  • Plastic, foam or paper cups can easily be made into indoor flying objects that demonstrate the force that causes curveballs, golf balls and many other examples to curve due to the Magnus effect. A variety of sizes and variables can can this simple experiment into a fun and educational learning experience.

Mr. Yeany I found your channel a few days ago and I've been going through your videos, watching a few every day, and I have to say you're awesome. You're enthusiastic, and that's something I think, overall, a lot of teachers and professors don't give their students/colleagues. In each and every video I can see how excited you are by all these concepts. Keeping the enthusiasm for science and physics alive in middle and high school is soooo important!! Keep it up!

One problem you didn't include is the difficulty of teaching students who do not speak English (at least here in the USA). The problem is only worsened by policies that enable the students to avoid learning English. They graduate functionally illiterate, don't care, and neither do their families seem to care. The answer is NOT to hire bilingual teachers and office staff. The answer is to compel these students to have a proper command of English, just as we would have to learn proper French if we planned to live in France.

You remind me of my favorite teacher in high school, Mr. Renouir. I struggled with math until he came along and taught with this same passion. To this day I credit him for me making it through high school. Oh, and by the way, he was also a police officer for APD!
Thank you for being a great science teacher. I sure your students will never forget you, much like I will never forget Mr. Renouir.

Brilliant demonstration. That is called the Magnus effect and at the start of the century they tried to propel a ship with it for if those cups are rotated and placed in the wind they will create a side or a lateral force.
Mr Bruce Yeany, congratulations, you should show that demonstration to young footballers for that is the method to score a goal from a corner shot or a free kick with a lot of players acting as a barrier for the shot. All young footballers should know about the Magnus effect for they could score if they only know how and where to kick a ball. That should be taught to all children for playing with a ball, is not just play , but it is pure science and if one models it with mathematics well one can have so many artistic trajectories.
    Well done Mr Yeany.

The most useful part of this as a physics demo is when you fire it on a vertical axis. It curves sharply to the side but drops very quickly to the ground. This proves that the distance covered in the "normal" orientation is because of the lift generated by the rotation, rather than just by the ballistic effect of being catapulted. Excellent.

It makes such an interesting trajectory. That sharp spike, it almost feels like it goes backwards for a moment before resuming forward movement.I think air resistence kills that large linear momentum the cup got from the rubber band, but the cup's rotation never stopped so it continues to accelerate it forward. But it's odd that it stops, I would have guessed that it reduces velocity until a specific value and stays there.

You can do the same thing with an empty ball point pen tube. After you've removed both ends place the tube on the edge of a table. Place your thumbs in the center of the tube and press down with some force. You can use the edge of the table to help you pinch the tube. While force is on the tube roll your thumbs back and allow the tube to move out away from you. If you do this smoothly it and evenly on both sides will create the same effect. I never knew this had a name, now I do. Thank you for the video.

The final flight at 45° testifies that Magnus lifting force is approximately equal to the drag force (if it is possible to separate them formally from each other). This follows from the fact that the vector sum of these forces is directed vertically upward and balances the force of gravity.

you can do a similar experiment to demonstrate this same effect by taking a cheap ball point pen with a plastic cylindrical body, stripping all the internals away, ink cartridge and back cap and simply putting the plastic body on one of your hard table top's and pressing firmly with your thumb until the pen body slips out from under your thumb.
