    Thank you so much for bringing back the camera angle that allows us to see you in the driver seat from the outside. You are the only one who consistently shows it and it really helps!

    Drove this vehicle yesterday.Very powerful.I was going 80 in a blink.Relatively quiet .Did not floor it much because the power came on smooth.Steering is not as good as an Acura MDX but ok.Rides firm,though the car I drove had 20 inch rims.Seat could use a little more padding.Overall though,the vehicle had character which is hard to find.I kinda liked it.Crash scores not in yet.Will test drive again.Looks great,feels solid

    I can't wait for the battle royale between the Qx50 and the new Acura RDX. I have a feeling these are going to be a huge sales success for both Infiniti and Acura.
    And for those bemoaning the CVT FWD based 4 cylinder move, I get it. I drove the older Qx50 and it was a tall performance hatch based on the Q50. BUT this car is not for us, it is for the suburban families and this meets their needs perfectly.

      Alejandro Pinzon what about the hood? Does it bother you because you can see the hood . The xc60 you sit inside and see the hood too. Feels like I’m in a bus. I don’t like seeing the hood when I drive. I wonder if I will get used to it because there’s great deals on the qx50 this month.

    Disappointing that the ProPilot system is available only on the top trim series. Many [lesser priced] brands are making their safety features available or standard on all trim levels.

    Hard to find honest reviews. Thanks for that. I saw reviews on other models you listed in this segment and the things u said to choose infiniti for in this video, are in the others. Again, thanks for being consistently honest. Sometimes brutal and i don't always like what you say, but we're here for your input, not to give you ours. Keep makin great vids, and I'll keep watching.

    Excellent in-depth review, Alex. As always. Informative, unbiased, and comparative. As far as all encompassing car reviews are concerned, you are still the king. Excitement and personality is a little lacking, but content makes up for it. Keep up the good work!

    Gorgeous exterior and interior. I just got the majestic white 2020 QX50 Sensory FWD with Apple Car play and Android Auto and the interior finish is top notch. The CVT will take some getting use to specially coming from my previous car (2017 Q60 Red Sport), acceleration is slower in QX50 but has a smooth and quieter ride which I preferred to Q60 Red Sport stiffer ride. I'm not doing spirited driving, racing or taking this car to the track or bombing in the canyon road. I got this car because of the good deal I got from Infiniti with huge discount and incentives. The safety features of this car is really good and it drive itself and the looks. Infotainment looks dated, and not stopping my decision to get this car.

    Hmm I think many people were hoping to see the 30 MPG combined rating but thats still a notable improvement,
    Sad to see the inclusion of a CVT and them stepping away from RWD layout.
    At the very least I would have much preferred Infiniti offer a new traditional automatic or dual clutch.

    It's as if they took a muscle car, gutted it, and turned it into another 4 cyl. turbo FWD hatchback/crossover. Well If Nissan wasn't going to make the ride comfortable, they should have offered the tasty VQ V6 engine, which has been sized from 2.0L to 4.0L. It's a fantastic engine folks.

  • @TimJoseph08031990

    Infiniti went backwards by putting FWD and CVT in the 2019 QX50. I don't mind the engine though, but this should have been RWD biased with a regular automatic transmission. Most automakers put more gears in the transmission but made transmissions much smoother and more fuel efficent.

    Appreciate the thorough review Alex! One of my favorite vehicles was the 2006 Infiniti FX35 that I leased for 3-yrs. They completely lost me with transversely mounted engines with CVTs. To me they're becoming Nissans with luxo interiors. My current lease is up in March, and it looks like I'll be going with a Q5 or an F-PACE.

    A variable compression engine woul be the best choice to apply flex fuel technology. A VC could use gas from any part of the world or a blend of gas and alcohol without serious technical adaptation. Seems to be a bold move from Nissan/Renault.

    This could have been a contender for my SUV money but I went with the CX-9. Way better value, better transmission and better driving experience. Everyone beat up Mazda for putting a turbo 4 in the CX-9 and look at many going the same way with a 4 banger. They make them better now. No it will not sound as pure as a V6 but the 310 lbs of torque that the CX-9 puts out at low rpms is no joke. It works..

