Pro tip, no spoilers I promise: the game doesn't really advertise it very well, but there's a "quick cast" button for spells, R1 by default. It's better than tapping circle, because it fires the spell as soon as you press the button, whereas circle only fires the spell when you release the button.

Yeah, Sly is a sly one, isn't he? ;) I'm so glad finally seeing you play Hollow Knight, Oliver. It's one of my all time favorite games, right next to Outer Wilds, and the Legend of Zelda series!
The problem with Dark Souls is that it was so influential. that many people forgot there were games with interesting mechanics before it. Even Demons' Souls (the origin of many of the mechanics that define the Souls genre) was completely eclipsed by its spiritual sequel.
19:35 You might have already figured this out, but you activate NPC's (and benches and such) by pressing up or down on the d-pad/left stick. You're probably just pressing it slightly when walking.
You know, never thought too much about it and always assumed that it was a cassette tape, but I think it's just a business card with Cornifer's Glasses, like the sign above the shop door.
The "armadillo" bugs are woodlice (or, pillbug I think, in American), they curl up as a defence mechanism, they don't roll in real life either though. :D I feel like there's some framyness in these episodes, I suppose that's just because you're playing in 144 but the recording is in 60, it's not too bad though, just noticable here and there.
If you're using the d-pad you will be less likely to activate going into shops etc due to not pressing up think that's why because your using the sticks 🙃

Hi Oliver, I think you would love Playdead's Inside as a game for the future - it is a 2.5D puzzle game with a ton of mystery! Lots of theorising! Love the vids!
Hollow Knight is inspired by Dark Souls whether or not the developers or the fans want to admit it. Being inspired by other games is not an insult. Great composers were inspired by other composers. Great artists were inspired by other great artists. Hollow Knight is a metroidvania, people don't seem to have a problem admitting that, why can't they admit to it being a Souls-like also.
Wait, why weren't you able to mark the map? I'm positive you can mark it anytime, but it didn't show up. Maybe after buying the markers you need to sit on a bench one time. I'm just thinking out loud.
This is just a UI mechanic and not really a spoiler, so I guess it's okay to explain it here: you cannot place markers in the mini-map view, you have to go to the full map view in the inventory, but you don't have to be at a bench for that.
Might i recommend a game called rain world? Not necessarily for you to play on the channel although I would enjoy that, its just that I think you would enjoy it.
the developers have confirmed the only thing that is inspired from from software is the shadow version of you, which is inspired from bloodechos only being obtainable by killing enemies under certain scenarios in bloodborne. One could make the argument that hollow knight and dark souls have similarities, and I’m sure many have. But the fact remains that a kingdom that’s fallen to ruin, obtaining items to access previously inaccessible areas or items, a general sombre atmosphere and etc are not things dark souls invented, not by a long shot. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with drawing comparison between the two, even if doing it near constantly could theoretically get annoying. However insisting that hollow knight must take inspiration from dark souls is at least to me, varying amounts of close minded and plausibly even offensive depending on how you say it. To bring up an example, you said that the charm system Must be derived from dark souls, but it could just as easily be taken from the badge system of paper Mario series, or maybe a combination of both! Or, maybe something else entirely. Sorry for rambling, it’s just that I constantly hear people from the dark souls community talking about how hollow knight derives almost all of its ideas from dark souls exclusively to the point of those people even calling it a “soulslike” That is to say, i have grown to find comparisons between dark souls and hollow knight increasingly annoying, especially with how much it’s repeated, not that i mean to tell you to stop said comparisons, it’s just that if I didn’t say all this I might’ve gone nuts, I hope I said all of this in a clear and concise manner with not too much annoyance. And once again, sorry for the rambling.
