hat clip works perfectly but i find it doesn't fit permanently on the hat... sometimes it slides off.. so i need to re install it before each use to make sure it stays put.

Oh, and i just wanted to order one, because i seem to have lost the Clip that came with the TrackIR5... Seems i have to keep looking or see if i can get a replacement reflector thing for cheap.
+Tretboot Hi If you are interested, please check out my hand made tracking clip on my youtube channel or search for LukeClip on ebay. It is battery operated so you dont have to mess with power cords. It works great with PS3 Eye camera or other webcams and free software like FaceTrackNOIR. It is much cheaper than TrackIR but works just as well! Please share this with anyone that might be interested. Much appreciated! Lukasz
Thanks for the video chap, I just bought a TrackIR from Amazon and only later on I realized it was the "no" proclip version. I almost cancelled the order before dispach (I wanted the proclip package initially) but I decided to try with the hat reflector first and if I had issues, I would then buy the clip separately. You just confirmed my choice as being the best one. Cheers.
Are you sure the clip wasn't just coming apart like it is designed to do? Its designed to come apart instead of breaking and you should be able to just snap it back together. My trackir5 just died after about 5 years but I still have the clip I bought at the same time and its never broke and works great. I keep the hat thing as a backup but haven't needed it yet! I think I'll put the reflectors on a hat and use it that way when I don't want to wear headphones.
Thanks for the tip. I'm planning on buying the Track Ir 5 this Christmas with the Pro Clip. Oh well I guess i'll be saving about some cash without the pro clip.
My track clip has never broken in the three years I've used it. Once in a while when the headset is hanging or lying on the table something has bumped into it and the clip has come apart, but easy to put together again - nothing broken.
yeah... but i live in hong kong and buy my track ir from amazon in america... so when it breaks its really hard to send back!! Thanks for the advice though :)
I have the trackclip Pro and it broke. I use super glue to fix it and it worked for a while then the power cable were torn. I wanted to replace it from Amazon and wow... this piece of shxx cost USD 35.00 (Too bad I throw away the TrackClip, I thought I can rely on the TrackClip Pro). After seeing your video, I think I will just replace the TrackClip for USD 9.95. Thank you for your video!
Thank you very much indeed for this info. I've been wanting a Pro Clip for the following reasion : i have a TrackIR 5 with the hat clip thing, and it works pretty well. The big drawback for me (i play on a 3m wide screen), is that when i want to look too much downwards, the hat's visor gets in the way and simply prevents me to see the screen ! But now i've seen your video, i guess i'll either get a transparent-visor hat, or that i'll clip the reflecting part onto a headset or someting...
Do you happen to know if they sorted out the problems with the PRO-clip? Wearing a cap when playing a flight sim would be a deal breaker for me, as I can't stand wearing caps at all. Would it be possible to improvise with the regular clip onto a headset?
I've had mine for 3 years never a problem. Only reason I'm getting a new one is because I'm upgrading to ir5. The only real issue I've had with IR4 is the sensor camera cuts in and out every now and again, where it completely loses power and shuts off. I just have to plug it back into a different USB port.
yep.. mine broke too, in two places... I have discovered a new use for blue tak though.. works almost perfectly to hold everything together on my headphones. * by the sounds of it.. they should supply some of that when you buy it! :)
ALLi'm hearing about track clip pro is how it breaks, and breaks and breaks. I think i'll give it a miss. I'm using Freetrack right now with a custom made 3 LED hat clip I built for DCS World. I'm having problem with measuring the headset properly(its hard), keeping it charged with a rechargeable 9v battery (last about an hour before i have to alt tab out and adjust settings) and I find myself constantly adjusting my Freetrack profile. Is it worth me getting this Track ir with the hat clip?
Great information thank you. I've had a trackIR 4 for a good number of years and still think it has to be the best device for simulation that I have ever bought. Although the clip that holds the sensor onto the monitor has now broken (that was me being clumsy). It now perches on top of my monitor with bluetak! The only problem which I find niggling is sitting next to a window on a sunny day, reflections off glass etc interfering with the sensor. But apart from that, it's an incredible device.
I've had my Track Clip Pro setup for years and I've had no problems. If you drop it, and I do - often, it snaps apart which protects the vulnerable swivel part. Snapping it back into position is very easy.
I used the pro clip from day one and never had a problem and continued to use it with the Trackir 5. Used the hat clip initially with the Tracir 4 and I hated wearing the hat.
my proclip is currently sitting in pieces in front of me awaiting a project to make it wireless and not break at the slightest whisper of use. i've actually sellotaped the standard clip one to the top of my headset for the mean time. it doesn't work "as" well due to some IR interference, but its actually not bad.
Would it be possible to place the hat sensor on your headset if it has a rather thin head band/strap? I have a headset without the foamy cushions on the head band.
I know your video is rather old, but they fixed this issue apparently. Also in the software I believe you have to set it to say which headset you are using.
Thank you for the info, good video, I lost my clip and bought reflective tape that works good had to experiment with the tape a little, but got it to work.
