I have gone through many a mat over the years and as I got older and wiser decided to try the more expensive brands out. The best 2 brands I’ve personally used are therm a rest and Exped. Don’t get me wrong I’ve had expensive mats fail but customer service sorted me out. I’ve had 2 very good (but fairly expensive) Exped mats for about the last 6 or 7 years and until I feel they have failed me I’ll stick with the brand.
I have a double version of klymit with two separate valves and works great. WIth an insulated foil mat under I sleep on the top of Ben Nevis 25 December and was warm. Warm enough to be just In my t-shirt and long jones without socks.
I watched another review by Lonewolf902 of the Klymit pads and they said they were much colder than other pads at lower stated R values. When they contacted Klymit they said the down in your sleeping bag is designed to fill the channels to give the insulation. Problem is that in reality it doesn't work like that and they are garbage for cold weather use and their R value does not match the R value of other pads.
The reflective mat would go on top of the air mat directly under you in order to work as designed. Emergency mylar and the like is exponentially ineffective the further it is from the heat spruce, which is you. That is designed to reflect your heat back at you not as a barrier to keep cold away. So the proper layering is air mattress, mylar then you and your sleeping bag. If it's super cold you can even put that in the sleeping bag . That's how it's supposed to work. Reflect your heat. The only reason I say super cold is those things actually make it hot when right up against the body inside the sleeping bag and you risk sweating
I use my static V with a foil pad on top. Its warmer that way. Its a good bag but remember the material under you means nothing. Put the foil on top and reflect your heat back.😊
i have been using a static v for a few years, it's never let me down, and gives me more room in the bivvy bag, but i also use a closed cell foam mat but no reflector.
Great review, this is an issue for my partner, she hates the cold. We use Sea To Summit Camp Self Inflating Sleeping Mat - Large Olive, it has a 4.2 R rating. It is heavier, but it does have memory foam inside so if there is any deflation, youll still be off the ground, and still warm.

@@englishwoodsman Could you do a review of the Light Tour 5.8 pad, please? Not much online about it. Looks good to me, but not got the rep of the big brands.
As I’m on a budget and can’t afford things like the thermorest or nemo I decided it’s worth putting up with the extra bulk and weight of a Vango trek pro self inflating with a generic z mat.. I didn’t have any faith in the klymit as there’s too much space between the inflated areas which is sure to mean heat is lost in those areas
Good video Dan I’ve got a klymit insulated v and it is warm enough when used with any sort of foam mat at freezing temperatures. That’s fine you’d think but then it’s no better than my thermarest uberlight on top of the same mat. There is no way the R rating of the klymit is 5. The uberlight is much lighter, warmer, more comfy BUT twice the price at least. I like the klymit static vs but they are flawed in terms of design as you say. They have their place as a good budget option but their prices are going up making them hard to recommend for UK winter, spring use. The big downside with the thermarests is the crinkly noise they make, the warmer version you get, the worse it is. Definitely try before you buy if you can. Another point worth considering about blowing the cash on a good mat is you can get away with lighter sleeping bag, saving weight there too
Using a down sleeping bag has its disadvantages too if it gets compressed it's useless. Unless you have another insulation between you and the matt ,but manufacturers should say how they got to the r rating conclusions, just looking at it you can see that it was not designed correctly, and your right it should not be given an r rating of 5 ,maybe OK in summer or autumn but not winter .there are a lot better competitors out there that are cheaper and more honest ..Great review..thanks again mate God bless. It's interesting your comments on this mat. I've got the klimate static v Lux (The extra wide one) as well as the hammock v. Lux. Have to say I've never had a problem like you're describing. I use two different sleeping bags. One a RAB down bag and the other one a down Chinese knockoff thing. I've also got mattresses that are £20 £30 off Amazon as well as as thermarests most expensive and also expeds down mat. The only ones that I don't rate are the cheap ones. The warmest one is either the static V-Lux or the exped. If it came down to money having paid around £90 for the static v Lux wide I nearly double for the exped. I know which one that I'll be buying again If I was on a budget. It's a shame that you don't like it. I really really rate them especially for the money they cost. Perhaps you got one that wasn't filled as well as the one that I've got. My one is the slightly older version. It's the same style. Just the valves are twists jobs.

