I'm on my third playthrough, back to back. Still finding new things. If this doesn't get a perfect score, its because nothing does.
This game is a 20/10. Those are my thoughts
I have been thinking about it, after almost 2 full playthrough on Tactician (180 hours), I think BG3 really IS the best RPG of all time. A lofty title but really in my opinion, there hasnt been anything better in terms of real RPGs since Dragon Age Origins and Knights of the Old Republic 1, and BG3 pretty much goes the same vain in my eyes, only so much better and more refined.

I'm 52 hours in and not even in act 2. BG3 is a breath of fresh air in a stagnated bog that is current day gaming. And I'm not really a fan of party based RPG's. I almost had an existential crisis wondering if I liked video games as much as I used to. But with elden ring, TOTK and BG3, to name a few, It isn't me. The Hag's bog in act 1 is a real good metaphor for this day and age of video games. Either you can see how bad its become, or find out eventually that theres an old hag taking your money with promises and illusions of something great.
Act 1 was the longest, act 2 was a little bit shorter, and act 3 was the shortest. (For pretty obvious reasons, once you get there.)
My playthrough took about 180 hours, but I did everything in every area and completed all the companion questlines.
There are a few qualities of Baldurs Gate 3, that really makes it stand out as one if not the best RPG for me:
- The way the world, NPCs and companions react to your decisions and just many different and nuanced consequences both good and bad your choices can have.
- The perfect blend of environmental, written and spoken/acted storytelling. One of the most impressive feats in my eyes is when the storytelling is done through the environment, texts like books and diaries as well as cinematic cutscenes and it all comes together harmoniously. The cinematric intro of BG3 throughs you into the middle of the story, and during the game the story gets fleshed out while out teasing itself for further developments. For example, one of the major villians gets introduced through notes and diaries and orders before you met him. So when you finally do, the reveal is all the better, because you already imagined him. This game fires up your imagination and then fills the gaps in suitable dramatic or interesting fashion!
-The leveling system, classes and abilities are done exceptionally well. Loot is often a choice rather than a flat upgrade to your already owned equipment, and its about building your character rather than just increasing the stats and damage numbers. Tons of spells and abilities offer interesting mechanics rather than just more damage, I am sick and tired of games that call themselves RPGs but all you do is increase your health and damage against enemies that get spongier.
With regard to "what next" I feel like there's a sort of obvious answer: Expansions. With nearly 200 hours into the game, it might seem a bit weird to say "I wish there was more" but I think that just speaks to the quality of what they have created. I don't want to wait another 6 years for Baldur's Gate 4, and since I LIKE what we've got now, I'm not really itching to jump on something totally different. But no matter how good the game is, no matter how many different paths you can take, you can only play it so many times before things start to be monotonous. As great as it is to experience alternate versions of the story, most versions still contain a lot of the same elements that you will be watch/fighting through over again. So... more content. There are a few NPCs for whom their stories don't really conclude completely - we could easily have quite a bit of additional content with many of them.
I just found this channel and this video, and I agree with EVERYTHING you just said. I play on PS5. My 1st Play through was little over 200 hours. That is how long it took me to learn how to properly play the game, for me. So now I'm 60 hours in to a play through that I plan on actually finishing. Last time I stopped just after the circus but before the drawbridge. It's been 30 years since I played D&D. And this is "basically" how I remember dungeon and dragons. A fantastic game, a great video and, yes I liked and subscribed. Thank you.

I think God Howard has been dethroned by God Vinke. I remember stating that this game was gonna be a amazing game back in early access. I am still not surprised, I am happy that you have finally shown light (x2) on this game. I am glad you played it, if anyone has seen the panel of hells understand how much care and attention to detail this dev company puts into its work. They put player fun and re-playability over emptying your wallet. Cant go wrong with DM Master Matt Mercer voicing Minsc either, Now you just gotta get Jeff to play a bard in DND with you on a podcast form. I would def log in for that. Now I gotta get back to talking to the artist after his wedding. Thanks for your input Nova. Still wish you shed as much light on this as star citizen lol
This years been such a year for gaming. Glad to hear some thoughts from Adam on Baldur's Gate 3
This year for gaming has been a good year if not the best in a while. Some bangers of Resident evil 4, ff16, tears of the mid, diabolo snore and bg3. I think bg3 needs to be used as a case study to prove its possible to create a fantastic game still and we need to see leveling up from other companies who have such a bigger bag of wealth then larin. The fact that diablo 4 was made and published by arguably the richest publisher/devlopers and it lost its honey moon in a couple of weeks, just proves that gaming has been broken for a bit.
Tears of the mid 😭. It's so good, though.

