I was very emotional when you spoke about the aquarium because I now know you have an aquarium again, which, after hearing your story, makes me so happy for you!
Love all your videos!! I too used to love having fish, since I was a little girl maybe I started having fish when I was 8 years old. My first fish were Guppies, then as an adult I got cicklids ( Kribensis) I saw them raise family of fish babies, escorting them out of the nest and defending them from other fish! Then I got a salt water tank with live rocks. Corals, invertebrates, shrimps and all those colourful fish. I will spare you the details. For me it's a life long love! Then my husband said if we want to travel you would have to get rid of the fish we cannot go anywhere. So I said ok! I got rid of the fish but could not sell the tank 53 gallons. We didn't travel that much,😏 So now I have about 75 orchids and I use my tank as a mini greenhouse. That was something I noticed, a lot of people interested in Orchids also like keeping aquariums. Have a good day!
Hi, Danny! You're my orchid guru- I've learned so much from you and since I started watching your videos, my confidence in orchid care has risen enough that my collection went from my first two phals...to now 17! I go around to commercial businesses and 'rescue' orchids in distress and nurse them. So far, I've had great success with the exception of one. Crown rot was the culprit and she was just too far gone, unfortunately. I recently rescued my first denrobium phalaenopsis from a greenhouse. I was shocked at the state of her, considering the local reputation of this business being top notch. She was critical- horribly dehydrated, her blooms had what seemed sunburn and were brown around the edges and she was loose in her container without sufficient medium and to make matters worse, she was toppled over on no one had bothered to prop her back up and someone had cut one of her flower spikes so close to the leaves that one of the leaves had been snipped 3/4s of the way and was hanging by a thread...She also had deep dark brown patches of some kind of erosion on her canes. I snatched her up, demanded a huge discount because of the state of her and got to work on her as soon as I got home. 3 weeks later, and she's a completely new orchid- happy, sprouting a new cane, the ridges from dehydration are disappearing as are the dark patches and even her blooms have partially healed. The color of the blooms are deeper and some of the edges have filled in are smoother instead of appearing wavy and dry. I wouldn't have been able to bring her (or any of the others I've rescued) back without all your excellent advice and inspiration, so I thank you tremendously! All the best to you!
Hi Danny, 1) I want to thank you for all the love, patient, dedication you give for us to learn and participate with your Orchids!!! 2) I understand your feelings for the aquarium and your dream to have again one and now I want to give you something. I used to have a 1000 Liter sea fish and coral tank, where I never changed the water and almost never fed the ca 200-150 animals inside, and obviously didn't have a filter. I had to give up them for health reasons (allergies). If you ever start again an aquarium, start it form thinking about the water, what do you have to do to balance the water. Put in live sand, keep the aquarium in dark and put strong pumps to circulate the water and control the skimmer to make sure that the water values are OK. After 6 weeks add a lot of live rocks (this is the most expensive part). Always in the total dark, wait 2 months and control during this time the water values every week. If they don't get better, then add water pumps to make the water circulate stronger. If after 2 months the values are OK, start to add slowly lights and 1 fish. At this point you have to start to think what the fish is eating and be sure that he finds it in the sand or on the rocks, this is why you have to buy a very good live rock which came from the ocean. Once you see that a fish gets thinner, buy a second fish of the same species, and in most of the cases they start to eate by pure competition. Anyway, never add fishes which you have to fed, you cannot, or it is very, very hard to enter the life-cycle of fishes. Stay outside, create a healthy envirement for them, make sure that the temperature is automatically adjusted and the evvaporeted water is added and then you can go for 4 weeks in holydays and they will be still alive when you come back home. Again, thank you for all the love to give us with your orchids!
I live in a tropical island ( Puerto Rico) but in the coast area where is really dry and I have my dendrobiums in full sun exposure, some in pots, some mounted on palm trees and they are always doing great. Until they are stablished I water them a lot but when they have a good root system attached to the palm or in the pot I water them ocasionally in the week with no problems of drying out or shriveling. I give them full sun like for the vandas, arachnis, and for some cattleyas, not all because some mini catts are less sun tolerant or maybe for me. But the point is that dendrobiums need a lot sun exposure because they grow faster and flower better. Of course, you'll need ti aclimate them first, slowly.
I bought this rescue plant today and figured what it was from her videos...now I've seen like 4 of the videos, and she hasn't gone into what fertilizer? same as the paleneanopsis? I'm in Miami, so not knowing anything about this plant...I see she's using semi hydrophonics (lica same thing?), because they like moisture, can I use staghnum moss? I don't have palm trees, so they will remain in pot outdoors on my patio, and I see they like sunshine from your remarks above so will have to move them to a sunnier place, gradually but because it was so dehydrated I immersed it in water and the plant came alive. I guess I should cut the dead canes also...what am I missing? She's got so many videos, I love it but right now need all the info I can get for this plant...can you fill me in, I need to repot this in a day or two...
