Extended Swing Arms PROS and CONS!

  • Many people see motorcycles with extended swing arms. This is basically when you make the tire stick out further on a sportbike.Usually this also includes a fat tire kit too.
Well this is basically mostly done for looks. It does however have drag racing applications too. When your swing arm is extended it allows your motorcycle to exploit the horsepower more by keeping the front end down under hard acceleration. The downside is that it heavily affects your cornering capabilities and can bring on other mechanical problems.

from a guy that owns a custom 06 gsxr 1000 with a 300 wide tire kit and 14 inch stretched swing arm. this guy has done his homework but the handling ain't as bad as most people make it out to be. yes. u do lose a bit of handling but all you have to do is put more lean into it. I was sceptical at first also when I first bought my gixxer but it's not as bad as everybody thinks . it's definitely not made for twisties though

Think it all depends on how you plan on riding. If you plan on dragging a stretch is all good. If you plan on track riding keep it short so it turns. But on the street neither will be put to full use. So either is easily street able . PEACE!

a stretch is nice if you like to race 1/4 mile at track sometimes..it makes a big difference in the start of racing, its nice to own 2 bikes ,one for street and one for track

Hey Night Rider! The longer swing arm marginally effects the turning on these larger bikes. If someone is comparing a 600 with extension and a Busa or ZX14, it is completely different. The 600-1000cc "R" bikes are very light and WILL take a lot more effort into a lean to get the same results. The Busa's and ZX14's are far heavier and there for do some of the work for you. Most often guys like myself with the large bikes are more concerned with straight line racing, and how comfortable the bike is to ride on a daily basis. ( i have a 2010 ZX14 and i am 6'-1" tall, 300lbs.) I have a 12" stretch on mine, with just a 200 tire on a stock rim. The wider tire on the stock rim helps crown the tire more, assisting me in the corners. I still felt a difference in it after the stretch but not bad at all. i was very impressed. Where i live there are virtually no roads that are "twisties" and i have yet to find a road that i can drag a knee on even while speeding. lol Most of our conners i am easily able to exceed 120mph while in the corner on my stretched zx14. I also take this bike to the track a few times a summer to do some drag racing for fun. Makes a HUGE diffrenece on 1/4 mile times having the stretch. PLus as mensioned in your vid....the look so much better....they were made to be stretched!
If you have a buddy with a ZX14 take it out for a ride....i heard you mention that u wish the Busa had better handling.....ya its called a ZX14!! lol I have ride'n both and love both bikes, but after riding them both on the same roads....no contest...ZX14 takes it!!
    Cheers!!! Ride safe!

It is more the fat tire that slows the handling than the swing arm. It is true that a longer wheelbase will make it have a bigger circle, but much less noticeable with skinny tires. Trail ride an extended dirtbike and you will notice they can still hair scramble when set up correctly. The real deal its trail. You need to bring the back of the bike up higher the longer your swingarm is. That being said most ppl who do swingarm mods do this list, extended swing arm, bigtire kit, lowered. All wrong. Just lowering it fucks the dog more than anything. The more the back end rises the shorter the trail length will be. You compensate for the arm with a long suspension travel. So the real problem is fat tire mods and improper suspension tuning.

I have a stretched hayabusa with a 240 tire and i have no issues with the curves. I can still turn sharp. Infact my friend had the same bike with a 12inch stretch and he eats up the jughandles on an interstaate. He leans so hard his knee damn near touches. You can still enjoying the handling. You gotta try it out bro. It may surprise you. Thanks for the vid anyway.

I extended my bike mainly for the look, I never had any intentions of taking it to the track. Aside from the more aggressive look the bike gains better straight line stability. As for cornering you get use to it quick . At higher speeds it does take a a bit more effort to lean it but nothing crazy. It also helps out a lot with cross winds, my bike doesn't have a steering damper. I extended mine 7.5" and my bike came with a 3" drop.

If you stretch your bike and maintain the 190 on the rear, you will be able to take corners just like if it was factory length. My bike is 8 inch over and it performs great. It took a minute to get used to the stretched bike due to the change in height. To me, it has all been worth it.

Another great vid but if you gonna do a video on stock vs swingarm bikes I would thing you would ride a bike with an extended swingarm with or without an wide tire kit. Its just like making a video on military life if you never served etc... I have stock bikes and swingarm bikes and any thing I can do on stock bike I can do on swingarm bike corning, curves etc. extended swingarm bikes doesn't automatic mean wide tire kits. keep up with your great vids though. Clint the Audio Guy
I really like extended swingarms, to a point. Nothing ridiculous. Extending the swingarm, increases Anti-wheelie, and increases stability for high-speeds & drifting. I accept sacrificing some cornering ability, for those benefits. I really hate wheelies & Endos. They're design flaws. That's the majority of the reason, why I like relatively low & long motorcycles, either modified to be like that, or like that already, like the naked version of the GL1000/GL1100 Goldwings. And those Goldwings turned into Cafe-Racers, are amazing.
And if I ever need to make an extremely sharp turn, I can always properly drag or lockup the rear wheel, and drift out of it, I'm serious. But that will take a lot of practice to be consistent & safe, doing that. And I believe everyone should learn how to drift their vehicle, car or motorcycle, because if you ever unsuspectingly slide, then you'll instinctively know how to recover, and remain in control.

