  • Murderers of teenager Brianna Ghey will be named by the media when they are sentenced, a judge has ruled.
Justice Yip ordered the press can identify the teens responsible for the “frenzied and ferocious” attack on Brianna, 16, stabbed with a hunting knife 28 times in her head, neck, chest and back after being lured to Linear Park, Culcheth, a village near Warrington, Cheshire, on the afternoon of February 11.
Her killers both tried to blame each other for the stabbing but on Wednesday were both found guilty of murder by a jury at Manchester Crown Court following a four week trial.
Throughout the trial, media had been ordered not to name the defendants, identified only as girl X and boy Y - both now aged 16 but 15 at the time.
TalkTV’s Ian Collins is joined by criminal psychologist Dr David Holmes to discuss the story.

The constant references to autism throughout this segment are incredibly alarming. While he does say it is 'rare' for an autistic person to commit such heinous acts, Mr. Collins seemed to counteract this statement entirely by choosing to continue to make very negative and generalised statements in relation to autistic people. This was NOT 'autism gone wrong'. This was a case of two children who are utterly evil who happened to be autistic.
I am so sorry to every autistic person who is having to hear such horrible things from the media at this time.

I have autism, and like the expert states, those with autism are the least likely to commit violent acts. What we have with X and Y is anti-social behaviour (i.e. psychopathy) with narcissism and sadism. That is what has caused lack of empathy etc. Neither autism, or any other form of neurodiversity, is a factor re lack of empathy.

I agree. I feel it is more than likely that they have psychopathy issues going off. As someone with autism myself, I understand we have our issues. But for most ppl on the autism spectrum, they do not want to kill other ppl. Xx ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️

That’s tragic, prayers go out to the family… I’m straight and not really one for trans or lgbt… but that was cold blooded murder. They should be locked up in prison till death. If people can’t get over what another person does behind closed doors or what’s in between their legs they should find something better to do with their lives.. rather than rob a young trans girl of her life.

I don't think this guy's a particularly good psychologist... He explains how autistic people are more likely to be interested in objects than people, fine, but then he equates that with lack of guilt or empathy for others. He's just mixing autistic traits with psychpthic traits and basing very little to no evidence.

Not necessarily, its the interplay between the persons pathology and the content they're engaging with that has an effect on their behavior, moderating the content won't work, they still have the desire to observe violence. But yes media violence can contribute to that person's issues but to what degree is largely overstated.

    • @TheNeverists666
      @TheNeverists666 2 місяці тому

@@davehug5405Its all about the interplay between the individual's issues and the content, yes the content influences them, but that doesn't mean the content is inherently dangerous, violent media can make some people more likely to repeat the actions they're witnessing, the literature is pretty clear on this, Social learning theory, people can adopt violence in part through vicarious reinforcement, however this effect is massively overstated by people who don't actually understand or haven't read studies on the effect of media violence on human behavior. However yes it has an effect, that is absolutely irrefutable and all the psychological literature is basically unanimous on that one. - third year psych student.

I have aspergers and I have studied psychology. I find this man to be incorrect. What I have found through research is that autistic traits can look very similar to psychopathic traits on the outside but these behaviours stem from very different reasons and feelings within. What may look like autism on the outside could well be psychopathy on the inside. Psychopaths can easily disguise themselves as autistic because some traits look very similar.
I researched this subject extensively because I became very interested in it after being compared to a psychopath many times due to my apparent lack of empathy. It is incorrect that autistic people don't have empathy, we just struggle to identify and display emotions. We still feel them but don't always recognise the feeling. I have the same issue with recognising hunger and pain too. Sometimes we feel things too much and other times not enough, sometimes senses get mixed up which makes it difficult to identify what we feel. This is very different to a psychopath and the reasons why they don't show empathy or feelings.
All this being said, it is important not to completely demonise all psychopaths as it is a condition that they are born with. Like autistic people, the brain they were born with is not their fault.
It is important to remember that not all psychopaths are murderers. Some do live successful lives without causing harm to others. Also, not all murderers are psychopaths as people can become killers for many reasons.
In this case, I think that both of the killers are psychopaths and they are using autism as a cover for their psychopathy.
Neither psychopathy or autism is an acceptable excuse for the crime that they both committed and both need to be kept away from society for the rest of their lives.
