- Does the look and feel of a camera design really matter? Will it make us better photographers? Should we be looking for a retro design camera, or a more modern, PASM design camera? Some cameras are better for landscape photography, and other camera models work better for street photography. In this video I look at whether we need to consider the style of the camera.

Hi all! Here's one of the questions that I'm considering today. Are retro styled cameras better for our creativity, or does it even matter?
i sold all of my Nikon gear a year ago. I now own 3 Fuji cameras the XT1, XT3, and XT4. I am very happy with all 3. I no longer shoot professionally. So for the shear enjoyment of photography I love my 3 Fuji cameras.
I’ve had all sorts of cameras from the 1970s on. I bought a Fuji X-T30II and a Leica D-Lux 7 at roughly the same time two years ago. While the Fuji was more advanced, I always reached for the very compact hobbyist Leica because it feels perfect in my hands and I love that it’s light and easy to tote around. I ended up selling the Fuji, which made no sense, really, but I just love the little Leica with its now worn-in leather half-case. That Fuji just sat around for over a year collecting dust. I’m not a pro by any means but the DL7 inspires me to shoot.
If a retro camera inspires you, or their ergonomics fit your habits - and all that makes you wanting to go out and take pictures - then the answer is: yes. Otherwise it's just specific aesthetics.
I am drawn to the "retro style" cameras but not for their looks. It's the functionality. The ability to adjust the exposure triangle without digging into menus. Without even needing to turn the camera on is why I like them.
yeah, I like that too - that was always the main reason to get an X-T camera for me

I’ve been out with my S5II and three vintage Pentax lenses. The functionality of the Panasonic combined with the beautiful old film lenses scratches that nostalgic itch for me. Shooting with fully manual lenses is a real joy (much as I love my LUMIX lenses). Having a DSLR as your b cam gives me the best of both worlds

I’ve just spent a week shooting with an Olympus OM1n and an Olympus RC35. I’m not a better photographer for it but I enjoyed using them because they are simple to use. And, yes they are beautifully designed and functional. I deliberately left my X-T1 and my X-Pro2 at home. When I get my negatives back from the lab, we’ll see if if it improved my creativity.
I’ve owned and shot Leica M cameras since the M6 film generation in the mid 90’s.
I went through a whole bunch of things in between but ended up back at the M series again.
The pure simplicity is what I love. The total absence of any automation beyond Aperture priority. No AF at all.
Certainly doesn’t work for everybody but for me it does.
It's important that the camera speaks to you and you like shooting with it. As shooting a lot will make you a better photographer. But it's impossible to say which camera will do that for a particular person.
Retro cameras do feel very good in the hand and help me to get out and shoot. But that’s not a deal breaker for me. Thanks for video 😊

Several months ago you went on about the Fuji T1 just after I’d converted my T1 to infrared so I ended up buying two more T1’s. I love the T1’s but I went overboard. You’ve also get me back what I’ve liked about photography and helped me get over my focus on technology like latest autofocus, etc and I’m now using manual focus lenses on my Fuji E4 just like I did back in early 80’s with my Canon A-1’s and feeling the joy of photography again.
Nice, 3 T1’s! They’re going up in value, so you have a good set of cameras there. I’m looking at a T1 at the moment. I bet the E4 looks very sleek with the MF lenses? Love the sound of your set up! 😃
I’ve ended up with a retro collection XE1, XT1, XT5. As long as they do the job I ask of them, I’m happy. Luck you with all the trips coming up.

