  • Julian Schnabel is a painter and filmmaker known as an integral member of the American Neo-Expressionists along with Jean-Michel Basquiat and Eric Fischl. Schnabel’s gestural application of paint on massive canvases, use of unconventional materials like broken plates, and representation of human figure are hallmarks of his most famous works. “My paintings take up room, they make a stand. People will always react to that,” he said of his work. “Some people get inspired, others get offended. But, that's good. I like that.

Good painter or not, the plate “painting”s work. They were a good idea. They also work if he crams a portrait into them. They’ll work if you make them yourself. Pollack, slinging paint with a stick works. If you have any sort of touch and sense of space, it’ll work for you as well. Mondrian’s geometric grids work. It’s hard to come up with a great working idea that lives beyond your ego process, stands on its own as a pure creation. Like him or not, Schnabel came up with one and he’s able to take it to the bank. Like him or not, he had the energy to pull it off. Outdo him, by all means. Go for it. Let’s see what you come up with.

There doesn't seem to be anything like a good painter or bad painter except for the mental constructs we bring to it. Like or don't like is a nice first step but insufficient. Now what? I just want to find the courage to paint. I no longer care if it is good or bad.

Laurence Goldman, good points you make. For me, Schnabel puts ghosts on canvas. Terrible, dreadful, horrible paintings, but not in the common sense; in that I feel terror, dread and horror in them. I hear the Dracula music. Even comic, in the German sense of the word comisch, meaning strange. Many of the comments his work usually elicit puzzle me, make me remember that many people really don’t have a sense for how immensely broad painting is. How agoraphobic we can be as viewers standing in front of a canvas where something we don’t recognize is frighteningly present. And for me the plate paintings are often the least interesting.

The 'successful' never actually say anything as if pictorial content of their production is a given and that the convention is perfectly fine for being financially approved i.e 'I paint like this and I paint like that' and not 'What the hell is it?'

If it were a nuclear bomb that he was making, for example; that's not part of the discourse at all , just 'Oh I put a wire here and I put a wire there and that's what I do.' it's a bit 'matter-of-fact' to say the least.

In my opinion (and it’s my opinion which isn’t worth much to anybody but me) his work is “ok” but his images personality comes across as arrogant. He’s trying to appeal to a higher societal investor Not so much to the blue collar art fan.

I don't love all of Julian's work, but I always find it interesting. Sure... he's wealthy, but he still does his own painting unlike many of the 1%er artists. People don't decide what art is great, history does. I think history will decide in favor of Schnabel's work.

Praise and criticism come out of the same bucket. Julian is a real artist. Like all real artists, he is a work in progress himself. Learning, thinking, experimenting, creating. He is probably never bored. A real artist has to have a thick skin with a sense of humor. There are bored trolls everywhere. He paints what he wants, when he wants. I think he just keeps getting better. I see these works as some of his best. I am happy he keeps painting. A real artist has to satisfy her/his own self, first. Most critics are wanna-be-artists anyway who have 'excuses' for not creating. Thanks for continuing to create and share these wonderful videos. Many of us live in faraway places from New York. I love how he opens with some obscure reference like he once did a movie. “Um there are um imagery, um time, painting down, and that’s a painters concern” - MLKs lost archive What a legend. He’s the James Lipton of Walmart art section. “Look I turn the stones over and I get um kind of core way the apple cores behaves. He has a reputation for being bit of a meathead. He was once described as the Sylvester Stallone of the art world. The art world audience is way more narrow than that of the movie going audience and a lot of it is far too snooty to want someone like that into their community. His plate paintings can be seen as a little gimmicky and he is absolutely not the most technically skilled painter on earth. I think ultimately he is seen as an art world social climber or a politician who has maneuvered his way to success rather than earning it the "right" way.

@@kurtisgreene5157 he really did earn it tho. he helped create our modern contemporary market in a lot of ways because he was new and not a "legacy act" ala ab/ex, picasso, minimalists, mondrian et all. modern art was about to keel over before he showed up (well he along with the germans and the italians and the street kids) . his work can be bizarre and sometimes half baked but when hes good he is good the way that a free jazz musician can still play standards once in awhile. he has that gift of being new and terrible and raw but also tender and he understands color very well. he knows his art history too. i just wished we got to see his better work more often.

one of your least favorite would be a more realistic assessment then. art and painting belongs to everybody, and that's billions of people, all of whom have smeared something against some other surface that made a mark that amused them. it's each their own opinion what about painting inspires them or not. i subscribe to duchamp in that 'art' is not a sacred and holy word, but rather it means simply to do. to do anything. don't like one of the billions of artists in the world? it is an honor i'm sure that you took the time aside to point at this one artist in particular.
