When someone repeatedly drops hints that they’re not comfortable about speaking on a subject and you keep pushing it then I would call that unprofessional at the least and insensitive at the most. OCD isn’t a silly character trait the way the media presents it but a serious mental condition that tortures you with obsessive thoughts and fear. Howie tried to shut it down numerous times with jokes, but he just couldn't get the memo. Also, messing up Jamie's name was an honest mistake. I agree, it really seems more like a problem with them than Howie. It's a bit odd that this conversation has such a critical analysis with bias against Howie where it's the podcaster's job to make the interview interesting and get on the interviewee's level. Okay he got names and relationships wrong, could happen to anyone. Not enough of a reason to be cancelled. They didn't get that Howie was joking. Anyone could have gotten on the banter train. This is some bullshit.😊

It's entirely on him for going on a show and NOT DOING ANY RESEARCH FIRST. You cannot be on his side, it's 100% his fault. You don't go on MXC and get mad when they keep expecting you to run through crazy race tracks. You don't go on Deal or No Deal and get upset when they keep asking you to pick briefcases. I'm Rob's age, never followed anything Howie did tbh, but I have to be honest. Rob got really annoying several times. Almost exhausting. I don't think Howie was all that bad here, but this interview never would have worked. The personality clash is too strong. If someone with a mental health issue says they don't like talking about it and they get better by not thinking about it, you don't keep prodding them to talk about it. Rob kept making the entire scenario worse.
    I also don't blame Howie for getting their ages wrong. They do seem like they're still in their 20s, especially with how Rob wasn't catching all the hints and (yes, dry) jokes Howie was making. And I think the lack of respect on his part may have grown due to feeling disrespected, having his discomfort ignored.

So many things can be triggering (as someone in recovery for processed food addiction the triggers are everywhere!) and people don't understand that. Wtf did I just watch? Howie was trying to make it obvious that he wasn't comfortable talking about his OCD that he's actively being medicated for and some mentally ill person was doing everything in his power not to move on over things like having a cell phone in a bed, yet that's on Howie? This video is so stupid.

  • @JustHarrison
    @JustHarrison 6 місяців тому +107

    Just judging by what Patrick presented here, Howie didn't seem like that bad of a guest. Not everyone is gonna vibe on the same level. If anything, the responsibility falls to the podcast hosts to pick up on nonverbal communications and guide the conversation in an interesting, non-contentious direction. Did Rob and Jamie do any research into what Howie was like on his podcast? Did they do any reading about his not liking to talk about OCD? Seems like they're more at fault for any negativity here than Howie.

    As someone who works in the mental health profession, you never ask open ended questions someone with a mental health disorder unless you are 'invited' to do so. To me it seems like Howie was very clear about that. He was caught off guard and mentally unprepared to be in that space. It was obvious that he didn't want to dive deeper in the world of OCD based on the lack of knowledge he had over the two people surrounding him as well as the space. I think he tried to communicate that in a gentle, indirect way, and put it to rest. And for that, he can't be faulted or judged.
    Rob should have read that and end it there. However, Robs mistake was to keep pursuing answers from someone who was unwillingly being forced to be 'vulnerable', for his own personal gain. Why? Howie is not a therapist.
    Conversations like this need to happen naturally. Perhaps, Rob could have sought consent from Howie and make sure his guests feel safe and comfortable before questions of this nature are asked.

      I guess I see it as being aware of what you're doing, regardless of your personality. Even if your personalities don't match, you can still choose to be more intentional in providing more room for the other person to express themselves, especially if they are a guest. I haven't seen the full episode but it seems Rob kept trying to get Howie to "show him the way," completely disregarding how Howie might feel and not giving him opportunities to discuss things he would rather be talking about or that are more related to him and his work.

      If it is expected that you do research on your guests, then you'd think they'd know Howie doesn't like talking at length about his OCD. Honestly, based on what I saw here, those podcasts hosts were terrible, brought up weird topics, and don't understand subtle hints. I would not watch their podcast based on this video because the hosts seem awkward and not enjoyable to watch.

    For the people that don't know what OCD actually is, its not a fear of germs or the need to be clean. That is just one of the symptoms that not everyone with OCD experiences. The message Howie sent to Jamie at 25:18 sums up OCD perfectly. He stated he hoped he wasn't the bad guest they were talking about (which was the main point of the message) and also explained he had a good time and viewed it as them joking around with each other. When she responded saying glad you had a good time we were excited to have you on, she didn't address the obvious question about Howie being the bad guest they were talking about. Most people without OCD, would have ended the conversation there because they ended on a friendly note and its quite obvious Howie was the "bad guest" they were talking about. But even tho Howie most likely knows this, because he has OCD, he HAD to ask the question again to hear the truth from HER so he can get closure. OCD is OBSESSIVE THOUGHTS. So because of the whole situation, he could not stop thinking about it, and needed closure to easily move on. OCD is an anxiety disorder for this reason. He was incapable of moving on because of it.

    I found a similar thing with my OCD: the more i think about it the more stressed and emotional (on a deep and unconscious level) i get, which results in only more episodes. So, interacting with people, diving into work or just binging on some series actually helps me. Having goals is what also helps me as it results in diving into something which distracts me

Maybe I should be more empathetic but Jesus Christ dude grow a pair Rob, or a brain. Actually study microbiology/immunology/epidemiology so you can address your concerns rationally. Keep some goddamn alcohol wipes by the bed or something. Whatever, Rob is pretty remarkable for making Howie Mandel likable. How the hell did Howie even get all these jobs and attention? I mean seriously the dude is annoying, not particularly charismatic, smart or interesting, weird, and boring. Of course not as bad as Rob. Oh by the way the commenter on this video is kinda annoying too. Everyone is annoying here. I mean I guess they made me feel much cooler though so there’s that. It’s interesting to see these two playing catch with and thereby amplifying their OCD vibes lol. It confirms my gut reactions negative impressions of people being justified. These people need to learn not to give a fuck for fuck’s sake. Jamie is the only one I don’t hate here. I don’t get why Rob’s fans defend him lol actually I don’t get really why Rob has fans.
      Basically Howie was getting his own somewhat abated/in remission OCD vibes magnified by this guys’ over the top uncontrolled OCD who wouldn’t lay back on it.
      Also too lazy to try is an obnoxious name for a podcast. Look I could probably describe myself as that way at many times In my life but it’s kind of pathetic and not something to be proud of it enough to make it the name of a podcast. Anyway, this was a classic selfish, aloof, and incapable-of-empathy boomer vs. their resentful mentally ill hopeless millennial children lol America 🇺🇸.
