I never thought I would find videos on this game!! I first played it ten years ago when I was thirteen and it made me fall in love with games and Chopin! To this day he is my favorite composer. I related when you said this game is really close to your heart, it found me at the right time and heavily resonated. So glad people other than me know it exists and loved it as well❤
It always warms my heart when someone finds this video and gushes about how much it means to them. It was the whole point of the video and I'm glad many people resonate with the game we all love. So glad to hear you enjoyed it and lets keep on loving the game we love
Love it. I loved this game when it came out, no one s playing it, no one had heard of it, no one understood why an rpg about a composer was great. I always felt bad for the developer taking a risk and not being rewarded for it. There don't seem to be that many great jrpgs in the ps3 (especially when compared to PS1, 2 and 4) Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go play this again for the.. Fourth time. Thanks so much, you've earned my gratitude and subscription.
Yeah this was a game I randomly saw in a EB Games (I guess Gamestop now lmao) and saw anime looking character and that Bandai Published it and since I was coming off of Tales of Vesperia and Magna Carta 2 I was intrigued. I visited my grandmother for a week and went to a local video store where they had the game to rent so I did. Beat it in three days cause I couldn't put it down. Making this video was for people who loved the game as much Is I do and it still warms my heart to see people still finding this video and sharing their experiences with it. Love this community so much. So thank you for all the kind words and I hope you enjoy your fourth playthrough haha. I play it almost once a year myself so I totally get ya.
@@MinimattReviews dude!! Magna Carta 2!! I had played the first one on ps2 and 2 had been out a couple years when I found it. No idea it existed. One of the handful of jrpgs on 360... Next to vesperia, ff13, infinite undiscovery, last remnant, blue dragon, and lost odyssey
@@midgetsparkle I've been wanting to talk about Magna Carta 2 for years but my 360 is just getting too old for long run times so recording it would be such a pain lmao. Regret getting a Series S instead of an X. So glad to see other people still remember it hahaha. I've played all of those and then some. 360 definitely had more variety than PS3 when it came to the RPG genre. Especially Lost Odyssey its illegal how good that game is
I love seeing people talk about this game beyond words. It feels so obscure, now, since I never hear anything about it anymore, and it's just seems like yet another forgotten gem that got lost to time. Eternal Sonata will always have a special place in my heart regardless; I was about 6ish when I got it and didn't understand much of the super deep stuff that was going on, but I nonetheless I still adored it and was (and still am) very moved by the themes. I have alot of treasured and vivid childhood memories of playing with my sister-- one in particular was defeating the giant rat in the sewers that we had been having trouble with and the elation I felt when we did. We beat the game together and cried at the ending. I also remember us being super super SUPER frustrated afterwards when we were trying to get all of Clave's soul shards and the headaches we got from spending countless hours wandering around in the same places. Our Xbox broke a handful of years ago, so I can't play it anymore, but I've been wanting to get into emulation so I can take a trip down nostalgia lane that doesn't include just listening to the soundtrack. I just can't fully describe how much this game means to me. Thank you for making a video about it. It makes me so happy to see someone so passionate about it.
This right here is the entire reason I made this video and why I want to continue making content for the foreseeable. Like you Eternal Sonata just hit me in so many ways that ever since I first played it all the way back when it came out its stuck with me since. Being able to see people enjoy this video I made that is honestly just me talking about one of my favorite games ever and hearing everyones story and memories with this game brings so much damn joy to my heart and I love seeing it. Thank you for sharing that story here and Im glad the video did your love for the game justice. It honestly means so much to me
Hey thanks so much man!!!! This was a video I spent a ton of time on so Im glad that someone who enjoys the game as much as I do enjoyed the video. It honestly means so much
I'm late to this vid but Eternal Sonata was a very special experience at the time. I played the multi-player with my friend on PS3. It was a magical experience. On top of that, there was a dearth of quality JRPGS (or any a all) in that era. Regardless of the lack of of JRPGS, this game still stands apart not only for it's era, but across time.
