- A circuit bent Stylophone, Voice Changer toy and Violin. Entry for Moogfest 2017 Circuit Bending Challenge
Here is the Bill Of Materials
1. Stylophone (Found at Goodwill for $4.99)
2. Voice Changer Toy (Found at Goodwill for $1.00)
3. Violin and bow (found at Junk Store for $40)
4. Solder ($5.00)
5. Solid core wire ($2.00 at habitat for humanity)
6. Aligator Clips ($1.00)
7. Piezo Mic ($1.00)
8. Double Stick Tape (had some at home)
9. 9V battery ($2.00)
10. SPDT Switch ($.49 cents)
11. Red Wire (had some in tool box)
12. MONO 3.5mm audio cable ($.50 cents)
Instruction Steps:
1. Open up the Stylophone with small Phillips screwdriver and removed circuit and speaker
2. Removed pitch potentiometer
3. Open up voice changer and remove circuit and speaker
4. Wire the pitch pot back onto the voice changer with 500K Pot
5. Apply Double Sided tape to top of Stylophone keyboard circuit and place under violin fret board.
6. Cut out 9V battery compartment with hacksaw for battery holder
7. Take battery holder and solder power wires in.
8. Place battery holder behind bridge carefully!
9. Solder Piezo Mic to the 'MP3 input' on the Stylophone and double stick tape the piezo to the bridge
10. Solder one of the speakers to the speaker wires on the Stylophone and double stick tape the speaker to the boy of the violin
11. (optional) connect 3.5mm jack in parallel with the speaker connections for AUX output
12. Double stick tape the voice changer circuit board to the body of the violin, do this as well for the 2nd speaker
13. Solder the voice changer battery wires to the 9V battery holder. Add an optional SPDT switch in series with one of the battery wires (if you want an on/off switch).
14. Connect a long wire to the Stylophone stylus cable and solder a banjo pick to the end of the long wire.
15. Make or buy four 1-2 foot alligator clip wires
16. Connect end of Alligator clip wires to each of the four violin strings and then connect the other ends to the desired note of the Stylophone keyboard. When you touch the strings with the banjo pick, the stylophone will make noise.
17. Take small microphone from the voice changer and connect (solder) it to the 3.5mm audio cable. Use wire to wrap it around the mic for greater support.
Usage:
The mic of the voice changer can affect your voice or be used to pickup the sound from the Stylophone. The mic can also be used as a percussion instrument by making sounds on the body of the violin, strings and feedback when touching the voice changer speaker.
i am one of the 2012 Moog Circuit Bending Challange Finalists... and i have to say i´m really impressed. Not the normal kind of "impressed" ... im really really impressed. WOW:
Lea you are going to set the world on fire with your skills. Sound design is calling to you. I am totally blown away with your modified fiddle and your music. NEVER stop! Good luck at the Moog challenge
Peace christo
Thank you so much! It's been really fun completing this project and will definitely do this again!
I can hear this in one of those dystopian nuclear holocaust movies where society is making due with leftover technology. Great job!
Ahh, I guess Laurie Anderson would love this!
WELL DONE! You are one very bright and talented young lady! Congrats, and good luck at Moogfest! :-)
You made my day. Life seems a little brighter for projects like this. Hugs!
What the...another super talent.What a great work!
This was one of the most awesome circuit bending I have ever seen !!
Cool kid I'm vicariously proud of her
That composition was fire
Young Lady...You're Awsome !!
This is fantastic! Creative in so many dimensions.
Way to go Lia...you are one of a kind!
Thank you!
Wonderfull job! a very interesting circuit bending project involving acoustic instruments too!
I'm following you and I expect to hear great things in your future.
6:40 I like how you used the clips and the banjo pick, that's brilliant
You should upload the song on the end by itself. It rules!
At 7:34 the violin reminds me of some of the viking/medieval string music reenactment bands perform. I like it! :)
Whaaaat! That's amazing. Subscribed
Great idea and execution! Good luck!