Loved the story about the fish and the side references; I totally related to you... Perhaps one day? Btw, I never said it, but your information section is always the most complete I've ever seen. Great job!
Danny, Danny, oh how I loved this video, it's almost like watching your older videos. I love, love, LOVVVVE the updates and the project videos more than the scientific ones. It relaxes me and teaches me a lot. Thank you so much for it and thanks for the story. Very endearing! I too would like to know how Milo is and also, I have asked in the past when are you going to do an outdoor video and your pot painting video? Hope we get to see that one day soon. Keep doing what you are doing. Stay true to YOURSELF, we love what you do.... Have a blessed weekend, Miss Orchid Girl :))))))
Hi Dani, I just watched this video & wanted to respond to your feelings about your experiences with your aquarium. I also used to keep fish & really loved the hobby. However, although I enjoyed the process, the more I learned about the needs of the fish & the quality of the water etc, the more time and money I was spending. I then had to go away from home. I had someone to look after them & they did their best but this was when my fish suffered. I came back & couldn't save them. I couldn't bear to start again & although I still miss them, I'm not sure I will ever have fish again. I don't feel bad because I knew I had done my best and the outsome was out of my control. I just wanted to say, try not to feel guilty or bad. You looked after then very well when you could & although it must have been hard to do you made a good decision in the end.I love your videos and your attention to detail. ( I have learned loads from you.) I hate to think you are still feeling bad about this. You are doing a great job of caring for your orchids & teaching us from your experiences. xxxxx
Thanks for sharing your story and your dreams with us. You’ll get that tank one day Danni. As a fellow aquarist and orchid grower, I know you’ll find away.
I have an aquarium horror story myself. I have always been into aquariums. When we moved to AR we set up 2 aquariums, a 150 gal freshwater tank filled with parrot fish and an 80 gal reef tank filled with live coral and exotic salt water fish. ( We are both chemists so we are familiar with what it takes to keep water chemistry stable.) After about 5 years we had an ice storm that was accompanied with a widespread power outage. After several days I was resigned to the fact that we had lost everything in both tanks. But we also had exotic birds - a breeding pair of blue front amazons, 2 blue & gold macaws, 2 African grays, and an umbrella cockatoo. They were housed in a 500 sq ft solarium built onto the house. With no heat I began to panic. We moved all the cages into the center of the house where it was warmest and covered them. But without lights and in the dark they would not eat. The ice lasted for about 10 days. The birds did OK but I told my husband I would not go through that again and demanded that we get a whole house generator. I often have nightmares about the birds. I often dream that they are starving and it is my fault. I don't have nightmares about the aquariums. We got rid of the large 150 gal. and after some time and effort we were able to reset up and the reef tank. So far so good. But I find orchids to also be a lot of work and study. So far not as much trauma.
Thank you for another great video, Dani! I was on the fence with SH with my 3 denphals. But with your culture info, I’m confident and will move forward with their repotting into SH.
Dear Miss Dani , those are necrotic spots you see on the leaves are unfortunately a form of Fusarium infection - Fusarium proliferatum. It is related yet different and not as fatal as Fusarium Wilt. It usually is related to bad media or plant stress. I had it only my Aerangis Elro. And it will appear on other parts of the leaves. The only way I was able to stop it was using a Systemic Non Copper Fungicide. Copper is very toxic to Dendrobiums , pets , and does build up in plant tissues over time , which will kill the plant. I just used the ones I found in home improvement stores like Lowe's or Home Depot. The active ingredient is Tebuconazole. The new leaves are not pock marked anymore. Best of luck to you !
OMG Danny! I used to have fish too, when I was 10 years old (over 30 fish at one point!) and I still have crazy, untrue nightmares that I neglected to change the water in the tanks or the water is either overflowing or nearing empty. And the fish are suffering 😩😱 I feel your pain. Having an aquarium really leaves a mark on our minds and makes us worry that we are doing a good job taking care of them. It's a lot of work indeed! But hey, if we're having guilt dreams, i take it to mean that we care a lot and are passionate about something, be it fish, plants, or people right? 😊 Anyway, it's great to hear your plants are continuing to improve and look forward to more updates! 🌺
Dani, I have a newly acquired Dendrobium chrystoxum that had 3 beautiful new growths this year, and each growth had some of those spots you're seeing on yours. I thought it was sun spots bc it did get some direct sunlight, so I moved it into lesser light and just watched to see if they spread. Sure enough, they did, so I figured it must be some sort of infection. I didn't want to play around, so I cut off as many of the existing spots as I could without cutting away too much new growth, then sprayed once with Physan 20. So far, so good...no more new spots!