SimulatedHeaven I think until Oculus manage to get some kind of camera to give you vision of the real world when you need, there will always be a place for Track IR. Trying to navigate my keyboard and mouse and Xbox controller and HOTAS is pretty tough when you cant see anything, not to mention dangerous when you have a cuppa nearby!
Agreed, steer clear of the Track IR pro clip. Mine has just broken for the second time, in exactly the same weak spot. Shipping to Australia costs more than the replacement clip itself.
Hi, my friend, I'm a little worried my clips now, my friends' had been broken few weeks ago and he bought a new one, so I try to find another solution now. How you make that hat? I mean it seems doesn't have IR led or something on the hat. And I've find another site sales "track hat", a hat with 3 led on it. Does it worth to buy or made one by handmade?
Hi there, I'm new to Track IR and I wanted to know if I were to buy the hat clip would I need to buy anything else, in other words would it be just fine if I bought only the hat clip with the hat.
I believe the hat clip comes free with the track ir 5 package thing. And it is all you need...just the sensor that goes on your monitor and the hat clip.
DCS World fan here, I still want a TrackIR system after all these years; but I'm still waiting for the day when it's 59 bux and doesn't suck :) Seriously, there can't be THAT much to it at the hardware level. It's 2/3 the price of a cheap 4K monitor! I'll pay up when it stops sucking (and it's probably very good by now; but still too dang pricey for my cheap ass--especially when that uber-cheap 4K monitor is only a hundred bux more.)
mine is broke in that place aswell, however i kinda make it work by screwing it so it shortens the cable so its sticks better, but its not really sustainable and it can ruin the cable. :(
The track-clip IS a bit flimsy - but mine has held up since 2009. Still going strong - along with the TrackIR5 I purchased at the same time. If you don't want to wear a cap, but do wear headphones... then the clip is a must. Just be careful with it - unclip it and put it aside when not in active use.
+Yammo Yammamoto Hi If you are interested, please check out my hand made tracking clip on my youtube channel or search for LukeClip on ebay. GREAT NEWS!!! - Natural Point has updated/improved the Track Clip PRO! As a result, the failure rate in the field has gone way down. Part of what seemed like a delay in how we responded to this issue was just us searching for what turned out to be a brutally inconspicuous problem with our original plastics, where they would only fail after being exposed to conditions that only appear during long-duration air shipping. The bullshit your trying to pass about the plastics failing after being exposed to conditions that only appear during long-duration air shipping is pathetic and not even remotely true. Just build a solid unit and I will buy one. I am a long time flight sim enthusiast and I've avoided the TrackIR because EVERYONE that owns one says they are made extremely poorly and the clips costly to replace. FFS, have you heard of ABS plastic or Nylon? These plastics are slightly more expensive, but they are bulletproof. You're using so little in the clips that the added cost would be negligible. I've always believed that they were made to break in the hopes of selling more clips. You should retract that pathetic excuse and just say you made a stronger clip.
The issue I have with the trackclip is that I wear glasses. Glasses reflect the IR causing the sensor to detect my glasses as if it was another point. This causes all sorts of weird twerking when playing a game. I'm surprised u don't have the same issue (since u wear glasses too).
Just started getting into sims so I picked one of these up, got it today..clip still a waste, the flimsy "clip" isn't big enough for my Corsair headset and it doesn't really even snap shut at all. Granted it's a big ass head set, the thing should just be spring loaded clamp then a little clip given the variety of head set sizes. If you want to wire your wireless headset clip this bad boy on, if not I just used the steel reflectors on that very headset and it works great.
Got mine out yesterday. My second track clip pro and it had broken, just like the first one. And this was caused by the gross neglect of leaving it stood on a shelf. Utter rubbish.
+SimulatedHeaven thanks for the review. I looked at the product page and smelled like it was not worth even near $ 50. I build nearly the same model for parts that cost me around $ 10
And I thought it was just mine!.....feel you on the cheap design,.... They should make the pro better for the cost! ( still a great for games with passive clip, and wider reflection views!)
Absolutely right, the cap headpiece is way better to use, my track clip broke recently after plugging it in to see if it still worked, only used it twice in around 3 years. I bought two more of those ones you got on your head from natural point in the USA as a precaution, you can make them yourself anyway its only a reflective sticker, get them from Halfords.
My one just snapped to 2 places after a dropped from sitting on my chair :( Had for years so bit of glue and blue tack it seems to be holding up lol :D
Made my own 3 point model out of carbon fiber tubing, the casing of and old cell phone charger, 1 10 ohm resister, 3 1.5 volt 50ma ir leds, hot glue and a working 5 volt usb cell phone charger. you just wire the leds in series with the resister. works perfect. you will have to smash the shit out of it to break it. i attach it to the right head phone with Velcro tape. I use it with FacetrackNoir and point tracker plug in. sett up to use track ir dummy. works so fast and smooth. much better than Freetrack.
The Pro Clip doesnt cost over 100$, its about £35 in the UK. Think you are talking about the whole Track IR5 package. That said you are right, its a plastic POS that broke for me in exactly the same place you describe. Been using a hat with the normal clip which seems to work fine.

