He’s exactly right - focus on the total selling price! They’ll make it seem like you need to go through a lot of processes to arrive to a total selling price, but it’s something you have to ask for before writing down any information
An honest video, not someone trying to get you to go to their website and buy an ebook.
There is NO doubt that the 45 people who did not like this are ALL shyster salesmen/women! This is an EXCELLENT public service video! Thank you very much!!!
Why the fuck isn't this taught in school?
Jo Momma because schools produce sheep. they want you dumb. they don't want thinkers. how else will they steal your money
Jo Momma because we are the only country that does not teach our children our system of economics, the free enterprise system.
My kids are 15 and 17 and I am teaching them economics and finances!! Don't let the government dictated your life..
Why the fuck didn't your parents teach you? Why does school have to teach it? Why the fuck didn't you learn this ON YOUR OWN.
I used to sell cars. This is all good info. Except if you're dealing with a major dealership. The people at ford, chevy, toyota.... aren't the slick talking sharks they used to be. Major dealers worry so much about their online reviews that they'll fire a sales guy who gets enough bad reviews. Don't call the sales manager to set up an appointment with a sales person. If you call a sales manager do you think he's gonna set you up with a sales person who wants to get you what you want, get it done and move on, or his top selling guy who's trained to get you off selling price and onto monthly payments? Best way to find a sales guy is to ask your friends or people driving the car you want. Ask if they liked the person they bought from. He's so damn right, knowledge IS power. Know the invoice, know your option costs and don't go on that lot without knowing your credit score or if you have your own financing. Sales guys at major dealerships don't get paid unless they sell you a car, so they are busting their butts to find a way to put you in a new car. So don't be a dick to them. Also, don't waste their time. If you're six months away from buying don't waste their Saturday or Sunday time. Back when I sold, if I had a buyer that far out I'd give them all the time they wanted Monday through Friday. Hell I used to tell them to come in during lunch, we'd drive and I'd buy them lunch while we were out. Your sales person can be as cool to you will let him be. And if you do have a good relationship with that sales guy tell them to ease off on the follow up calls. You hate getting them and guess what? They hate leaving you voicemails every 3 days. And yes, you can get a better deal near the end of the month. Especially if the dealership is behind on their sales numbers. But that info is hard to find out. But yes, they do tend to make better deals at the end and sometimes at the start so they begin the month strong.
Great video. Know the total price. Know the interest rate. Know the options and equipment that come on your car. Don't ever bring up down payments or trade in's.
is this Andrew Dice Clays long lost brother? good video!
A most excellent video, presented in a honest manner. Great work, Sir.
This video is from 2012? It looks like it was recorded in the late 90's
wasterpop Not, most def in the 90s. He even says, go to the library and read the KBB book, lol. Great advise in the 90s and now too.
Which is why the mentality for car buying is so terribly out of date. We aren't in the 80's or 90's. Cars don't have huge markups. Dealerships cannot get away with being crooked anymore and expect to be successful.
LOL! When was the last time you tried to buy a car. They're just as crooked today as they ever were.
thats when it was UPLOADED. He says "go to the library, get a kbb. lol. thats free onlne now.
Great great video. Outstanding presentation and information.
This guy reminds me of a no BS straight talking Italian Consigliere.
Hi,i have been selling cars for more then 30 yrs and this is some of the best advise iv'e heard and these are some of the things that are used in the car business. The educated buyer is always the best buyer , DO YOUR HOMEWORK PLEASE.
Damn this guy is real. Haven't seen a video like this in ages where the person gets right to the point , no BS, just straight talk & useful info. Thanks for sharing
This guy is absolutely correct, used his tactics when I purchased my new vehicle and saved me a bunch. Like he says you are the boss not the dealer.
I've watched this at least a dozen times and learn something every time
This guy is right on the spot! He's an OG! Bet you he was a killer on the sales force :) Good work my bro!
I've seen a lot of videos this past week about dealers, scams, how to buy a car, and this guy's video is the best one by far
Everything I always suspected during car shopping at a dealership but now know. Thank you for a great video on this topic. 👍🏾
This man is so on point, love how he present the topic. Excellent, thank you!
Never, EVER.. finance through the dealer or let them run your credit.. get pre-approved by your bank BEFORE you get to the dealership.. the bank will give you a blank check and the amount you're approved for.. that way the dealership does not have to run your credit.. DO NOT LET THEM.
