LOCS Q & A
6:05 Just a note, Dr Bronner's website does have a disclaimer that their products can cause a residue/build-up in *hard water* environments. The website says: "Hard water is very tough on our soaps, as the minerals in the water can break down our soaps and can sometimes lead to buildup or residue on the hair." So if you are noticing build up or residue in your locs, and its not related to previous product usage, it could be that the Dr Bronners is reacting poorly with your water.
3:08 - Does Dr. Bronner’s leave residue
7:02 - Rosewater, how to and application
9:58 - Should I oil my scalp if it’s not dry?
11:48 - How often should I do hot oil treatment? What’s the best oil to use? Should I rinse it out?
15:42 - Is it possible to wash locs too often? Opinions on loc extensions over locs?
18:50 - Loc envy
22:35 - How health issues affect hair? What can we do?
25:15 - Acne and oil?
29:40 - Going long periods in between retwist. Should we separate hair?
Thank you

LOCS Q & A
Ummmm the part about “loc protection” and loving your own locs was a WORD!!!
I have learned to STOP using a lot of products in my hair. Now, I only use Maringa Oil & water in a spray bottle 3-4x a week. I wash my hair with African Soap - using only Sandalwood, like every 2 months. I am 65 yrs young & this is all I can handle 😊
"You grow locs to be free" TRUTH
I have hard water. Sometimes Dr Bronners can interact with the hard water and leave a white residue. They mention this on their website. They recommend an acv rinse after if you have hard water. Love your videos Yannie
It’s crazy when I first saw this I had kinky twist in my hair. I put them in because my hair is still really short and it cold 😂🤣. However when she mentioned putting extensions over locs Lorddddd I was convicted!! Took them right out!!! I have to learn to love me at every stage of this journey. Thank you Yannie for these lessons mama!!
I have had Sisterlocs since June 10, 2000 and they promote using their products, including hair conditioner. My locs are currently waist length, but my locs have thinned out over the years. I currently take daily medications for high blood pressure for a kidney ailment. Upon my research, I found that the meds have a negative effect on my locs. Since this quarantine and watching your videos, I have given my hair products away and concentrated on doing nothing to my locs. I have not had a reti maintenance since January 2020 and keep my locs braided and in a ponytail. I washed my locs this past weekend and had not done so since March. No conditioner nor any other products except rosewater. I do follow a diet from a dietitian that emphasizes protein consumption and I take a B vitamin complex on a daily basis. I hope my locs recover their thickness following your suggestions on the videos. My monthly loc maintenance went from $85.00/monthly to zero. Thank you for the education.
You are so wise yannie .I know people started their locs more than 3 times because they wanted them perfect .I use to have loc envy .I dont no more I can appreciate others locs but I dont envy no more .I have learnt to love my own .thx for all your advice.i have ordered your items recommended .beautiful inside out .
Thank you for addressing loc envy. When I was new in the loc community I used to have it bad, but I've grown to love my hair while appreciating my loced brothers' and sisters' hair.
I've said it before and ill say it again so glad I found you. I'm from a Carribean background and all the people I've known with locs don't fuss over them they just leave them.... it's crazy now that these days there's all these lotions and potions and dos and don't videos.... it can actually be overwhelming. Keep doing what your doing Yannie keeping it real... & keeping it old school!!!
First off big up the Trini Family 🇹🇹. Thank you Yannie, I started my loc journey because of you using the two stand twist method you mentioned. Now I understand, keep it simple, wash with some Dr.Bronners every other month or so and use castor oil with rose water. Love Queen, thank you for sharing your wisdom and experience.
True talk I really appreciate your videos Yannie. I've had my locs for 20 years and I've never had problems. Before I found you I never did much to my hair so I'm good.
Thank you soooooo much. I have been loving this q and a series. It has trully helped me to care better for my locs and my children's locs
I started my locs about 3 weeks ago and I’m BLESSED to have found you. Sending peace and love queen 👑
My auntie in my head 🥰 love your posts! Hair, health, spiritual, or relationships, they’re always on point 🥰
Oh gosh this was so helpful! I’ve got to get back to the basics...I’m getting brainwashed by too many videos.