3 den phals and a random cymbidium just followed me home from IKEA. They have a surprisingly good selection of orchids! They're all going in semi hydro when the blooms fade. Hehe :-)
Love Dendrobium Phalaenopsis!Totally agree about the bright light for the Den Phals - I kept mine outside in a shady spot last summer, and they lost a lot of leafs! During winter I had them with the Cattleyas in the southern window, and kept them there through summer. They receive direct sunlight, grew much better this year, and are all in spike/bud as of today :) I also have a Den bigibbum 'Anzac Spirit' - it never did too well for me, and then I changed it to semi hydro a while ago. It comes along quite well, and already sits steadily rooted in the pot after only a couple of months. Big success with that one, I think I never managed to keep up with its thirst for "moisture, not wetness" when it sat in bark ("Moisture is the essence of wetness" - Derek Zoolander ;-) Happy growing!
I have a Dendrobium Smilea (I'm not sure I spelled that correctly). I purchased her from an orchid society I think 2 years ago. The first year, I had no idea what I was doing and watered her year round. Then I found your videos and discovered that they like to go dormant from basically Halloween until Valentines Day. So, that's what I did. She really grew well this past year, but still no blooms. It's almost time to let her go dormant again. Any ideas? I have her in bright light, keep her moist, feed her, talk nice to her, and everything else I can think of. She is one of the few orchids I still have growing in bark. I would love to see her bloom as the picture that I have seen of the bloom is amazing.
Hi I've a dendrobium phalaenopsis orchid which has a small keiki. Can you give me some tips on how to grow it healthily and also how or when to fertilise my orchids
Dani, my parents had a huge aquarium when I was growing up, and I had my own goldfish in my room in large tank. Even now, just a few days ago actually, I still have nightmares about keeping fish. In my dreams, I've been gone for years, my fish are overcrowded and there's barely any water. I also dream that I have several very huuuuge aquariums that are empty and I have to fill them and put fish in them before they die. It's so stressful. You aren't the only one! I think these dreams haunt a lot of people who keep or kept aquariums. Our minds just prepare us for the worst, silly brains.
Nice vid. I'm thinking of converting one of my Den. Phalanopsis to semi-hydro. Please do an update on how yours are doing. Thanks for all the great information.
Hi, which lamp do you use as a room light? The room seems to be quite bright, is it just the sun or do you have a special light source? :-) Thank you in advance!
Love this video. I had one den and one oncidium in semi hydro and they did poorly to me until I watched your new semi video and changed them into shorter cup. They started growing. Thanks for the new info. One question. I had one den phal that I left outside early this year during a weekend trip. It started snowing when I was not home and 2 canes looked really bad when I got home. It started new growths right after the season came/ the only concerns I have now are the two damaged canes begin to dry from the top. They are still green at the bottom but I am sure they will turn to dry soon. Should I cut them?
hi danny i got my father's denphql cause he is moving to a retirement house and was stonedry it is coming bqck now with new cqnes but how often do you fertilize them and which npk and you do it after watering live here in amsterdam next to schiphol airport the plant is wonderfull great leavesand canes thank you
I have just inherited a dendrobium nobile and a lady slipper orchid. I would like to try and save them. I am not very educated on orchids. Can you help me. How do I send you pictures? Thank you
Hi Dani! Do you have any compact or mini den-phal? I recently purchased a den-phal purple splash and I'm trying to find good care videos but most of the ones I see are for the regular ones. Is it because they have the same exact care?
Is there a type of orchid that doesn’t do well in Leca? I’ve put all of my Cattleyas in leca and now I’m wondering if I should put my den/phals in it now too.
I love Joey from The King of DIY!!! I keep both saltwater and freshwater aquariums. I work 12 hour days and spend a lot of time taking care of my fish, birds, dogs, cats, geese, orchids, african violets, air plants, and I throw pottery. Oh boy, can't forget the husband, too! LOL So I get the time involved.
the new canes of my dendrobium suddenly became yellow and they were rotten....wat is happening to my orchids.... could you pls help me with any solution for this....?? please.....
How do you interpret stopping root growth? My den bigibbum's :) new rooths is very similar looking, whenever I spray water on leaf and tiny roots their tips turn grey from green, shouldn't I mist water on them besides watering day?
Hello Dani, I live in Florida and I have dendrobium that love being in the sunlight. I observe that a couple of my dendrobium stop leaves failed to open. The leaves stuck together; I got blooms from them but the top just didn't open. Any idea why this would happen.
Hi Deni I have a den phal that I'm trying to rescue. I managed to rot two new growth by getting them wet during watering. How much more can this plant take, it has no roots , will it get new eyes to grow from. Thanks in advance for any advice.
