  • Hasiru Habba, the annual celebration of waste pickers in Karnataka, organized by Hasiru Dala took place on 26th June at Freedom Park, Bengaluru. As a sister organization, it was a delight for us at Hasiru Dala Innovations to meet, greet, and celebrate with food and music with over 1000 waste pickers, informal waste workers, and micro waste entrepreneurs who had gathered for this annual festival. It is a day for those at the very grassroots of the waste sector to celebrate their contribution to the environment, and for citizens, officials, and politicians to acknowledge the same. All of us at HDI got the opportunity to volunteer for Hasiru Habba and serve waste pickers!
Nalini Shekar, co-founder and Executive Director, Hasiru Dala, and Co-founder and Board Member, Hasiru Dala Innovations, took to the stage to speak about the latest survey done by Hasiru Dala to assess the situation of waste pickers in Karnataka. The survey has brought forward first-of-its-kind data on the socio-economic conditions of the waste picker community.
Hasiru Habba is an inclusive space in the truest sense of the term, where people irrespective of their class, caste, religion, or gender come together as a community. They danced to a whole medley of songs, completely carefree and all smiles. This was a celebration of waste pickers as invaluable recyclers and the primary, first-mile contributors to a circular economy.
The fun and joy evident on their faces was incredibly precious and we can’t wait to bring more joy for them with more opportunities to transform their lives through their hard work!
We all celebrated having experienced first-hand the results of our core ethos of Inclusive Circularity®.
