Haven't really done publishing at all, my experience is more in library circulation of said things, either by adding to the collection or, more often, our book sale where there are lots of good finds, which have drained about $10 from me just from books, though I also gave about $30 for DVDs we weeded out as well.

Yes they have biases, yes they sometimes turn down good books, yes even in the states they take waaaaay too much money. But they do serve as an important bullwark for quality assurance, and I think it is important that there is some curation as to which books should and should not come out. Ultimately, it all depends on where you want your book, and your authorship to go I guess. If you wanna one and done, or just dabble occasionally, go full throttle self publish. If you do want to write regularly, there are some benefits to working with a publisher, like makibg sure your book gets places it normallu wouldn't, award applications etc.
As a fellow writer who managed to get their first book published and is working on their second, I wish you all the luck on yours dude. I'd love to hear a bit about your book too, and while I can't help you decide which way of publishing to go (I took the finding a publisher route) I still wish you luck on it.

I'd go the self publish route as getting a publishing house is such a crap shoot, I know having both tried and failed myself and edited for those who have. (Neither were particularly happy with what happened. They lost control of covers, titles and such and hated the way they were treated. In one case they were brought in by one editor only for that lady to leave the firm and her work to then be put in the hands of an unsympathetic and barely educated kid who had no understanding as to the period or the themes being explored) So... yeah I'd certainly self publish to begin with, there's no reason not to tout your manuscript around in the meantime and even after but get your work out there and then go on to the next one.

If you go Publisher route, find one who has successfully dealt with your genre. Don't sign away all your copyright licences to the publisher just because they ask you to.
Number one- I am so interested and what you Your novel is about sitting characters protagonist antagonist magical system if it has one etc. Number two- I think you should go with self-publishing because he keeps all the royalty you will be in control of your book like from editing to cover to marketing etc. I know it may seem intimidating in the first place but once you get the hang of it you'll be fine.