Dan I think a lot of people forget about wind direction. Thats what i worked out after having spent many nights under tarps and in hammocks arranging my gear to block the wind. If there's no wind then it's wrong gear lol
Have to say I'm very impressed with my Static V. I do use thermarest foam ridgecrest under mine. Only cold I ever feel is through my sleeping bag, not underside. Haven't tested below 20F though.
I reckon that your body heat is travelling along the V grooves to the outside edge of the mat. If the V's had blocks on them to create air pockets it might solve the problem. Imagine that each groove of the V looks like this ---------------- you will see that air can flow freely from one end to the other. If there were baffles/blocks/wall along each groove so that it looks like --|--|--|--|-- the warm air from your body would stay in each |--| section and not escape to the edges.
The thing is with Klymit is unlike Sea to Summit / Thermarest and so on they don't actually test there pads, so I read and have seen. So whatever 'R rating' they claim the insulated static V is may not actually be. I do have one myself though and have had it in around -6°c with a Rab Ascent 900 sleeping bag in the Lakes and been fine. Not as warm as my Neoair Xtherm but wasn't cold. Do you use your breath you inflate it lile at the start? This time of year the damp from your breath can affect the R rating of pads and better to use a tiny pump or inflation sack. It definitely wouldn't be my go to pad for the conditions this time of year though. My Thermarest Neoair Xtherm would be top by far... then my Sea to Summit Ether Light XT Extreme then maybe the Klymit insulated static V. Like I said ive had it in -6°c and been fine in the tent. Hope you sort it pal 👍🏻👍🏻 ATB... Chris
Hi , I have a question. Are those thermarest Alps usable in Warmer climate? The lowest temperature I will encounter will be like 5+ degrees Will it be to warm ? I am just looking for a comfortable mat. And I will combine it with a field bed .
I am surprised. Klymit are known to have over-estimated their R-value but my normal insulated static v has always kept me pretty warm. Out-lasted any of the other pads I have owned too.
@@banshee107 -35C / -31F with a 2R v grooved junk pad and a 2R ASTM for a total at MOST 4R? ......Come on man. Who you trying to fool? You NEED a real winter pad, of at LEAST 6 R ASTM, preferably 7 R for temps like that. ^ This is why you test your gear on home or car camping folks. You can't just trust people. They've got something to sell. That's TOTAL and complete BS. That wouldn't even be safe for HALF way down those temps. No one in Canada is sleeping on a trash Klymit in winter. The selling of an Xtherm ( a pad that WOULD actually work in those temps!) makes it extra rich lol. Sure. You went and WAY oversold your story bud.
Got one of these mats. Paid £60 at the time. Sent the first one back as the valve had a slow leak. Replacement was fine though. Mine is R-value 4.2 and it wasn't quite up to camping below around 2°C in my experience. I bought the quilted cover which is designed for it and that did the trick. It's like a Thermolite insulated layer. I think the issue with the mat is its simply not as good as it claims to be on R-value. It's not far off but not quite there for 4 season camping. There are a small number of options when it comes to winter mats but I've now got the Thermarest Neoair XTherm and despite being pricey, you get what you pay for. I still like the static V but it's no longer my go to mat. I either use the Xlite or the XTherm.