DO always secure your financing at your bank first...Never let them pull your credit before the deal...but if you have excellent credit and are buying NEW (which to me is typically not the best deal) you may be qualified for incentive financing of 0-2 percent and thats better than most banks can offer. So after youve gotten your deal do see if they can offer a more competitive rate.
But also check for any application fees or other loan fees from the dealer. They're still making money at 0% somewhere, you may actually come out better off in the long run paying a higher rate elsewhere.
+andie ette nothing wrong with dealer finance, only uneducated customers!
Why? What happens if they run your credit? I'm new to this & i'm in the process of buying a car & i just want to know as much as possible before making a deal.
Just when I was beginning to enjoy the video, it was over. Great information !! I wish everybody would learn the basics. DO NOT SHOW CURIOSITY. BE PATIENT. BE IN CONTROL. True !! Salesmen must hate this video. Great job, buddy !!
Great program I thought I was a savvy buyer, but I was a super mark. You should take your program on the road and teach others. People need to understand the entire buying process. Your NYC attitude ( if your an east coast guy) is spot-on. Thank you, and again consider doing more with it.
Regards from Marion Texas.
I like this presentation. Informative and presented in an entertaining way.
excellent video and he reminds me of Andrew Dice Clay little boy blue he needed a car ooooh
Usually I watch videos 0n a 1.25 speed but this guy don't need it. Fast assertive talker and NO dead time. great video. Thanks for the info.
This the best car advice video that I have a view. He is straight forward exactly what I would tell a customer
Thanks so much Joe. Well done. Love the Calculator-Vampire comment- and how true !!!! THANKS...
Joe, you rock. When I was looking to buy a new car (and I know a lot about cars as a woman) your tips were great having never bought a new car before.Your video was the most important tool I used! I did actually walk away from a deal, and never went back. Because I gave them a fake phone number, they couldn't call me! Keep up the good work.PS- A video on buying from small dealers would be great!
Great Video. I don't usually throw a like at videos but I will do it for this one. You are straight to the point and no extra BS that does not concern me.
Thank you so much for ALL of the GREAT and VALUABLE information.
I am a car salesman and I think this is a GREAT video. If a customer comes in well researched, it becomes a very easy process on both sides. The Internet is the best thing to ever happen to car-buying customers. From the perspective of the customer, even though you DO have the control in the process, if you do your research, then you will FEEL as though you have the control. From my perspective as a salesman, a well researched customer turns my job from a "sales" job into a "customer service" job and all I will be able to do my job well if I can just move the process along as smoothly as possible. None of that is possible for me without customers being well researched. A lot of the "rip off artistry" is a very old-school stereotype that stems from the days before the Internet.
yea a dealer here in arizona tried to pull 200+ dollars off of me per month and doubled my inequity. said fuck no and walked out the door, trynna pull that shit on me...
I used to sell cars too. I'd love more buyers who have put in at least an hour of research and have financing already.
A: it seriously speeds up the process
And B: finance guys these days will eat front end profit to get back end products sold. Sure we sales guys need them to get the deals done but most of the time we get no back end so screw them.
That's 7 years! There's no 15k car I want to drive for 7 years. Firstly I don't know anyone who would stretch a 15k car out to 7 years. Secondly if you're talking about a 7 year loan term then you must be working off payment not price of the car.
Sure it's 0% but the build quality of a 15k new car just won't be very good. 7 years from now you'll be making payments on a car you hate driving and is falling apart.
What an awesome video!! Everything he said has happened to me at one point or another when I was buying a car. It's hard to believe that they still pull this kinda crap!! The more people know about these tricks and deceptions that are being played on them the better they are able to out smart the crooks!!! Thanks for posting the video. Post more if you have them please !!!
Best video I’ve ever seen on buying a car. Thanks so much!
Badabing Bada boom ,Thanks for the inside.
One of the best videos, Thank you.
I was searching for this video everywhere. Thanks for making this video.
awesome video. just totalled my 2014 5.0 mustang yesterday. $15,900 in damage. i dont want to make the same mistake. and will not now that i seen this video to refresh my memory on buying a car. thank you!!
you should definetly be a financial advisor for people.
And make sue the final numbers are correct. Bought a car recently. Negotiated a good price and took delivery late in the day. Came back the next day to drop trade and finalize paperwork in a hurry. Big mistake. The dealer did a bait and switch with the numbers. We didn't realize until the first payment was due that they absorbed our down payment into other numbers and then tacked on a premium warranty (that we refused) and hid it in the paperwork. We ended up overpaying @ $3500 over the agreed upon total selling price. I will spend the rest of my days steering people away from that dealership.
