One is not better than the other until you decide what sound you are looking for. Most early Fuzz faces often sounded different from one another due to manufacturing tolerances, different suppliers of parts, and Germanium's temperature sensitivity issues. Amp (Fender v Marshall, etc), guitar (single coil v humbucker, active v passive), and signal chain all play a role. This video is a good tool for helping you decide what fits you better.

There's a few things new people need to know about the fuzz face, and all early fuzz circuits (they're all related), the input impedance is extremely low, like 10k. Thats the reason they clean up by barely touching the volume pot on the guitar, but that low input impedance means buffered bypass pedals before and sometimes after the fuzz face will wreak havoc on them.
Putting a wah in front of a fuzz face and using them together turns the wah into a super high treble boost only. But that is how hendrix used a wah and fuzz together, but hendrix also used quite a bit of amp overdrive, and was able to turn off the fuzz face and still had enough gain.
I have both fuzz faces, and I've always preferred the jhf1. The jdf2 gets mushy and is way too bass heavy with my guitar and amp, the jhf1 cuts through, and doesn't get near as mushy.

      It was wrong advice.
Dunlop doesn't make 1st generation pedals.
They can't activate the TRUE sound from just 1 pedal out of the professional SET of pedals.
None of those sounds were a fuzz sound.
If you buy a fuzz pedal from Dunlop, it requires you behave like a professional AND YOU buy the full set cause they won't activate the original sound by themselves.

The best FF made by Dunlop in my opinion is the mxr classic 108 mini. Tiny footprint, same sound as the Hendrix fuzz face played here (cause it’s the same circuit), and the buffer switch is a really cool addition that makes it more versatile. Plus it’s reasonably priced.

      You're wrong alex.
      JH had custom handmade pedals.
General purpose is NOT custom handmade pedals.

I think the difference in note clarity is more obvious between the germanium vs silicon with the humbuckers compared to the single coils. There's a difference going into an overdriven amp that you can hear in both guitar examples, but I think it's more obvious with the humbuckers.

    • @dreyn7780
      @dreyn7780 2 роки тому

      Wrong.
Neither pedal has produced its Dunlop sound yet.
JH is a custom SET of pedals.
      They don't work by themselves.
The original pedals work by themselves but the signature pedals must be built differently to the originals.
So they're built as a SET.
They won't activate the original sound by themselves.
The general purpose fuzz pedals also require the Dunlop mix&Match set of pedals before any of them actually work.
The red fuzz requires more Dunlop pedals before its signal gets converted for the amp to play.

I prefer silicon, just as Jimi did. (And I love the colour). Silicon transistors usually have more gain and this adds to a slightly higher input impedance leaving one with less tone sucking. It's not gone, but it's less. The tone sucking is important for a FFace because it takes away harsh treble at full fuzz and it goes away when lowering the guitar's volume. But with silicon the balance is better to my ears.
Many overrate the differences in the adoration of germanium. Silicon is stable and indeed has better definition. Rolling back volume gives shimmering cleans, so one can back down the treble in the amp a bit anyway.
Hendrix rolled off volume constantly and perhaps most of the time which added big time to him preferring silicon.

Both types of Fuzz Faces have their pros and cons, Germanium Fuzz Faces tend to sound a bit smoother, but are very temperature sensitive, on the other hand Silicon Fuzz Faces aren't nearly as temperature sensitive as Germanium one are, but they do have a nasty habit of self-oscillating at very high frequencies due to their much higher gain.

I think it’s a question of how they are to be used. I think the red one is like abig muff in that it is best in a clean amp because it brings the rest. Whereas dirty the Hendrix one worked best because that bass cut and mid boost allowed it to be clear. Tbh this just made the super fuzz make the most sense to me tbh. You can run it clean on the scoop setting and it’ll bring the bass and high end. Or dirty on the mid push setting which throws the highs and lows away. Dirty the mid push makes sense. Clean the scoop all day.

The red fuzz face pedal requires the Dunlop wah pedal to get the fuzz to activate its TRUE sound.
Both those 2 pedals require the Dunlop rotovibe pedal to convert the signal for the amp.
The sound from this video is not the TRUE Dunlop sound.
It hasn't been converted for the amp.
You're missing the rest of the professional SET of pedals.

    • @stevenburvenich168
      @stevenburvenich168 2 роки тому

If one has the fuzz on all the time the silicon is better. But it means a lot of other elements and trade-offs, like backing the treble off a bit on the amp which comes back when lowering the guitar's volume. Sure, this is a specific chain setup. Before you know it, one needs a silicon chain and a germanium chain ;)

The problem is that most of these factory fuzz effects use poor quality germanium transistors. You should try to make a fuzz with Russian germanium transistors from the GT series. These are high-quality transistors that are normally used for precision electronics. For example GT321B.

I'd also add that one should buy a dozen of them, and measure their leakage and Hfe, choosing a pair that are low leakage and with the second having a bigger Hfe than the first one.

  • @skeletonpete
    @skeletonpete 3 роки тому +6

Thanks for the comparison. IMHO the germanium sounds more like Hendrix than the one named for him. From what I've read, Roger Mayer switched to silicon for stability not necessarily tone. Certainly the G's clean up better, which is a huge advantage on stage.

