I had .270 round dots. Needed .230. Used a "A" drill .234 dia. Super glued the dot to the shank end. Put the drilling part in the chuck of the hand drill making it run true. Ran the drill against the belt sander without touching the bit. Finished by hand (against sandpaper on table) and used the drill bit to apply the dot in the hole. You can use the drill end to ream or clean the hole. Make sure if you are picking the best side of the dot to be the top and mark the bit for the best direction of the dot. This worked well making sure to wait for the glue to set on the bit and in the hole before doing both.

Don't forget a respirator to keep from inhaling the highly poisonous dust too.~

yeah... for some things the drill press is a must-have....but in this case you could use the hand drill with a piece of wood on the top of the MOP, as a guide, to avoid the drill tube to wiggle around... thanks man! I love your videos!

I was trying to figure how to clamp the piece down without cracking it; perhaps the wood guide on top of the abalone could be clamped, keeping *everything* from moving.

You could buy a drill press for a hand drill for less than $50. For small projects like this it’s worth it however threes a $100 Press from Skill that looks good for smaller projects. Once you graduate to everyday use it’s better to buy a larger unit.

If you want a shorter route to a flat top use a tubing cutter which is a rotary action around the tubing circumference which also comes with a reamer to clean the ridge from the inside of the tubing. I love Dremel but jeez!

Cant you just buy a 6 or 7mm diamond hole saw bit?

realtruenorth I did this and the reason it doesn’t work is the outside diameter is 6mm but the inside hole is smaller than 6mm

Too much time to make the tool. I'll just buy some dots.
