A note on 4 wheeler 1, The battery may have been too dead for it to start from the outset. I have that problem with a few of my newer toys.(Harley, ATV, & Snowmobile) There is enough power to crank them but not enough to fully energize the ignition and/or efi. I have invested in a ridiculous amount of cheap 2amp battery charger/tenders. When I know something will be sitting for more than a few weeks it gets a tender. Or if something has been sitting for the offseason it gets a tender before its season starts. The tenders are maybe $15 and they will charge a car battery enough to start the car if left on for a few hours.

    • @charlesmckinley29
      @charlesmckinley29 Рік тому

Also the newer toys never shut off. The computers are a constant drain on the battery and it they aren’t ran to charge it the battery goes dead.

Ha! You mentioned an expensive coat and brought me way back. When I was 15 my mom got angry with me for spending almost $100 on a big, baggy canvas coat that she thought was too baggy. I still have it, it still fits, it's still my primary heavy coat. I'm also 42 and bought it about 27 years ago.

I had my diesel pick up die on me during this below freezing spell, and the four wheeler wouldn't start either. My little 23hp John Deere tractor fired up every time and when it warmed up, i was able to jump start the big truck off my little tractor. I think redundancy is also important across fuels. Some times gasoline may be scarce or, like a few months ago, diesel was getting prohibitively expensive. Good to have vehicles for each.

You are so right about redundancies I had plenty of long-term food stored in my house along with survival items. Took me years to get. One night I had a very large lithium battery explode we had about a minute to 45 seconds to get out of the house. I didn't even have time to grab my wallet or my phone just the kids. Everything had stored was completely destroyed the whole house was lost. If that had happened in a good damn situation we would have been completely screwed. Lesson learned do not store lithium batteries in your home. Next time I do anything with lithium like solar or electric bikes which is what exploded. I will keep them in a separate block concrete shed.

Thank you. Good advice with making your own inventory list. The island with generator once a day cracked me up! As a kid living in the Amazon at one of the jungle bases the generator was on everyday for an hour or two for ham radio commo with missionaries in the tribes. I think a mom had a time slot for the washer. Redundancy was a must for my RN mom as she had clinics to set up and 4 kids to clothe. Food is everywhere in the jungle. Doubled up as much as would fit us all sitting on boxes in Piper Cubs (and adding Cesnas.... The name eluded me before.) Blessings!

My list is long....but being a one girl show here. I have learned a few things. I've learned how to hook up the generator, run it for what absolutely needs done. The horses get a 100gal water tank filled. I can also use the 50 gal for extra if needed. I can line dry any laundry and do even now. The tractor is in the garage and kept warm so it always starts. I'm still learning, but I've got this part down. Now I've got a few more things to add to that list! Thanks Bear!

Last week marked one year on our homestead. It’s been a slew of problems. In year one we replaced 16 tires on 5 vehicles. We have been without on demand water a month now. A pipe underground between our well pump house and the main house broke. With the storms we are still waiting for our home insurance inspector to get out here. If they don’t cover it I start digging. We still can get water out of the well just using tanks and buckets. I feel more blessed then ever being more independent from the system.

I think a wood burner or fireplace are one of the most over looked back up's. When the storm sandy that hit the northeast eventually made it to the midwest it took down a maple tree in my side yard, and the electrical line to my house was taken down by the tree. Before the power company would put the line back up they said my house needed some electrical work done on the roof. It was just above freezing then, but having a wood burner to heat my house with was it worth its weight in gold. Added to that my oven is electric so cooking or brewing coffee meant either grill or wood burner. I learned back then that the old stanley coffee thermoses from the 80's kept coffee hot for close to 24 hours, handy thing to known then.

