S. Banerjee probably because it was too long and drawn out. Not a good production value to it. Just me and a camera. Oh well my feelings aren't hurt at all.
Just got mine in today - replaced a leaking DIY 5gal bucket external filter. Took about 20min to swap it out and guess what - no leaks! When i totaled it up I spent enough to get 2 filters....live and learn (I got the 304b from CLL as well)
Great info, just got mine today. This is my first canister all others were HOB. Planting a 40g and wanted better filter system. Thanks for all the info, I got the media with mine but will probably switch to lava rock if not happy. wish me luck.
Wesley Donaldson I am a huge fan of the lava rock. if I am to setup a new canister I just take one tray of lava rock out and put it in the new one. it helps acclimate the filter right away. plus if you have extra you can attach java fern to it as well.
I would like to apologize, the water flows through the filter from the bottom up. You should put your finer material of filter (in my case pot scrubbers and filter floss) in the bottom tray, and lava rock in the top and middle trays. sorry for the confusion.
I have not had any problems with it. I just ordered a third one for my other tank. I am tired of marine land and their noisy magnum 350. the one I just bought is the 4 stage filter, with uv. it was 60 bucks and well worth it. I will be setting it up next weekend.
Just make darn sure you have a few spare o-ring gaskets that seal the head of the filter to the rest of the canister filter... I dunno... maybe i was the only one who had the magical rubber o-ring that expanded almost a full 2 inches in in diameter instantaneously as soon as I removed it from the groove it was sitting in. Seriously!
Very helpful video for seeing what I would get for that model filter. I have been doing mostly saltwater and had had not seen the kitchen pan scrubber trick before. The Emperor 400 on my 55 died and I have a feeling a SunSun canister will be replacing it -- I just have to decide which size. Thanks!
Wal-Mart sells them in a 3 pack, or if you get lucky you can find them at dollar stores. I am glad people are finding this helpful. Also if you have a duckweed problem check out my channel for my other aquarium video. thanks for watching.
sir, my goldfish tank is 2.5'x 1' x 16.5" (h), 97 liter. Which sun sun model will be suitable sir? Will 302 be overpowering for goldfish for this size tank?
no response yet, I don't care anymore about getting it. the lava rock can be bought at home depot in the garden center. it is used for grill and fire pits
steven colon My brother in law has the exact same name, I thought it was just him messing with me. I believe it will fit in an 18 inch opening, and the tubing is flexible enough to bend however you need. I am not at home right now to measure it. I will reply back once I am able to.
steven colon it will give you an inch or so with the hoses attached. my advice would be to put it in a cheap dollar store dishpan so you can easily slide it in and out of the stand. just a thought
You did fine with getting the info out, and I like that you took the time to go over the small details and media alternatives. Just one question since I just ordered one of these for my 29 gallon, is the new surface skimmer any good? I see they updated it from the old finger type to a more modern air pocket floating type and with the old one people said that the inlet tube for the skimmer was too short allowing the skimmer to float off if you didn't drop your water level, have you experienced that problem?
Roland Cottle the intake where the skimmer attaches has many height options. I have mine on the lowest setting, however you can raise it all the way up and make the floating skimmer attachment not float off. keep in mind though the max and minimum water levels and set it accordingly. I just setup another one yesterday and found that the skimmer would float off. I just had to adjust the inlet tube to a little higher and problem solved.
Roland Cottle btw thank you. I have setup 3 of these filters off one bag of lava rock that I paid 8 bucks for. so not bad compared to ceramic media or other options. I used to use matrix in my cichlid setups, however since finding lava rock works better I never went back
The one I ordered off eBay also did not come with media. Even though it shows a photo of the media there is a small note at the bottom of the list that says NO MEDIA. This is the only one that does not come with all the media.
As long as they have no chemicals on them I do not see why not. It is merely for mechanical and biological filtration. The bacteria just needs a place to grow to help break down the solids that are going to be flowing through the media.
When I had this filter setup. It appeared that the flow would benefit from it being up there. I noticed that a lot more sediment was accumulating at the bottom of the filter. The water that came in hit the top tray first and thus why I decide to out the filter floss on the top tray.
no1wrench glad you found it helpful. I am not keeping aquariums at the moment due to family issues, but I do miss making videos about the hobby. subscribe and hopefully I will be getting back into the hobby soon.
I got mine from eBay the seller was called CLL Pet supplies (Wisconsin) they screwed me on my media also, 38 days later the media finally arrived....what happened with yours?
I have a different kind of rock all clean and ready to go. Can I use that because it also has a good amount of surface area or does it have to be lava rock?
you made a mistake: the flow in a hw-302 is from the bottom to the top. so you have to add the sponges and the filter floss in the bottom tray. I would definately add the filter floss that came with the filter above the sponges.
Thank you for watching the video and the feedback. This video is rather old, but I think I remember correcting it in the comments later. I was nervous as it was my first time doing a video like this.
Ron Webster sorry bud, but 2 of the 3 that I ordered so far from the same seller did. it was included in a box along with the hoses. it was a fluke on their part and they would have replaced it if I asked. I do not however use it and therefore they issued me a credit since this issue
Hmmm. I just ordered that same model and it doesn't say anything about including media nor did any other reviews. Your the first I've heard of actually getting media with it.
Ron Webster different sellers I have seen some have a drop down menu to include media or not. this one I bought said it included media. besides the point of my video is to show that you can use other materials
Ya buying your own media is pretty cheap. I also own the Aquatop brand of this for my 55gal and it came with everything but I paid like $110 on amazon. I'm setting up a smaller 35 gallon tank in my basement by the bar and I seen this sun sun which is exactly alike for half the price I had to get it. These type of filters are hands down the way to go. _lh3.googleusercontent.com/CzQWx4oD-TXX-jjiH9sx0Fu3_HqKAPnibExEydTryvBhZ82JrEb4nQpfjLnIwcsjo_kaqMVoSQ_
Ron Webster I have since gotten out of the hobby, but I kept just these filters and sold everything else. When I do setup another setup I will have 3 of these ready to go
the lava rock can be purchased at Lowe's or home depot. it is used in landscaping as well. You will find it for grills too at the home improvement stores
to start the siphon. you fill the canister with water, hook up your hoses and when you plug it in, you will have to start a siphon. you push the blue button in, give it a couple seconds, then release. do this until the water starts flowing. it pushes water through the inlet tube into the filter, and then allows water to flow through the outlet tube.
Anwar Habib1 I do not see why not. I would get the one with the UV filter and a larger size. this model is only rated for up to a 75, but they do have larger versions. good luck
Yes if you are investing the money to get an arrowana I would say setup a proper filter like a sump. This sun sun would only be good for short term. And also for a smaller tank.
fish And turtles I don't see why not. The water level is lower, but the intake can be adjusted to only take from the bottom with the provided tubing and intake tube. As for the filter media, as far as I can remember turtles produce a lot of waste, and ammonia. So the filter media contents would be different. It would be sponges, ammonia absorbing media (seachem has some, and there are many others out there too. The lava rock will grow bacteria, but as for the amount needed to filter the turtle waste I think not) and then a finer material. Turtle poop tends to break up easy when pulled through a canister, so a fine finishing layer of filter floss would work best.
Diana S. Either way you would have to wash it. I bought the kind for grills from the outdoor section of Lowe's. I believe it is meant for landscaping not grills though
Fill the canister filter with tank water up to the top of the trays. Put the lid back on and make sure your suction line is on the in, and your outlet is connected to the out. Pump the button in and out until you see air bubbles come out the outlet. Then you should be able to plug it in and see the flow.
Dock Dock good point. adding water to the unit until it reaches the top tray is what I used to do. then pressing the blue button on top to create the siphon. continue pressing the button until you see water coming from the outflow, and there are no more bubbles.
Dock Dock and this is just how I setup my filter. I will do an installation video for actually connecting to the tank, once I get back into the hobby. thank you for your input though.
Ad g okay what would you clean with? Bleach or soap? The tiny porous lava rocks will retain the chemicals of any cleaner you used. I had no I'll effects from it being rinsed. If you have any valuable input please share with me and I will make sure I use it in any future endeavors in the aquariums.
Why so much dislikes?...for a newbie like me this video was really helpful...thanks for sharing👍

