You missed the main trick with SD-9 - you have to crank the level all the way up. This way you don’t actually hear it in all its glory. With level at max it totally changes the midrange structure. Try it, you’ll like it. My desert island pedal for more than 15 years. Lately I see more and more people realising what a unique pedal it is.
