Photographing the Alabama Hills at Sunrise (Day 1) | Desert Landscape Photography w/ Canon 5DSR | 4K

- On my first day at the Alabama Hills high desert, I woke up before dawn to hike to an overlook for sunrise. Hoping to get a clear view of the Mt. Whitney, Lone Pine peak, and all of the other snow capped mountains, I was a bit disappointed to see strong storms rolling in and covering much of the mountains.
Somewhere in the back of my mind though, I thought that just maybe some early morning light might creep in underneath the storms and make the mountains and storm clouds glow. I decided to stick around and, despite the strong winds blowing down off the Sierra mountains, set up my 5DSR, and took some photos through golden hour.
I hope you enjoy this first day video of my Jeep-camping road trip to the Alabama Hills! Make sure to stay tuned to the very end for the reveal of two panoramas from sunrise. Also, subscribe to the channel so you don't miss Part 2 of the trip! The weather conditions were different, but in the high desert, no sunrise is a bad sunrise!

Wow! Awesome experience and great images!!!
Thank you! It was a great morning for sure.
Stunning images. I am headed to Alabama Hills next month for the first time, and am excited to see the area. Hope to get some good shots, too. Thanks for the inspiration!
That’s awesome! Thanks John. Enjoy the trip and I’m sure you’ll enjoy it 👍
You've captured some sweet images in this video. That light! And that color...awesome textures too. But really, such beautiful scenery all around; thanks for sharing. I definitely can't wait to start road tripping again!
Thank you Sarah! I’m glad you liked it. And haha yes that sunrise was one of the best I’ve seen materialize in years...very lucky to have had the chance to see it. Hope you get to take a trip soon!
Stunning images throughout. Great vlog, really well produced. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Andrew! I was definitely lucky to have such great conditions and a number of keepers. Appreciate the comment and you tuning in. best, Brian
An incredible sunrise! And nice video!
Thanks Huibo! I'm glad you enjoyed it! It was an incredible sunrise for sure.
Beautiful Pictures and great video 👏🏻🙌🏻
Thanks Wolf! I appreciate it. Thanks for tuning in!
Great video Brian. Wonderful conditions and beautiful images. I’ve been there many times but never had anything close to what you had there. So neat to see.
Thank you Scott! I keep hearing how rare the conditions were for my first morning ever there... I had no idea! Very glad I didn't snooze through my alarm. I'm glad you enjoyed it! Will be curious to hear your thoughts on Pt. 2 as I think it's a bit more like a "normal" morning in the mountains there.
I haven't made it to the Alabama Hills yet myself. Need to make it one day. Beautiful views. Sun glow in epic vistas, nice. Your comps are lovely, captured that morning moment when the sun kissed the mountains. Spot on! Your quiet moments in the field were almost ASMR like. :) thanks Brian!
Thank you Victoria! Glad you enjoyed the video. It was an amazing sunrise for sure, but the video doesn’t completely show just how icy cold that powerful wind was! Haha. Still worth it though. And wow, I appreciate the thoughts, I’ve never been compared to ASMR before! Thanks for watching, hope you get to travel there soon!
@@brianbeattyphotography thanks. The plan for a similar location is the painted hills of eastern Oregon. Hope this spring. Thanks again.
Beautiful work Brian! Made me long for great vistas and scenery!
Thank you Gary! It’s the first time in a while I’d traveled somewhere with big vistas. I was thinking on this morning how cool it would’ve been to do a drone video like some of yours! Are you heading any where soon? Thanks for stopping and watching, Brian
@@brianbeattyphotography Probably still a while before I travel. Been focusing on studio portraits. But now I'm ready for a change. When the smoke clears, my first trip is to Portugal to visit with a bud!
@@garylott4732 I hear nothing but amazing stories from those who have visited Portugal! I should use more of the lockdown time to try out portrait work as well. Thanks for the inspiration
Really like your style of vlogging mate. I'm just catching up on this video now, will watch day 2 after this. Got some nice broll and put the video together really well. The first shot it awesome, I love wide angle shots like that, strong foreground interest leading your eye in. And wow 5:55 those colours are great and you captured the light so well, really liked that last pano too. Great work mate, what wonderful colours!