Hi sorry i m not Danny, but i have same problem which you have ,so yaa cut there all dead roots, and just leave them alone,in moist place, without media, they will sure starts rooting again, mine all did......they are hard to kill....
Why don't you keep an aquarium inside your greenhouse,it will look so great......I have two aquarium, right now...one with subhanki gold, and one with Betta...and planing to buy flower horn..
So glad to hear from ur past as an aquarist.. im an aquarist too, not very seasoned but..yes it is addicting.. very! When im out for One day i ask the person Who will feed my tanks to Skype me to see my babies.. and bélière me orchid + fish tanks or e en only planted tank is an hard one.. like 2 addiction togheter fighting for ur attention.. not easy! For me at least.. but hey.. what if u just scape a tiny bowl o something, just nice aquatic plants! Im expérimenting with some cryptocorynes in just a glass (wine glass) 3 month and already seeing growth! Like in orchid hobby there are so many ways to be an aquarist ! Think of diana walstad !! Im getting long, thank you for the video! And sweet sweet Dreams eheh
Dear Miss Orchid Girl, I have recently learned that Denphals are not a mix between Dendrobium and Phalenopsis, they are a whole different species altogether. I don’t know if this comes as a surprise to you or if you already knew this. I just felt like sharing this information! I love your videos!
I was very emotional when you spoke about the aquarium because I now know you have an aquarium again, which, after hearing your story, makes me so happy for you!

I know it is kinda off topic but does anyone know of a good website to stream newly released movies online ?
@Dariel Lian I use flixzone. Just search on google for it =)
@Hudson Ryan yea, have been watching on FlixZone for since march myself :)
@Hudson Ryan thanks, signed up and it seems like they got a lot of movies there :) I really appreciate it !
@Dariel Lian no problem :)

I didn't know keeping fish was so stressful!
That's a wonderful idea fish are my favorite too cichlids are cool fish to breed
I also have black spots on my Dens leaves. Even on the leaves of new canes. I think that they may lack of moisture. I may try semi hydro. We shall see
AudreyHorne. What is the name,of the new semi video?
Hey danni....hows your bird
Sorry I was hoping to get more information about them like should I keep them in bark do I put them direct sunlight?
Just type in the search bar 'missorchidgirl repot dendrobium' and chose which one sounds good to you! 😊
I stuck mine in the dendrobium Repot Me mix and it really took off.

Danni! Obviously you have to follow your dreams... your fish dreams too ;)
You will have one 😇 you do now !
I have bought 2 Den-phal. And I think I will try out semi hydro for them, but what do that leca you have inder the pot do. Just wonder😊
the new canes of my dendrobium suddenly became yellow and they were rotten....wat is happening to my orchids.... could you pls help me with any solution for this....?? please.....
King of DIY is great guy and channel.
How do you interpret stopping root growth? My den bigibbum's :) new rooths is very similar looking, whenever I spray water on leaf and tiny roots their tips turn grey from green, shouldn't I mist water on them besides watering day?
Mine didn't like Lecca. I use orchiata or stones in full Florida sun. They perked right up.
Omg. Love Frank ❤️ 🐟 ❤️👍
+Elaine Trostinsky lol :))))
Hello Dani, I live in Florida and I have dendrobium that love being in the sunlight. I observe that a couple of my dendrobium stop leaves failed to open. The leaves stuck together; I got blooms from them but the top just didn't open. Any idea why this would happen.
Hi Danny! I have a dendrobium ph and i don’t understend why she have some yellow leaves, can you tell me? Thx you!
Hi Deni I have a den phal that I'm trying to rescue. I managed to rot two new growth by getting them wet during watering. How much
more can this plant take, it has no roots , will it get new eyes to grow from. Thanks in advance for any advice.
Hi sorry i m not Danny, but i have same problem which you have ,so yaa cut there all dead roots, and just leave them alone,in moist place, without media, they will sure starts rooting again, mine all did......they are hard to kill....
U can also go for semihydroponics...
So use semi water culture to promote root growth?
deanna czern sorry i m not sure about water culture,I don't grow in wc,pls go for sh,dont worry, they are very easy in bouncing back...
An extra "like" for the end bit...
How many time to water.
MissFishGirl! Lol. I love it!!
Do dendrobium phals go into dormancy
Why don't you keep an aquarium inside your greenhouse,it will look so great......I have two aquarium, right now...one with subhanki gold, and one with Betta...and planing to buy flower horn..

Is that Styrofoam cups you've planted the orchids in?
Dear Miss Orchid Girl, I have recently learned that Denphals are not a mix between Dendrobium and Phalenopsis, they are a whole different species altogether. I don’t know if this comes as a surprise to you or if you already knew this. I just felt like sharing this information! I love your videos!
