I'll always prefer physical media over digital ones. That's because everything that we watch online doesn't belong to us and can be removed at any time. Still easy to reach at any time, it doesn't require any paid subscription and most importantly by buying these we've received a lifetime license for using them. But now i am buying a bunch of old games from steam sales😅 Even more recently, i bought a ps2 in order to collect ps1 and 2 games from my childhood. I got the console because of nostalgia, but mostly because I thought it was the only way to play them physically! I found this video because i searched "best cd/rom optical drive for my pc build" because i have also been wanting to start collecting old physical pc games as well. And this is the most amazing find ever!!! I am going to be enjoying so many games from every console, without having to collect all of the expensive hardware (unless I find one that i absolutely must have). This creates a huge world of opportunity when it comes to collecting games physically!!!
I love optical drives. I purchased one with M disc support. Was able to backup all my old photos and videos into single 100gb mdisk. I think they still are useful for archival.
This does help with streaming Jason. Rather than just bringing out the systems and go through all the set ups. Just treat this as a plug and play. Thanks!
Hey 🍗! Yes, great point here. For anyone streaming or capturing gameplay, this is a way easier solution. Keep it all internal on the PC, and it captures much cleaner and easier.
Funnily enough I hadn't considered this option, thanks for the reminder Jason! I have a couple PS2s that struggle to read discs at the correct speed so I sometimes get some stutter where it tries to catch up and load all the info from the disc, either that or in a couple cases it just wont read a disc at all. My brother has all his old PC parts stored away so I might be able to find a drive for free even. Worth considering looking into when I play some PS2 games again.

Unless you plan on owning nothing and being happy then yeah, you want a case with two 5.25" bays: one for a card reader and one for optical drive. Good luck finding a PC case that doesn't suck.

Doing a re-build, had a hell of a time finding a pc case with optical drive slots, Hades case is running out of room with newer components, is this a conspiracy to phase out optical drives? I'll wrench in every component to keep this case. I'm using 2 m.2 1 500, 1 tb, 1 1tb , and 1tb seagate hdd for movie storage. Its all about charging for dlc.
I'm still not sure that I agree. After having used CHD files, you can't beat the convenience of having dozens or hundreds of PSX and PS2 games, both CD and DVD, all individually compressed neatly into much smaller files. No need to change discs, no load times. And it works with other optical disc based consoles as well, including TurboGrafix-16, Sega CD and Saturn. I stopped buying CDs well over a decade ago and the last time I actually burned an ISO to disc to install an OS was several years ago (I now use Ventoy). Ripping audio CDs was the very last use I ever had for an optical disc drive, and although my laptop does have a DVD drive, I've pretty much come to the conclusion that these days it really is useless.
That’s a good point, I’ve noticed that too. Most cases don’t even allow for a dvd rom slot now, it’s sad. Although I do like the look of the clean clutter free cases. Maybe an external is needed for those.
So let’s say hypothetically I bought a CD ROM Drive that plugs in via USB I would just put whatever game I want to play example (hot wheels bash arena)into the drive and then boot up the same emulator you have and then play it directly off the disk?
That’s exactly how it can work, yes! Configure the emulator properly, graphics audio and make sure it knows to boot from the disc, and you are off and running! Enjoy!

Where do you find a computer case that has the bay for a CD drive? I am planning on building a new computer and would like a CD drive and a panel for more USB, USB C and a reader for micro SD. I don't want all the plug in stuff extra, I want it in my PC.