I'm just an avid hobbyist, but I like shooting with the retro fujifilm x100f and the fujifilm xe4. After watching this video , I ordered the fujifilm xt50. I really don't need it but I wanted it.
Nice, X-T50 will be lovely and small in your hand too - perfect as a ‘carry all day’ camera. Enjoy!
Grab a leica CL digital. It's a bit off balance to use with L mount lenses, but it totally works. But it's more fun with some M mount manual focus lenses. And those you can use on the L mount cameras, too. I like using a 28mm f/2 voigtlander on my CL. The camera doesn't look "classic" but it's actually very cool. But since you're using L mount as your main, you can justify the CL as a "backup" ;) and also have it for "casual" shooting while on a mission.
Does the look and feel of a camera design really matter? Hell yes! But does make me a better photographer? Well, no. I can still take crappy photos with a beautiful camera, but, I think I'm less likely to faff about and be more intentional. Just out of respect for my gear. Some months ago I found a Fuji X-T1 in Quebec that had been a studio backup camera and rarely used. Believe it or not there were only 117 actuations on it. It is a thing of beauty, in mint condition. It came with the battery grip, a 56mm lens, a new eye cup, extra batteries and a charger, and a flash. To me this is a hall of fame camera. The only hard part was finding a camera cage to fit which meant I had to have a cage retrofitted to the camera by a machinist. Found a guy just 3km from my house.
I have been using my retro digital D700 and D3 more than my current ones. I got a mint D3 cheap with less than 12K activations and I am having fun with it. Years ago I donated all my film Nikons to a school's camera club. 12mp works just fine for me.

I definitely prefer a retro style camera, hence I'm a passionate Fujifilm user. Not fan of their newer models style-wise though with their PASM approach to shooting.
I know what you mean, especially when it comes to a more soulful approach to photography. Trouble is, for fast action photography the PASM is so easy...maybe we need both?
For an enthusiast such as myself, how my camera looks and feels is important to me. But if I were a Pro, I would have a G9 II or S5 II.
The point is, as an enthusiast, I want to be inspired to take my camera with me. Back in 2010 I wanted to learn more about photography, at that time Canon was everywhere but their cameras were huge and ugly plastic things. I saw a little Panasonic LX5, yep, that suits me. I went on and learnt with my LX5, but would I have bothered taking that big ugly Canon? I don't think so. I still have my LX5 and I still like how it looks and feels.
Retro look first! Hobby, 55 years shooting. I had and still have several Fujifilm cameras, currently X20, X-M1 , X-T10. Love the old ones more. Favorite lens: 18 f2, 35.f1.4. And I just bought Nikon Z fc, mint, cheap. Nice camera. Let's see. These cameras make me to go out and shoot. But not e.g. Sony or Canon, no camera in their range to inspire me. But that's me.
Yeah, totally see that. The retro cameras are great for that slower approach too - makes the whole thing feel relaxed
This evening at golden hour (moreover greyish hour - it was quite overcast), I used my Canon G7X II when walking my dog around a beautiful large lake. There was an abundance of ducks and swans. It has a zoom (28-120mm FF equivalent I think) which is useful but, as I soon realised, not long enough.
I found the whole experience excruciating. Fiddly controls. Plastic. I’ll take a look at the finished product on a proper screen but I think I needed my LUMIX G9 II or 5DIII with a longer telephoto lens. I guess that is why small pocketable point and shoot cameras are not a hit with wildlife and landscape photographers! 😂
BUT I also think I would have been happier with my Fujifilm X10 because of the less fiddly operations and all metal ‘feel’. The ducks would have looked like specs due to the limited focal length (about 70mm FF eqiv I think) so the composition options would have differed. BUT I would have felt happier. 😊
As a hobbyist Sony user on a budget I’m definitely drawn to vintage lenses as Sony FE zooms are soooo expensive (apart from my trusty kit 28-70). Trouble is you can also get obsessive about them and I’m up to 17 now 😂!

Funny you should have this thought. Just watched @SamuelStreetlife review of the X100VI and it really put him off that lots of (German) people were staring at him and the camera. I think a cool looking camera is great but I have not been out on the street much.

true, but I find I spend so much time with my cameras, that I like them to become intuitive for quick action etc
I like the retro look… but for real photography the ergonomics suck. Fast action with wildly changing background lighting… left hand holds the camera/lens, right hand has your thumb for moving the aperture wheel or activate iso and back button focus, right index finger for shutter wheel/shutter button. Your eye on the EVF so you can see the image BEFORE you take it and the expore metering and F-stop values/Shutter speed etc. No way I am seriously looking to fiddle with rings on the lens and dials all over the body. No menus involved- at least for Canon and as far as I know the other modern bodies from most vendors…
I know what you mean - in my Canon days I was really able to change the settings so intuitively at a moments notice, and it's the same again now with the LUMIX s5ii. I do like that...
