Do you mean the varnish or a medium? It's possible to use an other medium than Golden but it must contain binders (it's indicated on the label). Any airdry varnish can be used over the paint.
It's anywhere between 5 and 30 ! Try to dilute your paint a bit less if you think it can help. It's sometimes frustrating to not see changes with each layer but reborning is a slow process. I usually do 4-5 rounds of the primary colors (12 to 15 layers) and 4-5 layers of mottling before seeing the kit come to life.

It was a stupid accident with a circular saw, 15 years ago. I am lucky that I just lost the tip !