Not only is it weak, I can not get the Headphone Pro clip to work right at all! It is a complete fail! The Hat Clip work fantastic but the EXTRA $25.00 PRO HeadSet Clip is a rip!!! I do have a huge monitor but that should affect the Hat Clip also right? That is not the case! The Standard Hat rig works fantastic the PRO clip headset getup is trash!!!
Broken things can be fixed. Naturalpoint fix it when there is a problem. The tracking with the pro clip is much better. The hat looks not so nice and in summer its to hot to play with the hat... without a headset i take the xbox360 headset without the speaker and cable witch you could erase. (Sorry for my english)
You dont have to look stupid, if you mount it on the top of your headphones(as fornt as you can to make it like mounted on cap peak) and you dont have to wear cap anymore ....I hate sweating under cap after few hours of flight. (I am too lazy to make pics, but I am sure you can do it ) (Hint:I use part of TRACK IR 3 holder , to make it mountable in few seconds to the flat top of my headphones )
It doesn't work properly with x plane 10 because x plane cockpits don't have solid walls which means the camera can ghost straight through solid objects like the pilot seat. Without physical restraints your point of view is not restricted to the cockpit. move slightly backwards and you will be flying your plane from behind the pilots seat or move sideways and you will find yourself outside of the cockpit.
Aye, pro clip is weak as hell. I plan to epoxy mine into a fixed position (remember to remove from head first !). Likewise Im going back to the normal trackclip, only Im buying a golf visor for it which should be comfier with headphones :)
Stop smoking a cig while using it, the cigarette will effect it's response on the camera. Go ahead and ask me how I know this. :) Aside from that, it's a settings issue, your curves are bassackwards it seems. Try uninstalling and reinstalling back to defaults, see if it corrects the issue.
guys, since their pro clip is pretty crap there's a solution! go to ebay and search for "delan clip". That thing is made out of bare metal and properly constructed. It works with TIR5! there's a video on youtube that even shows that!
I have better results with the pro clip on my kraken chroma headset v1 as the side bits of the headset are at a perfect size to hold the clip really solidly, not the greatest sounding headset in the World, was using Beyer headphones before but my track clip pro has never fallen off once.
Thanks for this heads up, I'm going to avoid that pro clip when i finally get the IR5. Lazy designing right there, this is painfully obvious. For shame Naturalpoint, FIX YOUR SHIT!
Not only you are right about how fragile this clip is, this device just does not work! Tilt your head to more than 20 degrees and communication with the tracker ..is lost!
i bought trackir with track clip pro, day i got it... it was broken inside the pack.. sent it back got a new one broke within the first week, there fkin shite!
Please tell me how the Delanclip goes if it's better than the Track Clip Pro. These things cost a lot of money and I don't want to spend it on some crappy, easy-to-break item. Thanks.
Hey thanks for the info, ummm, has anyone ever told you that you look ALOT like Radar from the 4077th M*A*S*H unit ? especially with that hat. ;) Thanks again!
hat clip works perfectly but i find it doesn't fit permanently on the hat... sometimes it slides off.. so i need to re install it before each use to make sure it stays put.
Oh, and i just wanted to order one, because i seem to have lost the Clip that came with the TrackIR5... Seems i have to keep looking or see if i can get a replacement reflector thing for cheap.