I agree as well, I partly grew up in S.C./ N.C./ GA areas for some time and like Charlotte is BIG for the "drag look", i love how it looks myself and also for new riders and ladies they love it also cause its easier to balance the big bikes with the big 10" on the bike it almost stands up by itself... It's all personal preference. I have an K5 Gsxr-600 with the front and rear lowered and a 4 inch stretch and I have a 190 rear tire to have a little more contact in the rear. And it handles like a dream. Still able to get a good lean in the turns. If done right you won't notice anything handling wise. Too low or don't setup the suspension properly your handling of the bike will definitely be noticeable. I live jville fl. Everyone I ride with have some type of stretch ad still ride hard. Just do your homework.

  • @uptownsamcv
    @uptownsamcv 8 років тому +1

I extended my bike about 7.5" and it came lowered 3" when I purchased it in July. I mainly did it for the more aggressive look. I use to think the stretched look was stupid but it grew on me seeing a co-workers stretched and lowered 1000RR. So when I got my bike it just looked too plain. I think you can actually build up your turning skills with it cause it takes a bit more effort to lean it at higher speeds..
As for the handling you get use to it quick. The extra length give the bike better strait line stability . My bike doesn't have a steering.g damper so the stretch helps with the cross winds a lot. My bike is a 01 cbr600 F4i and it still lifted on me accident when I did a clutchless shift from 1st to 2nd once.
I never had track intentions with my bike and mainly wanted to customize it.
There is lots of hate when it comes to the extension but It looks so much better. Especially on older bikes like mine with a larger tail.

maybe a bit late to replay, but ye vehicles are always engineered for a reason, but that reason isn't always performance, they also take cost effectiveness and ruglations into account. not saying that a swingarm is a good modification, but aftermarket parts and settings can most definetly make the bike better for the individual need. example: full exhaust, a new airfilter and different tuning is pretty much always gonna increase the performance, but they don't come stock with parts as good as those aftermarkets ones, cuz of regulations and production costs.

1:25 imo negatively effects it in ways that wouldn't matter much to the average street rider that likes to go fast straight. Bc the riders that aren't cutting corners and curves like a racer won't really be as effected bc they're just simply casually leaning and turning, not racing. So not as much of a big deal to the casual drag racer on the starights. That's just my thoughts tho

I HAVE A 2001 GSXR1000 STOCK. LOVE IT THAT WAY AND NOT GOING TO MODIFY IT. SUZUKI SPENT ALOT OF MONEY AND TIME IN RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT TO MAKE IT AN ALL AROUND PERFECT SPORTBIKE, SO WHY FUCK WITH IT.. TO EACH HIS OWN THOUGH. PEOPLE LIKE WHAT THEY LIKE.

+clusterfuk3 thats a well stated opinion forget the widetire extended swingarm bikes and talk factor size tire extended swingarm bikes. I'll take my extended swingarm r1 or zx10 and do anything you do on your stock base bike. I'll out corner you or out ride you in curves

My CBR1100XX is stretched 4 inches with a custom arm. Handles roughly the same as stock. As long as the stretch isnt crazy (+7 inches), it should not hurt the handling. I'm not a fan of the fat tire look either, at least nothing bigger than 240.

Hey. If you want to increase your handling, look for lighter wheels, available for your Hyabusa. Magnesium or Carbonfiber. I want to support my country, but I haven't found a U.S. company, that makes Carbonfiber wheels. There's Tekarbon.com but they don't make Carbonfiber wheels. There are European and a South African company, that makes Carbonfiber wheels, but I didn't bookmark them, because they aren't from the U.S., sorry, you'll have to find them yourself. As for magnesium wheels, I haven't looked for those yet. I hope this helps, later.

Don't get me wrong this video is very informative about customizing bikes. But it doesn't really apply to me just yet because neither of my bikes will customized. They're all gonna be stretched because I'm gonna have them rebuilt and restored for both street riding and drag racing. All the music and lights and all that other bullshiggity will not be on my bikes. Only thing you're gonna hear when I'm heading down the highway is the roar of that expensive @$$ drag racing engine that I'm gonna have installed on my bikes
