What is a Toyota Camshaft Phaser or Camshaft Actuators? | When to replace a cam phaser.

What does a camshaft phaser do? How much to replace a camshaft phaser? Many modern vehicles have variable valve timing, or VVT technology. Camshaft phasers or camshaft actuators simply adjust the position of the camshaft (phase) in relation to the crankshaft. In simplistic terms, the camshaft actuator is either advancing or retarding the engine timing. This technology improves engine performance, reduces emissions and increases fuel economy.
Camshafts simply open and close engine valves. A timing chain or timing belt connects the camshafts to the crankshaft. The camshaft and crankshaft turn in unison. In a traditional engine (such as your lawn mower or maybe your first car), the valve timing is fixed. Modern engines with variable valve timing can adjust the camshafts, thereby changing the valve timing. Most vehicles up to this point use oil pressure or hydraulic pressure to control the camshaft phaser or cam actuator. To allow the system to work, an oil control valve, or VVT solenoid, is used to apply pressure to a specific cam phaser. This is controlled by the vehicle's onboard computer. You'll typically find one oil control valve for each camshaft phaser.
A bad camshaft phaser, or camshaft actuator, typically results in the check engine light illuminating. The engine will run a bit rough and sound unhealthy. You may hear a rattling noise. The cost for each camshaft phaser is roughly $350. The labor to replace one could easily be over $1000. Your best bet is always buying OEM camshaft phasers or actuators. Going aftermarket could be a big mistake.

So many people fail to realize the importance of regular (not extended) oil change intervals.
Manufacturers claim outrageous oil change specs that only work to do damage to the engines.
The next thing is, if your vehicle has a problem, don’t wait to get it fixed. It’ll only cost you more in the long run.

How did the original fail?

As mentioned, the engine had a trouble code for P0011. Once I checked the engine timing I noticed immediately the cam lobes were too far advanced. That told me the cam gear was locked in the advanced position.

How long did it take to swap out? My guess 4 hours. Stealership would've changed you mucho denero $$$$$

Maybe 1.5 hours to remove and another 1.5 hours to reinstall. Fortunately, the FJ engine is user friendly.