Honestly, I think it's amazing that there are still people who talk about this masterpiece of a game. And this video is just ahhhhh, awesome to say the least! I really enjoyed it.
i really really loved this game for ages and its actually one of the main reasons why i chose to become a game developer. I really really fell in love with this game
I remember being a good bit overleveled in the final waltz fight and he STILL was able to give me a bit of trouble. I had an easier time with EVERY other boss (excluding ezi) but still lol. I was underleveled for the annihilator and still went through with no problem. But waltz? Nope. Can't have an easy time with home at all.
I loved this game as a child, but could never remember what it was called, and all i knew to google was "girl fighting pumpkin in forest" until today I stumbled across it! I don't remember much of it, but just watching the intro to this video, I'm seeing a lot of myself being reflected in the themes of the game portrayed - looks like it influenced me a lot more than I ever realised! I'm going to go seek a playthrough, or maybe get the game for myself, and then come back to finish this video once I'm safe from spoilers. :)
Glad this unlocked a memory in you and hopefully you do give the game a shot!!!! Its very worth it imo and if you do I hope you enjoy the journey. I had a similar experience like that once with Wild Arms 3 hahaha
I think your asking the wrong question. The question should be "Why do I have subs at all" haha. But seriously thank you man. It truly means alot. Glad that you enjoyed it
Man, I only played this game like once, and it didn't really catch my full attention. Now I need to replay it again. Still, the game is definitely well crafted.
Yes!!!!!!! Im glad that people find this video and share how much they love the game. So glad to see people like you comment and make my 4 month journey of making this video all the worth while. Glad you enjoyed
This game is one of the best games! I loved it when I played it as a kid, the meaningful wuotes of the characters still stick in my mind. I dont understand why its not popular. We can learn from the story a lot. Great work ^-^/
Combat was the most fun part of this game for me and figuring out some of the broken combos you could do especially. After I found Hawk Eye + Shadow Silhouette + Burst on Falsetto or Allegretto, most bosses went down in a single combo, I think I needed two combos and a couple more arrows for Frederic XD. Not sure if it's different in the 360 version or if I just killed him on accident but I never saw Waltz in the final fight with Legato, just two Fire Antiques. Great aesthetics, gorgeous music, just wish that the story was a bit better. It had some good moments, like when it would get down and dirty with philosophy, but the plot and characters were super eh, so much of it just went nowhere. You're mostly just there for the fun and unique combat in a gorgeous looking and sounding world, but overall I enjoyed my time with it. I'm sorry, I love me some Viola and Falsetto, but pirate mommy is best girl.
Sorry I'm a bit late checking this out! There's nobody more deserving of the 500 subs than you! I'm glad you've reached this point where you can talk about your favorite game so passionately! It was SO worth pushing through to finish it! Every moment of this video was full of LOVE for this title and its always amazing to see a review get so sunken into a game like that and just can't stop gushing about it! I'm glad you were able to get over the hump and fianlly get this video finished! I know what it's like struggling to get through a video but this one was so worth it! Here's to 1000 subs! :D
I feel like one important that really needs to be said about this game is how well it approaches real life topics and the reality of death. There's a real life complexity in these topics that this game goes over other games of a similar genre, and there are several moments in the game where the characters discuss the intentions of the different factions, the various' characters intentions, and end up learning more because of it. Polka initially sets out on her journey for two reasons: to give meaning to her limited life and to help her mom. As such, she sets out to Forte Castle to ask them to lower the production of mineral powder. However, as she discusses her intentions with Allegretto and Beat, she comes to realize her own narrow-mindedness in how people will have less access to medicine. But at the same time, the mining of mineral powder is what's destroying the forest. In another scene, as the party discusses Baroque, Forte, and Andantino, Beat innocently assumes that one of them "has to be right". But like real life, the situation is far more complex. Andantino wants to