so how is the filter doing? im about to purchase one these days but still wondering about the quality

Jonathan Kane
aaaaand just bought 304a ... there was no 302 in stock and you know "i want it now thing" ... cant be worst xD
304 is just as good. I am very happy with my setup. I have lava rock in my last magnum 350 so I can easily setup the new filter.
Jonathan Kane
whats the deal with lava rock by the way ?
This was a great video. Really well-explained. Thanks for making it!
Just make darn sure you have a few spare o-ring gaskets that seal the head of the filter to the rest of the canister filter... someone may have brought it to your attention, but the water goes to the bottom than flows up through the filters, biomedical and back out.
Marvin Perez I made a correction on one of the comments. The instructions don't really convey that information well
sir, my goldfish tank is 2.5'x 1' x 16.5" (h), 97 liter.
Which sun sun model will be suitable sir? Will 302 be overpowering for goldfish for this size tank?
Ceramic rings are some of the worst media you can use.
If you stuff it full of pot scrubbers it will be an excellent bio- filter
Fr 3feet tank canister... Which model i can use sir... Plz reply
no response yet, I don't care anymore about getting it. the lava rock can be bought at home depot in the garden center. it is used for grill and fire pits
You can but canister with or without media. Cheaper without.
I have 18 inches of clearance in my cabinet with back open was wondering if this would fit in there
steven colon I will have to get back to you. I know my father in low has a cabinet that is similar and yes it did fit
Thx just don't want to buy it and it don't fit like your review thank you
steven colon My brother in law has the exact same name, I thought it was just him messing with me. I believe it will fit in an 18 inch opening, and the tubing is flexible enough to bend however you need. I am not at home right now to measure it. I will reply back once I am able to.
steven colon it will fit perfectly in a 18 inch tall space.
steven colon it will give you an inch or so with the hoses attached. my advice would be to put it in a cheap dollar store dishpan so you can easily slide it in and out of the stand. just a thought