A timeless, well-made presentation that’s super-informative and entertaining.
Guys like you are changing the world.. thanks for the video man!
thanx champ great video very helpful and informative
put the biggest amount of money down and then double up on payment. pay it off early. it is like paying yourself the interest. then take that former car payment and put it in savings - every month.
Yea but most places stick you with loans that you have to pay that amount no matter if you can pay it off next week
I love this guy! Pearls of conventional wisdom!
Many great points! To be clear: Financed Amount = Price + Delivery +Documentation + Garbage + Sales Tax + Registration - Trade In - Down Payment. (Use a calculator or even better, spreadsheet or software (that's why you learned Python).)
Garbage could be advertising, zip code adjustment fee, Additional Dealer Markup or it’s my birthday $1,200 bonus.
Note the first item is the Price of the car. Once you determine the interest rate and numbers of months (term) there in only one possible monthly payment. The dealer's "working with you" won't lower it a penny. A lower price lowers the monthly payment of the car. A higher Trade In lowers the monthly payment of the car. A larger down payment lowers the monthly payment of the car. Delivery, Documentation, Sales Tax and Registration, if honest, are what they are. Each item is important!
One point that may have been overlooked is - you have a better price advantage at the end of the month - both the sales rep and dealer need to hit their numbers -
Not really true. It can be the worst time to buy if they already hit those numbers. If my dealership has already met SFE, then not only is there no incentive to come down on price, we often start raising prices to make up for the deals where we lost our ass in the beginning of the month.
@@Toddalotapodamus Raising prices, eh? Now that's a totally ethical thing to do......perhaps you'd like to mention your dealer name?
@@joemarchand8313 if the increased price wasn't plastered all over online then *maybe* I would agree that it was unethical. A company can sell its own property at any price they wish. If people don't like it, they can buy elsewhere, and they probably will. The company will lose profits and have to adjust. That's how market competition works.
@@Toddalotapodamus Again....be transparent and cite the dealership...I'm sure that most won't want to conduct business under those terms.
@@joemarchand8313 I'm not being aloof. It's Hudiburg Chevrolet in OK. And *every single volume dealership* does business the same way. They basically have to. It isn't shady or unfair. They sell at very low prices for as long as it takes for the dealership to hit the number set by the manufacturer and then bring the prices up because there are no more benefits to keeping them low once they hit said number. If people choose to buy anyway instead of waiting for the next month, that's their prerogative.
fantastic advice thank you!
you summed it up in this video better than any other UA-cam video , thanks for the video I'm gonna use this advice in the next couple of months
I loooove this video, it is so simple, straightforward, and practical....I also like the title....u know what you are talking about & look like you were in the biz for years.....Big time THANKYOU!
He’s a very intelligent man, and I love the information! Thank you for telling us how to make a good deal and not get taken.
Now come help me with my purchase on a new Lexus...my 16 year old one is still good, I’m going down to a RX. 😁
So far the dealer has been a jerk, I feel it’s because I’m a woman. Luckily I know how to walk away. 👍🏼
Great advice,thanks
I LOVE this guy, Joe! Thanks a million!!!
great job, going to show this to my daughter whos shopping for a car. tks.
He is the best. Thanks
This guy is right, I wish i listed sooner. I bought a car a year back and I hate it. He pressured me real hard. Im buying another new car to get out of my current car and im using all these tools.
***** Im right there with you. Its terrible. But you learned, and the next time your will have all the tools.
I was a sales manager from 2017-2019. This video is still the most applicable video one with no knowledge could find even 25 years later. The epitome of most car dealerships sales processes right here lol. Still a broken industry and no surprise that dealerships make terrible margins on such big purchases nowadays.
Pretty good tips. I learned these tips from going to a couple of dealerships and not getting answers to my questions. When I got to the 3rd one I knew better what to ask and not be pushed into anything that I did not want to do. Still looking.
This man is amazing I’m not even gonna be buying a car soon but he makes me want to😂😂
You know this is old when he said “I hope your enjoying the DVD” Lmao
This guy was in the industry for a very long time, you can see the outrage of what happens to consumers when he used to be guilty of it too, more videos like this need to be made.
Hey just wanna say i really like your video, straightforward and spot on..i almost fell as one of the victim, luckily, i stood firm on my ground, grabbed my id and dig out of dealership. Subscribed!
An educated customer is the salesman's best friend. I wish everyone would bring a calculator. It is amazing how many people believe they can buy a $30,000 car with $500 down, on 48 months for $250.00 a month.