I have the hammock v version of this. I use it in my bivvi bag with a thin foam mat under the bivvi. I used to use it under a gathered end hammock with a jungle blanket as an underquilt down to -5 and was toasty. Inside the bivvi i tend to place the jungle blanket under this also and it works amazing. Combined with a jungle blanket and 3mm eva mat and carenthea defence 4 i sleep in just thermals and am super toasty. Perhaps one of the issues here is you are wearing too much insulation inside your bag? Remember, you geberate the heat inside your bag which means that if you are insulated inside your bag the heat doesnt fill the bag. That being said, if you then have a cold bag the mat will not work. Just my 2p
I've got the Static V insulated mat. Only used it in freezing conditions while fishing and in army double bag and was hot, but I was also raised off the ground. HOWEVER, I can't get away with the mat. Too thin for a slide sleeper, so I'm looking at 10cm mats from Sea to Summit or Big Agnes
Companies can legally say any r value they like even if it's not true. Only the mats that have been ASTM tested have a true r value. This Klymit mat actually got astm tested but only got an r value of 1.5 or 2 ! I was always freezing cold on mine and when I found out why I sold it. It's a shame because it was very comfortable.
I've had a similar exprerience with Klymit pads. I bought the Insulated Hammock V which has an advertised R-value of 4.3. The idea was to pair this mat with a Bushmen Glow (-12C rated) quilt so I could thermal stack and hammock camp in winter here in Finland. Turns out it's actually more like 1.9 according to the newer ASTM ratings. It's a con, because Klymit are STILL calling it a 4-season mat on their website and it certainly isn't, and still have the bloody cheek to charge up to 200 euros for it. It's a pity because it's comfortable in the hammock (DD Frontline) but is only suitable for summer. Buyer beware!
Blimey, bet that’s a heavy, bulky beast.. I’m wincing at my 2cm self inflating foam pad lol.. but then I’m always comparing to the ultralight ultra packable kit 😂..
Hey Dan I’ve tried the reflectic a foam mat then an inflatable mat then my 900 fill sleeping bag with thin liner only in winter a few times it’s been fine down to minus 3-5. I’d try a polyester blankets over the inflatable mat
I was looking for a winter mat a while ago and found the klymit like you, I looked at the reviews and alot of people were having the same problem with the baffle welds losing heat retention. I ended up buying an exped synmat 7 in the end and it's been amazing
I’m surprised at this. I have used the insulated static v for several years now in all conditions including below 0 and not had any problems with feeling the cold. My valve broke on my original one after 2 or so years of use and they couldn’t have been better at getting a replacement sorted for me that has a new and improved valve. Excellent customer service and love the product. Great value for money and highly recommended by me
I have one but the r value is 2 its not an insulated one,but ive had no issues with it at all,i always use a foil under mat with it too,ive been down to only -1 but never had an issue, very happy with it
I was the same needed a winter system. Did not want to shell out £200. Then dropped on ECOTEK Hybern8 only £60. R value of 4.5. Not used it yet so will be interested to see how good. I currently have the UL80 but not insulated.
I'm no expert but I reckon your right. Those slits are thin. .. have you tried putting the foil sheet on top of the pad to reflect heat from your body? Maybe get two and make a foil sleeve to slide the mat inside it like a silver tube? (Tape edges together)... Actually, could maybe try putting a foam mat and your unigear pad inside it to see if that winterize your unigear? Good experiment idea.
I wouldn't waste money getting budget camping gear for cold weather. I have tried in the past but it's a false economy. You do get what you pay for, sad to say. As someone else has mentioned, for me it's either an Exped, or my personal choice is the Therm-A-Rest NeoAir XTherm... Sure, it's expensive but buy once and get it right. R-rating of 6.9 and it does the job!
Hi Dan. Could you tell me which foil mat you used please? Do you think it could be used under the OEX Salamanda. The material on the bottom seems quite weak and I'm looking for a way to prevent something piercing the bottom. Thank you.
Hi Dan I’m going to walk the southdowns, way this year and wild camp it’s about 100 miles and should take 5/6 days how many gas bottles do you think I’ll need for a jet oil stove or something like it. ?? Hope you can help.
personally i dont think r5 is designed to be put down on snow on its own. i have the insulated v luxe sl which is 9cm thick and r6.5. i do have the one you have there as well and i wouldnt really try and test it on snow like that. theres 4 seasons use and theres putting it straight down on snow if you want my 2 pence worth.
