If I’m not mistaken, on that day, nobody pulled more than 465kg. And it was a tough lift. Then Eddie comes in and speed reps it, breaks his own record, then goes above and beyond and pulls 500kg with even more in the tank. That was absolutely insane. One of the greatest if not the greatest strongman to ever live!

Because 500kg was the next weight after 465kg. Other athletes were suggesting 480kg but the competition was tailor made for Eddie so they put 500kg. Jerry also said in an interview that Eddie rested almost 30 mins for that lift and Benny and Jerry were forced to wait for almost 45mins for their lifts in which they were already cooled down. The rule was always 15 mins rest but since it was tailor made for Eddie, they don't care about others that much.

"MY OPINION" I've watched alot of eddies video's, I watched the video where he talks about the lift and the aftermath of it. He explains that he was at a physical limit and couldn't push his body anyfurther. So instead of training physically he trained mentally, and created this scenario in his head that was AWFUL the worst KIND of TERRIBLE. Eddie then convinced him self that it would come true if he "failed" to lift that 500kg. He even says it himself he spent hours in the bathroom just mentally terrifying himself to the point it was literally life or death "IN HIS MIND". I honestly think they could have thrown another 15 to 30 KG's and the result would have been the same. (I don't think we'll ever know) he basically triggered the fight or flight instinct to give him access to "ALL 100%" of his strength the same way a 130lb woman, lifts a car off of her trapped child that she normally couldn't budge.

He set a milestone goal no one thought was possible. Secondly, because he did it the first time he tried it! At the end of the day a WR is a WR. We know Thor break the deadlift for 1KG and his effort were formidable. But you have to understand that Eddie in that day *already broke the WR Deadlift* pulling 465KG off the floor and a few minutes later he pulled the greatest lift in human history being already fatigue. Pulling +35KG on top of a WR you already broke the same night has never happened in ALL strength sports. The exact same thing applied to Shivlyakov breaking the masters deadlift record around the same time. No one disputes that lift because they don't have a vendetta like with this.
Speaking of competitions, Eddie's 'comp' was a farce set up entirely for him with his deadlift bar, his conditions, his weights picked by himself and Benny and Jerry there to make it look like a comp and not a one man show. He also did it in a multi-ply suit whereas Thor was single ply.

I think a lot people miss the point of all of this when we get into the Thor vs. Eddie argument for deadlift supremacy.
By doing the 500, Eddie brought the standard up by unbelievable margins and proved SO many people wrong. The previous record was more than 30 kg below that and there were so many people (even people close to Eddie) who were talking sh*t about Eddie’s chances in the months leading up to the lift. He also did it in front of an entire arena of people whereas Thor did it in his home gym surrounded mainly by his friends and family. I don’t care what you say, that has very big psychological impact on the lifter (anyone who has performed I front of a crowd can attest to this).
When Thor lifted the 501, he proved that he was a better deadlifter in terms of overall strength and capability. You can definitely argue that both of them were capable of more on the day of their lifts but Thor looked a lot smoother and even had a slight disadvantage being half a foot taller than Eddie and had to pull the bar much farther.
But at that point, expectations about pulling 500+ kg were a lot more optimistic than they were when Eddie did the 500. Eddie had already raised the bar and proved it was possible to pull 500 kg. No one was doubting Thor in same way they were doubting Eddie. I think with how good Thor was looking at his peak, almost everyone was pretty certain that he could do it.
Therefore in my opinion, Thor was definitely a stronger deadlifter and arguably a better strongman overall when they were both at their peaks, but Eddie’s lift is still by far the more impressive one. His had more significance and was far more impactful than Thor’s. Credit to both of these guys for what they accomplished during their lifetimes and glad they have at least agreed to disagree when it comes to their past beef.
