  • This is the first episode of a grapefruit growing series. I got off to a smooth start in a growing medium that could be around 95% sand, 5% clay soil, or maybe an even higher percentage of sand. I fertilized once with after 4 weeks with chemical fertilizer supplemented with crushed vitamin powder to provide for complete nutrition. I watered sparingly in the first 75 days. My seedlings only got direct sunlight in the AM hours, and there were many cloudy days.

    For basically any citrus a great way to get them started is to soak them 12-24 hours in warm water (can mix with hydrogen peroxide).
    Floating seeds won't be good for growing, sunken ones will be.
    Then you can peel off the seed coat and plant them or start them however you want. I use black gold potting mix cause it's well balanced and replicates natural soils. Sand compacts too much and can damage roots and clay can clog the pot and make areas more waterlogged, both sand and clay can block off oxygen/air as well. Plus the organic matter helps release more nutrients to the roots and promotes a healthy micro-biome.
    I usually use a weed mat or geotextile fabric as a top layer and put sand on top to protect the soil from pests.
    I also mix in mosquito bits to release beneficial bacteria that kills bug larvae. Minimal pest issues.

      I’m gonna try a bucket with dividers. Potting soil, sand and regular dirt from outside. Remove divider , and plant plant in the middle. Do you think I’ll have a healthy plant?

      I still have the mango but it's struggling mightily. It looked like it was going to sprout new leaves but they burned to a crisp. There are new shoots lower on the trunk, I hope those work out.

    I don't know if I did it right but I found a big seed and wrapped it in a damp paper towel and in the sun I'm still wanting for it to sprout but I'm excited for it😁🌱🌳

    I did this but instead of sprouting it in a sip block bag, I put it just in soil kinda near the top. I completely forgot about but I looked at my window seal and it grew 4 to 5 inches. I didn't water it for a month. It was a very big seed so that's probably why. I have another one growing too. It's starting to peak out of the soil. I hope it lasts, I feed it every 1 to 2 days. But yeah, the second one I grew is starting to peak out of the soil and the first one is growing really quick. Its pretty firm actually. But I feel like I should add more soil on the top because if u took a tiny bit of soil out from the top u could see the seed and i need to move it to a new pot. It's just in a 8 inch Mason jar. Any tips? How should I switch it over?

    Do you know you are missed when you stay away for a long time.
    I have a suggestion. Dollar Tree sells round plastic plant saucers/dollies with little wheels built in, which makes it easier to rotate your heavy plants so that one side is not always facing the sun. Especially yours with so much sand must be very heavy. Anyway they usually only are available for sale in spring time . I got them for my tangerine trees which are pretty heavy. It also makes it easy to move them out of the way sometimes.

      Hey Pat, thanks for the kind words! I have been really busy in 2021 with my career and other interests, but I will always look to make some videos when I have the time. Yes, my pots are heavy with all the sand. I did buy a round metal dolly with wheels. It rusted after a while and I think I threw it away during the most recent move. What I really need is some land to plant things in...

    • @PatC.
      @PatC. 3 роки тому +1

      @@TheMelvinWei The dollies at the dollar store are plastic so no rust. I've had mine 3 years now. Maybe your landlord would let you have a small plot in the courtyard Wouldn't it be nice to grow something with pretty flowers like passion vine with the added bonus of free fruit for all the tenants!