This is amazing! I hope she goes to a great college and builds upon everything!
Thanks so much!
Go get em' Tiger! inspiring work!
I'm impressed ! This is epic stuff ! Good luck in the future Lia !
WOW :) Sehr abgefahrener Sound aus einer futuristisch wirkenden Violine. Sehr kreativ! Weiter so. Explore the sound...
Wow.. that thing is just awesome. Hope you win =)
That's amazing 👏 nice going 😉
Good work! Sound awesome.
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I like your project! I have Omnisphere 2 usb synth 12000 sound! Many choir & pan pipes :D
Red label strings? You most definitely kept it in budget. Rad!
rock on, girl! :)
Well, you're awesome.
thats pretty amazing :D
Lia youre crazy😁
Holy shit this girl kicks ass
I think you could do the same thing with a guitar..sounds like a plan.
oh it's interesting! Hi from Russia!
Woooow
The composition at the end say.. 9:45 is using some echo, maybe chorus from the production equipment, right? It sounds too rich to be purely the new instrument, solo.
This song, btw could be used in the next Highlander soundtrack.
Also, you are extremely blessed to be into this rad shit at such an early age!
If you keep Seeking and Learning, these blessings will take you many places.
kylelastname thank you! Yes, I used a few effects:)
is there a place I can find your music?
Nice project but, not cool about the Stylophone those are rare! They go for quite alot of money. Should have kept it as is.
Reminds me of Nico.
hey you is the sister of Look mum no computer ??
That tune was hella dark
Fuck yeah! Hope you enter my "stupid bending battle" 2018. Its the opposite of the moog bending challange hahah
13 and doing this, thats so cool dude. That music was composed so well too, horror film worthy.
Thanks! Yeah, I was aiming for more of that kind of music;)
Please, just don't call Ktulhu with your instrument! :)
Erich Zann, somewhere, is jealous.
The perfect girl doesn't exi...
(I'm young enough for this not to be weird)
Was thinking same thing lol
Kids like these tragically never get featured in the New York Times that insists America produces no Talent.
Very nice. I'm impressed. It is nice to see someone new getting into circuit bending. Keep up the good work!
This kids going somewhere. A modular at 13? Goddamn.
hope you are ready for moogfest, because I think this build puts you on your way. well done
Sounds like something not even Igorrr would dare to try
I'd like to hear you collaborating with Björk :)
Yo - this is great! I just picked up the same voice changer in London for a similar project. Keep making videos, they're really interesting :)
I really enjoyed this concept with the blend of classical instrument along with circuit bending. I have no doubt that we will be hearing more from you in the future.
Thank you so much!
and I see you came runner up that's great so well done and you got a sub 37...so enjoy it it's a cool piece of kit. So now you can start putting your ideas for next years circuit bend challenge.
How to turn a perfectly good violin into a nightmare torture device... ;)
I get all the details (maker's age, electronics, music) very well thus my opinion. The method is interestingly complicated yet simple. However I'd expect more useful sound from this set, especially that violin and Stylophone have nice sound by themselves, good for leading sequences, not that screechy, dissonant mixup of them all, good probably only for FX. ;) I've done my part with searching for interesting samples by making them myself, so I know what I'm talking about. Also, it's very nice to see that a young girl is interested into electronics. Cool!
Very, very impressive!
Congratulations on making it to the finals! I wasn't chosen as a finalist but will still be attending Moogfest anyway. I'm really looking forward to the judging and seeing and hearing your creation in person. Good luck.
Thanks!
Congrats again on the second place finish and winning that Sub 37. Looking forward to what you come up with next year.
Lia you are an amazing young woman. What you made shows real creative genius. Has Moog offered you future employment? They should!!! I was studying electronics when I was your your age, but I am, like you, a hands on person, and I spent my career fixing things. After two years in college studying electronics, my first job was fixing TV's...they still had tubes back then. I went from that to installing and servicing x-ray equipment. From there, I made a connection and landed the best job ever...I got into industrial laser systems and traveled to 21 different countries and 45 states installing and servicing laser welding, cutting, and engraving systems. So, what is the most fun for you...building or creating?