I installed an optical drive recently (LG WH16NS40) and I ended up having a ton of issues with it as a result. This is such a niche problem in 2023 because NO ONE uses optical drives anymore, so I couldn't really fix the problem. Uninstalling the optical drive outright fixed the issue, and I really don't care to diagnose further. The first roadblock to using this thing was lack of proper cables. The drive didn't come with any cables whatsoever, and in order to plug it into my power supply, I needed to get one of those wide SATA hard drive cables that was also compatible with my Seasonic power supply. Not only that, I needed an angled SATA cable to plug into my motherboard because my GPU made it difficult to plug in regularly. Also in the process of pulling my GPU out multiple times, I broke the locking lever on my PCI-E slot. Not the optical drive's fault or anything, but... the whole thing caused a massive headache and already left a sour taste in my mouth. Some things to keep in mind when buying an optical drive is you might need to buy cables separately. Once I had it plugged in and got it working, I realized that Windows 10 would randomly crash ALL THE TIME. I tried a bunch of things to get it to stop, and nothing. Google searches didn't do jack because no one uses optical drives with Windows 10, apparently. Random forum posts from 10 years ago didn't come in clutch this time around... updating Windows, installing the most updated drivers for the optical drive, neither of those worked, nor did all the other basic trouble shooting methods. The Windows crash report didn't tell me jack either. After crashing at least once or twice a day for about two weeks, it eventually messed up my boot order, making it so I couldn't boot into my Windows partition upon shutdown. So I ended up having to reset my BIOS to its factory settings. I couldn't discern if it was my motherboard or Windows 10 that REALLY didn't like my optical drive, but either way, the random crashing persisted after that. I was eventually fed up and uninstalled the drive entirely, and the problem magically went away, so... fixed it? Kind of sucks I can't have an optical drive, but... I got what I needed out of it for that 2 weeks and haven't had any other reason to need it anyways. So... I guess don't buy the LG WH16NS40 if you're running Windows 10 and a Gigabyte B450M DS3H motherboard, haha.
I have just updated the links to reflect similar products, the drive im using is much older, so there’s some newer better ones available now. A good name brand DVD drive will do fine like the one I linked. Links are good! Thanks!
Do you have to install any software/firmware/update or anything to get the blu ray drive to work? (For internal drives, not external ones via usb) Or is it just plug and play?
Oh my lord, you are telling me I can replay my old games that are stored in closet. ps3, ps2 maybe even ps4 and 5 on my pc.. 😖IF SO, 2023 IS GOING TO BE ONE OF THE BEST CHRISTMAS EVER😭😭
Absolutely, that's what I do as well, I didn't really touch on it (and should have) but another better option for this is to rip your game in as ISO and then run it from that sexy fast SSD you have. Thx for watching!
I wonder if this works for any physical reproduction games, as well? Like if I buy a repro copy of Def Jam for the PS2, will the PC be able to run it like it's a legit copy?
I’d try it in a windows PC and see if not works there. It might not support Mac OS. Look on the disc cover or back cover, it might say system requirements somewhere on there.
Good luck. Apple loves to drop support for obsolete software so it is extremely unlikely very old programs (especially software built for PowerPC CPUs) will run on modern Macs.
Actually you’re right, I did read about this in my history books too. Actually, from what I remember the cavemen use to rub both a DVD drive and a blu ray drive together and it would make a blue flame! Insane stuff.
By the way Do PS3 Blu ray games read on PC BD-ROM drives? I know Ps1/Ps2, CD/DVD roms read just fine, but I have never tried PS3 emulation yet. I know XBOX and NINTENDO made it a real pain in the ass to read their disks on a PC, but Sony never has in the past. I am just wondering, do I just YO-HO HO PS3 games from the pirates, or is getting the physical PS3 BD-ROMS worth it if I am planning on using Emulators only without real console hardware. Are the disks encrypted and unreadable (XBOX STYLE), or do they read out of the box like PS1/PS2 disks... (YES I HAVE A BD-XL WRITER already.)
I haven’t specifically looked at ripping PS3 games but I would assume it would work too! Just research how to rip your PS3 games, one thing you’ll need 100% is a disc drive like this.

Awesome, thanks for watching! Ya, Windows 7 is difficult due to support and compatibility. It can still be used, but it might be difficult. You'll have to find an older drive that works with your system, but that should be the easy part.
Great video. Educate the kids bro. It is kind of sad to see CD's go but the fact is that they want to take that control away from you (and say it's for your convenience) and make everything digital so you have to go to them, and you have to be connected/signed in/tracked/monitored/ with a risk of being censored or banned to get the stuff you already paid for. Not to mention what are you going to do if you can't afford the internet bill for a month or two? Modern PC towers don't even have a slot for CD/DVD Burners anymore but people with more than 12 brain cells and a few extra bucks can buy and external CD/DVD Burner or just connect an internal one with a longer SATA cable and set it on top of the tower lol. Do whatever you got to do.