I have 2 different mats that are R4.5 or higher: a Sea2Summit and an REI brand self-inflatable. Both have kept me warm down to 0C (where I live it doesn’t get much colder than that often), weren’t horribly expensive, and comfortable for a side sleeper.
Klymit are v misleading. The ASTM R Value (i.e. what matters) of this pad is 2.4 (hidden at bottom of text on website), so it is really a 2 season max pad.
I’ve seen a lot of bad reviews on these style of mats saying the R Value is hugely over exaggerated and I bet if you got inside it you’d find the amount and quality of insulation in there is more than likely worthless. Like you say probably a nice summer mat but not much else.
The R-values of all the Klymit sleeping pads have be drastically downgraded when measured using the new ASTM standards. I had a couple of them rated at R4.4 and R6.5 but now with the ASTM standard the R4.4 one is downgraded to R1.9. So almost no insulating ability. I've sold mine and gone with MEC Vectaire Insulated LT, Nemo Tensor V2 and the Thermarest NeoAir Xtherm. Much much better. I used the Memo on a mountaineering camp in the Canadian Rockies and was warm on the pad. Klymit has been very slow about documenting the R-values using the new standard. No wonder.
when it comes to mats for winter (the colder days) there is only one way to go (there is a reason every one is using it) it might be expensive but it works thermarest neoair xtherm and they just updated it for this year so it is even more comfy and its r rating has gone up í have the Big Agnes Rapide SL Insulated WL and the Nemo Tensor the insulated one i had the sea to summit black one dont remember its name but the warmest one they make still ended up using the xtherm again
Are those winter mats also usable in the summer? Or will it be too hot? I won't camp in the winter. Minimum will be ~5 degrees. I just want a very s comfortable mat.
I believe you may have a different result with a polyester filled sleeping bag .as the fibres don't compress as badly underneath you as feathers tend to . That pad does look poorly designed .I use a sea to summit insulated ether light mat and that works well down to about 0 degrees A lot also depends on how much air you have in the pad .if you like it soft then your bum will be closer to the ground . Good vid Dan.
The insulated Klymit mats have a really poor R value. Since the new ASTM standard was introduced the R value went from nearly 5 to under 2. They are a complete waste of time because heat just goes straight through the areas between the V where its just a single layer of material. You are better off buying them uninsulated versions as they are light for use in the summer and durable but even then I find the V air chambers really uncomfortable.
Is it possible if *ahem* the mat was less compressed when the person was lying on it and the sleeping bag less stretched, that it would work any better? 😏
Get what your saying Dan. Have you tried it on your OEX cot? Is it any better? Looks like a good air mat but as with any air mat, I'm guessing the more your off the the ground the better. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
@English Woodsman I'm looking to get the oex cot bed myself but hard to get hold of at the moment. Was wondering whether the klymit static was any better on the oex cot bed. Must say there is alot of welded seam surface area on it though
Hi Dan great channel. I don't often comment but here is my experience after 40 years of camping. In winter it's all about the sleeping mat. Sadly you get what you pay for I have had probably a dozen mats. In my opinion you need to be looking at mats like the xtherm there are others by Nemo sea2summit etc..these are all a small fortune but they work well. I have had my thermarest down to minus ten in a Bivi bag with a criterion 450. The issue is safety it's ok to camp local and if it goes wrong pack up and go home. On top of a mountain it's not always possible. I have in the past doubled up on pads and thermal fold up foam mat clipped together in a Bivi bag then slept on top of the bag. Issue is again ok to carry this lot in the car but it all starts weighing a ton in a backpack. I always use a layering approach to sleep systems. I found down blankets like the one from Alpkit are great to increase temp range of your kit. One final thing don't be fooled by ratings on sleeping bags and mats. Many use extreme rating to sell more check out Alpkit great price reliable honest kit. Take care Chris
It looks like those grooves are something that 'looked good in theory but doesn't work as well in practice. That reflective mat. Speaking under correction, it is supposed to work by reflecting 'radiant' heat (not conduction or convection) .. heat off your body back to you. This tells me that the closer it is to your body, the more effective it will be in keeping that body heat close to you. Being under the inflatable mat on the cold ground to me, seems to be counter-productive. Any heat coming off your body has to make its way through the inflatable mat and then what remains, must now be reflected back up through the mat onto your body. A task I presume, way beyond the physics thereof. Just saying ..
