The Guess Who, for certain. This is a good version but Burton Cumming's vocals and Randy Bachman's guitar really broke a lot of new ground when this first came out.
There is a priceless clip on UA-cam of lenny and the guess who doing their own versions of this song one after the other. The audience loved it! Lenny is a great rocker!
U rockin it about how I felt when I heard it!! 🥳 Love Burton Cummings smooth vocals with that 70's grit rock. 1st concert eva!! TGW gets my vote hands down!!👍🏽 But I will jam out harder to Lenny!! 😂🤣 Love em both!! 😁
Great cover, great reaction Ang! Guess Who still has the best version, however! Great story about the original on the YT channel called "Professor of Rock". The essence of the story is that the band created the song live on stage during a show, and were only able to recapture the magic and put it on vinyl because a fan in the audience was recording the concert illegally to create a bootleg, and they got a copy of what they had done from him!
Lenny does a fine job on the cover, really rocks out. To hear the definitive version of this song, try the live jam American Woman into Trucking Off Across the Sky from the Guess Who Live at the Paramount 1972 or so, it was a whole side of that album and is 21 minutes of some of the best live music you will ever hear. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶
Lenny is rockin' that ICONIC Gibson Flying V. I play guitar, I've never been a fan of the V. Im more of a Charvel So-Cal guy. But.. Lenny is hitting that V right! OMG....
I love both versions, but maybe the original a littler better. Guess Who’s version went to #1 on Billboard Hot 100 for 3 weeks. Lenny’s version peaked at 49.
its very rare that I like a remake as much as an original. This is one of those times. I think Kravitz honored the original.... it is a respectful remake.
Hard to recreate the mood of Burton Cummings and the Guess Who in 1970. First Lady Pat Nixon asked that the band not play the song when they performed at the White House in July, 1970, because of it's anti-war lyrics. Of course, that was the music of my youth, so my bias is toward the original version. The Nixon's also tried to create a stir when they asked Johnny Cash to play "Okie from Muskogee" and "Welfare Cadillac." Cash refused to play those songs because they weren't his. Instead, Cash played "What Is Truth," a song that you should react to.
Rarely do I like cover versions better than originals. I also like Lenny Kravitz. But, The Guess Who knocked this out of the park years ago. Lenny is a close second though.
On this one I think it's important to react to the original version by The Guess Who. Remember 1970 this song was a political statement and I don't think Lenny meant it that way.
There’s a Professor of Rock interview with Burton Cummings where Cummings says that he just started making lyrics up off of the top of his head on stage one night and any political intent was purely subconscious. The band had to track down and listen to a bootleg recording of it to even remember what they played or sang.
Lenny's version does not have the Vietnam war protest vibe. The woman in question is the Statue of Liberty. The Guess Who are canadians who don't want to be involved in the "American war."
One of the greatest songs of all time and I have both versions on original vinyl. It's hard to say which one is better. I recommend you play the original version next.
As far as covers of American Woman go, while I like this one and appreciate and enjoy Lenny Kravitz's unique take on the song, I think I prefer the 1982 cover from Krokus. It's a more faithful version where all the guitar parts, including the solos, are the same as on the original, but just much heavier, which I'm a sucker for. If anyone else here is the same, there's a playlist on my channel with a bunch of hard rock covers of older songs.
I like both versions! The Guess Who are a Canadian band with multiple hits in the late 1960's to early 1970's! Lenny Kravitz is obviously very talented, and he has a talented sister who is an actress named Zoe Kravitz! She was in The Divergent movie trilogy that started in 2014! It was meant to be a 4 parter series, but they stopped at 3 because it wasn't as successful as the studio thought it would be! Anyway, the Kravitz are a very multi talented family!
I don't know if you done this reaction yet, but the Red Hot Chili Peppers covered a Stevie Wonder song called, HIGHER GROUND from his album, Innervisions from 1973. Where Stevie made it a personal statement on hard timesof life in the city, the Chili Peppers simply rocked the life out of it. Your turn to choose. Enjoy.
I'm gonna be a major discent I honestly think the Kravitz version is better even than the original. I love both, but Kravitz is just electric in a way the Guess Who didn't express
Lenny does a good job, but I don't think it even comes close to beating the original, just the guitar work alone blows this Version away not to mention the vocals of Burton Cummings. Lenny's version does grow on you BUT in the end the original wins hands down.
The guess who wrote an anti war song rejecting the USA’s involvement. Lenny seems to have tweaked it a bit and featured a simpler message. Don’t get me wrong, Lenny is great but forced into a corner I will have to say the trade off with the message, I will have to stick with the Geuss Who.
I'm happy Lenny Kravitz did this cover, but the Guess Who's original version completely blows it away. Awesome anyway!
Lenny did a good job. He made it unique with his own style. But I agree, the Guess Who's version is better.
I am here to testify that there ain't no way Lenny's cover is better than the Guess Who original
Like Lenny, but this doesn't hold a candle to Guess Who's totally iconic song.
The Guess Who, for certain. This is a good version but Burton Cumming's vocals and Randy Bachman's guitar really broke a lot of new ground when this first came out.
Guess who. No contest
Lenny just got all that swagger, guy’s a total rock star.
I like the Guess Who , I was in high school when it came out. I'll tell ya as a 69 yr old I can honestly say Lenny is a great rocker , great cover.
Lenny made a valiant effort, but the Guess Who still owns it.
There is a priceless clip on UA-cam of lenny and the guess who doing their own versions of this song one after the other. The audience loved it! Lenny is a great rocker!
U rockin it about how I felt when I heard it!! 🥳

