My first electric guitar was an American Standard Strat, which I bought in 1989. It had the TBX tone control. It was a great guitar that eventually got stolen from my apartment one day while I was out.
The pickups in the Clapton guitar are not active. They are either Lace Gold or Vintage Noiseless. Both are passive. The boost circuit is more of a built in pre amp. Players back in the day players used to put the guts from an MXR Micro Amp and build them into their guitar.
I'm building a guitar with one pickup in the neck position and thinking of putting in a similar tone control, so I can cut bass frequencies as well as treble frequencies. After your experiments with resistors and capacitors, what advice have you?
So I have a 1990 Strat plus deluxe with the red silver and blue lace pickups I am patiently waiting for your video about the difference between the resistor values change or effect the TBX tone control and overall sound thanks
Well Cool. I just had my B-day present to myself delivered today --a 1997 Strat Plus in Inca Silver. I wasn't expecting one to pop up on UA-cam today. I love the neck profile on this strat, I had an earlier Strat Plus and it had a Baseball bat of a neck i traded it off for a cool MIJ Strat with Texas Specials and other upgrades. The Strat plus sounds wonderful and crisp and clear, Love the pick ups. The only minor bump in the road is the previous owner replaced the bridge pick up with some single coil ? why I do not know, but the original bridge pickup was included. Another Bump is that it is not wired with TBX it is traditional strat set up with no tone for the bridge. I always thought this was an inferior and unnecessary way to do things. With the TBX on the Strat Plus there was Tone control for the bridge pickup right?
I used to own this exact guitar your holding it had the fender floyd rose bridge and the trem bar was the Allan wrench to lock the strings in the saddle with the ball cut off the string . Unbelievable I couldn't ever find one of these strats ever even searching it the color , fretboard lsr roller nut and that bridge down to the scratchplate its identical oh locking tuners . It was all brushed metal hardware also . Man I miss that guitar even the case that came with it was high quality. I sold mine for 1000 bucks I regret it everysay
I still have every guitar I've ever owned (except the 2 that were stolen). I started playing at 14, I'm now 56. I rue the day that I have to start the culling.
I bought a used Mexi Strat with one installed by the previous owner Best playing, lowest action Strat ive ever played, but the guy had put a duncan hot rails pu in the bridge. I hated it. I found a pickup from a mexi Strat and replaced the Duncan, and left the TBX in there, but idk how much i like it...its only wired to the bridge, and its nice having a tone control on the bridge, thats a welcome change, but the TBX doesnt seem worth the trouble. I guess when its loud and clean its more evident, but with distortion its hard to tell a difference. Im interested in the modifications when you do them.. I really wish the guy had left it stock, but he changed it...oh well. Im buying another one that is untouched, a worn vintage sunburst mexi Strat that will do what i want...recording purposes only, I just lucked into it, but the search has lasted 3 years. Ive been playing 46 years, so i know what im after, but man , a Stratocaster is THE most common guitar on the planet, but the exact right one...after playing Gibsons for 40+ years...that was tough. Cant wait to get the new one, and get on with the business of recording. And experiment with the TBX. Thank you for posting, ill suscribe

I had a friend that had the Clapton Signature Guitar and it had a 9 volt battery in it?
@@JohnJohnson-bo5svyeah that's the preamp. The pickups are passive. Like he said.
I can hear a big difference. Love it! Thank you.
You're welcome!
Thanks for the insight on the TBX tone control. Nice axe and chops. New sub.
Brilliant , just subbed, cheers from New Zealand
Thanks!!!
Thanks for the video. Did you do the mod? I’m interested in your thoughts…
Not yet!

Ok, I'll work on that.

I have a '96 USA standard Strat with the TBX tone control and I love using it bumped but with the other tone control rolled slightly off, try it.
Thanks for the suggestion! I will!
What brand is that guitar strap? Try making a YT lesson about how to get the woman tone CReam era using the TBX and tone pot using a strat guitar
Its a hand made strap I bought on Etsy. No brand that I know of. All the best.

Yes, I think we all have a few that we wished we had not allowed to get away!

Slightly off topic but why is the camera so high and why is half the frame filled with wall? Why not bring the camera down nearer to the guitar?
Thanks for commenting. Every comment helps with higher engagement.
I have a American Standard with the tbx pot. It made the treble brittle.
Yanked it.
Thanks for watching and commenting.
I did the same. Mine is 1986 American Standard.