True story, the power was knocked out in the neighborhood during a thunderstorm, whole complete darkness for 4 days. Uncle B had a generator. Wired it to the breaker box , now power is ok n, I floated in my pool while my burgers sizzled on the grill. One after another neighbor trolls by - you guys have power ? Yep. Out of 500 homes I was the only one with power , fans , etc while everyone was in the dark 4 days in July. Stayed cooled off, fed, and watched TV from my pool. Get a generator , and 5 gallons of fuel. Lights are important for sanity. People panic in darkness.

when i lived in the Ouachita Mountains around 1980, i had to drive 10 miles on forest service roads to get close enough to town to check my rural route mail box! your story about the island reminds me of that time in my life. i had to have my own hardware store, or drive the 5 miles 1 way to my closest neighbor's house and ask him to pick something up for me where he worked at the hardware store 45 miles away, then drive 5 miles home, then 2 more trips the next day just to get the part and get it home. being an old man in my 60's i was lucky enough to be raised by parents that came from mountain stock and my grand parents lived the simple life!

    Best show yet.
Have been prepping before it was identified as such.
If I may add a few things that have become evident over the past 30 years…
Air compressors and tire tools are more than handy. Extra tires fit that arena if possible
Ice maker if possible. Medical and good for occasional powdered drinks, if affordable
With the two is one, one is none ideologies needed, we kept a list, started by previous years receipts research, to identify needed backup items to have on hand.
… just a couple thoughts to take with you next trip to the morning dumpsite where I to seem to do my best clear thinking.
I always wanted to create something like your channel but that in my opinion is just one redundancy that is not needed… your the best!

Within 3 months of a SHTF, the population could be at 20- 25% of the original numbers.

We can be diligent in preparation for food, water, shelter, medical, transportation, and communication for the ones we love, however passing on the Word of the Lord could prove to be the most valuable tool in and arsenal. @@brianmorrow4710 My circumstances are a bit different than most. I hear you but solo is the way to go where I’m at. There are a few others spread around but the nearest full time neighbor is still quite far away. Not easy to reach in the winter and even harder to reach in the summertime. In 9 years I haven’t seen one hiker, hunter, snowmobile, etc even through binoculars or spotting scope. And since I’m on top of a mountain with an excellent 360° view it’s more than difficult to sneak up on me. The terrain and environment works for me. A helicopter is generally the best way in and out. That’s how I do it 99% of the time.

I've been on 3 TDYs to Fairbanks Alaska, and kinda fell in love with the state.
Best of the three trips was, imo, the December to January one. I was a USAF tanker jet engine mechanic. Hanger was hogged by the RC-135 we were out there to support, and a Guard tanker that had ingested ice on all 4 engines, and was undergoing 4 engine changes. I was on morning crew, so everyday, had to go out to the flightline to prep the jets. At one point, we had MEC issues, so for a few days, had to stay out there in the cold trying to fix it... Btw, the Guard there apparently has heated engine tents... Nobody told us, lol.
It got down to -70 degrees. Idiot RAs sent us out there without B bags, so most of us just had fleeces and nothing else. Pro sups bought a few things for us, and we had to buy a few other things ourselves. Best thing I got was a bomber jacket. I still wear that thing. Kept me warm no matter how cold it got.
I honestly didnt know I'd be that comfortable in that kind of cold. I went out hiking around town alone in the middle of the night one time, just trying to get the f@ck out of town so I could get some decent light pollution free pics of the Aurora (I was teaching myself photography at the time).
My actual station was hot and tropical Okinawa. Something I realized is that, when its cold, you can always put on more layers. When its too hot... What are ya gonna do, rip your skin off?
Before visiting on those TDYs, I never would have considered living there... Now I think living in a cold dark state with nobody else around you sounds kinda awesome.

In my approach with a fixed budget, my monthly shopping consumes half. This covers food, paper & hygiene. The second half replenishes milk, coffee, stocks meds, but more importantly the simple substitutions. Thrift store hits, subs for dog & chickens. The approach is keep it simple, look for multi use, and don't get sucked into fear. For instance, extra rice to supplement dog food (with scraps or eggs). Fertilizer comes from our chickens & neighbor cows, clippings. I think MacGyver on a regular basis. And I'm not too good to pick up roadside treasures. Our plan b, c, d for sanitation was extra poop buckets, a dedicated bleach bucket for cloth butt wipes. Tips from Bear Nation and other like minded sites, keeps me thinking, working and improvising.

