  • Im running windows 7 64 bit, using the sapphire usb 6, and the program bome 1.4 sx. Sorry for the quality of the vid, its my first one! For instructions in a pdf go to either the acess virus community forum, or the unofficial virus forum (infekted) and search for the title : access virus c - how to update the operating system (os) or upload new sound patches.

    This method works for Virus Indigo 1.
    Dear Peter, thank you for sharing this video with us. This is 10 times better than the Virus Manual and Update instructions.

    Thanks Peter, as the manual isn't the best in this area. This worked very well for me to go from 5.5 to 6.5 on a KC. In a single dump. Only issue I had was an 'Incomplete Block Error' so I throttled the transmit speed down in Bome.

    Thanks very much for making this video. It’s still really helpful here in 2024. One thing I would add though is that your closing remark that uploading new presets probably follows the same pattern does not appear to be correct. In fact it was not correct for me. I used your method, on PC, with Bomes to successfully update my OS to 6.5 and the Banks A>H but RAM banks A and B were just duplicates of later ROM banks E & F. This is normal. To update A, B and M with the ABM.mid file presets I have had success via two methods:
    1 > you have to be in normal synth playing mode, and just play the .mid file into the MIDI IN port of the synth. It seems totally implausible. There will be no reaction from the device during the play process or at the end, but the presets magically appear, unlike doing it in Store mode or RX/Verify mode, when it says the ABM.mid file contains errors and does not install the presets.
    2 > Alternatively, and best IMO, you can still find the EMU Sound Diver librarian online and it still works in Win11 in 2024, which is amazing. Using this you can bi-directionally link your Virus with your PC, copy all the patches from the Virus into the librarian, add-in new patches to the on-screen set if you want to e.g. the ABM.mid patch set, and send them all back to the Virus. I have verified this works.

    I had a virus C since new, still have the sound diver cd etc, been such a long time since I updated the OS and put soundpacks on it but I recall it all going smoothly, I also remember installing sound diver on a macbook pro about 10 years ago and backing up some patches. So I guess if people these days are struggling to find software to do this, then sound diver probably has compatibility issues with windows 10 or Access is not handing out the software, I'm curious to try it but don't have a cd drive on my computers anymore.

    Could you or somebody give a quick walkthrough of how to install new banks on a Virus C please? Thank you.

    In your post you said that you changed the power pack. Are you talking about the external power supply or is that something internal?

    • @peterheard5132
      @peterheard5132  5 років тому +1

      I changed the External power supply. There is also an internal battery which stores everything you save....so sometimes that needs changing too, but you need to backup first

    Hi Peter - thanx for sharing this! I'd like to give it a go (once I've sourced an appropriate MIDI interface) as I'm on OS 5.0 still. A quick question - did multiple OS updates finally sort out your audio issues that you mentioned? Mine is suffering from similar issues - occasionally when it boots up, no audio is produced until I move the volume knob. On other occasions, the audio simply drops out (a reboot fixes it) and I also get the issue where a whole lot of white noise appears in the audio output. This appears at random and can only be fixed by a reboot. I think the drop outs and white noise are caused by bad capacitors somewhere in the audio output stage - did you find this? Thanx!

    • @peterheard5132
      @peterheard5132  5 років тому

      Hey dude. Sadly the capacitor fix and the update did not save my virus. I later got a ti, and started feeling like virus synths don’t like travelling round to gigs, so I shifted to other gear. I Would like to hear how you get on though

      @@peterheard5132 Thanx for your reply - sorry to hear those fixes didn't work for you. I'll still give the OS upgrade a go on my Virus C. The audio output died completely yesterday but thankfully a factory reset brought it back to life so I don't belive now that my issue is hardware related after all.

    For some reason this worked for me: upgrade with Waldorf’s Spectre software, and in standard mode (not update). I used Roland aira mx1 midi out. I tried a lot of different things (cables software interfaces) and the above “solution” came up by mistake! Still can’t understand why the virus was receiving Sysex in standard mode and not in update. Probably the above would work and with other utilities, not only spectre.

    great info thanks, no luck on windows 10 yet. the large file and chunk version just give checksum error every time. have tried various programs so far with same result and tried to lower the transfer speed. maybe i'll try installing a virtual machine with windows 7 on it another day

      Im running windows 7 64 bit, using the sapphire usb 6, and the program bome 1.4 sx. In theory it should run with various interfaces, but I think using Bome 1.4sx is important. what did you try?

    Hi, Nice video btw, but i have problems with upgrading to higher OS. I have OS 5 version on my Access Virus C at the moment and I want to upgrade to higher OS 5.5 or 6.5. I did exactly the same as you showed bome and the settings are correct, checked them all and when I press sent on Bome, the virus does not react, always says "waiting for data", very strange, i did check all parameters again and still the same problem. I use a Roland USB UM-ONE midi in/out cable for that. But with the editor i have no problems with transfering and receiving the patches, that works fine to me, just the firmware i can not do. Do you know what the problem could be ? Thanks

      Hi Luc, I would try a different midi cable, or a different midi interface.

    After you have successfully started sending sysex parts, you can skip from about 4 mins, to the end of the updates at 9:48 to see the final steps

    Won't work for me. Trying to add patches to the virus C. Keeps coming up with "checksum" when trying to send the file. Using komplete audio 6 interface, but have also tried with the roland TB-03 and does the same.

    • @peterheard5132
      @peterheard5132  5 років тому +1

      Hey, sorry to hear that. It took me hours and hours to find this solution. Try a different program...ps this tutorial is for updating the os, so I’m not sure if it will work for loading patches, which I have never done, it I think people use midi ox or the specialised virus program to load patches

    • @hankattack
      @hankattack 5 років тому

      Peter Heard managed to update to 6.5. I was only running 6. Thought this may of sorted it. But still won’t let me add patches.
      Have tried using - midiox, bame and cubase. And also using different midi interfaces. This is my first hardware synth. So even though I’ve been on off making music for 10 years, I’ve never had anything to do with synths other than vst’s. Which just work lol
      The fact it’s giving me the checksum error through everything I’m trying, I’m thinking it’s more the settings on the virus its self. I’ve tried numerous combos which I’ve found online but none seem to work. Either doesn’t register I’m sending info, or get the error. Have you uploaded any sound banks at all? Do you know what the settings should be on the unit itself? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Other wise I’m going to end up throwing it out the window lol

    • @peterheard5132
      @peterheard5132  5 років тому

      @@hankattack I havent loaded patched onto the virus before. there are setting in the midi menu about midi rx (receive) I think you are on the right track re checksum - its a settings issue. could be global midi channel too. try different channels. sometimes channel 1 = channel 0 on some devices. Alos are you registered at INFEKTED forum or the official access virus forum. searching there will be fruitful, also you can ask questions and i am sure there will be posts about uploading patches. theres also facebook group access virus c users which is active. good luck

    This did not work for me, at least when powering up while holding down the store button, then pressing the store button again to ready the Virus to take in the OS data. What DID work was by simply turning on the Virus and then playing the OS files from a Nuendo MIDI track. Unless you have an original Virus from when they first came out, you don't need to go through the whole powering up while holding down the store button. Also BOME did not work for me. Again fortunately Nuendo did.
