  • Beginner Cyclists Guide To Getting Fit
For one reason or another, many people are getting on bike for, perhaps the first time in years, and taking up cycling. For these beginner cyclists, this may be quite intimidating as they believe that cycling is incredibly hard and they feel that they are not fit enough.
Well I am here to tell you that cycling is not as hard as you think, especially if you want to improve your fitness.
The mistake that many beginner cyclists make is trying to push themselves too hard on the bike too soon. When they inevitably feel exhausted, they mistakenly think that this is what cycling is all about.
In this film I give my tips to beginner cyclists on how they can get fit the easy way.

I was an incredibly fit UK Police Armed Officer....I had a minor operation, caught a virus, and three years later can hardly walk, fatigued and in constant pain....I am watching these videos in the hope my brain might relent and let me get on my bike again....I never believed ones body could "eat itself", but thanks to this channel, it keeps me entertained, and motivated to be out on the road again, some day....

It's important to do strength work regularly. In my 70s , I ride every day. Rarely have a bad day or tired legs after nearly 800 straight days and 33k. After every ride I stretch and do a solid core , arms and legs strength. Without it , I could not do this. Average mileage over 40 each day. Hills everywhere. I'm older slower but having fun. Riding thousands of miles on gravel. Each day is an adventure😎 Leonard is right over the target . Well done Leonard👍👏🙏

I will be grateful if you inform me: 1- how much miles a day , you ride when you start biking.
2- for how long you practice the biking. It is on the last 3 years? Thank you in advance

ANYTHING (any form of activity) is better than watching TV from sofa with full bowl of popcorn.
There is no ZERO/ONE switch: fit/unfit. People very often say: "I cannot do it because I am not fit".
Actually it is opposite: "you are not fit because you do NOTHING".
But most of the people will NEVER change - sad? I am not sure - we are all free creatures ;-)

May I add something insightful..... If you're starting to cycle, your fitness builds OVER TIME. I cannot emphasize to keep this in mind, cause even though a year has passed and you are still being passed or dropped, keep a journal, and you'll see that you're indeed getting better. Finally don't compare yourself with others. I know a Category 3 rider in the US, who passes most everyone. He as passed and dropped on a training ride. Turns out the people that passed him are Cat 1 riders. So, don't compare and continue, no matter what.

It does get easier I can personally validate this statement since starting in late March. I am yet to hit 3 months and I can already see my riding stats improve as well as how I feel physically at the end of rides. You were right from the get-go - it does get better

Every couple of days is a challenge for me so I'm aiming for twice a week now and hope to be up to 10 miles in the next two or three weeks then onward to 15 and 20 which is where I was a few years ago when I cycled regularly.

So many thanks for giving me the push to get a new bike and get back out there !!

I love that old mountain bike. I have an old steel US made (yeah, that old) mountain bike in the garage. It was my wife's; but she just got a new hybrid, which she enjoys. So, the old mountain bike is going to my assistant at work. She has been wanting to ride. It needed more work than I expected -- new shifter, new tires, re-true the wheels (I don't do that), new peddles, and general cleanup. But it is going to be like new. So, one more rider on a bike.

My bikes store memories . I've had memorable days on all of them. Ride , explore, enjoy the adventure. Bikes are freedom, to move , to improve your wellness. Once used to riding , not much compares . I ride every day rain or shine .

Thank you for sharing with us your knowledge and long experience about riding bike and all what concerns it. Easy to understand even for a non-anglophone ( me 🤗), easy to practice after watching , easy to see the progression. Looking forward to your furthermore videos, which are very very useful. After a bad car crash ten years a go, I lost all my fit and fun doing sports . I start moving 3 years a go, but I never practice with regularity and continuation. For that each time I've to restart as a beginner. From a couple of mounths , I'm trying to don't stop for more than a week. I fail most of time, but I persist and fight the monster ( =hard and long burn out ), everyday. Everyday is a big challenge, and I really hope to kill the monster, on my 10th car's crash birthday , next July 25th). I'm 62 y.o and I miss the magical feelings that practicing sport gave to me earlier before the car accident. Thank you so much Mr Leonard. It a real pleasure to follow your videos.

Very well described, the difference between fitness and strength although intertwined. Health is another discussion. The geart rate to age is pretty accurate but i find strava sets it higher and ive gone eadily 10 bpm over my supposed max rate.

Thank you for the encouragement. I live in Brighton and i’d love to be out on the Downs but to do that at the age of 51, I would like to get an eMTB, just for a little assistance in getting there and back. Therein lies the problem. £2,500+ for a bike, is out of our budget....and everywhere is sold out. So I feel a bit stuck. I also would like to have someone with me who knows what’s what, so I get the right bike...when we can afford a couple of grand.