Thanks Rauri! I hope you like the second video as well. It was a perfect sunrise, couldn't have asked for better. Made for a really great pano!
Brian, thank you for sharing this excellent video. The photographs are outstanding. You were definitely in the right place at the right time. What spectacular light and atmosphere you were gifted with on that morning
Thanks Craig! I definitely was blown away by how great of a sunrise it ended up being. Grateful for the experience. I'm glad you enjoyed this one, thanks for watching!
absolutely breathtaking. came for the Canon 5dsr insight (so close to biting the bullet on a used off ebay as i want to eventually print large) but stayed for this meditative and beautiful video!
Thanks Alan! Glad you liked it! This was an awesome morning
@@brianbeattyphotography i ended up getting a good deal on a used 5dsr! did some preliminary tests and i can TOTALLY see how a shutter release remote can be helpful. (details of the images when the camera is perfectly still are intense). i see you are using one in your video, do you have a recommendation for any particular model/brand?

@@AlanChunkyMunky awesome, congrats! It's such an amazing camera. finicky - but you'll grow to love that part of it too! Yes, I set it at ISO 100 and do auto shutter. I used to do the 2s timer but found that motion blur was still a problem about half the time because the resolution is just so high. It's a really sensitive camera. 10s seemed to long, so I got the shutter release. I also used to live near the coast, which makes using the timer challenging to get the right compositions. The shutter release is just better in all ways I've found. Here's the one that I use: amzn.to/45egsSJ
@@brianbeattyphotography much appreciated! Just nabbed a used remote from keh and excited to use that. I got a few trips planned soon and will definitely be putting the camera through its paces. I’ve also been really enjoying the SRaw mode for a more casual shooting experience with family photos and such. Anyway, thank you for all that you do!
Great shots Brian. Loved the shots of the mountains. All that natural lighting really brings out all of the colors.
Thanks Jason! It was a very rapid progression of color from dull grey to fully blue sky all in the span of maybe 45 minutes.
Some EPIC shots there very nice and lovely video , Makes the 5am alarm not so bad now i bet :)
Thanks Martin! And man, it's true in hindsight but that was a rough one.... It was maybe 20 degrees with howling wind and completely dark still. Not the easiest morning to do much of anything! But I'm learning that these types of poor weather days are what tend to be the best photo ops, so guess I just have to suck it up!
@@brianbeattyphotography oh yeah i know , been up many a time and though it cant be good and then sure enough turns out nice , lucky im a early riser in anyway ,
@@GrandWalkingTours Funny how that works.. I'm always thankful I woke up early after doing it, but never during!
This was awesome. Definitely another location added to the list. There's some cool astrophotography to be done there as well. Thanks for sharing
Thanks James! I highly recommend it. And yes on the Astro! The nights were so dark and clear it was absolutely breathtaking. Only reason I didn’t is because it was too windy. I tried a few but the images were impossible to keep sharp with wind gusts blowing every few seconds.
Wow that sunrise was spectacular! And your images were amazing. Personally I liked the 3 image pano the most out of the two. Looking forward to seeing part 2!
Thanks Michael! It was stunning for sure, and I'm glad the images turned out well and you like them too. The 3 image pano was before dawn too, just a long exposure of the reflected glow. The second morning in pt 2 will have much more of what I was expecting sunrise to look like!
Outstanding buddy. I’d definitely be printing those panoramic images off✌🏼
Thank you Chris! I'm looking into it. Especially the second one, just need to find somewhere that can print a 4x1 aspect ratio panorama, which I've only really seen 3x1. I'm sure I'll get one of each!
@@brianbeattyphotography mm let me think and get back to you
@@chrisnowellphotography thanks, would so appreciate any tips! I've only ever seen questionable web sites offering to print off 8x32 or 10x40. Nothing like Printique, etc. though.
I guess I could always add extra white space to force it to fit a 10x30 and do a manual trim of the final print, but that wouldn't be the size I'm looking for.
@@brianbeattyphotography that’s why I was just looking at
Was the point of tapping the beer can?
Maybe it doesn't do much... but when I was younger I heard doing that will reduce the likelihood that the carbonation would explode after getting jostled around a little. Didn't work here :)
Hey Brian, watched some awesome videos on your channel some great locations Bro!