start a revolution to improve people's lives, but a revolution would also cause bloodshed. Baroque is rumored to be supporting Andantino, possibly to destabilize the country to invade and make it easy for them. Forte may be deliberately poisoning its people by only not taxing mineral powder to bolster its army, but it being overthrown doesn't necessarily mean it would be better for the common folk. As Allegretto puts it, "We ordinary people have don't have any way of knowing which of them is right." There's a complexity to the situation that I feel many other video games aren't able to deliver well. And to wrap up this long text, the game focuses on our two main characters who are destined to die in the near future: Polka and Frederic. Polka herself sets off on her journey to do something meaningful with her life, so she tries to do that by using her power for good. Despite her impending death, she seeks to be remembered through her good deeds to other people, regardless of how other people may treat her. Frederic himself is on his deathbed in the real world, but seeks to find a meaning in his journey with the other characters, proof over whether there is an importance in the interactions and memories he's made in his dream world, or whether it really is just a dream. Which all ties into this idea of immortality and eternity - being remembered for what you've done and if it was meaningful at all. Count Waltz in the PS3 version expands on this theme further - he seeks absolute power and dominion to immortalize himself in the world. He understands that his own time is limited and that he will eventually die, so he seeks a form of immortality through meaning. They are all afraid of death, and so they try to find meaning in their limited life. Yet ironically, the thing they all seek (eternity) is something that is only obtained after death. And at the end of the game, it is only when Frederick accepts his death that he can truly make the world of Eternal Sonata truly real, truly meaningful.
Keep doing what your doing Matt. Work hard on your videos and you’ll eventually hit it big. It only takes time. Don’t slack off and stay focused if you really want to be known on this UA-cam platform.
I just bought this brand new on Amazon. It's one of my favorite games as well. Can't say how many times I cried playing it and I can't wait to play it again
i was nine maybe when i played this and my little fantasy loving heart was in love! i played with my mom and was genuinely one of my favorite games ever!
Absolutely beautiful game. Helped me overcome a time in my life of great diversity. You’re presentation of this review is spectacular. Keep them coming. Do you have any videos for lost odessey, phantasy star iv, star ocean a last hope or tales of vesperia?
honestly this was such a great and super sad game. i played this game with my brother after we finished final fantasy crystal chronicles and replaying tales of symphonia. we were still kind of new to games like this and we got soo attached to the characters especially federic. being kids we definitely werent ready for the plot and reveal lmao i remember crying because i was so in denial then crying more when i looked up federic chopin. this game will always be one of my favorites and federics songs hold a special place in my heart
This is the best look at Eternal Sonata I’ve seen. It’s my favorite stand alone game ever and impacted my life a lot. I always appreciate anyone giving this game some love.
Comments like these are why Im so glad I finally finished this video. Eternal Sonata is easily one of my favorite games of all time as well so Im glad people who feel the same way towards it enjoy this video as much as I did making it.
I was hoping someone made a video essay about my favorite single player of all time (besides Mass Effect). I wish more people saw this game's excellence, especially with the best OST of all time in a game.
Right there with you on the Best OST statement. Pretty sure I mention it but yeah its one of my favorites of all time!!! Also thanks for the nice words!!!! I made this video as just a "Lemme talk about one of my favorite games" and all the messages and support from fans like you really mean a lot even 3-4 years later. Glad to see there's still Eternal Sonata fans out there
@@MinimattReviewsMy only criticism, which I don't even know if it is, is that you didn't talk about the credits more. Especially since the PS3 version is inferior because they changed the script for some unknown reason. In the 360 version, those credits did a lot for me personally. But I understand if someone else didn't have the same experience. But yea I saw someone else bashing this game for no intelligent reason. So glad this counter existed because this is the real one.
