  • The Bibi Khanym mosque in Samarkand, Uzbekistan is the most famous and beautiful mosque in Central Asia and one of the most famous mosques in the world, attracting swarms of tourists every year. But...it has a dark history.
Uzbekistan (Oʻzbekiston) is a lovely ex-USSR country located in Central Asia. Its official language is Uzbek (although the majority of the population also speaks Russian).
Neighboring states: in the east - Kyrgyzstan; in the northeast, north and northwest - Kazakhstan; in the southwest and south - Turkmenistan; in the south - Afghanistan; and in the southeast - Tajikistan.

If you search around on google, you can find many good resources like Lonely Planet, Caravanistan, Journal of Nomads, and Atlas Obscura. However, many of them are outdated. For the most up to date Uzbekistan info...

That monster, Timur (he beheaded 70,000 Persian civilians in Isfahan alone, never mind what he did to the civilian Turks in Anatoliia), at least took notice of the positive fame and building great buildings being combined. So many nice bulidings (none spectacular, except the size: he was a megalomaniac).