I am literally crying. This is my journey and I so appreciate it. Thank you my sister this journey is so important and organic for me.
I needed to hear it sooo much ! I'm going through bad post-partum shedding and I was ready to big chop (my 6 years bra-strap lenght locs) and start the journey Again. I'll just cover it, stop shampooing so much and stop stressing over it. Much love from France +++
We thank God for Yannie forever giving providing us with knowledge freely. 👑
"The loc community can be like a cult sometimes" this!!!
I hope we all realize we have awesome hair locs that can be manipulated and styled ANY way u can imagine!. All we have to do is take her hair care advice. And let it go! Black beauty baby! (and that's for all) ppl lol
"All that shedding. So what did it really protect?" Wow- you woke me up Sister Yannie 🔥
Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I’ve been locked for just over 1 year, but I was a loose natural before, so I was doing too much until I found your videos. Much respect
Hi Yannie and Jimmy I enjoy all your videos and discussions. It's always informative. I admire the relationship between you and Jimmy, it's great to see. Wishing you both all the Best, Stay safe.
I'm a new follower whose checked in from time to time but Yannie I LOVE YOU! You are beyond REAL and simply down to earth. I truly appreciate the knowledge I receive from you. If you NEVER hear this from other viewers THANK YOU!
Blessings to you. I'm from Trinidad. My daughter and I appreciate your practical holistic advice
Hi Yannie,
As always, thanks for the insight and broad arena of knowledge. I'm excited to hear that you all will be doing more videos, and especially the one on supplements for those of us dealing with health concerns. I am dealing with Lupus and some other medical concerns. I have noticed changes, which are from the number of medications I take daily. I also take supplements to try and counteract some of the damage from ingesting foreign, man-made substances. Again, thank you for enlightening us. Stay safe and be well.
Thank you so much Yanni. I now count you as a friend since we both the same age group and we are both Trinis. I live in Western Canada where my hair is not celebrated so I keep it covered whenever I have to go out. Since I've been listening to you I have let my locs do their own thing and I love my hair now. I am not oiling it or washing it as often and I am really happy. I lost my second set of locs last year when I had brain surgery. I shaved my whole head and have started my third set now in the most healthy way thanks to you. I love you Sister and hope we have the opportunity to meet in the future.
I love your lengthy videos. You do not talk enough “to me” I have to listen on my off days so i can thoroughly LISTEN & COMPREHEND everything you’re saying.. I learn so much spiritually and about locs.
I'm an esthetician, studying for my Masters. Coconut oil is comedogenic. It clogs your pores causes blackheads & pustules. Ironically Vaseline is NOT comedogenic, but it does trap moisture on your skin hence why back in the day parents told us to use it on our skin@night & their skin along w/our melanin & skin thickness(yes our skin is thicker than Caucasian skin) they had great skin.
Yannie, peace, this was an excellent question and answer segment. I have been following you for three years now, from your presentations I have learned how to pay attention to how my hair grows, I notice differences in when my life is going well and when times are stressful. I just want to thank you for all the information and wisdom that you have shared over the past three years that I have followed you. Thank you, peace. Glynis
Thank you Yannie for your delicious knowledge, especially relating to the hair being a jewel and the different color coordination. Bless up!!!!!