I've heard some really interesting/funny/etc things from random one line NPCs, delivered exceptionally, and I cant remember the last time a game paid that much detail to.. well, the little details
a random guard at the bank was like "slow day, eh? might as well stash your cash under your mattress"
and idk if it was the delivery or what but it was so fuckin unexpectedly funny to me

just so refreshing to have a top tier game that isnt leaving out its own content to monetise me.
I love games like Cyberpunk 2077, Dragonage Inquisition, The Witcher, etc. I was a bit hesitant about BG3, but the reviews made it tempting. It is one of the best games ever. I'm 160 hrs into my first playthrough and the crazy amount of choice have me eager for my second playthrough (and 3rd?). I suggest for players unfamiliar with the game to check out Fextralifes BG3 wiki and some podcasts on fighting, races and classes. You don't need to know everything, so don't try, but each one is a foray into: wow, you can do that?!?
I've played it. And then i've played it some more. Then i played it a lot more. Now im sitting at 540hrs played and i haven't even done my dark urge evil playtrough. LOL So basically i've played to the point where i can't even give it a score anymore, coz i've become too biased. With that being said, if this isn't gonna be GOTY, i won't even know what went wrong. And where. This is a masterpiece, and it will stay with us forewer as an icon.

I've noticed BG3 can be a little over whelming to a beginner in this genre of these games. I love the story so far and it's put together very well. To me it's a 8 out of 10. I believe Nova is giving a honest review on this game. I'm glad this game is doing better than the AAA developers and rethinking their business models..

It's all on my Twitch channel! There's no universe in which I have the time to edit 150 hours of gameplay and upload it sensibly to UA-cam (like 100 or more 1 hour videos? Lol).
I know Twitchs video player isn't ideal for people but yeah.
I did multiple 15 hour streams during my playthrough. UA-cam live doesn't even let you go past 12 in one session without restarting.
Including early access, I just broke 1,000 hours in BG3 and will likely break 2,000 hours before I am done. Need I say more?

Let's just put it this way, Baldur's Gate 3 is the first game ever where I've beaten it, and wanted to immediately start over and play it again. Which I did, 3 more times. Also, scratch all of this, BG3 is the third game that did this, Chrono Trigger was the first, but if you've played Chrono Trigger, you know why, and it's kind of cheating what it does.
one of the best games i have played. whats more is how the devs genuinely love their game and built it with care. so refreshing

Arguably the game of the generation, but trading blows with Elden Ring (which is not for me - but recognize its importance). Always find it difficult to draw comparisons with Nintendo as they sit outside the PC/Xbox/Playstation space in their own market.
quality content from a quality man
9.75 out of 10 _imo._ As for reviews...whelp it got review bombed and the fan score is still 8.9/fans on Metacritic and 9.6 on OpenCritic. After being smashed with over 100 0-4's. The pro reviewers, man I feel bad for them. This game is like 3 weeks' worth of work minimum to give a solid review of, say 70% of the content in the game. That's working 10 hour days, 7 days a week. I have a feeling they aren't getting paid for 185 hours worth of work, 60 of which would be overtime. So yeah, I can see why a lot of them just rand the main story to the end of Act 2 and quit. Lol, or never left Act 1 after putting in 100 hours for that matter.
I'm on my second 200+ hour playthrough and didn't finish the first one. I was just max level to long and got a bit annoyed. This time I didn't have ti read all the books and notes so I won't be spending 150+ hours without any character progression. Keep in mind, this won't happen to many people as I'm way, way to thorough.
I know long games aren't for everyone, but you coys probably wrap it up in 70 hours if you just did main quests along with your favorite companions' adventures. Or, you can play it like a 3 game boxed set and just have a marathon 200+ hour go at it.
The game is fantastic, and the voice acting along with the writing is just top notch. Like Mark Hammel and Will Freidle in their best performancez top notch. Even the UA-camrs they used did exceptional. There are *ZERO* throw-away performances in this game. No random Skyrim or Cyberpunk 2077 _bleh_ NPC's on the streets or anywhere else. Heh, and there are mire NPC's which is just nuts. Hats off to Larian for making the best game I have played in a decade or so as well.
I can't watch this because I don't want to be spoiled for a game I can't wait to buy (I'm a sad Xbox peasant), but I'll let the video play in the background on silent in support.

The game is not perfect. A lot of inconsistencies and bug in the later acts. Nevertheless, the game is a 10/10 in my book.
I swear, if this game doesn't win game of the year, I'll blow myself up.

I do say 10/9 but only because the game is to easy. Mybe later they will patch it but rigth now the game is easy. And thats makes a problem with replay ability.
not feeling this game... i was hooked for 20 hours..then the frustrations set in.... looting boxes constantly... fucking traps areas... jumping sucks when you try to get all your party to jump with you and not go back to where they were.... I prefer FROMSOFTWARE's gameplay and mechanics over this.. I have LOVED CRPGs.. Fallout 1, Fallout 2, Neverwinter Nights, KOTOR 1 and 2... all the jrpgs from the 90s.. but it all jsut becomes meaningless with this game because the scope is actually too large..too many sidequests.. i don't give a fuck about characters I will only be interacting with for a sidequest. might as well kill them... even

I mean your criticisms are valid, I especially feel the point about your party when you go to jump. It's infuriating to me even though it only takes a second to unlink said stuck party member and momentarily control them, but it's annoying nonetheless. My other (and really only) issue is inventory management, it's super tedious. Traps are annoying at times but are largely a non factor for me. I don't really understand saying you prefer FROMSOFTs games though? They aren't even remotely similar, not much, if at all by way of comparison there. They are great games though. Just started getting into them.
As for the point about side quests I mean if you don't want to do them either keep them in your journal and follow the main story line or.. do just as you said and kill them since you can kill anyone at any time.
