Truly an underrated band. I've loved listening to the Canned Heat since I first heard them in the late '60s. I had the pleasure of seeing them live in concert at the Dallas Memorial Auditorium while they were ALL still alive. Living in Dallas I had the chance to see most of the bands of the '60s and early '70s.
Saw the band at the Bath Blues Festival held at Shepton Mallet , Somerset, England in 1970. I vaguely recall them coming onto the stage at around 7am in the morning. I can't remember what day that was though. They were an instant hit with the the crowd. What a great band to wake up to ! Now in July 2020 , near 50 years have passed by since Al's death. May his music always find new ears to listen to what he and his band mates had created when they were Together.

Alan "Blind Owl" Wilson was the man, incredible feeling through his voice, Bob "The Bear" Hite destroying the harmonica, Henry "Sunflower" Vestine making the guitar crawl and Larry "The Mole" Taylor kicking the bass. Wilson, who had always suffered from depression, was said by some to have attempted suicide by driving his van off the road near Hite's home in Topanga Canyon. Unlike other members of the band, Wilson did not have much success with women and was deeply upset and frustrated by this. His depression also worsened over time. On September 3, 1970, just before leaving for a festival in Berlin, the band learned of Wilson's death by barbiturate overdose; his body was found on a hillside behind Hite's home. De la Parra and other members of the band believed that his death was a suicide. Wilson died at the age of 27, just weeks before Jimi Hendrix, and then Janis Joplin, died at the same age. On April 5, 1981, having collapsed from a heroin overdose during a show at the Palomino in Los Angeles, Bob Hite was later found dead in de la Parra's Mar Vista home at the age of 38. On October 20, 1997, a tired and cancer stricken Vestine died in Paris, France following the final gig of a European tour. On August 19, 2019 Taylor died after a twelve-year battle with cancer. They were the incredible Canned Heat...
Alan played harp with the Heat until his passing; then Bob did. Bob may have done a little while Alan was with the band; but it was mainly Alan. He was one of the best harp players who ever lived.
@@andrewmair7371 That's right. On this studio version it would be Blind Owl. He also played that hurdy gurdy or what ever that drone thing goin on is. Been a while since I read the book. Can't remember exactly what instrument it was but it was his idea and he played it.

When John Lee Hooker Praises Your Harmonica and Guitar Skills What More Needs to Be Said About The GREAT ALAN BLIND OWL WILSON ?? NOT a DAMN THING BUT MISSED !!
my god, a voice that will never be approahed by anyone. I'm thinking of screamers like Springstein, he's not really a singer by comparison. I.m a life long hillbilly so came to Canned Heat late in life. My mistake, I miss a guy I never knew about until he was gone. mthis music late.
Al had such a unique voice and vocal style. Every time I hear them I get pissed because he didn't make it. The potential for really great music was so strong .x

So what? Canned Heat revolved around the genius Wilson. He was a great harmonica player and excellent guitar player.Plus he was creative and insightful when it came to composition. In this song for example, Wilson came up with the tempura idea which gives the song a mystical Eastern flavor.Canned Heat never accomplished anything significant after his death.Unfortunately Al had deep emotional and depression problems.Led to his suicide. But he had great talent.
