An amusing news reporter who states it is unclear why the coyote attacked and tried dragging the boy into a greenbelt. The coyote was hungry and the small boy was prey and presented an opportunity. Simple as that.
Well duh it's hungry. But maybe they meant "did the boy smell like bacon?" is why he was targeted or did the coyote have a vendetta or some other modus operandi
Who told the reporter the coyote tried dragging the kid into the greenbelt? How big/small is the kid? Who verified the story? How far did the coyote drag the kid? While I agree lots of coyotes have lost fear of people, and it's usually because someone out there is feeding them. There were lots of coyotes in a park where I lived in Southern California. They are the size of an Australian Shepherd, so not that big. And they did attack small kids, and of course they'd go after cats/dogs and other small animals. They never attempted to drag any kids, but they did bite, and there were multiple attacks. And all because some idiot in the neighborhood had started feeding them. Why? Because they had cute, fuzzy little pups and for some reason some people think, oh how cute, a puppy, instead of using common sense and saying uh, wild animal, can fend for itself. Do Not Feed!
LOL 👏👏Was looking for this comment! Do these clueless reporters also wonder about things like why people get robbed? It's unclear why this person was robbed at gunpoint in a liquor store. 🤣

A 5 year old is smaller than the coyote and there were no adults present. You are 2 to 3 times taller at around 6 feet tall. Who are they most likely to be scared of?
They're less timid here in the suburbs. I've had a few eyeball me from just a little way off - probably waiting for me to leave before they raided someone's trash - but still, a lot closer than where I ever saw them in the country.
This has nothing to do with habitat loss. We have coyotes across urban cities because they are so adaptable. They're not much larger than a racoon and go typically unnoticed. The only thing is coyotes will go after dogs and cats and on occasion if unattended, will attack a child. Always keep your kids close and under a watchful eye.
Keep your pets and your children under tight wraps. How did this happen? Some people watch too much TV and think they live in a TV land where bad things don't happen. These are the kinds of things that happen to Sheople.
Nice job Renton PD (30 min. really.) I have lots of coyotes on my property in Lewiston Idaho. Let's just say I don't raise chickens on my ranch anymore. They're very smart. But not as smart of the two cats I have left. They can see coyotes from a half a mile away and I think they can actually smell them. Then they give me a warning. You see one of my cats what is carried away by a coyote when he was only about a month-and-a-half old. There was a foot of snow on the ground, I saw this happen out my front window. I ran after him and started screaming. A couple hours later, my wounded cat crawled back to my porch. I was amazed. I fed him lunch meat on the couch for 2 days. Now 15 years later he's my best coyote hunter. Don't underestimate the power and love of animals. My property borders the city of Lewiston. A small black bear walked 20 ft from my porch. Of course I freaked. I called the Sheriff's Department. I've got animals here. They said and I quote "we'll call wildlife tomorrow morning." Useless. Protect yourself.

The mother, who apparently had by that point exited her car, immediately went after the animal and successfully got it to drop the boy.
The coyote attacked that little boy because we humans have no respect for animals. We are creeping deeper and deeper into their territories. What do you expect!?! The world is not a safe space. Know this, live this!!!!! How long before our trash bins are bear canisters?
We have people in our residential neighborhood that keep chickens and other ground birds in fenced enclosures. Those attract coyotes and bobcats which I regularly see on my Ring cameras. Every once in a while a bear shows up too. I'd prefer for neighbors not to attract these predators by keeping prey animal. Want to run a farm? Great, don't do it in a residential suburban neighborhood please.