You've got to hear The Guess Who version

One of the best live albums of all time. Sensational stuff!

This is a great (best) cover but I’ll always like the Guess Who’s version the best
I prefer the Guess Who version but Kravitz’s is a harder rock interpretation that’s pretty good, too.
its very rare that I like a remake as much as an original.
This is one of those times. I think Kravitz honored the original.... it is a respectful remake.
This song was part of the soundtrack to "Auston Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me'. And notice Heather Graham (from the movie) making cameo's.
I like this, but prefer the guess who
American Woman done by the original band and live to boot. Check out [The Guess Who - All 14 minutes of "American Woman"]
I don't have a preference. I grew up with Lenny's version but I love the original as well. They both do it for me.
Exactly my thoughts ❤

I like this better then the original because of the instrumentals. Also he doesn't call the woman the B word which turned me off on the original.
Rarely do I like cover versions better than originals. I also like Lenny Kravitz. But, The Guess Who knocked this out of the park years ago. Lenny is a close second though.
nice one
I’ve always liked this version but the original is still superior IMHO.
Please react to Lenny’s song “Again”. It’s so pretty
Lenny Kravitz is a total badass! That said, the Guess Who version was a little badassier. 🤘🔥🤘

Anyway, the Kravitz are a very multi talented family!
Zoe Kravitz Is his daughter. Lenny was married to actress Lisa Bonet and they had Zoe. 🌻
Lenny was and is still sooooo sexy. I love this version better. 😍
Edit: PLEASE react to Lenny "Fly Away"
Well.... head many American women.... Heather Graham is the one wriggling around in the music video
Guess Who's original is much better, but love your reaction to the song.
Yeah, the original is a better version. The guitars are much harder and the beat really pounds. It's a much angrier song.
Enjoy.
Original
This was good but I prefer the original waaaaay more!
Like Lenny kravitz but Guess who is better to me!
Sorry Lenny, your version is good, but with Burton Cummings vocals and one of the greatest guitar rifts ever, the Guess Who versuon is a classic.
I'm gonna be a major discent I honestly think the Kravitz version is better even than the original. I love both, but Kravitz is just electric in a way the Guess Who didn't express

Lenny's version does grow on you BUT in the end the original wins hands down.
Good cover but The Guess Who versions wins!
The Guess Who did it better, now you know. Lenny's version was okay, but its not even in the same universe as the original.
Guess.who does it a bit better
Lenny did a good version but The Guess Who original is a lot better.
I like this version better than the original.
its the licorice stick you like.
Guess Who I choose. Come on, guess!
new coke or original?
The guess who wrote an anti war song rejecting the USA’s involvement.
Lenny seems to have tweaked it a bit and featured a simpler message.
Don’t get me wrong, Lenny is great but forced into a corner I will have to say the trade off with the message, I will have to stick with the Geuss Who.
Bad cover, sorry.
Funny song. Overly sexual.
