I love the look of the box office and the lounge! But the home theater auditorium is a bit of a disappointment. Yes it looks great but the scale of it doesn't match the scale of the box office and lounge. And this guy is going on about the real metal used for the auditorium 's ceiling tile and it being made from real silver, gold and platinum. But classic movie palaces and opera houses that looked ornate usually didn't use real metals at all. It was usually carved wood made to look like brass, copper, silver or gold. And I too am also annoyed that the screen isn't bigger. This seems to be pervasive with home theaters of this scale. They have a giant lobby and box office exterior yet the screen is the size of the flat screen in my wife and I's bedroom. When you add surround sound as well to a screen that small of size, one's perception makes it seem like the screen is smaller.
Nop you call it Novo richi , have a lout of mony but no style. Money does not buy good taste or knowledge. All the glory Can't hide the essence of home theater For those who love the field. @@tedstyle3798 You can view a 65 inch tv further out than 13.5 feet. That figure of 13.5 feet is the optimum distance for getting image clarity but that distance was from the era of 1080p televisions so today with 4k if you desired it you could sit closer than the 13 feet and not see pixels on screen. It is not about maximum distance but minimum distance.
It's because it's cinemascope (very wide) and it has to shrink for regular movies. I would have opted for a bigger regular screen and accept the black bars for cinemascope.
GizmoMaltese the process of using curtains to cover up the unused portions of the screen is called masking and is something the major American cinema chains including AMC are too lazy to bother with
I am always baffled by these home theatres for exactly the same reasons. Movie experience for me is seeing the film on the largest screen possible. All this money and technology and you confine it to a screen that doesn't seem bigger than 100 inches. When in Cinemascope, it's fine, but I'd have the IMAX ratio with that width and accept the black bars when I'm watching something in Cinemascope.
@@stinkyratpoo I agree. A lot of old cinemas have similar sized screens. For a home theater that's on the large end. Obviously that an IMAX sized screen isn't going to fit a home.

@@venomtang That is called an opinion trust me if they wanted to have more center seatings they would have. They defo got the MONEY for it. But that was their style and it is olay to critizes that. But what is not okay to is to talk shit.
It's bigger than you think. The screen is a 2.39:1 aspect ratio which most movies are shot in (with an anamorphic lens), so it will actually be wider than you think. When watching 1.78:1 content the curtains are aligned to the side of the frame so there isn't white showing on the sides.
Microwave the owner of this theater def doesn’t actually care about the actual technology behind home theater, especially when he spends more on the look of the theater than the actual tech. Don’t get me wrong it’s gorgeous, but he clearly just put a theater in his house because he could.
I have a home theatre and I do not buy into atmos. It simply has not impressed me. The vast majority of their film library is probably not atmos and is just dolby digital. Even 7.1 is only about 1/10 modern movies never mind atmos.
@@bighands69 Atmos is actually rather prominate and for me I found that it adds something though if you don't like it then yo u don't audio coming from the ceiling then you don't like audio coming from the ceiling but most movies are being mastered and remastered in that format since it simply makes sense. Master it once and you have it covered for theaters and for home system . The ceiling speakers are just there to sweeten the deal for consumers, everything else about atmos is designed to appease hollywood's desire of mastering a movie only once.
@@Microwave414 It is not that I dislike it I just see no real benefit to it. There might be one or two movies were it excels but the vast majority it offers nothing. I have a 7.2 and the vast majority of my movies are 5.1 surround.