    • @CorbCorbin
      @CorbCorbin 3 роки тому +3

      Germanium doesn’t clean up better.
If you didn’t know which had the BC108, you’d say something different.
I’ve tested this theory with a dozen players, and it’s always the same. They think they know which Fuzz Face is best, and that the JHF1 just can’t compare with Analogman White Dot NKT275 Ger transistor Fuzz Faces.
Every single time, in these blind tests, they choose the JHF1 for best sound snd one they would use on their rig.
The idea of Germanium being “the sound” of Hendrix, or superior cleaning up is nostalgia.
It’s like the gear heads who will swear that the 1983 Tubescreamer they use is just has a better sound than a new one. No it doesn’t. It’s the same exact circuit, and other than the pits being slightly different, one can dial in the exact tone with them.

They're both missing the rest of the professional SET of pedals.
1 pedal out of the SET doesn't work.
You're 20 years behind the rest of us.
Jimi hendrix signature pedals IS a SET of pedals.
When are YOU going to wake-up?
Dunlop makes a professional SET of pedals.
      Its called a mix&Match set.
In my opinion 99% of guitarists are living in the past. Day dreamers.
WHY would a factory reward a customer who buys 1 pedal?
Do you REALLY think they're going to give 1 jimi hendrix sound to a customer who buys 1 pedal?
They Would destroy the value of the original pedal jimi actually used.

@@dreyn7780 Also people forget when these Pedals were first made there wasn't many and no one had massive Boards so the Signal chain was different, also as with the Rangemaster, some were designed to go straight into the Amp with nothing else in the chain but it seems some think that any FF in a chain of 10 other pedals bears some resemblance to the original sound! It's laughable. (Plus they think that a Single Coil and Humbucker will work the same with it LOL)

MIKE BANDFIELD, look into trying to get that hendrix "bell" clean tone its different than glassy srv cleans. Hendrix used a white 63 strat with black bobbin pickups with the fuzzface with the soundcity amplifier I think gave him that hendrix "bell"clean tones. Roger mayer makes a pedal called a voodoo drive which kenny wayne sheppard uses to get those hendrix bell tones. You can hear them on hendrix first and second album his clean tones are not a normal clean tone which others refer to the hendrix bell. Try to make a video on how to get those hendrix bell cleans. It wasn't a great video.
Neither pedal activated their TRUE sound yet.
Dunlop doesn't make 1st generation pedals.
1st generation pedals are pedals that work by themselves.
They don't require any other pedals to be in the signal path.
So Dunlop makes more complex pedal designs.
A Dunlop fuzz pedal requires the rest of the Dunlop mix&Match set of pedals before any of them actually work.
This video demonstrated both pedals didn't make any Dunlop fuzz sounds.
The JH pedal requires the other 3 JH pedals AND 1 Dunlop pedal called rotovibe.
If you're missing 1 pedal from the JH SET, none of them work.
The red Dunlop fuzz pedal requires more Dunlop pedals from the mix&Match set of pedals before it will work.
Don't approach Dunlop if you're only going to buy 1 from the SET.

These pedals from Dunlop aren't 1st generation pedals.
If you want 1st generation pedals you'll have to shop elsewhere.
These pedals are part of SETS.
      They're beyond 1st generation pedals.
They don't activate the original sound by themselves.
      That's 1st generation.
Hendrix original pedals were aftermarket customs.
So these Dunlop pedals are beyond those pedals.
      They're built-in to a set.
      You're not given a choice 1 or 2 or 3.
Its the full set or none of them work.
Dunlop doesn't allow you to get the professional sound from 1 or 2 pedals.
If you want the old-fashioned life, you'll have to locate the original old pedals.
Dunlop builds a professional SET of mix&Match pedals. Designed to compete with multi effects equipment.

But dunlop sells a professional SET of pedals, not individual pedals.
Both pedals require additional pedals to activate and refine the signal.
The original jimi Hendrix pedal could work by itself, so this blue pedal can't work by itself.
It will only work in a SET of pedals.
Both pedals require the dunlop rotovibe pedal to complete the signal.
You haven't managed to get either pedal to activate the sound yet.

No such thing as 'Best' only what is good for you....Music isn't definative, it's subjective as is the gear you use, these pedals will not sound like this in a different rig as every pedal is just part of a signal chain and EVERYTHING effects that signal before it hits the Driver!

Both terrible, which is why I've never had one.

Notice how none of those sounds were a fuzz sound.
Those sounds had cracking distorted sounds, not fuzz.
You failed to activate the fuzz sounds.
Both of those pedals require the rest of the Dunlop SET of pedals.
The JH fuzz requires the rest of the JH SET of pedals.
The Dunlop fuzz requires the rest of the Dunlop mix&Match set of pedals.
It should be REALLY obvious to you by now.
Thinking you can take 1 pedal out of a set of pedals and get it to work for you, is really childish thinking.
These are professional pedals and they require professionalisum from YOU the buyer.

Thats wrong iv used my fuzz face with an overdrivenamp and a vox wah and its sounded fuzzy and great realise that dunlop didnt invent the fuzz face circuit 😂

@@BiggyC-dh2kn he couldn't even activate the pedal to get it to work.
The switch only turns on the power from the battery.
      The output signal requires converting.

      @@harryguitar8506 hello harry.
Dunlop doesn't make a general purpose pedal.
Dunlop pedals must be different to the original jimi hendrix pedal.
Vox wah only works with Vox guitar pickups and other Vox pedals and Vox amps.
Dunlop doesn't make the same old circuit.
      Its custom electrics.
You haven't even said what brand fuzz you're using.
      No introductions, no conversation.
      No conversation no judgements.
Once you realize Dunlop is not your friend, you'll realize you've wasted thousands of dollars buying products you can't use.
Then you'll realize you'll have to spend thousands to get stuff to work for you.
Then you'll realize you've been conned, robbed and exploited.
