  • It seems the Volcano is making progress in the fight against Icelandic Infrastructure. Will they be able to protect Svartsengi ?
    THANK YOU so much for your support it is much appreciated and helps a lot !

    If you line up the new land rise line's lowest point with the 5th eruption's lowest point, the new rise appears to be slightly faster.
    Iceland is discovering the limits of wall-building, probably won't have much left they can do to prepare for #6 if it is anything like the last two... besides building a new power plant(s) elsewhere in case Svartsengi is lost.

    I don't think that using water to stop the lava is a good idea. We saw the explosions and toxic gases produced when lava reached groundwater in the first days of the current eruption. What if the explosions caused by this chemical reaction are strong enough to open a new fissure near the power plant and Blue Lagoon?

    The Icelanders just have to try anything that might work. I watched the drama on Vestmannaeyar over 50 years ago on TV. They managed to save the harbour and most of the town back then. It was just as big a drama then.
    It's not possible for anyone, scientist or not, to say exactly how things will progress going forward. They might just be lucky and the eruptions tapers off. That's their best bet. Then all their effort saved most of the infrastructure of the area. Had the authorities not done anything and it tapered off they would have been scolded for being irresponsible and blocked.
    However they may be unlucky ! But at least they tried...

  • @davenwin1973
    @davenwin1973 8 днів тому

    The Just Icelandic UA-cam channel just posted a drone video of how close the lava is to the power plant , and its scary. As much as they're fighting hard to keep suppressing the lava overall, i believe the best course would be to let it go to the sea with a man made route. Otherwise, I have a feeling that it'll just keep piling up, and eventually destroy the power plant, and there goes the Blue Lagoon with it. It may seem like just letting it go to the sea would be a bad idea. I believe if done correctly, it would be a better choice, and could add some additional land in the area. Hawaii doesn't bother fighting the lava, as they tried in the past, and it did not work there. Im not sure if Iceland being so far north, that colder temperatures slow down the lava, while Hawaii is much closer to the equator, and the lava stays hot longer. There shouldn't be any people in Grindavik right now, that the gases produced would not be an issue. Again, allowing a man made way to the sea would be my suggestion, even if it cuts off the road on the east side of Grindavik.

    I dont think they have a grip how much water it will take to stop the flow in the 70s they had an entire ocean to barely stop the flow. now they will have to truck water do the math they dont have that many trucks. they will have to supply at least 5 xs the volume of water to even begin to effect the flow. that is physicaly impossible and that is if it all evaporates but we know most of it will run off and be wasted effort anyhoo. mother frigg is in-charge here no arrogant human beings that think they are bigger than nature. please try id like to watch anyway. if this worked we would have used this tech in HI a few years back.

      I watched on TV many years back, where Hawaii tried to save a few buildings, and despite their efforts, the lava did not cool off at all, nor did it slow down. I'm thinking with Hawaii being closer to the equator, that lava doesn't cool off as easily. There are some areas from the 2018 eruption, that the old lava is very much still hot. With Iceland, I'm thinking the only reason the lava is cooling off a bit faster, has to do with being further north, and close enough to the Arctic Circle. Even then, it's not going to be enough.

      @@davenwin1973 the difference between 30degrees ad 90 degrees is not even sensible to lava its like telling the difference between 71 and 72 degrees F. to see the real difference you have to look at temps in K Lava 1200k air 272 - 310K 30f - 100f the forty degree diff Vs the 900 degree dif of the hot lava it cools just as fast in HI. as in iceland I dont even think its significant even though radiative heat is a power of 4. all basaltic lava is effused at approx the same temp. i dont usually work in F so i may have made a small error in my conversions. but i think this drives the point home. It take an ocean of water to stop the flow or glacier of ice.

    I'm confused at how the lava is moving--under the layer there (which I thought this was) or above the carpet layer? Because if the lava is moving underneath the carpet and therefore raising the lava carpet, then how will they stop the flow with water? And even if the lava is building and moving on top of the current lava carpet, I would think that they would want to stop it before the wall, because the lava will keep moving and pushing over the cooled off lava. Guess you can see why I'm confused.

    • @davenwin1973
      @davenwin1973 8 днів тому

      There are tubes being created from the hardened lava. This is the worst type of lava movement, because we don't always see it. This has happened in Hawaii, but I believe on a smaller scale, as I believe the constant heat keeps some of the lava in liquid form. In Iceland, I'm thinking the colder temperatures are turning the lava into rock faster, and also creating tubes, to insulate the lava, and allow for it to travel underneath the cooled rock. I'm thinking instead of fighting it, that a man made path along the east side of Grindavik would be best, and let it flow into the sea. If the lava enters the sea at ground level , the only thing it'll produce is poisonous gas. Now if the area was entering the sea from several feet or meters (depending on which measurement you use), and lava is entering the sea in liquid form (like what happened in Hawaii in late 2017 to early 2018), then it'll explode, as it's entering the sea at a fast pace.

    Isn't lava and water explosive and it's not a question of staying there for days it's for weeks. Aren't they giving the next lava flood a path to breach the wall? Perhaps they should get Tommy Lee Jones.