Dennis McBride , we have cell phones now. No need to bring calculators
Everyone should watch this video before buying a vehicle. excellent advice !
this is a great and informative video... I love this video. he is trying to get people to notice what to look out for and keep people from getting beat outta money
Please do another video on not getting screwed when leasing a new car. PLEEEEEEEEASE!
That video would be awesome too. From my own experience with leasing it always best practice to mention lease at the last resort even if your intent was to lease from the get go.You always want to give the impression that you here to buy the car ..That give you the clearance to negotiate the sticker price down close to invoice. One you find your target number and I reasonable monthly payment based on that number then you can get ask for lease option on that negotiated number.Whatever lease number they throw at you add it up with the RESIDUAL VALUE to make it falls in line with your agreed upon car price.
Friggin outstanding
Ha, remember that from US Coast Guard Basic Training... which is in Cape May of course
being a one time veteran in the industry; this is an excellent presentation of info.
I would only add, DEMAND your keys up front if there is a trade/ do not allow under any circumstances the dealership to hold them. 'Control.'
the keys in your pocket prove who has control. And yes, watch out for the 'distractions.'
great vid
The world need more people like you. Appreciated
Very impressive! I was able save a lot of money recently watching this video. I negotiated the total selling price and finally the dealer sold it for 33% below msrp!
My family has 2 car dealerships and an RV dealership. I sold cars in a major US city and a fairly small city as well. The man speaks the truth.
Every morning we had a sales meeting where the main subject was over coming objections.
The manager would ask if any new objections (to buying a car, then) had been encountered.
ALL possible objections which a customer can come up with has already been prepared for by the salesmen. The large dealership spent big money to send it's salesmen to special seminars which dealt with all the ways to present the deal, overcome any objections you can think of and take control of the deal. They PREACH contouring the deal.
Salesmen (that includes women) and managers know thatv75% of the people who come to a dealership and test drive a car will buy within 24hrs of leaving that dealership. So, they want you to buy TODAY.
If they tell you that, presuming they haven't sold the car you want in the mean time, you can't come back in 24, 48, 72hrs and get the car for the same price you finally agree upon, that it's only good while you're heating a set, get up, walk away and go find another dealership.
The "four square" sheet he shows is a tool they use to get you onto the payment and off the total number.
Stick to your guns, stay calm and happy hunting.
Great job Joe, I love the video, it is well done and very informative. Anytime I have to deal with car sales personnel, I feel very defensive and act accordingly. You reinforce my anticipation. You should also do one on buying a car for cash.
Excellent video, straightforward and correct in all regards.
thanks for this video....too late for me ....
Can I hire you to do negotiations for me? thanks! LOL
I had to smile when you posted help in negotiations, a friend of mine asked me the same thing. I told him this: Your NEW car is NOT your baby, or whatever emotional attachment and/or excitement your feel. It is a big POS (use your imagination) that is expensive to own and insure while still leaving you stranded at least once in a while, and at 100k miles will take a giant crap and will be worth little more than scrap. Now walk into that dealership and make them pay for the first year depreciation (typically 15%) right off the TOP. Watch this video as many times as you need to buy right, it's just about all there.
Fantastic video. No bullshit, great information and right to the point.
Should have saw this video before my purchase. Very nice points. Great video. Very informative.
this info is golden .
it's all true.
This video should be watched EVERY time you want to buy a car...download the video and upload it offline to your phone and watch it entirely just before even thinking walking into the car showroom and make a list and bring it out printed with you. That will save you real cash!!
Thank you Joe. Great and valuable common sense video.
You do realize that true car quotes 500 back on invoice and most auto credit groups are beating banks by 3 or 4 percent
And dealership get there finance thru actual bank which included credit unions lol.
Financing cars is the stupidest thing someone can do. I make over 140k a year and drive a car worth 1200. Why? Because instead of paying a bank thousands of dollars in my earned money, I invest it in something that makes me more money. Sure the guy in the nice shinny new 60 thousand dollar lexus laughs at me l, but i laugh back because hes in debt.
Sounds like me. I still drive the same truck I drove in high school 15 years ago. All the people I went to high school with make fun of me for this but none of them have as nice of house as me, let alone a house that doesn't require private mortgage insurance payments because I could actually afford a 20% down payment.
bullitt5337 Why don't you pay cash for you brand new car instead of driving crap you make so much money it shouldn't be a problem for you.
Awesome video. Still awesome in 2020. Thank you!
