I go stealth camping / lite bushcrafting on my mountain bike, starting off in a populous area of West London and riding out to quiet locations just outside the city. As I ride out in normal city clothes i.e. jeans and t-shirt plus hoody if it's chilly, I take extra clothing which is useful for a number of purposes, a pair of British Army thermal ''Long Johns'' (also a British Army thermal base layer) and a light water/windproof pair of overtrousers in olive green. That way I can change into the long johns if it's chilly, covered with the waterproofs, when I arrive in location. Or if it's really cold all 3 together. If it's cold when I sleep I can keep the long johns on. Same with my upper body layers, I can change into the baselayer from a regular t shirt when I arrive in location, and layer on top of that, i.e. green hoody and/or German Army Flecktarn goretex jacket. This way I am camouflaged too as well as my camp.
I've seen a few military surplus stores sell rain jacket and pants. Probably weight a lot more. I have two types of ponchos - U.S. GI primarily for ranger roll or shelter. And the old surplus Swiss Army rain cape which doesn't blow around like a GI poncho - but totally worthless as a shelter/bivy. Glad to see you back and well Blackie !
I have a Rohan jacket which I bought a good 30 years ago. Expensive but boy, has it paid for itself! Thin, packs into an integrated pocket. Blocks the wind without been sweat inducing in the warmer rains. It is now showing its age because I have literally lived in it and it has done hundreds if not thousands of miles. Went on a walking holiday and out of the three types of groups (expert, medium and slow walkers) there were only two of us who were dry by the end of the day! I now don't mind paying a premium for my gear, because if you get it right it will literally last you a lifetime! and yes, it has been a warm layer as well as rain gear
That's a great idea for light weight and extra warmth. I have a light rain jacket and pants also that I've had for quite a few years also. They also work good for a windbreaker on those real windy days. I think Sierra Designs is still around. Would like to upgrade, hopefully they aren't outrageously expensive. 👍
Personally I've always found the lack of breathability with those sort of garments negates any point in wearing them to protect you from getting wet as you get wet from the inside anyway
Sierra is still in business however, that Adirondack jacket is not listed, hurricane pants are.. It was great meeting you, the misses and some of your fellow campers last Saturday, hopefully I will be able to attend your next outing..and that poncho is repaired..thank you for the tip.. Stay safe
Carrying both since long years with me, also old, compact, made these days by Berghaus, saved my butt several times. Wind, cold, rain.....and Germany can be nasty sometimes..... won’t miss them.
I've got a Sierra Design rain jacket that looks to be about the same vintage as what you are showing. Not Adirondack but a zip up jacket with hood. Very compact and goes in the small case or could be stuffed in its pocket. Thanks for sharing with us on the multiple use aspect.
All I have read on survival one of the pieces of information I have held on to is carry rain gear because it will stop the wind if needed. I have had a experience where a friend and I was out fishing in early spring it was sunny and cool he went in the water and did not have any extra clothing. I had a rain suit that he often told me I should not carry well it helped keep him warm that day .
This reminds me of an old joke about packing silk pajamas for a trip. It goes like this... A man calls home to his wife and say "Honey, I have been asked to fly to Canada with my boss and several of his friends for fishing.. We'll be gone for a long weekend. This is a good opportunity for me to get that promotion I've been wanting. So could you please pack enough clothes for a 3 day weekend..... And also would you get out my rod and tackle box from the attic? We're leaving at 4:30 pm from the office and I will swing by the house to pick my things up.. 'Oh! And please pack my new navy blue silk pajamas..' The wife thinks this sounds a bit odd, but, being the good wife, she does exactly what her husband asked. Following the long weekend he came home a little tired, but, otherwise, looking good. The wife welcomes him home and asks if he caught many fish? He says, 'Yes! Lots of Walleyes, some Bass, and a few Pike. He said "but why didn't you pack my new blue silk pajamas like I asked you to do?" The wife replies, "I did, they're in your tackle box". ... LOL!
I had a pair of them or something like them in the 90s…didn’t work well when we were reassigned to England…changed to Gortex stuff which was great, but not easy to store. My set like yours disappeared along the way.🙁
Trying to sleep when cold sucks! That's about all I can say. Sleeping uncomfortably in hotter climates is easier to do & easier to adjust. Now the insects in warmer temperatures is the real issue! LOL! Great Video!
Thank you Blackie. I have a beloved Sierra Design jacket that must be 20+ years old. It has survived but needs to be cleaned and water proofed. Sierra Design is still around and with time there product line has changed.
wally world has something like those haven't tried them though just seen them hanging there! by the way Blackie have you ever tried this alcohol gel hand sanitizer as a fire stater? it works pretty good in damp bitch to start conditions as an extender! a 2oz bottle doesn't take up that much room or weight in your fire kit! and i found a little tin box at the dollar store that had a small puzzle in it that fits in my esbit pocket stove and makes that gel a great replacement fuel for those fuel tabs!! i'll tell ya i hate those solid sons of bitches they're sooty as burning tar!!
Driving Big - Rigs for almost 30 years & driving through multiple weather patterns in one day, I always kept a set just like this in my backpack at all times, ...saved my butt on many occasions. I believe Sierra Designs are still in business, don't even know what brand I carried, but I never buy cheap crap & they're still in that backpack as I'm retired now. But I am putting together an emergency get home bag cuz of the times & my age, so if there still good, that's where there gonna go. Wisconsin can throw a lot of shit at ya in a very fast & unpredictable time.
Another thing I learned about that style of rain gear is that, you can tie off the pant legs and the top, after filling them with as much air as you can get into em and you have an improvised flotation device. All your points are spot on, as usual. 👍👍✌️

i do not recall the price i do know they were not cheap but they have lasted 30 yrs so yea i got my moneys worth

Sounds great!
If I remember correctly. When wearing rain gear under and over coats and or pants was hotter the the cannon balls on a brass monkey.
very true
I'd rather be hot than cold!
I use frog toggs the last about ten years even at highway speeds on motorcycle
Personally I've always found the lack of breathability with those sort of garments negates any point in wearing them to protect you from getting wet as you get wet from the inside anyway
true but on cold nights it will work in your favor in a sleeping bag
@@BLACKIETHOMAS It sure would If I carried them, but I don't as I see them as being useless as raingear.
Nice video. When you said," slicky" I actually laughed. Good job.
Glad you enjoyed
Blackie , good video , thanks for sharing , God bless !

Teaching common sense on videos...😉
I try

Believe it or not, I had that exact pair in boy scouts, might be in the basement somewhere
they still work well for me
Nice classic gear.

Blackie your are a great example of taking care of your gear

How can I be almost 60 yrs old and never heard this????? Or maybe I have and forgot? LOL brilliant.
I bought the frogg toggs version. just don't dry them in the dryer.lol.
Me too

I'm curious, doesn't this idea cause condensation?
it would if i was in a hot environment using it as a extra layer on cold nights doesn't not cause a problem at least for me
Your gathering was awesome thanks
Thanks for coming

Those look like they'd be better for the rain and the poncho I'd rather get upset like that those androids I'm going to have to look on eBay
