Very nice comparison! I have both the Xotic RC Booster and the MXR M81 Bass Preamp on my pedalboard, and use both for fairly different purposes - I’ve used the RC forever as my primary “clean” boost (and the Xotic BB Bass Preamp as my main _’SVT-in-a-box’_ medium-gain overdrive) and the MXR as the traditional pedal-based Preamp for a post-effects, pre-amplifier out to the mix. Both work extremely well for what I require from them, and if anything were to happen I’d likely just replace them rather then shop around for newer pedals. eEdit - accidentally posted without the last sentence completed.

Thank you for this demo ! IMO the RC booster is just a little more present in the mid-range frequencies, with just a tiny bit more clarity in the upper mids. But the difference is very subtle. Both very good products. Cheers \m/
RC doesn't have a sweep able midrange know,man it has only bass and treble,it's limited,how can anyone claim it has more midrange than the MXR.Its obvious the MXR is superior.And it is.
Great demo! I think I prefer the Xotic just a slight bit more than the MXR. It's got more.. Bite. Just a suggestion for if you ever is another demo: Use a looper and record a bass line going through the pedals. That way you can tweak whatever knobs you please without fiddling with the camera. Keep on posting man, you're videos help a ton!
+Jonathan Reyes i felt that the mxr had more clarity and the xotic was slightly muddier at the low end. and the cutoff was the same bur the boost mxr boosts more and the xotic between 25 to 50% i did not hear any difrence but it comes down to preffence i think
It's got more....snobbery,Xotic are way overpriced and believe me you can hear difference only in a/b-ing both pedals,anyway I don't care that one is slightly better than the other until they get the job done.Realy,is these small differences are so crucial.Just p,at the god damned thing and enjoy making music,All these gear are good.
Excellent demo! They would probable sound exact if the midrange was used to make it so - still an excellent video of excellent products. What a great time we live in!
Good comparison. It's tough to compare these two side by side because the MXR obviously has a more extreme boost at 100%. At the 25% boost, the difference was very subtle to me. It would also be interesting to see if changing the RC's gain setting affects the tone. I'd have to sit down and play around with the settings for a while to pick a favorite. But the additional functionality of the MXR makes it a strong contender for me.
The difference is far from subtle!! :D The RC is much more refined, tasteful, and ultimately usable in my opinion. The bass retains a clarity in its grain that the MXR doesn't have, which is not all that surprising for a mass production piece. It's much harder to do what the RC does than what the MXR does, and the difference would only be more obvious if you were interacting with the pedals in person. The sum of little details will ultimately contribute to make a considerable difference between something that's truly enjoyable and something that's just ok... Cheers!
The volume and gain knobs on the RC didn't match those on the MXR,Come on man MXR is the Bette one,both analog,MXR 6 knobs ,RC 4 knobs.Dofference in output levels doesn't make one better than the other.
I mean equally good sounds mxr being more flexible and has DI capabilities, BUT! You may also run the RC at 15 volts with Xotic voltage regulator which is a whole other level. Like super sayan mode on the RC.

Awesome comparison video. I use the MXR Bass DI+ and it sounds almost identical to the MXR Bass Preamp. Same crystal-clear sound & warm dynamics.