Dang. Much love, the sun sets and it rises.
Your link doesn't match the drive you show
Good eye there, it looks like Amazon changed it, or maybe something else happened. I’ll fix this so it matches up. Thank you!
I have just updated the links to reflect similar products, the drive im using is much older, so there’s some newer better ones available now. A good name brand DVD drive will do fine like the one I linked. Links are good! Thanks!
@@TheHeineHouse ty sir.. Great video
Do you have to install any software/firmware/update or anything to get the blu ray drive to work? (For internal drives, not external ones via usb) Or is it just plug and play?
Mine was plug and play so I believe you’ll be ok.
Crazy how now I can get DVD writer as low as $20😂
Oh my lord, you are telling me I can replay my old games that are stored in closet. ps3, ps2 maybe even ps4 and 5 on my pc.. 😖IF SO, 2023 IS GOING TO BE ONE OF THE BEST CHRISTMAS EVER😭😭
Have fun!!
I got one cd/dvd burner one blu ray burner and a card reader in my 3 5.25 slots
I prefer to use my disc drives to rip the games to see if they work.
Absolutely, that's what I do as well, I didn't really touch on it (and should have) but another better option for this is to rip your game in as ISO and then run it from that sexy fast SSD you have. Thx for watching!
I wonder if this works for any physical reproduction games, as well? Like if I buy a repro copy of Def Jam for the PS2, will the PC be able to run it like it's a legit copy?
why when i use any cd-rom or dvd my pc just crash and dont open it i have to restart it on red botton? i cant use any cd
It has to be a driver issue, can you update the drivers in your cd rom drive? Make sure everything is up to date as well
I have an interactive CD Rom from the 90s that I tried to get to work on my mac with a cd rom player, but no luck. do you have any advice?
I’d try it in a windows PC and see if not works there. It might not support Mac OS. Look on the disc cover or back cover, it might say system requirements somewhere on there.
Good luck. Apple loves to drop support for obsolete software so it is extremely unlikely very old programs (especially software built for PowerPC CPUs) will run on modern Macs.
My gaming computer lacks most needed external and internal parts.
Can i do this with my gamecube cames on dolphine emulator and if so how can i?
Yes you can, you can select to boot from CD, and then launch your game that way. I do this all the time with mine.
And what about movies? That's what I need an optical drive for. :)
If I buy this can I I put in a PC physical copy of a game and play without emulation? Will the game just play !?
No, it won’t work that way. You’ll need some sort of software to play it.
Isn't that what caveman used to start when they run out of sticks?
Actually you’re right, I did read about this in my history books too. Actually, from what I remember the cavemen use to rub both a DVD drive and a blu ray drive together and it would make a blue flame! Insane stuff.
I think my dvd capable drives are dying.
CD part still works.
will the cd rom work if i buy a xbox360 game (nfs pro street) since its cheaper so i can play it on my pc ?
If you have the correct emulator, I don't see a reason why it wouldnt work. I haven't tried that personally, but give it a shot.
I don’t know why they call all this non optical disk stuff “digital” like “PS5 digital” when CDs DVDs and Blu Ray are very much digital mediums.
Could i use this to play xbox 360?
You could, if you put the disc in and then launch the 360 emulator, you could boot from it I believe
Will this work for PS3 games as well?
I haven’t specifically looked at ripping PS3 games but I would assume it would work too! Just research how to rip your PS3 games, one thing you’ll need 100% is a disc drive like this.
I bought a plug in disc cause I had no where to put a disc drive in my pc
Jason great video I want a DVD-R Recorder to burne off the Firestick or DVD / Blu Ray I am running Windows 10 in a Windows 7 yes I should update soon I had a DVD-R Recorder I used like a VCR to Record my favorite shows off Satellite and the Firestick the stand alone Magnavox DVD-R Recorder I had for 17 years it got to the point that I cant no longer use it record any help I would appreciate it .
Awesome, thanks for watching! Ya, Windows 7 is difficult due to support and compatibility. It can still be used, but it might be difficult. You'll have to find an older drive that works with your system, but that should be the easy part.
So limited by case. i have collected some physical DVD'S as i like the feel of physical films. so few cases offer the choice
Not everyone has a ultra fast network
Q.Why YOU NEED a CD-ROM Drive in 2023!
A. Install Windows 10/11 from DVD . If flash drive not shown
Just get to it already.
OK, I just got here... Where are you??
Title: CD-ROM
Picture: Blu-Ray.
🤨
CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, Blu-ray drive, all the same applies here, use your imagination, you’ll get through this.
@@TheHeineHouse So, rather than acknowledging you should have said "optical media" or "optical disc drive" as a more encompassing term, you insinuate I lack an imagination...? It's too bad you don't care about the quality of your content. I'm out.
It’s all good man, I just found it odd you would nit picking something like this. Thanks for your feedback, I’ll be sure to update my thumbnail.
Does this work for laptop? I have a very powerful laptop.
Yes, it would, as long as you get the USB version of the disc drive (linked in the description)
@TheHeineHouse would the Universal Drive Adapter also work?
@@NicDotNic oh ya, that’s another way you can do it. If you have an old drive and use the adapter on it, then plug it into the USB on your laptop, that would work.
@@TheHeineHouse thank you very much. Your video and your reply are super helpful!
i need to find my copy of vice city and get a drive
My closet has 4 of them. I dont need anymore.
Well, I guess this wouldn’t apply to you then would it?
YOU TOTALLY RIPPED OFF THAT GUY THEEMUREVIEW! EXPOOOOOOOSED!!!
But for real though. I've got most of my consoles in storage now save for last gen. I run everything off an old slim form factor hp core2duo that I swapped for a q6600 and threw an old amd hdmi card in there. Just a bit bigger than a ps5 or 4 and it runs everything gorgeously.
Can. You play carnivores on this
Blu-ray reader Blu-ray reader Blu-ray reader Blu-ray reader Blu-ray reader Blu-ray reader Blu-ray reader Blu-ray reader Blu-ray reader Blu-ray reader ... there you have it..
By The way.. I love media in the form of cds and DVDs... I just bought soooo many DVDs .. its just different when you can see the cover, the title and insert the disk .. I dont know .. I'm just like that.
If I'm going to emulate I'll just skip the optical drive and download roms lol
I already have 1
Dude, I haven't touched a CD in probably 5 years.
Ya, cool story! Some of us have physical copies of our games, movies and media. This video prob doesn’t apply to you then.
I'd rather get the Asus external bluray drive. At least I can use that on any PC
Yes, that's a great option, I actually said this in the video as well. Getting an external can be easily used on multiple computers, hot swap it around. Thx for watching!
oh shoot, I didn't catch that...I would have loved to find that BluRay/HD-DVD combo drive but that one came out 15 years ago. I don't know how much it goes for now
1:51 Gimme pizza…. P-I-Z-Z-A
P-I- ZEE ZEE AY... I want it!