    • @LouAntonioGiordano
      @LouAntonioGiordano 6 років тому +1

      You can stay in business by being competitive or you can stay in 2005 and go out of business. This is the trend now and no one really cares about FWD or RWD anymore. It’s all about space and gas mileage. Both of which RWD does not excel at. People like you are a niche market. The profit at niche market is way lower than mass market. It doesn’t make sense to make a rwd compact SUV anymore.
      If you want rwd go buy a sedan or coupe. Because most SUV buyers never consider that. And people who want sporty vehicles don’t really want compact SUV.
      That was not a wrong move by Infiniti. In fact it was a fairly reasonable one.
      In X3 and GLC’s case both of those companies simply wanted to keep cost lower by using existing platforms to make their SUV’s. Unlike Infiniti they are strong global companies. Therefore, they do not mainly focus on the North America market. After all there are way more people around the world buying their cars so there’s no reason catering to us. But Infiniti’s strongest market is North America so they have to cater to North American consumer needs.

    This was a great comprehensive review of it. I want to tell Infiniti that coming from a QX70, I'm extremely disappointed. My sales person assured me this was better, after 4 Infinitis, I feel sad. I got thos 2019 QX50 and I feel Infiniti went cheaper on EVERYTHING. Dont get me wrong, I like a lot of features, like the spacier middle caddy, its does feel fast, but thats after a huge delay where it felt like a cow, til it went to a cow with a rocket that fired up late. It feels puny, sounds like a Sentra, and No Android compatibility? Jesus were in 2020 almost wth? The cosmetic lines of the car are pleasing, I dont have the perforated seats, so the ones I have feel like old grandma plastic covering the fine dining room chairs. My butt and back sweat a lot. They ate comfortable tho, I just sweat. It was a $5000 for better seats. I like this car, but it's no match to the qx70. I get it tho, infinity went cheaper to appeal to an larger crowd and make more mmoney. That makes me sad, and I'm wanting to find a new Make now, after 12 years of being a die hard infiniti person. Sigh 😕

  • @corystansbury
    @corystansbury 6 років тому +1

    Modifying squish characteristics greatly increased detonation potential. So during heavy load, this engine will either need more fuel enrichment, or a lower compression ratio when compared to another 2.0 liter turbo. I don't expect real world mileage to really be worth the complexity. There is a reason why most aim to shift dynamic compression ratio with cam timing vs. mechanical changes.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  6 років тому +1

      In theory if you can mechanically vary the compression ratio you get lower pumping losses at low speeds vs simply delaying intake valve closure. Although, it is worth noting that this engine employs both high compression and stratefied injection *and* delayed valve closure to increase efficiency. The delayed valve closure is to make the effective expansion cycle longer than the effective compression cycle however, not to reduce compression as it is used in some engines

    • @corystansbury
      @corystansbury 6 років тому +1

      Alex on Autos Delayed valve closure is not typically used to change dynamic compression ratio. That is done with lift and/or overlap typically. Valve closures, as you mention, are used to employ pseudo Atkinson cycles. Modifying mechanical compression ratio certainly has benefits over purely cam-based solutions, but also has significant disadvantages. There is a reason why Saab tried to tilt the head, maintaining a squish pad. This is a lot of complexity and friction to add in order to compromise combustion chamber shape at high load.

  • @xivix6710
    @xivix6710 6 років тому +1

    The let downs for me are the CVT, and the double screens system.
    I can get use to a CVT no problem with that, but maintenance and replacement are expensive compared to a normal automatic transmission.
    The infotainment system on some Nissan cars, looks much better in my opinion.

  • @dns711
    @dns711 6 років тому +2

    This was on my list of vehicles I am considering to replace my 2016 Forester XT next year, but the fact that it is only available with a CVT just knocked it off the list.
    Until someone builds a CVT which can handle more than 300 lb. ft. of torque and can be rebuilt, I will never buy another vehicle with a CVT. I would also never buy a vehicle with a CVT with fake gear changes as the only option. That defeats the main benefit to having a CVT, the ability of a CVT to hold peak power.
    Subaru is doing the same thing as Lexus. I understand programming the CVT with fake gear changes to fool people as the default, but why won't Subaru and Lexus give us the ability to switch to a pure CVT mode?

  • @sic22l
    @sic22l 6 років тому +1

    I really like the refreshed design. It looks fresh and quite European. But there are a few dealbreakers:
    - sluggish CVT (especially off the line and in the city)
    - mismatched wooden trim (different color on the doors)
    - no adjustable lumbar support. For 50k, really?
    - infotainment system. Two screens mean double distraction, no Android Auto/Apple CarPlay support.