Great vid Len! Lot's of new riders out here in SoCal. I went to my LBS yesterday it was nearly sold out of bikes. It will be interesting to see how many will stick with it in my neighborhood and surrounding communities. I say this because it's hilly with climbs everywhere. (I have 7000 meters of elevation so far for May) You really have to make fitness a goal if you're going to enjoy riding around here. Otherwise most these new riders will burnout in a few months. Ride on.

Amazing! Everybody is doing tips for beginner cyclists about now which is great since we all have a slightly different perspective. Thanks for sharing that bit about how we all have something we're coming back from. Vulnerable, human and totally genuine. If I may offer a tip for keeping up the cycling year round? That Cyclone you're riding would make a great grocery getter. Add a rack and panniers with a trunk bag to the back and you won't have to carry it on your back. How far are you from your shopping? I'm lucky that we're just about 2 mi away so we can sneak in between the rain in the winter to get our groceries. I usually join some sort of non-cycling weekly or monthly club event in the winter that I have to cycle to. Again, keeping it about 2 mi away so I can sneak in between showers, or even snow...

Hey Leonard. This is your BEST video yet. This is everything that I experienced for the first 2 years of riding. AND, for the first 2 years of riding, every group ride I went on I was last. I'm also very glad that you point out individual performance as everyone is different as opposed to other Experts whom say follow these few things and you will be riding the Tour de France by the end of the year. I hate when people that say stuff like that, especially when it comes to me. Leonard: "Anyone can improve their fitness, and it won't be as hard as you think." Me: "I'm not to sure about that as I can think really hard, Leonard".

Got my arse back on the saddle a few months ago. Tackling hills I dreaded and now winning. Last ride was 40km with 1000m of climbing and I think I did ok for a heavy bloke. 15.5 stone. Averaged 23kmh which I thought was ok until I saw your 100km under 4 hours goal for a Sportive. Looks like I need to slowly up my game! I will do that and love it! My 11year old Trek 1.5 is loving the attention, but I might have to swap out the old Cassette. It’s a bit tough when the road hits 1:7 and steeper!

I have been hitting the bike paths here in Minneapolis/St Paul this spring pretty hard since I am out of work for a short while and can get in a good 20 miles a day going up into the cities and back. This past week I have added a new twist to my riding . Since our cities are now WAR TORN ! and burning daily from the rioting I ride into the hot zones and explore the total damage and fires. I met a fellow biker the first day and was warned about all of the glass and watch my tyres ( is that how you spell it ) Good advice. I can cover a lot of ground with my hybrid bike and love it. I have seen the devastation up close and just as close to watch looters filling their bags with loot, unbelievable ! Problem is that you suck in a lot of smoke and once the tear gas cloud switched direction on me. I am an urban explorer and like to take photos on my rides and ad to my bike workout log. Today I stuck to a leisure ride along the Mississippi away from the action and had to get in before the curfew tonight when the big clash between the Police and fire bombers /looters is expected to happen. The Big Event ! I even forgot this week there was still a virus lock-down happening . I'll be riding tomorrow for sure, it takes away some of the anxiety. You just can't make this stuff up.

Your usual good sense, though you led with lots of video of people very unlike you on bikes,
Until, of course, your friend with the low seat step through bike came into frame.
I would recommend a calendar as the first purchase, rather than the HRM, and maybe a free mileage app for your phone.
(Though, I always prefer shopping for things to hang on my bike , to riding. and have more sensors than a Tesla.
The simple things that you always have with you, a stretch of familiar road,
a sense of how your legs feel and of how winded you are, are great training aides, cheap, accessible and won't ever end up in a forgotten drawer.

Great job Leonard! You have been my incentive to rejoin the cycling world after another Canadian winter. I have been biking for about three weeks now even though the weather was "rideable" weeks before. By watching you all winter I finally returned to cycling. At 78 it's far too easy to sit back and do as little as possible. Being quarantined I had two choices. The first was to feel sorry for my circumstances, lay back, watch television and eat. My wife had bought one resistance band for me four years ago which I never got around to using. I started using this band with surprising results! When I got back to biking, it was obvious that my cycling actually improved. I now believe that I'm in better shape at 78 than I was at 28. I'm better able to take hills now than before. This tells me that between watching my diet (Atkins) and working out, I'm making great gains! (Mike Scott, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada)