Thanks Jon! Appreciate it 👍

Hi Brian, those images are sublime...another really enjoyable watch - looking forward to Part 2! - Cheers, T
Thank you Tony! Glad to hear you enjoyed it. Will be looking to start Part 2 this week, hopefully will have that one done soon!
Some really great shots in there Brian. Spectacular morning. Coffee first though!
Thank you Timothy! And yes... not sure what I was thinking. I know better for next time! Thanks for watching, Brian
Beautiful images Brian, thanks for sharing, awesome video work!
Thank you John! I appreciate it.
Fabulous. This is the sort of video I want to make. Roll on lockdown being over.
Thank you! Much appreciated. I think just about everyone is tired of the lockdowns and anxious for normal life!
Magic work Brian, I must go search out some Big Vistas, inspirational!
Beer in one hand whilst operating the camera with the other hand, your Scots/Irish ancestors would be proud of you!
Haha! Thanks Scott 👍. I am 80% Irish, so you could say that multitasking is in my genes
Fantastic video mate and well worth the effort you got some stunning images.
Thanks Jeremy! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Definitely a scene worth waking up early to see!
Dude killer video! Love the compositions you came up with! Also loving the channel. Stoked to see more.
Thanks Jared! Appreciate it
Great Vlog Brian, wonderful location and conditions, the Van looks like a great set -up. thanks for sharing
Thanks Tony! I’m a big fan of the air mattress, much more comfortable than just a sleeping bag on my folded down seats! And way warmer than a tent. Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it!
Nice work and great shots. I love the contrast between the brown and white tones. You captured them well.
Thank you! Glad you liked them 👍
Stunning pictures!! Now watching day 2 :-)
Thanks Kamil! I hope you enjoy Pt. 2!
Simply stunning. You captured incredible compositions and incredible light. Your work is a layperson's dream when we fantasize about achieving a professional's results. Oh to shoot shots like you did here.
Thank you! I’m glad you liked them!
I'm seriously jealous! Both of your 5DSR and your luck at the Alabama Hills! The couple of times I've been there, nothing but clear blue boring skies!
I was almost ready to pull the trigger on a 90D instead of the 5DSR since the 90D is newer and "better" and all. But your videos have convinced me the 5DSR was the right choice in the first place.
I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work.
Thanks Mike! I definitely didn't realize how lucky I got with the first morning's weather. The second day seems to be much more of the norm - clear skies where the Sierras glow as the sun rises.
The 5DSR is the best camera I've owned. Despite a little less dynamic range the the R (my video camera) and the 80D/90D, the clarity and image size more than make up for any limitations. Newer isn't necessarily better :). Thanks for tuning in!
Great episode Brian! Love the images!
Thanks! Glad you liked them! The conditions were better this morning than the second, so I'm thankful to have gotten so lucky.
Wow Brian! More stunning images in another gorgeous location. The light you captured was perfect... well worth getting up early for in freezing temperatures. But next time remember... coffee first!! 😉☕
Thank you Angie! I was fortunate to have such a great sunrise to see during such a short trip. Well worth it! And yes... next time I will have the cup ready before going to bed 👍☕️
stunning place stunning images !!!!!! GOD BLESS !!!
Thank you Juan! I appreciate it. Thanks for watching!
Everyone who photographs the Alabama Hills shoots the "light at dawn" shot we have here. For most, it comes out poorly, because of the extreme contrast or range of light intensity between the sunlite upper peaks and the foothills and intermediate valley in the foreground. Think split ND filters or layering multi-exposures in Photoshop to retain some detail in each area. Here, he was lucky to have some misting and low clouds to filter the sunlight while allowing the foreground to be opened up by its usual pre-dawn sky, which cut down that contrast problem. Nice going.
Thank you Randall! Glad you enjoyed the video 👍. I definitely felt very fortunate to have these conditions. The next day in my part 2 video was very clear and I had to manage the higher dynamic range as you mentioned. It looked beautiful at sunrise but nothing like this stormy morning 😎
Photos are simply wonderful... but beer for breakfast? Nutrition buddy!
Hahaha! That part is a bit misleading, I jumped out of my Jeep the instant I arrived at 6pm Friday night, so no liquid carbs for breakfast :). Glad you liked it Scott!
A long exposure with the clouds would’ve been amazing.
