This Yard Needed some SERIOUS Work | Garden Restoration Episode

  • You won't believe this remarkable yard transformation video. So I went around to this customer's place to do a quote, and she basically asked me for a bit of a “tidy up” of her yard to get it looking ok for spring and summer. But when I saw the backyard, I then realised that it needed much more than a tidy up, it needed some major renovation. I did a quote, but as seems to be happening a lot lately, it was just a little too much for the customer. Once again, I offered her a deal that she couldn't refuse - a discounted price for a full yard cleanup! The young lady in question is a busy school teacher and just hasn't had the time over the winter to get out into her yard on the weekends, which is fair enough. That's where I come in, I'm here to get it back into shape, and hopefully, she will have it all under control moving forward. I spent around 12 hours on this job, with over 2 trips to the landfill included.

    FAQ's:
    Q: Where are you located?
A: I am from Hobart, Tasmania, Australia 🦘.
Q: Do you worry about snakes?
A: I have never even seen a snake in over 5 years on the job.
Q: Which equipment do you use?
A: Mostly STIHL power equipment (battery and petrol) and commercial Honda self-propelled mowers.
Q: How much do the jobs cost?
A: Sorry, I prefer not to talk about costs.
    Q: What happened to Nick?
A: Nick was offered a full-time position at his other job as a Political admin.
    Q: What happened to Brent?
A: Brent quit at the start of August 2022.
Q: Why don't you use tarps instead of bins?
A: Tarps are too difficult to move through small spaces and lift into the trailer. The same for wheelbarrows, they are only good for unloading the trailer!
Q: Why are the hot water cylinders outside?
A: I would say it's because Australia had a temperate to tropical climate, and therefore it doesn't matter that much if they are outdoors. To me, though, it seems a bit inefficient to have them outside in Tasmania with a temperate climate (coldish for 3 - 4 months per year). But that is industry standard down here 🤷‍♂️
Q: Why are you cutting so close to your employee?
A: I'm not cutting too close to my workers, they are standing too close to where I am working! All of my workers have been told numerous times about standing too close to the tools and about the hazards involved!
Q: Why do your workers do all the lifting and carrying?
A: Basically, they are employed to carry things and I pay them well, to do the job required.
Q: You work so well together, how do you do it?
A: That's the magic of editing. My workers are basically given instructions on what to do, I just edit it all out, so the videos look seamless!
Q: Why don't you have help?
A: I've had many problems with employees in the past, so now I work alone.
    Q: Why don't you have a ride-on mower?
A: Well, there are a few reasons.
    1. Currently, I don't do enough big jobs to justify spending 15k on a good ride on mower.
    2. I don't have anywhere to store it.
    3. A lot of the properties we do have fences and gates, so you can't actually get a ride-on in there.
    4. I don't have the right trailer for a ride on, considering we always take the green waste away.
    5. I will get one as soon as all of the above are solved.
Q: What happened to your workers?
A: Because the work is so hard and I expect high standards, most have quit over time. The only exception so far is Nick.
Q: What types of ladders do you use?
A: The large one is a Gorilla Adjustable Platform 150kg and the small one is a Gorilla Mighty 19. They are both adjustable.
    Q: Who/what is Jim's Mowing?
A: Jim's Mowing is a franchise business. The Jim's Group is the biggest home services franchise in Australia.

It is so nice to see someone actually gardening, pulling weeds and not cutting the grass to the dirt. Knowing which plants to leave and not denuding the garden. Nicely done,

I don't know how you find all the "distressed" yards you deal with, George, but this one was an absolute peach! It had literally everything: tree trimming, garden bed weeding (by hand, no less ... yay, for you!), lawn mowing, whipper snipping, hedge trimming. It even had a garden hose to be untangled and neatly re-coiled (I just loved that bit). Not to mention all the pallets and stuff needing a new home at a recycling facility (heh ... or the landfill, eh?)! Talk about one heck of a satisfying yard restoration ... perfect along with breakfast on a lazy (for me) Saturday morning. Just one question for you: the small trees with the red fruit ... would those be pomegranates? Thank you so much for the terrific work that you do! 😊

I love that you fix things that you find broken. in this episode it was an edge of the garden bed but I've seen you repair gates and steps too. My Dad was like you, he'd be doing work at someone's house for his job but would run across something unrelated that would only take a few minutes to fix and he would do it. People who can't (or don't know how to) fix things really appreciate it when someone who does makes that little bit of extra effort to help them out. Most companies won't come out to do such little jobs since it isn't worth their time but it's still something that needs to get done. I think it's great that you make the effort ❤

You do an amazing job, I love the way you explain what you’re doing and the plants and trees you’re trimming! Again, thank you for the detailed work you do, I’m sure each homeowner appreciates the job you do! I’m from the states so it’s fun to watch people across the globe doing the same work we do here (I’m in Kentucky)

    George, you’re a wonderful person.
I like how you tidy something, then clean up. That way cleaning up your cleanup shouldn’t be that overwhelming. What you take on just being one person is staggering sometimes. The miles you must make. 😃

I'm still catching up on all your videos. I enjoy your way of cleaning up, small sections at a time. I think it's much more fluid. Thanks again. ☮️🧚‍♀️💜 From California USA.

This was a particularly satisfying video to watch because it was obviously a garden that someone had loved when it was planted. It had good bones and just needed a thorough tidy up which it certainly got. The before and after shots were lovely and you did a fabulous job, not too little, not too much. You have a knack for knowing how much to trim, and the balance is always spot on at the end. Bravo George, enjoyed this one. 🥰👍

Absolutely wonderful result. I know you can’t do everything but it’s a shame all those bushes growing all over the fences couldn’t be removed permanently. The tree on the side of the house against the neighbor’s white wall is in a ridiculous location. Who plants a tree where there’s practically no walking room?
    Loved this video