      @@brucegates6268 I like it alot. I've got the default set to "Sport" in the menu, so it feels like any other transmission. I've tried it all ways, and that seems to be the best. Be careful - it's unexpectedly fast when you push down the pedal. I have pulled out to go around a truck at half-throttle and looked down to see I'm going 110. It does it all fast and quietly. Very comfortable. Will carry almost anything but heavy construction materials. 'Love it! Good luck with yours.

    What Infiniti doesn't want you to know is they're building the new Qx50 in Mexico. The old model 2017 and earlier were made in Japan. I'd go for an older Qx50 for sure.

    RWD makes no sence in this class. Why you need RWD?? It´s a luxury family car and not a sportscar. Also CVT makes sence, best choice for cruising and fuel efficientcy and thats the main reason this car is at it is, fuel efficientcy. It´s crazy that other brands need hybrid systems to get such mpg´s.

    • @sic22l

      Hybrids get better mpg. CVT limits the performance in the city, it feels sluggish off the line.

      sic22l Yeah, that and CVTs should NEVER be in luxury cars, expect for hybrids. Not to mention, you also find a CVT in a Dodge Caliber, which is a horrible car. Who would want to have that in a luxury vehicle?

    The old QX50 is better. I’d much rather see a 400 hp 3.0 twin turbo V6 to replace the 3.7l NA V6 than a 2.0 turbo 4 with too much crap to go wrong. Also prefer a robust 10 speed planetary automatic transmission over a sluggish CVT.

    Nice! I was interested in the new / upcoming RDX, but I like this body style better... kinda like the Q5, but a little more stylish and colorful. I'll be curious to see what that exotic new engine tech does for reliability and service costs... Still, it's on my short list!

    The variable compression ratio engine is a big design improvement. Nevertheless, I can't justify its increased complexity therefore reliability with these premises, in the context they are going to use it: a big fat SUV. The 15% fuel economy saved, also thanks to the CVT, is completely lost due to the weight and shitty aerodynamics of the type of vehicle. Moreover, as you diligently reported, the other 250+hp 4 cylinders turbos are not way off these values of efficiency in real world testing. Yes a 10% improvement is a big thing if a technology comes to all the lot, but it is nothing in fuel savings in comparison to the expensiveness of these new models to begin with.
    Finally, in the class of vehicles that should resemble luxury and are priced $35-45k, I can forgive some bad interiors materials choices. Overall nice car, but without a particular sense if not to compliment about the brave engineering. Nice review (and one of the firsts too) as usual.

    • @bradcomis1066
      @bradcomis1066 6 років тому +1

      We'll see how the variable compression does when it trickles down to something like an Altima or Maxima. Maybe we'll see some decent numbers there.
      SUV fuel economy is indeed abysmal, like you said. It's pretty sad that 31mpg combined is class leading and the only way to get better mileage is get a hybrid.

    • @sic22l
      @sic22l 6 років тому +2

      @Eugenio A.
      Don't forget that CVT also compromises the performance, QX50 is slower to 60 and more anemic in city driving than its competitors.
      @B Com
      You can't trick physics, SUVs are tall (aerodynamics) and heavy, they need more fuel. Diesels make quite a big difference but they basically don't exist in the US.

    Alex, what's the actual decibel rating # ? I'm comparing to the acura rdx, which you rated a 70, and that's on noisy side isn't it ? .. seems like an awesome vehicle... i don't think it's competition has even close fuel economy to this, not in real world driving.. 25-26mpg average !! for a car that does 0-60 in 6.5 seconds ?!! that's great.. I'm guessing you have to use premium fuel.

    Hey Alex when can you review the Honda Accord or the 2017 Audi A4 or s4?

  • @Ficon
    @Ficon 6 років тому

    Nissan/Peugeot/Infiniti had to create an overcomplicated engine with unknown long term reliability just to compensate for CVT shortcomings and keep up with competition. The new RDX with the same power output is a full second faster to 60 and if you are spending 50k on a car you don't care about 2 mpg. As far as the steering wheel not moving when the wheels turn, this is the Boeing vs Airbus debate. There have been Airbus crashes due to control sticks not moving resulting in pilot disorientation. When autopilot moves controls in a Boeing, the yokes and the throttles move in the cockpit.