So this is what Andrew Dice Clay has been up to... Great vid!
Oh!!! and by the way, I just noticed, 67 people DID NOT agree with this video, believe me they have to be a shifty car salesman themselves, or maybe their DADDY, MOMMY, or some other relative are these people, that the video speaks of. There is no other reason out there that is possible. If people do not take heed of what you heard, you could be paying for your first car, rolled into all of your future cars until you get gray hair, when you do not get enough for your trade, and it is added in to the new car loan, thats exactly what I am saying With saying all I have, now, in 2014, I got the best deal ever, going in with the knowledge that I now have, along with a great respect at the dealership, and now, they will now, always have my business, and I went in there so prepared, you would think I was buying a mansion.
It is great to educate your self . No need to belittle hard working salespeople that spend more time at work away from their kids and miss school plays and sports events so they can help you.
Wow. I love this vid! Great job. I am buying very soon. Will definitely use your strategies.
Priceless advice, not just for now but a lifetime.
Question: How do you know when a car dealer is lying? Answer: When his lips are moving...
Thanks man, i swear these guys are like wolves, i hate the hassle of it all, the pressure, i wish they could read me better. LEAVE ME ALONE till i ask you a queston. all i want to do is test drive... Thats it thanks.
OMG talk to a salesman when going to a car lot. Go rent one for a day if you don't want the "hassle". What a pussey
Then find a time when the dealership is closed to go run around on the lot like a moron with nobody there to help you answer your questions if you don't want to be bothered. Idiot.
Part of the job, Salesman is trying to be your "friend" until you purchase the car.
I hate when you pull up they pounce on you immediately. Literally 4 steps out of your car. I hate that. Let me have a breath. Let me walk the lot a little and look at the cars.
@@Rob-dp3vr Exactly! I hate when i was looking for the right car and they try and convince you to downgrade and go with their suggestions smh
This is the best video on this topic I've ever seen
Excellent and very good video.Thanks.
I say ALWAYS get a loan from your bank and then go to the dealership. Don't tell them you did this though until the very end, your giving the middle finger to the financial department
Sounds like I hit a sensitive spot. That must mean that I'm right and you WANT people to go through the dealer so they can get more money.
I love how people perceive car salesman as liars, but were some of the most honest people you'll ever meet. If you listen closely to this video...the customer is making up lies left and right, the only way to get out of your situation if to lie to us. Yes we like for you to buy today, and all of that stuff, but never have i pressured a customer on anything, if you don't like the car, I'll tell you not to buy it, lets go look at another model. Car buying could be really simple but people think that we car salesman have a secret knowledge that nobody else has...were only human, and the process could be very easy, people just make in incredibly hard by coming up with all of these rules. lol.
The honest ones are certainly a minority. He's not saying lie. He's saying don't divulge the truth if you don't have to. He's saying do your research because the salesman is making more money from your ignorance. I've had a dealer ask to borrow my card so he could "show it to his boss as a gesture that I'm serious about the purchase" and somehow cut me a better deal. If that's not bullshit, I don't know what is.
I take your point and his that the customer has this preconceived notion that the salesman is going to take him to the cleaners. At the end of the day it's the guy that the salesman goes to speak to or the finance guy that are the silent but deadly guys.
The reputation for the salesman is not unwarranted however and there are several salespeople that would sell their granny. I think if somebody came to me and had not got a clue about something that is clearly very important, i.e the purchase of a vehicle, I would not go to town on them... That's just me.
I've dealt with some dealers recently and most of what this guy said is true. However, I did come across some nice ones too who didn't try to deceive me too much. Sadly, those were in minority.
You're really good man, enjoyed your video. Thanks for posting.
Thank you for this.. I realize i was doing the right things not to get screwed. Many of these dealer tactics i noticed first hand in 2018. Yap still being used. Lol
" a calculator is the same thing that a crucifix is to a vampire " lol
Yes, I chuckled at that too. However, in reality, I (as a sales professional and entrepreneur) would much prefer everyone understand basic math and use calculators as necessary. There is not much more annoying than dealing with a mathematical moron arguing with you over why their $40,000 purchase can't be done for 60 months at $350 a month with no money down. It would be humorous, if not so sad, when they say something like, "If you can get my payment to $300 a month, I'll buy!" after telling me they can't possible come up with any money down...
I can't speak for every sales professional, but the ones I know all think like me - we wish more consumers were better educated - it would make our job much easier and less aggravating.
I loved that part too lol