Does the Pro Clip still have the problem close to christmas 2014?
Thanks for the video chap, I just bought a TrackIR from Amazon and only later on I realized it was the "no" proclip version. Thank you so much for making this video! I was confused by whether a simpler clip came with TrackIR 5!
+Jake Jensen no problem.

Looks like the issue with the brittle plastic was resolved with this product. The company did mention this as well as it being corrected.
Thanx a lot for your feedback!!! i was thinking about buying the "pro" but after seeing your video, I am afraid I won't !!!!
yeah... but i live in hong kong and buy my track ir from amazon in america... so when it breaks its really hard to send back!! Thanks for the advice though :)
It definitely feels a bit fragile, but I treat it accordingly, and accordingly, I've never had a problem with it in over four years.
I have the trackclip Pro and it broke. I use super glue to fix it and it worked for a while then the power cable were torn. I wanted to replace it from Amazon and wow... this piece of shxx cost USD 35.00 (Too bad I throw away the TrackClip, I thought I can rely on the TrackClip Pro). good idea :)
I made my own TrackIR with camera for the price of track clip (20e). :)

Is it worth me getting this Track ir with the hat clip?
my pro clip suffered the exact same problem. Now it's developed a serious, intimate, relationship with sellotape. lol
yeah I can imagine lol
Great information thank you. I've had a trackIR 4 for a good number of years and still think it has to be the best device for simulation that I have ever bought. u could try but not sure how you would attach it...the setup is quite long.
I used some tire-ups and it works fine. I think an even better and elegant solution would be a couple of Velcro stickers.
I know your video is rather old, but they fixed this issue apparently. Also in the software I believe you have to set it to say which headset you are using.
Thank you for the info, good video, I lost my clip and bought reflective tape that works good had to experiment with the tape a little, but got it to work.
i have trackIR Clip. will it work with TrackIR5?
Will that work in low light conditions though?
Is there a new version of the trackIR coming around any time soon? or if I planned on ever getting one should I just go with the 5
don't think any new versions are coming out and with oculus rift getting more developed its looking like track ir may find it tough in the future.

yeah I broke two way too easily!! lol

I had the same experience when I bought version 4. The thing broke exactly the same way. It's a huge design flaw.

now that trackir/natural point has addressed the issue i know my clip/reflector is too sensitive to ambient light.

My wife says it's okay to wear the hat, as long as I don't go outside with it on! Was also wondering if you've had a look at the Kerbal Space Program?
I build that 3led emitter myself with a modded ps3 cam. It really works well.. kinda glad I put 1 day of work into it but safed me around $ 150
The issue I have with the trackclip is that I wear glasses. Glasses reflect the IR causing the sensor to detect my glasses as if it was another point. This causes all sorts of weird twerking when playing a game.
I'm surprised u don't have the same issue (since u wear glasses too).

+SimulatedHeaven thats because glasses come with all sorts of options. I choosed my glasses to be non reflective when I bought them.

I bought two more of those ones you got on your head from natural point in the USA as a precaution, you can make them yourself anyway its only a reflective sticker, get them from Halfords.
Gahhh, got it with the normal clip and trackir5 for my brithday yesterday. Had nothing but problems with the Pro, sticking with the hat clip.
agreed
My one just snapped to 2 places after a dropped from sitting on my chair :(
Had for years so bit of glue and blue tack it seems to be holding up lol :D
+Tony Kelly diy at its best :)
OH yeah the resister must be +- 5% so you dont burn up the leds in a week. it will last longer than needed with this kind.
The Pro Clip doesnt cost over 100$, its about £35 in the UK. Think you are talking about the whole Track IR5 package.
That said you are right, its a plastic POS that broke for me in exactly the same place you describe. Been using a hat with the normal clip which seems to work fine.
maybe it got cheaper over the years :)
SimulatedHeaven no the track clip itself has always been about that cost. it's still very expensive for what it's made of.
A $100+ plastic bloody clip?! And a flimsy one at that?! Are you kidding me?! Thanks for the heads up dude.

