  • We live in a unique time in the history of the Earth, when human influence on the planet is so pervasive that it is argued that we have entered a new geological epoch; the Anthropocene. The consequences of this influence spills over into the many environmental challenges we face, from climate change to depletion of marine resources and the loss and degradation of natural ecosystems.
In this lecture Yadvinder Malhi, Professor of Ecosystem Science at the University of Oxford, examines the flow of energy through human societies in comparison with the biosphere as a whole, the metabolic profile of the UK, and explores possible pathways to navigating a sustainable future on our human-dominated planet.
Professor Malhi's work focuses on the interactions between the biosphere and global change, with a particular focus on tropical biomes. He has conducted extensive fieldwork in tropical countries, and is founder of the Global Ecosystems Monitoring network, which conducts detailed studies of ecosystem processes and climate change in field sites ranging across Amazonia, Africa and Asia. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society, and was awarded a CBE in the 2020 Queens' Birthday Honours for his work on ecosystem science. He is a Trustee of the Natural History Museum of London and President-Elect of the British Ecological Society.

Thank you for a wonderful perspective of the energy dynamics of 500 million years of life on Earth. It clearly demonstrates the challenges we face today.

At first, I thought that this talk might have been focused on the Gaia hypothesis, an idea which I am not a proponent of. This talk is not about that at all. Wonderful talk which I highly recommend to anyone. 🌱

I feel privileged I live in times when I can access information such as this video about metabolism of planet earth
It opens my consciousness to the true nature of my life, and all organic life on earth, and maybe even other planets in our solar system .
It confirms my suspicion …”primary deity” was, and still is our Sun ☀️

My thinking is that all planetary systems have been in healthy stasis, but 250 years ago with the introduction of fossil energy, the planetary metabolic system was knocked out of stasis and all environmental problems result. I don't understand how we can exist outside the systems of the planet and believe we must drawback to living within the metabolic system of the planet which is only within 'captured' solar energy, not total solar energy.

Process of growing up should/must/will be reflected in your artwork. When you pull out a canvas from 10 years ago (and it didn’t get sold), and you look at it and you come to realize the subject matter is not important and half of the elements are not conversing with each other, and there is no harmony within the painting. Logically you start making improvements, or else why would you waist good canvas. You also don’t want to leave “trash” behind. You might keep the subject matter as a novelty item. And make improvements all around to make it better. Keeping in mind you were painting a lot in the past 10 years your style had evolved. Plus you have gained some life experience and decisions you’re making today for sure are different than the ones you made 10 years ago. All of the above will be reflected in your artwork, and it will be heavy with the luggage of one’s persons experience. Many/some/rarely/occasionally people will find your artwork related to their personal life and they will offer you money for it. People love to see something big, grandiose on their wall. A piece of something that reflects their own struggle in life depicted in someone else’s language a.k.a. art . #Bogoslowsky 🦁🤴

I loved in the beginning how you equate life as "being the only phenomena that takes energy and creates more complexity" (with the exception of some crystals) - Seems non entropic to me and very special in that regard.
Yes it evolves and changes forms through reproduction and death, but the life metabolism (the aggregate sum of life on earth at the time of measure) has been unbroken since life began successful reproduction some 3 billion years ago. It's like a standing energy wave.

Oh, how sweet it would be if I had a guardian angel in my art studio at all the times looking over my shoulder and anytime a painting comes to completion, the angel would whisper into my ear to tell me “to stop painting/working on this one”.
leave this artwork alone, for this deserves to be in the museum.
But what would be the purpose of selecting paintings for posterity?
To make my name into history ?!
I don’t care about my name after I die .
I care about enjoying the process of existence .
In my personal case, existence means creating artwork, because I don’t care about anything else .

In Tao te Ching Chinese Taoism, it says true creator, artist painter, such as myself, doesn’t have a specific goal, or any kind of end vision.
An artist continues the process with the best intentions, and the best knowledge he has, and in the process good things happen on the painting
At that moment artist must realize if those good things benefit this painting, so he will keep them, or if those “good accidents” are messing everything up artist can wipe it off.
It will be hard for you to believe, but Leonardo da Vinci was doing more wiping than a Rembrandt.😮
Rembrandt was too lazy to patch up the hole in the biggest project he had commissioned from the city. His epic masterpiece “the night watch”.
Yes, it has a big hole 🕳️ right in the center and #Rembrandt patched it up with paint 😂

... furthermore, wind and solar are not "captured solar energy" but diverted solar, because very little electricity is used in energy storage, and then only for days not years

“destroyed”? Leave a field for days and it begins to develop its own eco-system, years and its fully in Nature’s grip. The great cities of Mesopotamia all returned to dust.

Entirely useless, selective and boring lecture here. Failed to mention the massive greening of deserts that is happening due to increased CO2 in the atmosphere and the limitations/pointlessness of the central concept of planetary "metabolism". Energy flows are a much better way to understand what's happening. Also failed to mention the massive reduction in global poverty the use of energy has delivered. I give this talk a D minus, must do better. Expected more from Oxford University.
