I have ran a 50 mile race with standard mileage plan. I ended with back to back 20 miles but was trying to run to fast and was spent. This March I decided to run a 43.6 mile trail close to home this fall. I started the low heart rate training and never was beat down. When I started I was running about a 13 minute mile. At end of training I was running 11:30 for my last long run, 30 miles. I just ran my goal run Saturday and ran a constant 12 minute mile the entire way. Just tired when done and very sore later but not like at the end of my 50 miler in which I fell apart and took 12 hours and 15 minutes.(about 14:45 pace). I will train this way from now on. By the way, I'm 57 years old.

Hello from Ontario too! I relate to strengthening the feet! After my first marathon I got plantar fasciitis. A few yrs later I’m pain free and strengthen my feet daily. I had no idea! I wear wider shoes too. Thank you for your valuable insight on so much stuff!

Happy to hear that Kirsten. Same here, cold winter running is awesome. That being said, winter in our Southern California doesn't compare to some of the brutal winters other runners experience. 😅

Great episode! I think the piece that resonated the most with me was hearing how many years it took to build his aerobic base. I’m a newer runner, I started during COVID years, so I need to remind myself to be patient.

I really enjoy your podcast Floris. I’m really new to running. I only started last week! 🤭 I use cycling predominately as my main source of cardio. Last week I decided to try running as a supplementary source of cardio. My 3rd attempt I ran a half marathon in 2hrs 9 min. Now I’m hooked!!! Looking forward to all your future podcasts ☺️🇨🇦

Floris, we have a little too much in common: I also have a Korean wife (tho she has the real UA-cam channel), we have 2 kids, I'm an ex-skateboarder, my first marathon is on Saturday, I train in zone 2. I don't know, the list goes on. Just found your channel and I'm loving the content. Thanks!

@TJMarentette currently my training is 80% aerobic at a 9 min per mile pace. Tempo runs at 7:30 pace building up to 10 miles. I am currently running 40 miles per week for 5 months straight. I will build up to 60 miles peak week with a 2 week taper. I haven't felt this good running, ever! I got this! Cheers 🍻

Many thanks @FlorisGierman and Todd! I always cherish Todd's insights and perspectives as they so resonate with my own experience and observations on the journey of low-heart rate training. For those earlier on the journey like me, Todd's experiences from a 5:00 to 3:47 marathoner are like a map we can follow. "The beauty and elegance of the low-heart training... and the most surprising thing is how much of running isn't running. If you want to be your best, running is just one portion of it."

My biggest take away, although small, is strengthening the feet, as someone who has had a stress fracture and now has a collapsed arch, my feet are holding me back, im 120KG and i have just started my running journey and yeah im only starting with small bursts combined with zone 2 training on the elliptical until my feet and legs feel more comfortable on those runs.

Great video, I am just starting my low HR training ahead of the London Marathon 2024 after securing a place. It is only my second marathon (Athens 2019 - 3:48) and I am aiming for a sub 3:30 this time around. It is great to hear the benefits of low HR and how to focus on form. Keep up the insights Floris, really helpful and it is helped me be more patient with my training.

Todd your story sounds similar in the wanting to start something after getting obease. Running was my thing too. Floris was part of the influence and MAF. And minimalist folks as well. Splay shoes started me out pretty good, bedrock sandals too. But just go barefoot. 100 feet, stop for the day. Put some shoes on. Then go again the next day 200 feet. ETC ETC., Forefoot will be mandatory for long distance. Then put your fly shoes on and race. But daily stuff minimal something feels great. Squishy shoes are not a benefit in general. Or high heel. Unless you like bunions or shin splints or faucitis or some form of something bad. Mark cuzella was part of the minimalist try for me too. He is a savior of the military too. Zone 2 most days

Nice to see a fellow Canadian/Ontarian on the podcast - amazing improvement over the years!! And facts: Garmin does send bad vibes with some of its negative messages, especially the “unproductive” one! 🇨🇦😊

    • @toddmarentette
      @toddmarentette 9 місяців тому +1

At first, I found it distracting, but really it’s doing nothing specific other than offering a nugget of data to use. And there is some truth to it, I think one could get really fast following Garmin’s advice but, a 99% probably of getting hurt.

Awesome interview as expected from Floris.
    Insightful questions. Insightful answers.
Respect and admiration for Todd’s journey.
This question: « why are you running?´, is a particularly interesting one.
For me, for the pleasure of course. Also for the feeling of physical well-being that results. Also for the mental well-being.
Yet also for the feeling of being one with this Universe. Being this small entity on a rapidly spinning Earth, around a Sun that is also spinning rapidly around the Galaxy, itself spinning… where does it end?l
Feeling a part of all this while running is an uplifting sensation.
    Thx for sharing.

Very nice episode. You should do a book with best quotes from all of your episodes.
"How much of running isn`t running" - this is so simple, but deep. And i really believe that most of the non elite runners are lacking S&C training (myself included). Even if i know how important it is, i still can`t get myself to sacrifice some time to put in one or two session of strength a week...

I tried low HR for 1 year and barely beat my marathon time from the year before but I saw that I had much more in the tank at the end. After a 10k training program I was able to PB my 10k and Half by 15%. I’ll keep training with low HR but with a slightly bigger window (121 is tough) and add some tempo runs to push my lactic threshold. Running fast is a treat for me and it motivates me to keep on running but the solace of an easy run is truly need.