Hi Kamikaze1111 and onyxius,
So sorry for the very delayed response, guys. I don't know how this slipped through the cracks, but it did.
In short, we have indeed made significant changes to both the materials and underlying structure of the TrackClip PRO-including reinforcements to the joint mentioned in this thread. As a result, the failure rate in the field has gone way down. Part of what seemed like a delay in how we responded to this issue was just us searching for what turned out to be a brutally inconspicuous problem with our original plastics, where they would only fail after being exposed to conditions that only appear during long-duration air shipping. We couldn't easily reproduce those conditions in-house, so it took a while to determine what was wrong, and how to fix it. The new plastics are far more durable when exposed to these extreme conditions, and we've reinforced the plastics underneath to make the unit extra resilient.

Thanks. I'm definitely not getting the pro clip now.
+paul Smith yeah, its annoying!!
That's not the IR causing the issue, that's called bad game design.
Hello sir, just to inform that my clip broke as well, exactly where you described it as weak. Damn. :)
+Nicky Mezzina yeah its annoying for the price you pay!!
Thanks for the tip. Will steer clear of the pro clip.
Aye, pro clip is weak as hell. I plan to epoxy mine into a fixed position (remember to remove from head first !).
Likewise Im going back to the normal trackclip, only Im buying a golf visor for it which should be comfier with headphones :)
yeah its kinda annoying!!
i just bought it and the pro clip wont even track 4 inches from the camera....junk.
The pro-clip is the only way to go
I agree......weak as fudge!! The amount of black tape holding mine together is ridiculous
super glue it to ur head :)
loooool
Just have it surgically implanted into your cranium. Aren't they doing that with credit card chips nowadays? ;)
Thanks for posting your video!! You just saved me some bucks.
When the in game head gets to 20 the track ir will go crazy and turn the p.o.v. upside down, Help!
Stop smoking a cig while using it, the cigarette will effect it's response on the camera. Go ahead and ask me how I know this.
:)
Aside from that, it's a settings issue, your curves are bassackwards it seems. Try uninstalling and reinstalling back to defaults, see if it corrects the issue.
guys, since their pro clip is pretty crap there's a solution! go to ebay and search for "delan clip". That thing is made out of bare metal and properly constructed. It works with TIR5! there's a video on youtube that even shows that!
doesnt work on my beret or balaclava
I have better results with the pro clip on my kraken chroma headset v1 as the side bits of the headset are at a perfect size to hold the clip really solidly, not the greatest sounding headset in the World, was using Beyer headphones before but my track clip pro has never fallen off once.
if you want to sit farther away than 2 feet you need the proclip
it should work with most... hard to say as i dont own them.
Thanks for this heads up, I'm going to avoid that pro clip when i finally get the IR5. Lazy designing right there, this is painfully obvious. For shame Naturalpoint, FIX YOUR SHIT!
My pro clip has lasted years!
Not only you are right about how fragile this clip is, this device just does not work! Tilt your head to more than 20 degrees and communication with the tracker ..is lost!
Thanks, Trackir is just too expensive anyway now.
Had mine for 6 months with no issues. The hat sucks.
Thanks for the info.i was going to get it
i bought trackir with track clip pro, day i got it... it was broken inside the pack.. sent it back got a new one broke within the first week, there fkin shite!
They are taking the piss. Just bought a Delanclip for £40.
Please tell me how the Delanclip goes if it's better than the Track Clip Pro. These things cost a lot of money and I don't want to spend it on some crappy, easy-to-break item.
Thanks.

Thanks. Which one out of the variety of choices did you buy? I am really interested in buying one for Arma 2.
yep. 100% agree.
Make one yourself out of metal and IR LEDs and you're done.
RoyalChairForce What about 3 piercings with IR leds.................
lolnoobhax lol that made my day!!!! ha ha :)
lolnoobhax one on each eyebrow and one glued to your forehead, it's perfect!
just get reflective crowns for your teeth and smile while you play
not yet mate....too many games man!! ha ha
Thanks for warning
no problem
oh really awesome :)
My track clip also broke in this way. They are a worthless ripoff.
yep :)
Looks I have to find a cooler hat. COOLER and cooler hat.
its not waste of money its better to have a headset clip than play i a freaking hat in home .
9 Years later using opentrack head tracking is better because it's free not like trackir and tobi
Agree.
Hey thanks for the info, ummm, has anyone ever told you that you look ALOT like Radar from the 4077th M*A*S*H unit ? especially with that hat. ;) Thanks again!
lol no.... i will look it up :)
erogone mc Thumbs Up !!! ;-)
Sticky Tape!
agreed the pro clip is CRAP! stay clear.
Your rambling comments are very confusing