Hey I know this was a year ago, but if you ever feel like returning to this: the banjo pick was a very messy solution. An easier fix to make it easier to play without changing the way you play violin would be one word: aluminium foil. Take some spay adhesive and make a grounding strip of conductive foil along the neck to ground yourself. Then instead of using a pick, why not energize the strings?
Also, just a little heads up: I have the same exact voice changer, but I turned mine into a guitar pedal because I don't play classical strings :P
It has a very aggressive noise cutoff that can be fixed by soldering a jumper across the SMC capacitor assuming your working with the PCB BIC26A rev.
Awesome. Doesn't exactly make the violin sounds nicer, but that would be a really hard job :P
Super inspiring. Really well made video, too. Subscribed :)
@Lia Harmon if I can send you any relevant circuit bending mods and links on hacks, I will.... I think you can make something better than the Modulin... I think there might be an undiscovered Eurorack Module combo waiting for you... I’ll have to send you some links and bounce some ideas... soon I’ll put some vids on my channel of my fave home synth and eventually get to my violin, string, pads-ensembles patches, for your opinion-review :)
Hey Lia! Really enjoyed this video. I was dumbfounded by the song at 4:35, totally crazy! Did you make this song? If not, what is the name and how can i find it?!
Your music is so personal and interesting a kind of electronicstuttermedieval. I don´t see any future on you, I see a present, so keep making this wonderfull things.
I am blown away by this...look fwd to more experimentation. Liked and subbed.
Well done!! and that for a thirteen year old kid. I'm also very currious about your modular, maybe you can post a video with your modular? Keep up the good work.
Who taught that girl to do this stuff? What a gifted and mature person. It is difficult enough to get grown females to be interested in electronics, let alone young ones. Very impressive.
I cant believe how awesome this person is! I hope she is out there doing big things today, cuz I just saw this for the first time in 2023!
Woah.... she's the coolest.
I play Piano/Keyboards too!
Wow! Super impressive. Good luck with your entry. You should be very proud.
So amazing *_* do you have a facebook page or Homepage? I'd really love to follow your work and music.
Shit, I wish I had your skills and ambition when I was your age. I can tell you’re going to go pretty far
Subbed, hopefully still cranking out content.
I love making weird glitchy music like this. You are an inspiration!
Sounds horrible. But great! Well done.
How can she afford modular synth? (or is it software modular????)
Lia that is amazing! What an unique instrument you have created, great job!
Keep it up, and don't be depressed for not winning. You've got a great technical mind and imagination!
With your voice, it sounds like Eastern Drone Music...
$5 stylophone! Bargain!
I wish I had a soldering fan and other parts, I could have easily made this if I had the money!
instead of speakers you could mount output Jacks and save some weight and space
How TF did she find a stylophone at a Goodwill in Idaho that's some real dedication and genius
Really got me thinking about using frets to trigger connections like a stylophone guitar!
Impressed!! Good luck ;)
Lia Please Score Soundtracks For Films!!!
Thirteen! You kidding me. Good for you girl. Go go go. Looking for great things from you.
Wait so what were those drum tracks and breaks that you used during the sped-up footage? i.e. at 4:13
pupils are dialated. might fix that before making a video ?
Man, my parents would have never allowed me to do things like that.
Is there any way I could get a proper download of the song? It sounds fantastic!
That’s pretty legit you should do more videos about your stuff
Super cool, greetings from México!
I'm hearing Stravinsky in her style, anyone else?
This is incredible, keep up the great work!
Nice job. Don't ever stop hacking stuff!
Chaotic in all of the best ways possible! Great stuff!
... How is it that ive seen Bjork mentioned twice in these comments but not Nico once?
only 13 year old besides me thats geeky enough to do this stuff
Incredible!!! I hope you win the challenge!
You are going to give Steve Reich a run for his money...
