Most flights to Quito come from Houston and arrive at night (see my video 'Small Places to Stay') for a Quito hotel. To get to Vilcabamba, you have to fly Tame Airlines to Loja, then take an hour and a half taxi ride through the mountains.
What a breathtaking place to live. I have visited Ecuador, unfortunately, I did not visit Vilcabamba but I have done some research on it and it looks like a great place to live. As for other parts of Ecuador that I have visited from Quito to Esmereldas, Atacamis and all the towns inbetween I thought it was beautiful. The food was great, the people very nice, the music is great and again the people are humble and very friendly. Looking forward to visiting Ecuador ASAP.
I don't believe he rents any rooms, but I can recommend a great little hotel right on the edge of town called The Rendez-Vous. Lovely gardens, great breakfast included and it runs about $25/day.
I have been checking into a new life in Ecuador for over a year now. There are so many questions that need answering, but, at some point you do need to vacation there. Go there, and rent for awhile in a town where you might like to settle down. And continue to research, talk to people who have lived there awhile and get their perspective, they are a wealth of knowledge. I wish you all well in your search for your own little "Shangri-La". Cheers!
Hi Leah - I would say research, research, research! Also, I understand from locals that Vilcabamba has changed in the last few years - more crime - so be thorough in your investigation. Love Maui by the way..
@MACKATTACK1970 I'd like to visit again, soon, too. Was really impressed with some of the villages north of Quito - and of course, south in the mountains. Have never seen The Galapolos or the western beaches..
The only thing that ruins this perfect Adan garden view is the fence, meaning: stay away from me neighbors I claimed this property, not common in ecuadorian countryside, but very north american.

Keep me posted. I'm interested to hear how it goes..
@AngelNOLA I love the view he has..
@gfbn1998 I'd like to spend more time one day in Loja - and I have yet to visit Cuenca - but it's on the list!
I live in Kansas City currently and also dream of doing the same thing. Who wants to go?
Haha! I have lost touch with Patrick, but he sure loved living there!
@RobinBenzle My bad then. I guess those places started being norh-americanized long ago.

THE PERFECT RETIREMENT AWAY FROM THE CRAZZIES AND THE IRS
$975 per month in a place like that? HOLY CRAP! Around here, the rent alone would be at least $2000!
I know, right? That's why so many consider moving to South America..
@tvgirlnyc Thanks NY! It's quite a place!
Does Patrick have a rental room? I am working on a 9-I visa. aloha from big island.norm
@a1mint We could have used a telescope, especially with the abundant bird life!
I will for sure! :o)
Not that I've heard..
