Always check to see what the mystery guest was most famous for and was pleasantly surprised to see Jane Powell is still with us as is her husband Dicky Moore.
I don't find Fadiman annoying at all. Gracious and erudite rather. Looking him up in Wikipedia yields an interesting theory. The early TV producers were looking for intellectuals to host and participate in these shows because TV sets were expensive. That doesn't mean only the wealthy are more educated but there is a statistical correlation between wealth and education. This may explain why TV seems more intellectual back in the early days.
Sorry but the show is dead without John Daly, like pop without fizz, pizza without cheese. I wonder if Mr Cerfs children had to battle the old man just to listen to rock and roll over the radio. He is obsessed with insuring that any guests with a connection to music, reveal that they too hate the music that took over the world.
it is indeed an interesting theory, and the look and feel as well as the people and situations of early t.v. is more intellectual and somehow subtler. i think 'bewitched' is another case in point: the early episodes were sophisticated and the comedy was done with finesse; later episodes, the ones in color, became cartoonish and broad.... i guess more joe sixpacks and sally housecoats were getting t.v.'s, not to put too fine a point on it. i liked fadiman too, but, he was no john charles daly.
What type and name of neckwear is Fadiman wearing? I've seen it on a few panelists from time to time but never encountered it in life. Can anyone help?
So... why is this a rare episode? It's gotten just as much air time as all the other episodes. Are you trying to say that someone hosting other than Mr. Daly is a rare occurrence? That would make more sense. Rare episode lol
Dana Wynter was a hottie and you couldn't shake a stick at Jane Powell either. Mr. Daley would have a more intimate "conference" with Jane too. When there is a different babe I have to check up on her. Miss Wynter worked with Rock Hudson, Sidney Poitier, Robert Wagner, James Cagney, Danny Kaye, George C. Scott, Invasion of the Body Snatchers (thats what I remembered, bit of a horror fan) She was quite lovely in Airport too. Passed away of a congestive heart failure on May 5, 2011 at 79.
the bad part of this show was the whistling at girls. (and Liberace) should have been stopped. next thing you know people would be twerking in front of the camera.
Of course he isn't, he's a substitute. By this time John had years of experience doing this job, this guy only one day. It's unfair to compare the two.
I absolutely love these episodes… the panel is so dignified, witty, charming… I could go on & on!
Mr Fadiman was a worthy stand-in for Mr. Daly. he was host of information please for many years.
A very fine speaking voice and personality.
I believe there are only two Clifton Fadiman-hosted WML episodes, so this is quite unique, very nice post.
Watching this really brings home how brilliant John Daly was at what he did! This fella was a real damp squib!
I was 2 years old when this aired. So happy to see these!
Dana Wynte is just beautiful.
i love this show

Interesting to see Fadiman. Thanks very much.
He also ran a TV station for Aquinas College, also in Grand Rapids, that was in 1956
Fadiman says Dallas, that's a big town. Boy would they be surprised just how big in Nov. 1963.
The second guest should have appeared on "The Name's the Same", which Fadiman also hosted.
Fadiman hosted Information Please on the radio for many years
and the audience applauded. well, the times they were a-changin', and they'd be changin' real soon for those folks.
@22:00: "Have you appeared in any night clubs, or hotel rooms? I LOVE ARLENE!!
The name of the show Fr. Behean hosted on WOOD-TV was "Fifteen With Father"

Rock and Roll... it won't last.

It hooked me!
In later Bewitched episodes a number of the shows were basically rewrites of earlier episodes
Do I sense a small tension between Bennett Cerf and Clifton Fadiman?
I wonder if the priest and the hairdresser shared a moment backstage.
Not just Fr. Behean, but Jane Powell as well.
It is DANA WINTERS not Donna
wait a sec... the 50's, and a minister... WHO IS LEFT HANDED?! It was the beginning of progress.
At 12:38, Bennett and the priest blast that devil rock and roll!
15:45 - 16:00 three types of neckwear, not a conventional tie in sight on this show !

The signing in is a little odd.
Connie Stevens
I think Clifton Fadiman was a better host than John Daly.
+Zenith Stratosphere Great information -- thanks
Dana Wynter was hot
Connie stevens
TV wasn't his first profession...He was a journalist by trade...So he comes across stiff
12:45 because Rock "n" Roll is the SPAWN OF SATAN Y'ALL!!!!!
0% rock & roll - bet all these people clapping are turning in t
heir graves all these years later as 95% of music today is rock & roll
am glad this guy hosted only twice. very annoying.
This guy is not nearly as good as John Daily
Agreed. He is terrible. I could have dome a better job. He interrupted too much and was not aware of much in the way of nuance.