One thing most people overlook is going old school and having archery equipment for food gathering and even engaging bad actors. It's silent, saves ammo for when really needed and learning how to make your own arrows and broad heads and it's not as hard as people think. I've got redundancy in both firearms and bows. I can take anything that lives in North America with my bows without changing anything. I use the same arrow to take tree rats as I do deer and I've shot European sparrows with it as well to reduce the invasive species and practice the aim small miss small mindset.
I also have trapping equipment like snares, open jaw foot holds, cage traps and dog proof racoon traps. The more ways you have to catch wild game and the diversity of the game you can hunt the better off you are. A couple small critters are better than a deer you can't eat at once or store. Sure you can smoke the meat into traditional jerky not this new stuff sold now but that's going to draw attention to your location.

Small point on small internal combustion engines, chokes thereon etc:
I don't know anyone who likes having to stuff with the settings that were working fine in summer just because it's cold.
My chainsaws work great in summer, spring and 'fall' (autumn)... but once the snow falls they get damn ornery.
Rather than dig through the manual for instructions on WTAF to do with the 'H', 'L' and 'LA' screwdriver settings every damn year, it was easier to get a battery operated one and use that for winter cutting.
That also is a kind of 'survival' mentality: Machines that need constant fiddling are not good servants, and waste your time.
Sometimes you need to make decisions to prioritise your time and energy.

I understand what you’re going through because last Summer tree roots grew into my sewer line and collapse a portion, paid a lot of money to get them rimmed out, then two months later other sections plugged from more tree roots and collapsed. Dug 40 feet of it by hand, and work for another month then the rest collapsed and plugged. you have to understand my sewer line runs 285 feet to the main sewer, so after all this is expense I still had to put out over $4000 for a complete new sewer line to be run That’s with me buying the pipe. So for a couple weeks or more no sewer. It was a crappy position. No pun intended.
The garden cart is a great thing to have as you suggested, but I will suggest that you go with wider tires and bigger tires for easier to the ground is wet and muddy or snow. Being much older than you are I learned the hard way, so that’s why I suggest it.
If you can’t afford the water bladders, take clean plastic and tape it to the walls and let it fold down into the bathtub and then and cover it with the remaining plastic. This will ensure that the water stays clean.
I am not happy that this happened to you, but it’s good to hear that others have crap happening to them ,No pun intended again happening to them and not just me. Lol.
Great briefs, as usual, I hope people listen
God bless all that you do!

All my winter gear living in the north. Is only good down to -8. Colder than those temps I don't go out. I once had to walk in those temps a few miles. Colder than -8 the lumber mill closes that I worked at then. -15 I had my radiator freeze up in old red jeep one Thanksgiving morning. Let it warm up for 15 minutes or more. We have a traditional deer hunt early Thanksgiving morning. Someone can always use some extra meat to go with left overs. Split the tank on the side of the radiator. Heating with wood stove only we had to leave water going as a kid. We came back after being gone to find a huge block of ice in the sink. It broke the drain pipe but not the water line. Had to use bathroom sink. Lots of music references. Proper ventilation on out houses in winter is key. Other wise out house become ice palace. Proper planning prevents piss poor performance. That sounds like the boat slip I bought fixed and flipped. I looked at buying island property. The amount of people vs amount of game was many factor in not buying. Plus shipping cost.

I have lived this type of experience with water on multiple occasions and have been prepared every time. My wife used to roll her eyes and tolerate my storing water until the first time we lost power and thus the well pump no workie. Of course without the electrons the heater can't blow warm air around the house either. I have a fireplace. I won't live in a house without at least a fireplace or wood burning stove. I need more redundancy but at least these real events have helped me to convince the wife that it's important.