Don't know how many words mate...but Thermarest Xtherm max wide large says exactly etc. And don't worry about the crinkle nazis they've never had one 😀👍

It wont be anywhere near measurable. You could pour a whole cup of water inside a insulated pad and I bet you'd never feel a difference. If you get a real winter pad, you can blow into it all you want. I know, I've had one for years and been doing just that.

Too many grooves.
20 breaths it took you…..
I’m a smoker on 20 a day, I’d have to take it down the garage on the tyre inflator
I believe you're onto something. Those are great 3 season pads though.
I find mine quite warm, only been down to -4° in it.
I have 1 use with a wool blanket and no issues for me good review though.
Cheers Dan I got a oex on your recommendation months ago it brilliant youngen you have the same one cheers will
Hi William oex have a great mat it's the yellow one. That's OK for spring and summer
Hope you sort it pal 👍🏻👍🏻
ATB... Chris
Thankyou for watching
@@englishwoodsman No worries mate great video as always... love your channel pal 😊😊💯🤜🏻🤛🏻
Hi , I have a question.
Are those thermarest Alps usable in Warmer climate?
The lowest temperature I will encounter will be like 5+ degrees
Will it be to warm ? I am just looking for a comfortable mat. And I will combine it with a field bed .
I am surprised. Klymit are known to have over-estimated their R-value but my normal insulated static v has always kept me pretty warm. Out-lasted any of the other pads I have owned too.
I had high hope for this pad Sam. No matter what I do I can't keep warm using this
What's the coldest temps you used it down to, in Fahrenheit? It might keep you warm enough at 40F.
Likewise, not a bad word to say about my ins static V, happily use it year round.
@@northernimagesphotography What's "year round" in lowest temps? ASTM and mercury tells it all.
Got same mat in the orange and been good up to now to -5 last camp 2 weeks ago that's with a foil mate under and a snugpak osprey softy
Will you try putting the thermal mat on the air mat and see how that works out? Stay safe atb 👍🦊
That wouldn't do much. He could put a 2 R ASTM foam pad on top of it however, and that will greatly improve it.
👍👍👍
Companies can legally say any r value they like even if it's not true. Only the mats that have been ASTM tested have a true r value. This Klymit mat actually got astm tested but only got an r value of 1.5 or 2 !
I was always freezing cold on mine and when I found out why I sold it. It's a shame because it was very comfortable.
Seriously Dan, save your pennies and buy an Exped Down mat or Synthetic mat 9. You’ll be amazed at how warm and comfortable they are 👍
I've had a similar exprerience with Klymit pads.
I sleep on a silent night 10cm foam self inflating mat bit heavy to carry but far more comfortable
Thankyou 👍
I have the same mat and the same issues. Went out a brought a Thermarest mat instead, much better!
I am glad someone else as had this problem and commented about it. Thankyou darren
The mat is actually rated at 1.9 R value by the ASTM standard. Never had any issues with mine.
I don’t think that is the exact same mat
You need a solid foam pad like the army roll up or a fold up to go down too. More pads the better or just get a cot being off the ground is best.
Great value for money and highly recommended by me
Try using it at lower temps, zero degrees isnt really a test for a mat rated at 5
I have one but the r value is 2 its not an insulated one,but ive had no issues with it at all,i always use a foil under mat with it too,ive been down to only -1 but never had an issue, very happy with it
I might send my one back mate. I don't understand why we should have to buy something else to make it wotk
@@englishwoodsman agree, but habit with me,i always carry a foil mat, weighs nowt and rolls up small
I’m the same, had the ordinary Static V since 2019 and I go on the high peaks in the Lake District and I love it.