Big up to sistah you keep it so real! Dont stop keep sending these spiritual fruits for the soul! You are helping me dearly not only for my locs, but me so many other avenues of the spirit! Blessings and Much love💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾
Hey Yannie😊 I got the Vitamin D, b12, and I added magnesium. Day 3 and I feel a difference. More energy and better mood. I know in the long run my locs will benefit. I'm working on drinking more water. I'm up to 34 oz a day which is half way. Drinking a gallon a day is a challenge but worth it. Give Thanks for the info❤️
I am SOOOOOOOO HAPPY I have come across your channel #helpful
Yes we still use blue soap
See I never understood loc extensions either. Thank you for sharing, looking forward to part 4🖤
Loc envy is a real thing, she’s right
LOL...Love you Yannie. You're so funny but SOOOO knowledgeable. I appreciate you and hope to be in your chair at some point when you are in Jerzee! (1 year mid Jul 2021)
I always look forward to watching your videos, your wisdom has helped me in many ways. I'm in South Africa❤
I used the Bronners peppermint soap on my locs ONCE and it tried the crap outta my hair. I don’t have buildup at all so there was nothing to remove but oils on my scalp. I will continue to use it as a clarifying shampoo but not as my routine wash. I have to wash my hair maybe 2 a month due to dry skin. My skin has to be clean and moisturized or I will itch like crazy! Anyway, Dr Bronner is the TRUTH but it can be harmful also because of how powerful it is.
No! It was a very clear video. By the way, I started my bee pollen yesterday...I'm excited to see what it can do for me!
Yes the braids with extensions always pulled out my hair when I was a loose natural. It was one of the reasons I locd my hair.
Hi I am a chef 15 years. 90% of the time i cover my locs with satin loc soc. Over the 2 years I have noticed my hair is thining out. Especially the front of the hair. I am not getting natural sunlight and fresh air when I am at work because its covered. Are there any suggestions?
Can you add the product links into your descriptions below? It's so many options out there. Just want to make sure I'm purchasing the correct ones.
Hi Yannie I just found your channel. Thank you for the information on locd hair
Funny that you talked about blue soap. OMG I remember using that back in my younger days 😂. Not Trinidadian 🇹🇹 but Dominican 🇩🇲. Also, would you recommend mixing aloe juice or gel with the rose water and vitamin e?
I like watching and listening to you
Yannie you can try scrub your face with a moist rag twice a day...then rub paw paw skin on it after eating it...you can leave it for as long as you can...after washing it out, rub a light oil on your face while it is damp
Paw paw? Really? I'll get some this week. Thank you for the info
Peace & blessings Sistah Yanni. I am transitioning from having long thin Locs (9) yrs, to wanting & having freestyle (3 months now). I just took sections of my hair & put rubber bands around them. Well, my hair is thick so it didn’t take long. Should I cut off the long thin Locs and continue free style? Or, can I leave them alone and just continue the free style? I love you & I appreciate your wisdom! One Love, One peace, One unity 🌸❣️📖
What do you recommend for maintaining and keeping bleached locs as healthy and moisturized as they can be? I bleached 2x and don’t plan on bleaching or dyeing anymore.
I have had my locs bout 2yrs and last year I had a hysterectomy and since about then I've had some shedding and thinning I don't get my hair done often and the only product I use is the castor oil and half rosewater and vitamin E
Hello Yannie,
I've tried to use regular castor oil, JBCO and since watching a recent video Haitian Black Castor oil. Each one only list one ingredient. Each time i apply it my scalp itches. I've read that this is because toxins are being pulled from your scalp and the itching will subside. What is your opinion on this?
We all love U and appreciate you❣️ Blessings to you & your family😊
Blessings Yannie. I am 8 mos loc'd. Only shampoo and oil my scalp. However there are lumps all over. Some say palm roll it out others say different. In your experience, what are the lumps and what should be done?
Yannie I really love you , you tell it as it is ...no dress up just pure and ture. Pls take a trip to London both you and your king .
I had locs several years ago and am so excited to finally start my new set soon. I will two strand twist and let her do what she does. My biggest concern/question is how to "twist" or maintain the new growth.
Hi Yannie, I'm learning a lot from your videos:) Im 10 months locd and retwisted 3 times and have been washing my hair about every 2-3 weeks. I am leaning heavily toward no retwisting and way less washing at this stage. How do I mantain a rounded shape without retwisting??
I work in health care with the elderly people, in light of the current situation with the covid 19, such I wash my hair a little more often like once a month due to the fact I can't cover my locs in the nursing home I work at? I hope this isn't a stupid question I'm just curious because of the covid 19 being considered so contagious and it's said virus can live in the hair.