@@FoxJupi It's been a few years when I was writing the script but I think I do remember recalling that the ending credits were different but since the main things I wanted to focus on were in the main parts of the game itself I didn't really think to mention it. (Especially since I didn't really remember the specifications at the time) But I think I also remember thinking that some of the things in this game should still be left to be discovered for those who haven't played it just yet (which I know is funny considering everything else I talk about in this game but my brain really just fires off of 14 cylinders at once lmao) I do have plans (eventually) to come back to this game and talk about the stuff I haven't talked about yet since I think it's still all interesting stuff so I'll be sure to mention it when I get to it. So I appreciate the memo/reminder 👍🙏
I played the Xbox version, which I have yet to find out if it was a mistake or not. From my own experience, I absolutely adored the gameplay, but it was too short and the story was not to my liking. But my own experience should never, EVER, dampen your own. Keep on enjoying what you enjoy.
This is wonderful video essay on an amazing game. The game is weird and made some odd choices, but I adore it. It was the first RPG I played in the 360 and I was blown away by the graphics, music and full voice acting. I found myself completely immersed in the world and I didn’t want to leave. I really hope it gets a re-release; a Switch version would be the greatest thing.
If you can come across it (or have it) I honestly say give it a shot. Its not a terribly long game. Only about 20ish houra without all the side content. But even I can admit its not everyones cup of tea. So play it if you can/want. And if meither of those fit your fancy then hear me ramble for like 34 mins lol
Its funny you mention that cause I didnt actually know this was a thing in the game until like....a month after I made this video lmao. I think its neat that they added it but I just straight up never knew about it as I never really lost to the guy.
Wow, it's that short? It's been years since I played and I replaying now but I got the A button stuck on 2 separate controllers in the past playing this game
Well too be fair I may be a bit bias on the length of the game since Ive played it so many times (And once learned the speedrun) BUT I do remember my first playthtough being about 16-20 hours. At least on the 360. PS3 version might have a bit more added with the extra dungeon and such but still not a lengthy game. Just the right length imo
Having played both versions, I say 360 has the superior battle system too. I feel PS3's version is a lot harder. I don't mind when the game gets progressively harder (I expect it to), but I hate it when the difficulty spikes significantly, only for it to be easy again. This became more obvious in the Encore mode. I remember it took me 60 hours to get 100% on XBOX 360 version. With the PS3- it was 100+ (the game only went up 99 hrs). Now I know with the 2 extra dungeons it would be longer, but it shouldn't have to have been that long. I had to get lucky to defeat that stupid pirate captain the 3rd time I faced her. The first secret dungeon where you revive Claves, that was WAY harder too. So yeah, I didn't like the gameplay as much. That being said I did love the gameplay mechanics with Echos and the item system. FYI I never tried to counter, I just did defend, which was a lifesaver. I did end up using all of the playable chars. I did like the lvl up system in that even those not in your fighting party still get experience from battles. If I had to pick my Top 3 party members- it would Polka, Frederic, and Serenade. They all had great offensive moves and defensive moves. Allegretto and Falsetto were awesome for the offensive. Beat and Viola were great for building up echos. Claves, Salsa, and March were okay, but not my favs to have in battle. I do think Jazz and Crescendo were the weakest party members due to how slow they moved, especially Crescendo. At least Jazz had a long reaching weapon to make up for that lack of spead. At least they could take hits. I thought it was clever of the game that all chars names were music related, including the names of areas too. Yeah I loved the story. When I heard there was going to be a love story involved, I got sold lol. I thought the main theme was Astra of the Heart? If that's the song you keep referring too then yeah it's a doozy and I LOVE IT. Even with it's flaws, I still say to this day it's my fav game of all time.
I adored this game when it came out! Put hours into it but I borrowed it from a friend and never finished it… is it possible to play this anywhere other than Xbox 360?