Also, you can ride a bike just to go places and do things and get fitter all at the same time.
No lycra or special equipment required. I have a hybrid bike, helmet and a hi-vis vest and wear ordinary clothes although I would choose items more suitable for cycling.
If you work four miles away or need to go to the shops just get on your bike and ride at a moderate pace that suits you with minimum effort or sweating.
As you find it easier, then you can either ride a little faster or go further. I ride almost entirely for utilitarian and commuting although sometimes I do take the longer way there and back. Occasionally a 30-40km detour just because I'm in the mood.
Always carrying luggage or cargo of some sort and regularly pull a trailer, I did a weekly family shopping yesterday with one. I average 30-50kg loads but have had over 70. Granted that was a a bit of a workout for 6.5km on the way home.
But you can push yourself more and get fitter too without having to even think about performance or "goals" in an athletic sense.
And this is no disrespect of Leonard's more athletically oriented cycling.
I just try to find every opportunity to leave the car at home as much as possible and to take the bike instead.

@@jollygoodvelo Thanks for the response Leonard, I wasn't expecting one.
I'm never going to buy a road or MTB mysel but I really want to see more people out on bikes.
The more people get out on an ordinary bike in ordinary clothes to pop to the shops or go to work or school, the more the authorities will need to put in more infrastructure and services to cater for them. Which will mean more people will use bikes.
We want to get to where the Dutch and Dane's are now.
And if you watch any of the videos from these countries, you see millions of people out every day riding ordinary utilitarian bikes wearing the same clothes they are going to wear all day at work or school.
Those are the people and the cyclist's your local authorities pay attention to and build infrastructure for.
So wherever you are going, if it's practical or convenient, get there and do whatever you have to do on your bike.
The more people cycle even on roads with no paths or lanes as I do 98% of the time, the more traffic becomes familiar with cyclists and the more they give cyclists more room and respect on those roads.

My goal is perhaps do the Isle of Wight randonnee course or perhaps cycle the trans pennine trail. Cycling seems to work the glutes really well and I think there have been improvements in my running times as a result.

There is only so fast that you can pick up your foot and put it back down as you are limited to what gravity will allow. This limits your stride length. Stride length is also directly related to your speed. Using a bicycle as a lever to increase your stride length also allows you to put more force into the lever than you could with your feet to the ground. No matter how hard you stomp your foot down on pavement it will not increase your speed. It will more than likely result in your feet going numb. But not only stomping down harder on a lever on a crank arm will increase your distance, it will also increase your speed. There is only so much strength building you can get from running. It becomes near unlimited on a mechanical device.

I am returning to cycling. I have hills where I live and I can't ride up them. I have managed many years ago. I am currently recovering from a broken arm and the doctor says I can do more now. I've been out on my bike a few days now. I just get off and walk when I need to. It's fun and yes I am getting sweaty but a shower after that is wonderful. My energy levels have picked up after being inactive for months recovering from injury. My short term goals is to ride the whole 3 miles round trip to shop. I'd have a break 1 and half miles at the supermarket. My long term goal is 4 miles to my work place with room to do the 4 miles back at hometime. I've already go my routes planned out.

I ride about 10 miles a day in my lunch hour... the thing is, my heart rate is always around 150 (average) for my ride... this doesn’t feel bad, it’s just normal but your video suggests 110... do I need to slow down? I think the idea of "beginner cyclist" is misapplied. Unless someone truly hasn't ever ridden bikes as a kid, and that would be extremely rare. For instance in 2017 when I acquired my first bike (actually two that year) since 1988, I never felt I was beginning, only beginning again, or restarting. Part of that was having borrowed a few for days or weeks in the intervening time even though it had been 18 years since the last time I had one lent. Once for a month or so after knee surgery when I couldn't run. Within two months I felt I'd gotten back all the skill I had before, although one small kid trick I'd forgotten about cost me a broken rib. I didn't have to pause the riding over it though. It was just some pain for a couple of weeks.

on 8:30 your seat position is bit high. Rule is that you should have straight leg when you touch pedal with your heel, and about 15 degree bend when you ride. It's important to have this bend so that your hips do not rock back and forth and also so that you don't get knee injury. On 5:22 seat is way too low, and it'll when seat is that low, it'll cause tremendous pressure on knees if you'll ride for long period of time. Now he reads and researches power meters, and discovers HRMs are effectively useless and power pedals are way more accurate. Then, imagine said rider gets a pair of Garmin power meters, gets everything connected and does a 20k effort in about 90 minutes. The power pedals tell him he burned a whopping 140 calories. Imagine the heartbreak. Almost makes someone want to just give up. Especially when people saw it is about the effort, not the reward.