Thank you Yannie for your information it's so helpful to have you and your husband
Woyyy a blue soap Trini here! 🇹🇹😂💃🏾... love and blessings Queen
Thawadah (Thank you) Using this for my natural hair and its not locked. Going to do this, braid up my hair and wrap them for a loc'ed look .
Your Beautiful....Thank you for sharing knowledge with us all. GODS PEACE!
What if you don’t want to keep your hair covered all the time?
Do you recommend scalp massages for locs health or should you not put your hands in your hair except for washing or adding oils?
Hello Ms. Yannie. I currently have loose natural hair and will hopefully be getting my microlocs installed before the end of the year. I use aloe juice and aloe gel from an aloe leaf on my hair right now and would like to know if I can use it on my locs when I do get them. Thank you for your input. Have a blessed day.
I thank God for you. Yannie.
You PREACHED this again!!! 👍👍👍
Fire myself for being loud an cussing? Hell no I love that shit.🤣🤣🤣
Blessings Queen, I've started my journey about a year ago, had some dry scalp issues, problem is the dry scalp gets backed up in the locs and becomes embedded, doesn't look good at all, Question: How do I get it cleaned out please? Thanks Queen, love and blessings from Dominica🇩🇲🇩🇲🇩🇲
My parents are GT. Still use the blue soap for clothes
I'm about to get some dragonball z looking dreads, they gone be bad ass. and take all her advice 😁
I'm glad you said that, rock your hair how YOU want 2, not for them.
Yannie, can you please give advice for starting locs when you have extremely thin hair?
So many gems! Thank you Yannie! ❤️What advice do you have for people who want to semi-freeform but have hair that grows away from the loc?
As a trini I can say she's absolutely right about the blue soap 😂
What about Aloe Vera Water? Or Aloe Vera Juice?
Instead of using the apple cider vinegar and baking soda wash to deep clean your locs what are the best things to use?
Your information is extremely helpful. Thank you thank you thank you
Yannie can you and your king please make a video on love ,culture and your religion belief reflects on your locks .you seem very spiritual, remind me bit of my nan
I was just thinking where I can buy legit vitamin that aren’t from amazon
Thanks, looking forward to the next video
Hi Yannie. Blessings to you. Been loc'd a little under a month. Please, is there a substitute for rose water. You recommend this and vitamin E oil a lot. Please help!!! You're doing a great work.
About the half and half concoction video, how often do you wash your hair after you put it in your scalp or do you leave it in?
My locs won't fit in my shower cap anymore. What do you recommend? A tam you don't mind getting wet, or something else?
Yannie, thanks for sharing
Yannie, I have thin base dreads. How can I do them. Help don't know what to do.
You're videos are super helpful 🙂 i'm almost 4 months into my loc journey. some of my locs are smaller should I combine them to prevent thinning in the future or will they thicken up over time?
I still have blue soap and carbolic
Hi! Blessings to you first off. Second, what locking method would you suggest for fine loose curly hair? Only the front of my hair is this texture. The back is more course and is locked. The front is having a harder time so looking for options.
Hi Yannie recently started to watch your videos as I have time now and I must say you are very informative . I appreciate the knowledge I didn’t know then and I’m glad that I know now... keep up the great work blessed 🙏🏾.... my question is the mixture for dandruff how long will it takes to see results and how will you know if the mixture is working?
What do you think of aloe Vera juice mixed with water spritzed on locs?
How can I book and appointment when this corona is done?
Hello yannie, a new subbie.. if twisting and palm rolling is not encouraged to maintain locs, how do I maintain it without damaging
Thank yannie for your Q&A.Just a few months into my loc journey (9mths) If you not covering your hair at all should you oil and use rose water & Oil mixture more often? I don't have silk pillow I have normal cotton pillow slips. I cannot cover my hair for too long I need that air to pass through my scalp .
Use a net-like fabric in will allow airflow yet protect your hair
What's the best Rose Water should I buy?
Why is is important to use water to loc your hair
I have little balls of hair at the end of my hair that are literally are hanging by a strong of hair, should I pull them or leave them?
