I've heard the Scottsboro Boys recording before and even shared it with some friends to give them an idea of how long the term "woke" has been around. But some of the little history lessons are very nice to see.
My great uncle Lead Belly would be proud of the presentation video you put together! We have a documentary that I produced that was in the making for 15 years and I didnt get a chance to put this in the film. Many people are learning and understanding more of the origin of STAY WOKE. Thank you
Born in '87, I'm not even sure when I first heard 'woke' but I think it was sometime in 2006 when I started going to college in the city. It was used frequently in the Hip Hop underground, and at that time, I thought it was a word that was born from Hip Hop in the 70's. It was often used in tandem with 'Dropping Knowledge'. My understanding was that 'woke' meant you had become aware of the corruption of our society, and that you knew it was rigged against you, it had '5-percenter' energy. Fast forward to 2016 and I said Woke to some extremely toxic-liberals, both black and white ppl, who rolled their eyes and condemned the usage for being overused. Fast forward to 2023 and that's when conservatives started using it to not only make fun of those very same toxic-liberals that had condemned its usage 7 years prior. But to also, essentially, use the word to not only call someone a moron, or something moronic without explanation, but to also basically infer that themselves are the wokeness. It'd boggle my mind if I ever tried to make sense of it, but it really just comes down to conservatives pushing identity politics while pretending they hate it.