Can I use the square type of pot scrubbers or even the body sponges for filtration.
As long as they have no chemicals on them I do not see why not. It is merely for mechanical and biological filtration. The bacteria just needs a place to grow to help break down the solids that are going to be flowing through the media.
This filter filiter water from bottom to top right? Then we have add carbon on last box (1st on top)?
Where is your install video?
Why did you put the filter floss in the top highest basket?
When I had this filter setup. It appeared that the flow would benefit from it being up there. I noticed that a lot more sediment was accumulating at the bottom of the filter. The water that came in hit the top tray first and thus why I decide to out the filter floss on the top tray.
I just got the same thing and they did the same thing to me. Did they respond and give you the media?
Which media basket does the water travel through last? And which one does it go through first?
it goes from top to bottom far as I can tell. when they send it to you that is how they have the baskets setup.
the flow is from the bottom tray up to the top. Sorry for the confusion.
+Jonathan Kane that's what I was thinking. thanks I got one and it's not so bad.
I thought the water comes up through the inlets not down !
Thanks for the information.
helpful vid man. thanks.
no1wrench glad you found it helpful. I am not keeping aquariums at the moment due to family issues, but I do miss making videos about the hobby. subscribe and hopefully I will be getting back into the hobby soon.
I got mine from eBay the seller was called CLL Pet supplies (Wisconsin) they screwed me on my media also, 38 days later the media finally arrived....what happened with yours?
wichid cichlid gave up. I use lava rock instead. I also recently got out of the hobby for a little while.
I paid for a 304b on ebay it was 35$.I quicly found out it was a scam lol.should have trusted my gut.
I have a different kind of rock all clean and ready to go. Can I use that because it also has a good amount of surface area or does it have to be lava rock?
lava rock, because it is porous and will grow bacteria. I am unsure of any other kind of rock.
Pumice rock is good too.
whatttt? 302 has a top to bottom water flow...??!
Can I set up the same as you for saltwater ?
Hi Jonathan can you use charcoal as filter media ?
luke gnanapragasam No I am not. in a planted tank it will strip the nutrients out of the water. you would be best to use it in a non planted tank.
Can I use this filter to 75 gallon tank ?
I would recommend two. The 55 with live plants doesn't have much bio load, but it maxed out this filter
Do intake go on pump
you made a mistake: the flow in a hw-302 is from the bottom to the top. so you have to add the sponges and the filter floss in the bottom tray. I would definately add the filter floss that came with the filter above the sponges.
Thank you for watching the video and the feedback. This video is rather old, but I think I remember correcting it in the comments later. I was nervous as it was my first time doing a video like this.
well it says right on the item discription what you get and media is not one of them.

Does anyone recommend this filter?
Also where can I buy lava rock from?
the lava rock can be purchased at Lowe's or home depot. it is used in landscaping as well. You will find it for grills too at the home improvement stores
+Jonathan Kane thanks for all the info
Is this canister filter is noisy or fully silent?
Virtually silent.
My three are buzzy.
what is the blue button for?
to start the siphon. you fill the canister with water, hook up your hoses and when you plug it in, you will have to start a siphon. you push the blue button in, give it a couple seconds, then release. do this until the water starts flowing. it pushes water through the inlet tube into the filter, and then allows water to flow through the outlet tube.

bro buy allpondsolutions canister filter model is 2000efx plus.. 2000l/p
Can this be used for a turtle tank

Jonathan Kane didn't think you would reply but thanks!
what if I bought red lava rock?
Diana S. wash it very well. the dye should all come off
Jonathan Kane thank you!
Jonathan Kane would it be better if I just bought grill lava rock ? or which kind do I buy and would I still have to wash it ?
Diana S. Either way you would have to wash it. I bought the kind for grills from the outdoor section of Lowe's. I believe it is meant for landscaping not grills though
Jonathan Kane did the one you buy have any dye?
Mine will not prime. Got it on amazon.
Fill the canister filter with tank water up to the top of the trays. Put the lid back on and make sure your suction line is on the in, and your outlet is connected to the out. Pump the button in and out until you see air bubbles come out the outlet. Then you should be able to plug it in and see the flow.