There is a PS3 version that is available physically (I think if you have PS Now or whatever it was called it might be available on PS4 as well but that might be old news) BUT if you have a decent PC you can emulate it on PC using the PS3 emu or the 360 emu. But I know both have pros n cons. But outside that this isn't really available sadly but I hope that changes one day
@@Tuxzer Eyyyy I appreciate it! My goal this year is to try and focus more on those underrated gems but yeah Emulation is sadly the one of few ways that Alot of these era of games are going to be playable cause it's hard to get ports unless we are extremely lucky
This just reminds me how many people hated FFXIII even though it had the most innovative battle system of all time & looked INFINITELY better than any other game of the entire generation & a bunch of current games even...People's priorities are f'd up.
I’ve played this game twice but quit halfway thru because the english voice acting is so dire However, just realizing now I can have japanese voice acting…. I might give this one last go

There don't seem to be that many great jrpgs in the ps3 (especially when compared to PS1, 2 and 4)
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go play this again for the..
It honestly means so much to me
This game is by far my favorite of all time. This game is just fantastic. Everything this game is just so amazing. Its so deep and just amazing.
Couldn't have said it better myself. Glad you enjoyed the video!
Amazing video! Eternal Sonata is probably my favorite game of all time, and you did an amazing job showing this masterpiece!
Ah this game.
How can you even start?
This game is just heavenly, the music , the story, the characters..
Give us Eternal Sonata Remastered 🙏
I am so glad others out there love Eternal Sonata and the beauty it holds in this world we live in.
Honestly, I think it's amazing that there are still people who talk about this masterpiece of a game. And this video is just ahhhhh, awesome to say the least! I really enjoyed it.
Glad you really enjoyed it!!!!!! I dont know why this game isnt talked about as much but dang it I hope that changes some day!
Unfortunately it's not very popular which really sucks ;/
This game is very inspiring. Many gamers won’t understand how deep this story is.
This game is the reason I'm a Chopin stan to this day, even though I don't think I ever beat it and don't remember much about it.
i really really loved this game for ages and its actually one of the main reasons why i chose to become a game developer.
Definitely one of my favourites as well, it’s just so magical. I wish they would port this to modern platforms already like pc and switch.
A beautiful, tragic, wonderful game that the world didn’t deserve.
I'm playing it right now. It's not that good
@@MartianOrion probably because you have no soul. I’m sorry.
@@MartianOrion Then I Guess the game is too big brained for feeble minded cavemen like you.
This is a beautifully crafted video. Fantastic work dude. Why the fek do you only have 571 subs
This is one of the only jrpgs left that isnt backwards compatible on xbox one and series x|s. Seriously wish it was.
Holy shit someone actually talked about this game!? I thought I was the only one who was in love with this masterpiece!
Yes!!!!!!! Im glad that people find this video and share how much they love the game. So glad to see people like you comment and make my 4 month journey of making this video all the worth while. Glad you enjoyed
Props to you, I wholeheartedly agree :)
UNDERRATED GEM, lovely video
oh man the game of my childhood, thank you for this video great work
Comments like these are the exact reason why I wanted to make it. Glad you enjoyed the video it means a ton to me
This game is one of the best games!
I played this game about 8 years ago and loved it. Unfortunately I then took it back to the library and never played it again.
One of my favorite rpgs on the 360. I would put it up there with Chrono Cross...
Nice work man, might just have to pick this up if I see it around somewhere :D
If you see it I highly reccomend it!!!! Glad you enjoyed the video man!!! Thank you so much for all the support
I could get lost in this soundtrack...good vid
This games soundtrack is so heavenly. Ive heard it so many times yet havent gotten tired of it. Thanks for watching man and for the kind words
A shame classics like this and Tales Of Graces F aren't on any modern consoles or even PC.
Absolutely beautiful game. Helped me overcome a time in my life of great diversity. You’re presentation of this review is spectacular. Keep them coming. Do you have any videos for lost odessey, phantasy star iv, star ocean a last hope or tales of vesperia?
Many thanks for the kind words. Truly means alot
This needs a remake or remaster ! A gem IMO !
