  • "He's ripe for the madhouse!" wrote the composer Carl Maria von Weber. Who was? Ludwig van Beethoven. And why? Weber had just heard a performance of Beethoven's Seventh Symphony with its rollicking fourth movement.
It can be amusing to read how the first listeners reacted to a composition that is today a classic. Weber wasn't the only critical voice. Clara Schumann's father, Friedrich Wieck, thought that "this symphony - particularly the first and the last movements - could only have been written in a state of inebriation."
Fast-forward from then to now: Do you need a lift? Listen to this finale to Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 in A Major, opus 92, marked "Allegro con brio" (Fast, with verve). This performance by the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen under the musical direction of Paavo Järvi is guaranteed to lift your spirits.
The swirl of energy and joy came from a man who was financially troubled, chronically ill and rapidly losing what was left of his ability to hear. Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 is something to keep in mind - and to open yourself to - if times are difficult. And not only then.
Deutsche Welle and Unitel Classica present Estonian conductor Paavo Järvi, conductor of the year 2019, and the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, recorded at the Beethovenfest in Bonn.

The very short close shot on the timpani at 05:39 shows, among many others, that not only the musicians, but also the TV team studied their score properly. Great music, great performance, great recording. Thanks ! This is orgasmic

This is magnificente, the music, Maestro Jarvi and the Orchestra, and also the video, the camera work and the editing work, the mixing of the images, all of which were magnificently done, doing justice to this great masterpice by Beethoven. Thanks DW Classical Music for sharing this video.

Superb orchestra working with an excellent conductor, who never lost the beat but whose exuberance shone through. Thank you.

The Bremen Symphony Orchestra under the Estonian conductor Paavo Jarvi masterfully interprets the 4th part of the 7th Beethoven Symphony. I suggest that this piece of music become the symbol of humanity's victory against the coronavirus. And to be broadcast by all the networks arrownd the world. A Greek anonymus.

Some old-style conductors, it appears, equated Beethoven's gravitas with slowness. Not Paavo Järvi ! His Allegro-Finale of the 4th movement is full of life, vivacity, brilliance, virtuosity, and yes, gravitas. Nothing is lost. This was a fantastic performance, and rendered the 7th Symphony in a joyous & new light. Thanks!

You mean Bernstein, his fast movements are barely tolerable and his slow movements are agony.

@@jpcs1st No, & No. I meant conductors like Furtwangler, Beacham, Böhm, Kubelik etc. I don't think that Bernstein's fast and slow movements are intolerable, but I dislike his conducting style which, to me, and it's just me speaking, always says: 'Look at me, I'm the greatest!'

@@waggishsagacity7947 Ok, but I dislike Bernstein, he is massively overrated as a conductor and even more as a composer.

Simplesmente um gênio. E a orquestra faz jus à grandiosidade de Beethoven. Particularmente este 4. movimento também remete à inesquecível interpretação do bailarino Jorge Donn, no filme Les Uns et les Autres.

@@DWClassicalMusic Simply a genius. And the orchestra lives up to Beethoven's grandeur. Particularly this 4th movement also refers to the unforgettable performance by dancer Jorge Donn, in the film Les Uns et les Autres.

Fabulous but after looking at the date I couldn't help wonder if this could have been last live performance before covid? And if this was a super-spreader concert - March 2020? Disturbing to think about.

The description clearly states this was recorded at the Beethovenfest in Bonn. The last one was held from the 6th to the 29th of September 2019. It's always held in August/September. DW Classical Music uploaded multiple clips from the festival in March, but I'm sure UA-cam uploads aren't spreading covid 19 though they may be contagious ;)

At the end of the video, you can see "copyright 2010" - it must have been recorded at the Beethovenfest Bonn 2009, where Paavo Järvi conducted a complete cycle of Beethoven symphonies.
