Fan's demolition of Dima in the final lends greater value to the two sets Boll won here. And it's nostalgic and a little strange to see Boll turning into late Waldner: how can he extract points from someone who's younger, faster and more powerful than him? And he does it pretty well. The one thing I will say is, I'm not certain why, but his backhand topspin seems to have significantly more bite this year. Definitely in comparison with 3-4 years ago. When I thought most of his shots were powder-puff against the Chinese. I can't see any obvious change to his action, and he's always taken the ball early; I'm wondering if it's the new ball?
his backhand technique is different now, thanks to his backhand coach, subtle changes, watch the replays
Yeah in an interview he says the new ball really suits his style as he is more confident receiving difficult serves,handling the spin, and controlling the ball during rallies as the speed of the ball is less than the celluloid type.

Boll turning into Waldner?See Fan Zhedong's pivot at 2:29 squatting with the weight on his backfoot playing half baked shots with little torque ,zero sidespin whatsoever unable to give the ball any curving trajectory.Compare that to Ma Lin's devastating forehand pivot.
Boll would have to run around the backhand exposing his pivot technique which was really bad even in his 20's.
He's not getting any better,just the Chinese lost their specialities with the equipment changes.
Fan Zhedong is a counter puncher if you feed him slow loops and junk he messes up his timing and his footwork.You push him mid distance he starts the squat jump deformed sumo style like he did at 26:32 'cause despite pretending to be a power looper he ain't Wang Liqin or even Wang Hao from mid distance.
this was a really ood match with poor commentary, far too biased in favor of Timo, but I found it interesting that Timo played FZD better than Dima did, considering the new rankings. Also in this tournament, I saw more slow forehand topsins than I ever have, and surprisingly, most were effective too. I think it's clear to everyone, that Timo has a new backhand which is taking his usual opponents by surprise. Look at the last 2 shots against Ma Long in their last encounter where he won in a nail biting finish. For me, it's really inspiring that he can adjust his game at this late stage in his career. This gives bums like me some hope.