I love this game! I wish they would make a sequel
honestly this was such a great and super sad game. i played this game with my brother after we finished final fantasy crystal chronicles and replaying tales of symphonia. we were still kind of new to games like this and we got soo attached to the characters especially federic. being kids we definitely werent ready for the plot and reveal lmao i remember crying because i was so in denial then crying more when i looked up federic chopin. this game will always be one of my favorites and federics songs hold a special place in my heart
I see it as Chopin travelled to another dimension whilst he was sleeping
(Especially since I didn't really remember the specifications at the time)
But I think I also remember thinking that some of the things in this game should still be left to be discovered for those who haven't played it just yet (which I know is funny considering everything else I talk about in this game but my brain really just fires off of 14 cylinders at once lmao)
I do have plans (eventually) to come back to this game and talk about the stuff I haven't talked about yet since I think it's still all interesting stuff so I'll be sure to mention it when I get to it.
Ah, cool. I remember playing a bit of this and liking the concept but not getting very far
Yo, the ending of this game is almost the same as The Dark Tower's ending
It's so underrated.
Bought this game today for €8
OH SHIT A MINIMATT REVIEW? IN 2020??
I really do love this game, but i suck at it
Edit: im in the tower thats after xylophone tower
yeah it was a pretty cool game. esp if you have a friend to play another one of the characters in combat
I'm so conflicted you sound so passionate. Do I watch the video or do I play the game?
If you can come across it (or have it) I honestly say give it a shot. Its not a terribly long game. Only about 20ish houra without all the side content. But even I can admit its not everyones cup of tea.
So play it if you can/want. And if meither of those fit your fancy then hear me ramble for like 34 mins lol
jazz, falsetto and algreto = overpowered as fuck
I remember about 14 years ago. I asked my mom to buy this game for me. I forgot about it but to be honest, I hate it the turn fighting style.
also the alernative ending if you failed to defeat Frederick
Its funny you mention that cause I didnt actually know this was a thing in the game until like....a month after I made this video lmao.
I think its neat that they added it but I just straight up never knew about it as I never really lost to the guy.
Why can't this game get remastered for PC? :( absolutely beautful game, EPS if you're a Muso
Aaaaaand more reasons I'm gonna get a Playstation in the future. All the JRPGs are on there
Having played both versions, I say 360 has the superior battle system too.
Even with it's flaws, I still say to this day it's my fav game of all time.
i loved this game
shut up
I adored this game when it came out! Put hours into it but I borrowed it from a friend and never finished it… is it possible to play this anywhere other than Xbox 360?
There is a PS3 version that is available physically (I think if you have PS Now or whatever it was called it might be available on PS4 as well but that might be old news)
BUT if you have a decent PC you can emulate it on PC using the PS3 emu or the 360 emu. But I know both have pros n cons.
But outside that this isn't really available sadly but I hope that changes one day
PC emulator is a great shout! The focus on music in this game was brilliant - such an underrated JRPG. Great video man, subscribed :)
@@Tuxzer Eyyyy I appreciate it! My goal this year is to try and focus more on those underrated gems but yeah Emulation is sadly the one of few ways that Alot of these era of games are going to be playable cause it's hard to get ports unless we are extremely lucky
@@MinimattReviews I think companies these days prefer to make remakes rather than port their games…
This just reminds me how many people hated FFXIII even though it had the most innovative battle system of all time & looked INFINITELY better than any other game of the entire generation & a bunch of current games even...People's priorities are f'd up.
What version is the best version xbox 360 or ps3?
I fucking cried so hard after i beat it a long time ago
Don't worry. You weren't the only one
PS3? it was a 360 exclusive though?
No it wasn't
There was a PS3 version that was released later with more content and a harder difficulty.
HOW DO I PLAY THIS ON PC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’ve played this game twice but quit halfway thru because the english voice acting is so dire
However, just realizing now I can have japanese voice acting…. I might give this one last go
This game is fucking depressing
first tell us why the game is good then spoil it
He ruined it by talking...the game is amazing.
