  • Welcome to our 2 part series of our journey from Uyuni in Bolivia to San Pedro de Atacama, through the World's Largest Salt Flats, the Bolivian Salt Flats of Uyuni or Salar de Uyuni.
The first part (this video) is about exploring the Uyuni Salt Flats and staying overnight at a Salt Hotel.
The second part (next video) will be about our travel through desert landscapes from the Salt Flats to San Pedro de Atacama in Chile.
On the first day, we explore the vast Uyuni Salt Flats starting in the small town of Uyuni.
We start with the train cemetery, followed by our lunch at a restaurant made of salt. In fact, almost whatever we saw on the day was made of salt :-)
Our next stop was the mark of Dakar, Bolivia, and the first salt hotel in Bolivia, with flags from all over the world from travelers who have been here before. This is where the Salt Flats start.
As we go deeper into the Salt Flats, the Salt created interesting geometric shapes, hexagons, or polygonal shapes making for an interesting structure that looks like a beehive.
Our guide made us do odd poses, which resulted in hilarious perspective photos. As the salt flats have an unending horizon, these perspective photos are possible and one of the most fun parts of the Salar de Uyuni trip.
Our next stop was at the Incahuasi Island which stands tall amidst the salt desert and is home to giant cacti, which are said to be over 1000 years old. We explored the island's rocky terrain and admired incredible views of the salt flats from the top of the island.
Finally, we experienced the most magical moment of the day, the sunset on the Bolivia Salt Flats. As the sun descended, the sky turned into a canvas of hues of pink and orange, complementing the white expanse below. It was a moment that left us in absolute awe and brought a perfect ending to our Day 1 of Salar de Uyuni tour, before we checked in to a hotel for the night, a hotel made of salt!

Amazing place! During monsoon it becomes a natural mirror reflecting the sky above.

Very nice images and pictures 😃 I hope your skin survived it, because of the salt the skin of many tends to dry out and also the lips can become dry and salty.
My father used to work a time in Uyuni, in those years there were no means to heat up homes. Due to the narrations of my father, I always think of Uyuni as a very, very cold place... 🤣
Nice you found your flag there 😁

Thank you! You are right, the skin got dry. In fact, my lips look chapped in some frames, but the excitement makes us forget those things. Uyuni was very cold after the sunset, but the hotel was cozy. Yes, we were happy to find our flag(s) there :-)