I was the same needed a winter system. Did not want to shell out £200. Then dropped on ECOTEK Hybern8 only £60. R value of 4.5. Not used it yet so will be interested to see how good. I currently have the UL80 but not insulated.
Could you not put a thin bead of expanding foam in the groves so it comes up level with the mattress? Just an idea!
Two ribbed mats stacked would eliminate the issue I reckon.
I wanted to like mine. My first one leaked. Got a warranty replacement and it leaks too. Needless to say, I’m pretty disappointed.
Great video again Dan very informative 👏
Hi Dan. Could you tell me which foil mat you used please?
Do you think it could be used under the OEX Salamanda. The material on the bottom seems quite weak and I'm looking for a way to prevent something piercing the bottom.
Thank you.
i want to go back to Ukraine soon and help all the cats and dogs, i go in my old 4x4. I need low priced..but good stuff to keep me warm at -15
👍👍👍👍
@@englishwoodsman wow i checked the link and saw the price... ouch. my max would have been about a 1/4 of that price.
@@MrEnglischjules I am trying to send it back
Hi Dan I’m going to walk the southdowns, way this year and wild camp it’s about 100 miles and should take 5/6 days how many gas bottles do you think I’ll need for a jet oil stove or something like it.
Use a Multimat Ice Mat 100 XXL instead for Winter sleeping comfort and warmth.
👍👍👍👍👍
Reflective sheets should be as close to the heat source (you) as possible.....not on the bottom.
thats what i use for sleeping on
Thanks Dan for going through all this for us. Looks like they have bit of bad press. So what you going to replace it with?
Hi Dan are you supposed to have your feet at the valve end and not your head, would that make a difference ,just asking pal
I bet if you cut that open there is no insulation in that material .
Good observation and proper scientific testing . .
I will just use it as a spring to summer mat
Klymit are v misleading. The ASTM R Value (i.e. what matters) of this pad is 2.4 (hidden at bottom of text on website), so it is really a 2 season max pad.
I am very disappointed
both on amazon
I’ve seen a lot of bad reviews on these style of mats saying the R Value is hugely over exaggerated and I bet if you got inside it you’d find the amount and quality of insulation in there is more than likely worthless. Like you say probably a nice summer mat but not much else.
Spring, summer early Autumn
That pad does look poorly designed .I use a sea to summit insulated ether light mat and that works well down to about 0 degrees
A lot also depends on how much air you have in the pad .if you like it soft then your bum will be closer to the ground .
Thankyou for watching
Thermarest extherm best pad ever
I will take a look 👀
Does anyone know why it won't completely deflate? And fit back in the bag. This is the second one. Junk!!!!!
I can fully agree its a right pain to put away
I struggle getting the cap to lock on after blowing it up. Any tips?
Have you tried the kilos pad
Is it possible if *ahem* the mat was less compressed when the person was lying on it and the sleeping bag less stretched, that it would work any better? 😏
Mate tried that's still no good
💜
Get what your saying Dan. Have you tried it on your OEX cot? Is it any better? Looks like a good air mat but as with any air mat, I'm guessing the more your off the the ground the better. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Love the oex cot bed mate used it a couple of times on the channel
@English Woodsman I'm looking to get the oex cot bed myself but hard to get hold of at the moment. Was wondering whether the klymit static was any better on the oex cot bed. Must say there is alot of welded seam surface area on it though
Problem lies with them not being ASTM tested or rated
it's the huge weld seam valleys.
👍👍
Air mats are freezing, comfy but freezing. I'm still trying to find the "perfect" mat
Xtherm..... thermarest. pricey but very effective.
Xtherm. Hey aren’t you meant to be in the other Dans comment section 😋

It's not really rated R5 - under the new standards it rates around R1.9. I own one myself - but would never use it for winter sleeping.

It wont be anywhere near measurable. You could pour a whole cup of water inside a insulated pad and I bet you'd never feel a difference. If you get a real winter pad, you can blow into it all you want. I know, I've had one for years and been doing just that.
Yep 👍
