you made another amazing video ❤️

I also think there’s a type of goal based issue with UA-cam. When it comes to best dressed, I remember when she got 1 million subscribers, which is a huge achievement, and she felt kind of disappointed bc she didn’t feel the way she wanted to. It’s like you’re hustling and you’re going and you get what you’ve been striving for and it doesn’t feel as good as you had hoped. Then I think you feel disheartened.

I'm a small UA-camr with almost 25k subs, but I just turned off my UA-cam Studio notifications a few weeks ago. I love engaging with my subs, but comments get weird and sometimes don't even offer constructive criticism, just rudeness. Or stupidity. I had somebody comment they turned off my video and would never watch me again because they couldn't stand my "vocal fry." 🤦🏾♀️ Another commentor said it looked like I had gained 70 lbs. I *love* being a creator, but definitely see how *loads* of therapy is necessary to maintain and build on this platform, because the anxiety from all the random people around the world - who are judging you - is REAL. Sometimes I just really miss the 90's. lol Great video! Love how you broke this down, and I hope therapy goes well for you. 💛

On a regular job you can’t just tell your boss, “sorry I’m not going to show up today because I don’t feel like it”. Not a UA-camr but an author and all of the above. I relate so heavily. The healthiest thing after 4 or 5 years was stop trying to please and stop trying to keep it a career. I stopped caring about disappointing people, stopped making content to make money, and months later, I was flourishing mentally and found new inspiration.

This "tight knit community" for small channels is something I hear creators talking about A LOT. But the reality is, while I've had some nice short conversations in the youtube comment section - it doesn't feel like a community as a viewer. I don't remember anyone's profile pics or usernames, I'm just there to comment on a video I liked. It's not so much a community as it is a fan club. Am I an asshole for this lukewarm take?
No. I absolutely agree. The only “community” I feel like actually exists (and often can be found in weird places outside of UA-cam too) is the Vlogbrothers Nerdfighter community. That hits in a way that feels it matches the word.

I am a very forgetful person and if a fav doesn’t upload for a while I’m not gonna get mad or anything. Literally all that happens is I’ll see their new video in my subscriptions list thing and be like “oh yeah they exist!!! That’s dope!!! Imma watch the new video now”
I feel like it’s easy as an influencer who’s job and income is directly dependent on their fans to fall into the “what if they forget me” mindset. It’s crucial to remind yourself that even if they do “forget” you they can quickly be reminded of you and start actively supporting you again as soon as you post a new video. It’s a very unstable relationship that can act as a really good or bad thing, it’s just easier to focus on the bad possibilities than on the good ones.
Literally I usually only notice they were gone for a while when they mention in the video 😂
This! I'm now subscribed to soooo many good channels that even if I really like someone's content, I never actually ran out of interesting things to watch, so I tend to forget about a specific creator's schedule until they upload again.
I'm a graphic design student in college about to graduate. In high school I just tried my best and I received a couple of scholarships and awards for my work and I was grateful. When I got into college I had this constant nagging about keeping up the positive momentum, applying to scholarships and awards, try your hardest even if you have to sacrifice your mental health etc. I wound up having to take a gap semester because of this. It completely drained my confidence and I had to re-find my artistic style as a junior in college (and then covid hit ugh).
I think sometimes we forget that we received admiration, recognition, positive reactions, whatever you want to call it just by being genuine and allowing everything we do to come from a place of honesty. People will sometimes like what you do not because you tried hard, but because its a reflection of you. Not sure if that makes sense.

Most UA-camrs are making money from the way they're presenting their personalities and perspectives, so any negative feedback feels and maybe is deeply personal. Seems like so much pressure! I could never do it, and I have a lot of empathy for creators, especially younger folks who may not have much other professional experience or strong support networks, who get overwhelmed when they blow up quickly and are suddenly subject to such intense scrutiny.