For sure! The light was changing so quickly though that I was happy to get a few different images before it got too bright
Well done Brian, Love the 2 panoramas the colours are and compositions are beautiful.
Thanks Kevin! I appreciate it
Your videos have improved just in the short time I've followed you. Fantastic images!
Thanks Chad! I appreciate it, trying to focus on video has been a challenge to get right without neglecting the photos! Think I'm getting the hang of it though.
Brian I’m a new subscriber to your channel. Those are gorgeous photos, thank you for “having me along”.
Hey Hugh! Thanks for joining. I’m glad you enjoyed this one! Hope you’re doing well, Brian
Brian Ive never seen better images, you must have had the best time at such a beautiful place...im so inspired to get the 5dsr
Thank you Perry! It was an awesome trip for sure. Cold, but fun. And there’s never been a better time to get a 5dsr! I love mine so much I actually picked up a new backup one too. At 1499 it’s a no brainer!
I can see that you are really now into sunrises Brian !! After the disappointment of the flat sunset sky who would have imagined the light show that was in store for the morning. Absolutely love it when that happens and like you say , you’re in the right place at the right time . Funny how sunrise makes you whisper too - like it’s total respect for the time if day . The images speak for themselves Brian - just stunning light and colours in a spectacular scenic landscape up in the mountains. I tend to take vertical panos with scenes like this btw and may be worth considering? Just a thought and not a criticism at all . Fabulous film and a delight to watch - all the best 👍🏻👍🏻
Haha - I knew you were going to say exactly this after seeing this video posted! I've definitely been convinced to be all in on sunrises. I was whispering too because it was so quiet, I was convinced that others sleeping nearby would hear.
You're right about the panos, I was in a bit of a hurry and just grabbed them the way I was already set up. And, I wanted to make sure I got it before the light changed! This morning was a bit different too in that I only wanted to capture the narrow band of light on the peaks. Above the pano was mostly grey cloud and below was brown dirt.
Glad you enjoyed it! I think you'll really like Pt 2 when I get around to it. Best, Brian
@@brianbeattyphotography yeah I was thinking afterwards that the vertical pano probably wouldn’t add any value and definitely looking forward to part II 😊
Good job! Thank you for sharing!
thank you!
Beautiful panorama images
thank you!
That image at 6:00 is gorgeous
thanks!
Both nice shots.
Thank you!
Wow, those were some spectacular conditions!! AH is on my list for next year. Beautiful photos Brian. Thanks 👏👏👏
Thank you Barbara! It was a spectacular show to start the day for sure. Although the wind was intense and very cold! Definitely worth it though. When are you planning to visit?
@@brianbeattyphotography Not sure when we're going. The COVID kind of put a damper on some plans. I have cousins that live in LA. They've want to go to Yosemite for years with me so I may do that in 2022, hit up AH at the same time. Thinking maybe June.
@@blivieriphoto awesome! I highly recommend both spots. It’s easy to be responsible and socially distance:) enjoy and hope you get there soon!
@@brianbeattyphotography Definitely. I'm not too worried about COVID. By then we'll all be vaccinated or whatever. I just don't have the time this year. I was actually going to go this April. I'm going to Utah for a photo conference on like the 16-19th and was going to do AH and DV before the conference, and then southern Utah after, but its just way too far out of the way. I don't want to spend all my time driving. And to be honest, there are things I can see between Las Vegas and Kanab. I've never been to the southwest so... everything is new. I'll do AH next year.
Fantastic work Brian. Gotta love it Mother Nature serves up the goods 👏👏👌
Thank you Matthew! Appreciate it.
Great collection of images you captured in 2020 too, by the way!
@@brianbeattyphotography Hey Thanks Brian. I only use UA-cam to make little vids to post on socials.

I really like how you do your videos. Keep them coming 😁🤙
@@mattorrz759 thanks Matthew!
Loved the first sunrise image; just a kiss of light on the mountains and all that atmosphere in the sky. Hard to beat that. The Eastern Sierra is some really beautiful parts of California. You were lucky to be there. Great stuff.
Thank you Steve! I'm really grateful that I set such an early alarm or else I would have missed this. It is a stunning area for sure!
Holy moly. Those conditions!!! Beautifully captured Brian. I’ve been there a few times but seen nothing as good as that.