Do you really think these people care about electricity bills and snacks. The amount of light bothered me cuz BILLS but I doubt they even care about it considering they have unnecessary expensive details on the wall alone.
What type of equipment did they use? For that amount of money the screen is surprisingly small. Scrap the marque, lobby, ceiling and snack bar, give me better equipment and a larger screen. This is a 2 million dollar heist.
This is a good example of a rich prick who spends all of his money on everything except the things that actually matter in a theater, a good screen, video equipment, sound stage, and audio equipment. His "Beautiful 2.39:1 screen" is underwhelming and small compared to the size of the theater. What were they thinking when putting the TABLES IN THE CENTER? They are missing out on the best seat in the whole room. I don't see any speakers in the whole room except for the front channels, maybe the surround channels are behind the cloth walls or they are using a 3.1 or .2 setup, if not the surrounds are just aimed STRAIGHT and not even positioned towards the viewer, it defeats the whole purpose of surround channels if they aren't positioned correctly. They at least had the idea to line the walls with a somewhat dark material so they would minimize light reflection. Oh also their "ingenious audio cabinet" is from what I can see housing all of the equipment in an unventilated closed area, they are powering those huge fronts with external amps that are placed in a confined and unventilated area! I can't wait until their audio equipment craps out on them for not having a proper rack in another room or at least in a place where a fan can be ventilating the equipment. There is so much more that should be covered but I'm so stunned that someone could allow them to blow so much money on a subpar home theater in a technical aspect which has so much potential to be an awesome experience if money was redirected to the ACTUAL THEATER EXPERIENCE!
Theo Kalomirakis is the King of home theater design. I have admired his work for a very long time and in each theater I have built (DIY) in my personal home over the years I have found inspiration from his work to create more than just a home theater room- but an immersive experience. I dream of the day I can call him and give him a $2M budget to transform a space!
@@bighands69 the point is, and you’re quite the defender of this theater I’m noticing, that when one clearly had the funds to do anything, to not have optimized seating locations where the visual sight lines and the acoustic performance are ideal, is a sad misuse of the trust these customers put in their advisors.
Fluterra exactly. That’s what I just went off about. It’s not rocket science. Home theater rule #1: where do you want to sit? Home theater rule #2: size the screen for that seat. Other must-dos: dark walls/ceiling/floor. Controlled lighting. Symmetrical speaker layout. Do that and you’ve got a chance. Sit off center and now your view of the image is wonky and you’re off center acoustically too. So dumb.
Well I live in a flat and the landlord might want the walls to stay cream, but for your own mansion you can paint the room optimum colours. I could just hang black paper up.
I appreciate the amount of care and attention to detail that went into this home theater. I like the blend of both 1930s art deco with today's technology and innovations. One of the best home theaters that I've seen.
This video is now at least 6 years old. The finished install could be even 7 or 8 years ol. like to know if he's updated anything to the actual hardware of the audio/video equipment or the screen itself. I really like the outside entrance/lobby look. Remember he was trying to duplicate theater(s) from the 30's as a tribute to that era. Great Job!
It's very interesting to see Theo Kalomirakis give a tour of this theater, which I remember being profiled in Home Theater Magazine around the mid-90s. The theater also got a spread in the book, "Theo Kalomirakis' Private Theaters," published in 1997. This book, as well as "Great Escapes," are lovely coffee table books full of these types of high end, themed home theaters. There are some changes I see from the original theater: the carpet in both the lounge and theater area; the seating in the theater; the screen curtain (was red velvet drapes), and the screen itself (original looked to be only 4:3) - no doubt the projector (original surely would've been a CRT), a/v equipment, etc, as well - I also suspect that the LaserDiscs in the library don't get pulled out too often. :) The book also mentions details regarding the motivation for the theater, which by today's privacy standards would probably be too revealing, so enough on that. In current times, at the end of the day, these home theaters are more about the experience and ambiance of the physical environment rather than the A/V performance, as the price/capability/performance equation of the technology has changed so dramatically over the years. Sure, you can pay big bucks for convenience features like having all your media stored on servers, but it's certainly not required in order to have an enjoyable budget home theater.
LOL, so you spent some serious coin on NOT the theater, and then in the theater you made everything super reflective so your contrast ratio is terrible b/c light gets reflected back on to the screen...sorry but a true theater nerd's theater will destroy this. Its pretty though...

Woooow! I'm impressed by the elegance of it all. 2 million worth of it. However. I agree with everybody about the screen. That should have been the number 1 priority in designing a home theatre. Then build around it. Mine cost no more than 2 thousand and has a HD picture that fills an entire wall. First select the right projector and design the specs. Popcorn machines and carpets and neon lights can come later.
Yup. Always go for THE BIGGEST screen possible. You can always zoom it down and mask it. If I was spending that much money, I'd also want Front Wide channels and total pitch black when the lights go out. Ironically, few of the most expensive theaters actually have this, as they're all about show.

I guess they started to run out of money by time they got to the screen?

@@bighands69 agree. Screen is fine. Seating is terrible.
@@bighands69 viewing distance for a 65" is 8.1-13.5 feet, those seats in the back are over 30 feet away...
@@tedstyle3798
You can view a 65 inch tv further out than 13.5 feet. That figure of 13.5 feet is the optimum distance for getting image clarity but that distance was from the era of 1080p televisions so today with 4k if you desired it you could sit closer than the 13 feet and not see pixels on screen.
It is not about maximum distance but minimum distance.
Screen is surprisingly small for such a high end theatre
It's because it's cinemascope (very wide) and it has to shrink for regular movies. I would have opted for a bigger regular screen and accept the black bars for cinemascope.
GizmoMaltese the process of using curtains to cover up the unused portions of the screen is called masking and is something the major American cinema chains including AMC are too lazy to bother with
2 mln budget and screen in 21:9 have i dont know 3 meters? 😨 its hopeless and shoul be 2 times bigger. I dont understand this .

What’s the size of the screen? You spent so much money on all other non essential things.
It's bigger than you think. The screen is a 2.39:1 aspect ratio which most movies are shot in (with an anamorphic lens), so it will actually be wider than you think. When watching 1.78:1 content the curtains are aligned to the side of the frame so there isn't white showing on the sides.

If you have this theater, screw atmos. This is Shangri-la. .
I have a home theatre and I do not buy into atmos. It simply has not impressed me. The vast majority of their film library is probably not atmos and is just dolby digital.

Yeah, to hell with everything except a large screen, acoustics and center seats.

If I had a home theater I’d need 1 seat in the center if I’m watching alone, I can’t sit off center
There is one seat in the middle but even the off seats may not be as bad as you think.
@@bighands69 the point is, and you’re quite the defender of this theater I’m noticing, that when one clearly had the funds to do anything, to not have optimized seating locations where the visual sight lines and the acoustic performance are ideal, is a sad misuse of the trust these customers put in their advisors.
All that and no center seat! Putting the tables in the center is a bad idea.

This video is now at least 6 years old. The finished install could be even 7 or 8 years ol. like to know if he's updated anything to the actual hardware of the audio/video equipment or the screen itself.
Yes I have that book, huge amount of upgrades here with the equipment. Amazing it sounds like the same home owners and this is an old video too.
LOL, so you spent some serious coin on NOT the theater, and then in the theater you made everything super reflective so your contrast ratio is terrible b/c light gets reflected back on to the screen...sorry but a true theater nerd's theater will destroy this. Its pretty though...
